Running ORACLE on windows

Is there any particular benefit to running and ORACLE server on Windows 2003/2008 Server as opposed to, say, 64-bit XP ?
Is one likely to be far better at supporting a web application, for instance ?
Regards in advance

There are a number of configuration parameters that place limits on some aspects of the system for different 'editions' - some of which can be overridden by changing the registry, some are compiled into the kernel, and some are simply because the supporting software has or has not been delivered.
For example, Windows XP (Home and Pro) are not designed to be servers and will refuse incoming connections to the HTTP server once a maximum concurrent limit is reached. See http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;314882 to confirm (XP Home only allows 5 connections, XP Pro only allows 10 connections at a time.)
(Ditto, Vista and Windows7 vs Server 2008 and Server 2008R2 respectively.)

  • Running Oracle on Windows 2008 R2 64-bits and WCF

I'm trying to deploy to a Windows 2008 R2 64-Bits server running AppFabric a WCF 4.0 service that connects to an Oracle 10gR2 database. On my Windows 7 64-Bits, inside Visual Studio 2010, everything goes well. I first started using Oracle ODP.NET and, on deploy, I started getting the:
System.IO.FileNotFoundException: Could not load file or assembly 'Oracle.DataAccess, Version=2.112.2.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=89b483f429c47342' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified.
    File name: 'Oracle.DataAccess, Version=2.112.2.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=89b483f429c47342'
I tried so many things, and nothing seemed to work, and since I'm kinna desperate to get this working, and went to OracleClient, despite the fact that it's marked as deprecated, just to get this working, and buy me time. I removed everything I had installed, but installed just the win64_11gR2_client.zip, with the runtime option. However, than I started getting:
System.DllNotFoundException: Unable to load DLL 'oramts.dll': The specified module could not be found. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x8007007E)
So I reinstalled the win64_11gR2_client.zip, adding the Oracle Services for Microsoft Transaction Server component. But then, whenever I made a call to my WCF service, IIS would crash with the error below:
Faulting application name: w3wp.exe, version: 7.5.7601.17514, time stamp: 0x4ce7afa2

If I tried to change the AppPool to enable 32-bits application, the WSDL doesn't even get generated, and I get the:
A process serving application pool 'MyAppPool' suffered a fatal communication error with the Windows Process Activation Service. The process id was '2856'. The data field contains the error number.
I'm lost, and I don't know what to do. How can it be this hard to do a "simple" and typical Oracle set up? What problem would I try to solve? Does anyone know of a blog post that would show how to correctly set this up? I tried looking, but coudln't find anything, and I'm sure I'm not the only one with this problem
Well, any help would be really appreciated. Tks so much

Supported on Win 2008 R2 64bit is only 10gR2( with patchset level 10.2.0.5) and 11gR2. Oracle support will refuse any assistance for earlier versions, that should you keep in mind. Although some people say client is not so critical as the database server.

  • Running oracle database xe (express edition) on windows server 2008 r2

Is it supported to run Oracle Database XE on Windows Server 2008 R2?
Database XE is only supported as 32-bit. Current builds of Windows Server 2008 only come in x64 configurations.
Here are the Database XE system requirements for windows:
The docs say that 32-bit windows is required, yet they also say that windows server 2008 is supported.
Windows Server 2008 R2 came out in 2009, and in R2 they eliminated 32-bit OS (though there is the WOW64 subsystem to run 32-bit programs within the 64-bit OS).
    See:
    - [Wikipedia page about windows server 2008 with info on R2|http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Server_2008#Windows_Server_2008_R2]
    - [Wikipedia page on "windows 32-bit on windows 64-bit"|http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WOW64]
    Thanks,
    Matt

    Hello Matt,
Is it supported to run Oracle Database XE on Windows Server 2008 R2?No.
The docs say that 32-bit windows is required, yet they also say that windows server 2008 is supported. So this means that only 32bit versions of 2008 will be supported.
Windows Server 2008 R2 came out in 2009, and in R2 they eliminated 32-bit OS (though there is the WOW64 subsystem to run 32-bit programs within the 64-bit OS).Which is probably why 2008 R2 is not supported.
    You can either take the VM approach and install a 32 bit Windows or 64 bit Linux host, or you can queue in the list of persons waiting for a 64 bit Windows release. See the following thread for details (and the queue) for the latter: {thread:id=2277728}

