Running older software in Mac OS X (10.5.1) Leopard

Will the software I currently have installed on my Power PC G4 FW800 1GHz work in Mac OS X v10.5.1 Leopard?
I am particularly concerned about Adobe Creative Suite, running Photoshop CS 8.
I would be grateful for any advice.
Thanks in advance.

1) Backup.
2) Backup.
3) Backup.
Most users have had no difficulties at all upgrading to Leopard. But just in case something does go wrong, have a bootable clone of your previous system you can revert to. It is also a good idea to make sure your main boot drive checks out okay with Disk Utility before doing any update or upgrade.

I had an older version of Mac OS, I upgraded to Snow leopard and then OSx Lion, most of my software has been upgraded except for Imovie.  Now I can't get my projects to upload or share to iDVD or iTunes.   Also to compound the situation everytime I attempt to share to iDVD or iTunes, iMovie quits unexpectedly.    What do I do?

If you want to sync it to the iPad from that Mac, you need to upgrade it to at least 10.5.8.
If you want to copy the music to another Mac, you don't. Move the iTunes folder of the item in the Finder's sidebar over as you would any other folder. If you put it somewhere other than the Music folder, launch iTunes with the Option key held down and point it to that location.

What is the best data recovery software for Mac OS X 10.5.8 Leopard?

    A backup.
After that's there's the usual list, DataRescue, FileSalvage. General reading on this topic - http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/datarecovery.html  It would help to know the actual problem since sometimes a straight answer to this kind of question isn't always the way to a solution to the real issue.

  • Running Older Software

I work for an elementary school and some of the teachers are getting new MacBook Pros with Mountain Lion on them. However, some of the programs they used to use with Snow Leopard are too old to be run on Mountain Lion. Is there a way to fix this and make Mountain Lion run older programs?

    NEVER SAY NEVER!
If there are not upgrades of these educational programs that will run on Lion/Mountain Lion, then install Snow Leopard (with Rosetta) into Parallels:

Full Snow Leopard installation instructions are here:

NOTE:  STEP ONE of the installation instructions currently must be accomplished on a Snow Leopard or Lion Mac and then the resulting modified Snow Leopard Install.cdr image file moved to the Mountain Lion Mac for completion of the remaining STEPs.

My computer was deemed capable of running a "modern" operating system, so I upgraded. Now, most of the older CAD/CAE applications I need to use on an almost-daily refuse to be installed. How do I run this software on my new, modern operating
system? Using the XP VM is not a workable solution...

We need a ton more information on the CAD/CAE apps before we can even venture a guess.  Are they 16 bit? What was your old OS, what version of win 7 is you new os, ETC, ETC, ETC, ETC....

iPad doesn't appear in devices because it needs to download updated version of IOS but I can't do that if iTunes can't see it

    Hello,
Take a look at the Apple support article http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3274, iPad: Basic troubleshooting.  In particular the section "If iPad doesn't appear in iTunes or you can't sync iPad" might be useful as it leads to a Troubleshooting Assistant.

  • Running Older Software On OS X

Alright so I'm newer to Macs, only been using them for the last year or so. I've recently bought the Diablo Battle chest, with Diablo 1,2 and the Expansion, all of which according to manual will run on Macs. But when I run the disks, OS X tells me that that 'The Classic Environment Is No Longer Supported'. I also Have a version of Adobe Premier 6.0, which it says the same thing about. Is there anyway around this or did I just waste my money?

Somebody else reported recently that D2 stopped working after the recent Quicktime update. Did you install that?
D2 is basically software written during the Tiger generation and probably when PPCs were dominant. Running it on an Intel machine with Leopard requires several jumps in technology. Some PPC programs don't run well under Rosetta which is what enable PPC programs to run on Intel architecture. Then too, the OS jumps aren't helping.
If you're very, very lucky it might just be a corrupt preferences file causing it to stop. That would be in your user area > library > preferences folder. I don't know exactly what it would be called since I don't have D2 but it would probably have the software author name in it and hopefully something obvious like "Diablo". It would end with .plist. Move it out of there and try starting the program again.

  • Options for running older software on Mavericks

When I try to upgrade, it lists a bunch of software that won't run on Mavericks - does Mavericks have some type of "classic" mode that will enable me to run these programs?