  • Running Oracle Apps on Safari (Windows Version)

Firstly appologies if this is the wrong forum for this.
I have just installed Apple Safari for PC and am trying to run a 11.5.8 Apps session but the Java Screen is prompting me to install Jinitiator when its already installed.
I've reinstalled Jinitiator and the Java plugin just in case but this has had no effect.
Does anyone have any ideas where I can start to fix this? Does Safari have any special plugins on the Mac for running Oracle?
    Regards
    Richard

    Richard,
Might want to check in one of the Oracle Applications forums:
    http://forums.oracle.com/forums/category.jspa?categoryID=11
I'm all but positive that Safari for Windows is not a certified browser platform for 11.5.8 (it's far too new), but there are some smart folks in that forum that might be able to offer you some pointers on things to try.

  • Running Oracle XE and Oracle enterprise on same windows machine

    Hi,
I never had to try anything similar to this on windows. I need to continue to run Oracle Enterprise edition and Oracle XE on my windows machine.
I can install both, but when I try to run the Listener for XE Edition, it starts the listener for the enterprise edition.
Also the DB Homepage doesnt work, which leads me to believe that it might be using some fo the enterprise files, not the XE files.
I cant access the XE forum, because I cant register, so sorry for posting this here. I cant seem to find a place that mentions or explains how you can run both on a Windows box.
I have run multiple oracle versions on Unix, just never on windows...

On the windows case, the order of evaluation is taken from the PATH environment variable. This same rule applies when you have several Oracle products installed on the same box, ensure you are launching a tool that makes sense with its home, i.e. launching netca to configure a tnsentry at the XE home will not work since XE doesn't have a netca tool and the tnsora file it will be modifying will be that of the oracle home it is related to. On the other hand, when lauching sqlplus it would not be too dangerous since any compatible version of sqlplus will work.
There are issues with the listener, Oracle XE requires to be registered against the listener, additionally it will create an OraDAV access (http protocol) to open the access to the Web Administration Console. If you are planning to use web/plsql application this is also important. It can work with the other listener, but depending on your particular conditions you may want to start an independent listener for XE.

  • Enterprise Manager Job for Scripting DataPump Export for Oracle Database Running On MS Windows Server 2008

    Greetings,
I would like an example of an Enterprise Manager Job that uses an OS Script for MS Windows that would effectively run a datapump export of my Oracle 11g database (11.2.0.3) running on a Windows 2008 server.  My OEM OMS is running on a Linux server with an Oracle 12c repository.  I'd like to be able to set environment variables for date and time, my export file name (that includes SID, and export date and time, job name, and other information pertinent to the datapump export.  Thus far, I have been unsuccessful with using the % delimiter around my variables.  Also, I have put the "cmd/c" as the "Interpreter" but I am not getting anywhere in a hurry :-(
    Thanks  Million!!!

    1. Try to reach server with IP )(bypath name resolution)
    2. Disabling IPv6 is not good idea
    3. What is server operating system and what is workstation operating system?
    4. Is this new or persistent problkem?
    5. If server and workstation has different SMB version, set higher to lower one (see Petri web for procedure)

  • How to run Oracle workflow in windows 7 os

    Hi,
    Am new to oracle workflow.
I have installed oracle workflow successfully in my laptop.
After installation I dont see any shortcut's in my desktop.
Can any one sugess me how to run oracle workflow.
Steps to begin from basic level.
    Thanks
    Balaji

You mean to say you installed Workflow Builder on your laptop? See that Oracle Workflow has a Client Side (WF Builder), a backend Server side and middle application side.
Assuming you successfully installed the client side then you must have a group of programs called Oracle OUIHome and there one called Application Development. There you should be able to find Workflow builder.
    Useful notes for WF Builder:

  • Problem running Oracle Portal to Go (Oracle9i 1.0.2.0.0)

I have installed Oracle9i Application Server WE 1.0.2.0.0 Standard Edition on Windows2000 Professional Edition. I am getting problems regarding running Portal to Go.
The installer said that installation was successful. Moreover I have done the configuration tasks mentioned Oracle9i installation guide under post installation steps for Oracle9i.
But Oracle Portal to Go is not running and returning error message. Are there some other tasks still to perform to configure the Oracle Portal to Go Standard Edition?
Here it is a brief Description of what I have done with the installations process
System: Pentium II 500 MHZ with 256 MB RAM and 15 GB Hard Disk so enough space available for installations.
Windows 2000 professional was freshly installed
All pre installation tasks are done like paging file size is 896MB
Important Installation steps and points are as under (Standard Edition of Oracle 9i Application Server 1.0.2.0.0):
I followed all the steps given in Oracle 9i AS installation guide
On Windows 2000 Installer never asks for reboot before actually installing the Oracle 9i application server (Chapter 4 of installation guide: preparing system for installation: step5: page 5 of 25). So I manually reboot the system
During installation when I reached Database Access Descriptor (DAD) for Oracle Portal. In TNS connect string field for Apache listener Configuration I entered the same name (abc) (chapter 4 of installation guide: installing oracle 9i Application server: step2, 3: page 10,11 of 25) as I was going to use for my Global database name later at database Identification steps (chapter 4 of installation guide: installing oracle 9i Application server: step 4: page 12 of 25)
Note: In an other installation I left the same fields (TNS connect string) blank but of no use.
(Please let me know if I have made any mistake here)
When installation of Oracle9i AS reaches 100% installer opens a command prompt and displays
    ORA: 12541 TNS: No Listener
    Enter user name:
When I enter SYSTEM as a user name it displays
    Password:
I entered manager as password and then it displays
    ORA 12560: TNSProtocol adaptor error
And once again it asks for user name and password
I once again enter system as a user and manager as password.
(Please let me know if I have made any mistake here)
After 100% completion of the installation the configuration tools screen appears
(Chapter 4 of installation guide: installing oracle 9i Application server: step 10: page 17 of 25) and the following tasks are performed
    Net8 configuration Assistant succeeds
    Oracle database configuration assistant succeeds
When The Oracle portal 3.0 configuration Assistant Starts
I hold the installation steps for oracle portal for a while and do some database configuration tasks that are necessary (may be some are not) for installation of portal.
(Please let me know if I have made any mistake here)
    For example
Increase the table space size of Users (400 MB), and Temp (100MB) table spaces.
Validated invalid PL/SQL Modules with ULTRP.SQL script
(Please let me know if I have made any mistake here)
Installed dbms_job.sql package as it was mentioned in another guide (Oracle portal-to-Go installation Guide- Release1.0.2: Page 1: last line)
(Please let me know if I have made any mistake here)
    Stopped the database and listener
And did some changes as was asked in Oracle portal-to-Go installation Guide- Release1.0.2
Edited the init<SID>.ora file and set the following fields
    aq_tm_processes = 1
job_queue_processes = 4 (2 were recommended in guide but I left the already set values)
    job_queue_interval = 30
(Please let me know if I have made any mistake here)
Also I did the following too (though these are recommended for Internet file system)
opern_cursors = 300 (in installation guide it is asked 255 but I kept the already set value)
shared_pool_size = 52438800 (50M was suggested and this is more than that)
    processes = 200
(Please let me know if I have made any mistake here)
I started the database and listener
Proceeded the installation of Oracle Portal as is described in installation guide for Oracle 9i Application guide 1.0.2.0.0
And successfully completed the installation of Oracle Portal
There were no errors reported on the installer however when I read the installation log some errors were mentioned at the end of the file
Please see the attached log file.
I also completed all the post installation tasks at the end of chapter 4 of Oracle9i Application Server installation guide 1.0.2.0.0 except the configuration of Oracle Internet file system (is it necessary for running Oracle Portal to Go)
When I run the oracle portal to go the following situation is encountered
    Working: http://localhost/pls/portal30/admin_/dadentries.htm
    Error at: http://localhost/pls/portal30/portal30.home
Error: The preference path does not exist: Oracle.Portal.Page (WWC-51000)
(And this is the main source of confusion)
    Working: http://localhost/pls/portal30/admin_/gateway.htm?schema=portal30
    Working: http://et-wks-08:5555/invoke/wm.server.admin/adminPage
Are there any other guides and post installation steps still to follow to successfully run this Portal to Go or it is sufficient?
I can also send the installation logs of both Oracle 9i application server (installActions.log and installActions2001-05-28_03-50-56-PM.log) and Oracle portal to Go (install.log).
If you ask, I can send you the installation guides that I have followed and the screen shoots of the error messages for a detail review.
Moreover can anyone please tell me if this version of Oracle 9i Application server is ok or I must try some other version?
Also advise any other if any successful configuration and installation options.
Is it possible to run this portal to go with any other installation options/arrangements/configurations etc?
Any help from anyone will be highly appreciated.