The question of this thread is not about updating. It's about options to do what we want in free enterprise.
For every troll, there are helpful members of this forum who will offer actual assistance.  As Eric mentioned, there are options.  Here is a recent post I assembled on a similar question:
Unfortunately you got caught up in the minor miracle of Rosetta.  Originally licensed by Apple when it migrated from the PowerPC CPU platform that it had used from the mid-1990's until the Intel CPU platform in 2006, Rosetta allowed Mac users to continue to use their library of PPC software transparently in emulation.
However, Apple's license to continue to use this technology expired with new releases of OS X commencing with Lion (and now Mountain Lion).  While educational efforts have been made over the last 6 years, the fact is that Rosetta was SO successful that many users were caught unaware UNTIL they upgraded to Lion or Mountain Lion.
    Workarounds:
    1. If your Mac will support it, restore OS X Snow Leopard;
    2.  If your Mac will support it, partition your hard drive or add an external hard drive and install Snow Leopard into it and use the "dual-boot" method to choose between your PowerPC software or Lion/Mt. Lion;
    3.  Upgrade your software to Intel compatible versions if they are available, or find alternative software that will open your data files, modify them and save them;
    4.  Install Snow Leopard Server (with Rosetta) into Parallels or VMWare Fusion.  Apple is now selling Snow Leopard Server for only $19.99 + sales tax & shipping; call 1.800.MYAPPLE (1.800.692.7753).    This solution will give you concurrent use of your PowerPC applications and access to Lion or Mt. Lion.

  • Running Aflac software on Mac via Bootcamp or Parallels

Does anyone know if it is technically possible and acceptable to Aflac to run their proprietary software on a Mac running either Bootcamp or Parallels? If the answer is yes, has anyone had any experience with this?

Thanks for the quick reply, and yes, you are correct in that "Windows is Windows," but I am not yet familiar with Aflac's software, but understand there is a security component to their software and its corresponding network, the former, which I understand they must install on the computer at their end and then send it to you. I guess I will probably have to speak to the IT department at Aflac directly for the answer. FYI, the make you purchase a PC through them with the proprietary software, and personally, I cannot see buying a Windows laptop when I need a new Macbook Pro that can more than adequately meet all my needs, including those associated with Aflac's software. Some IT depts. & companies are just limited in their willingness to trail blaze. I would expect that Aflac might be a trail blazer here, as they are in general.

  • Problems Running Older Software

After installing Snow Leopard, I have some programs which no longer run including Onyx. When I start the program it reads that this program cannot run under this version. Mac Janitor does not operate either. I tried to install Toast Titanium and it will not even install. Cross Over experiences difficulties and then just shuts down. I have installed Rosetta over again and still no luck. Live 365 internet radio sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. No rhyme or reason as to which programs will or will not work. Does anybody have any suggestions?

For most of those things you will just have to wait for the developers to write updates, or find alternatives. OnyX for example, simply does not work on 10.6 - the author is working a new version that will, but until he releases v.2.1, you can't run OnyX on Snow Leopard. I image several of the other programs you list are in the same situation.

  • Antivirus for Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard

    Hi,
I am new to the mac world, Can you advice me to find out the best Antivirus software for Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard
    Thank You

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
There are no viruses that run on OSX. None. Zip. Zero.
If you're running Windoze on your Mac, that's the same as running it on a PC, so it needs all the same anti-everything stuff you'd use on a PC.
There is some "malware," such as Trojans, for Macs, though. But (unlike viruses that can get onto your system without your knowledge), you must approve their installation (via your Admin password) and/or operation (via the "This application was downloaded from the internet ..." prompt).
Appropriately enough, some of these Trojans are included in pirated versions of Apple software, such as iWork!
For the gory details, see Thomas Reed's [Mac Virus Guide|http://www.reedcorner.net/thomas/guides/macvirus].

  • Can I partition an external drive and install 10.6.8 so I can run some older software?

I have older software that won't run on my 21.5 iMac. Can I partition a 3TB Lacie external drive, then install 10.6.8 on it so I can use the older software?

The computer that I purchased did come with Parallels Desktop 10 for Mac, but I thought that was only for running some Windows software. Not a clue how to use it.
I actually asked a similar question about installing the older system on the external drive when I talked to Apple yesterday. They guy said go ahead and try it! Huh?

  • Running software on Mac mini

    Hello,
I have lot of kids software loke Kidpix,Inspiration etc, which have been working fine in Windows XP. The software manual says they are compatible with Mac too. When I try running/installing them on my mac mini, it doesnt work. Do I need to do some intermediate step to accomplish this?
    Please help!!
    Tks
    Jyothi

At the site of the publisher of Kidpix, all the support documents refer to older versions of Mac OS. It appears that their software is not made to run in OS X, which means that you have to run their software in Classic mode.
What do you mean that "it doesn't work"? Exactly what steps to you take to install and run the software, and what error messages do you see, if any?