    Hi,
If you use portal 30 instead of OAS, The installation gives you the Apache ready.

  • Error Running Oracle Apps and Discoverer at the same time

    Hello,
We are having trouble running Oracle Apps and Discoverer at the same time on certain user's machines. Here are the specifics:
The user opens Oracle Apps in Internet Explorer. The user then opens Discoverer in another Internet Explorer windows and receives the following error: Runtime Error! Program: C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe abnormal program termination
As a work around, I installed Firefox on those user's machines. These users run Oracle Apps in Internet Explorer and run Discoverer in FireFox. This has solved the problem in 99% of the cases. However, there is one user who is having FireFox using Discoverer freeze when running Oracle Apps in Internet Explorer.
Can anyone provide any insight on how I can solve these conflict issues so users can run Oracle Apps and Discoverer at the same time?
Thanks in advance for your help,
    Carlos

    Hi Michael,
I agree with you completely. It is reccommended to run 10g on a separate physical server unless you have sufficient resources to run on the same server (which even most large clients do not) Even then, I would recommend a separate server.
I should have put my comment in context :-)
a.) I was only stating that it was possible
    and
b.) whether 10g is installed on the same physical server or separate should not affect the client browser crashing issue that was posted.
I do have an install with EBS11i and Discoverer 10g on the same physical server and it works fine (this is sandbox/ TEST). Most of my large customers have 10g installed on multiple physical servers due to load balancing (capacity).
I do work for Oracle. I try to help out on the forum when I can, but it is hit or miss :-(
I would be glad to discuss anything privately.
As for the issue at hand, I can reproduce the problem and here is what is occuring.
I have EBS 11i configured with Jiniator 1.3.24
I have Discoverer 10g configured with Sun Java plugin 1.4.2_06
    1. If you launch EBS 11i apps and a form with MS IE, then the browser launches the form using Jiniator JRE 1.3.xx (whatever you have configured in AutoConfig for EBS11i)
    2. Next, the user navigates to EBS 11i SSWA and launches a Discoverer workbook.
What occurs is a child IEXPLORE.exe process is spawned from the parent IEXPLORE.exe process and Discoveer Plus is launched. The parent iexplore.exe process will be attached to the Jiniator JVM. Now if Discoverer is configured with
    a.) Sun Java Plugin or
b.)a version of Jinitiator that is a different version from what EBS 11i is configured with
then you may get this conflict.
It really is an MS IE/JRE conflict with Jinitiator and Sun Java Plugi and the way the broswers attaches to the JVM (IMHO) as this behaviour could be reproduced with other non-oracle java applets.
You can workaround the situation by:
    a. configure EBS11i and Discoverer to use the same version of Jiniator 1.3.xx
    b. educate the users to open one MS IE browser to connect to EBS11i and then open a second MS IE browser to login to EBS11i SSWA or Discoverer 10g Plus directly to launch workbooks. They need to to this by clicking on the icon and not using File >> New browser. Clicking on the icon will spawn a new parent iexplore.exe process that can attach to a second/different JVM. File >> New Window will spawan a child of the parent.
    c. As you did use two browser versions. MS IE for EBS11 connection and FireFox for Disocverer 10g connection.
I would choose optoin b, so that you can use Sun Java Plugin with Discoverer.
Open to any comments. I hope that helps you workaround the problem. The ideal solution is to have EBS 11i use/cerified with the 1.4 or 1.5 JRE. In poking around, I see there is a related post to this on one of Oracle's EBS 11i Product Managers Blog.
    See:

  • Connect to Oracle Discoverer window does not appear

    Hi,
The Web based Oracle Discoverer 4i does not work properly on my system. I first connect my Microsoft IE to the URL. One the URL there is magnifier icon. Under this icon there is a lable of "Click the image above to start".
I click this icon and another window pup up. The top left corner of this window shows "Oracle Discoverer" title. Under this title bar are the menu items. The menu items are File,Edit,Sheet, tools, Graph & Help from left to right. The bottom left corner shows "Loading...". But the "Connect to Oracle Discoverer" window never pups up.
If I connect my browser to another URL I can get "Connect to Oracle Discoverer " window displayed and log into database.
What is wrong with my first server?
    Thanks for help.
    Wallace

I'm only guessing, but I've had similar problems in a few cases with the Microsoft Java Virtual Machine. Try getting Discoverer to run with a different JVM, like Oracle Jinitiator.

  • How to install and run nzclient on windows?

    Hi,
We have a requirement run an interface from oracle to netezza table to table transfer from our local machine.
For this we need to install the nzclient to run the nzload. Please help with your views /experiences in installing the nzclient on windows xp machine.
    Thanks,
    Naveen Kumartalari.

What you're asking doesn't make sense. WebLogic runs fine on Windows. When on Windows, use the Windows-based interfaces for WebLogic.
I've consistently been using Cygwin for many years, but it's important to understand that it is NOT an operating system. It's simply a port of several Unix-based applications and shells to the Windows API.
That being said, there's nothing wrong with writing Cygwin-based scripts that interact with the WebLogic server running on a Windows box. Bash is certainly a better shell for scripting than Windows CMD scripts.
If you have a more specific question, we might be able to answer it.

  • SLES 8 running Oracle 9 hangs

I have Suse Linux Enterprise Server 8 on an IBM X225 server, model 8649, with two Pentium 4 Xeon processors, 1 GB memory, running Oracle 9.2.0.4. The OS has been kept up to date with patches via YOU. The system will hang from time to time with no warning, and nothing out of the ordinary written to /var/log/messages. I cannot even login at the console. It is completely frozen, and unfortunately seems to be random. It will be fine for a couple of days, and then it may lock up for two, three, four days straight. It usually has to be physically powered down and then back up to 'resolve' the issue. We have replaced both processors, the motherboard, all of the memory, and the video card, and still no luck. IBM says that with all the new components installed, it HAS to be a software issue. Any ideas?

I have similar situation: IBM xSeries 235 Type 8671, 2xXeon 3GHz, 2GB RAM, 6xSCSI HDD, etc; system is Linux Fedora Core 2 & Oracle 9.2.0.4. It works very well, no errors, no warnings, wonderful performance, but it falls 3..5 times a week (4 days without a crash is my best achievement).
I've downloaded and installed all firmware/bios upgrades available at their site, but it looks like the "reset" button is the only remedy for this server. Local TechSupport has unbreakable defence: this server, they say, has advanced built-in diagnostic (service processor, etc), so, any hardware problem would be located immediately; thus, the problem is Linux, don't use Fedora Core 2, don't use kernel 2.6.9, buy enterprise version (RHEL, SLES) and everything will be OK.
The fact is, I'm not sure enterprise Linux will change the situation. Choosing Fedora Core 2, I was ready to error messages, segmentation faults, problems with libraries. Instead, there is Oracle running smoothly, and Linux regularly throwing black screen, or, sometimes, Machine Check Exception, CPU Context Corrupt and other awful messages.
Without Oracle (or with Oracle and 3..4 users) system may work 2 weeks or more. So, it looks like Oracle is guilty. But I'd rather relate the problem to intensive memory and network usage, when 50 users work with database.
IBM web site contains contradictory information. It looks like there were problems (sudden crashes, reboots) with IBM xSeries Servers having Xeon and 533MHz FSB (no matter what OS). They've promised to repair it with BIOS update at the 3rd quarter (this year?). But the last BIOS update (1.13) is of 22-Jun-2004. Is this the one or not? I don't know. And after a month of fight with this server I still cannot deside: is this hardware or software problem? And what to do? Move to RH9? To Windows?
And above all, is that possible, that user mode application kills operating system like Linux? I accept, it can overload, slow down, cause denial of service.
But kernel panic, MCE, or just black screen...
