Running OS 9 in Snow Leopard

I am downloding shepshaver. Has anyone else had the need to run OS 9 or earlier? I have ben using Apple's since the early 80's and have a TON of Apple II and Mac software that I lost after buying my new Mac. I could use some help.

You can turn on the FTP sharing option on the SL Mac and run Fetch on the Classic Mac to transfer files over your network. Best to compress the files on your SL Mac before transferring over Fetch to the Classic Mac. Then uncompress on the Classic Mac. I do that with my vintage LC 575 via Ethernet. It is the only thing you can do since File Sharing over AppleTalk was discontinued in 2005 with OS X Tiger.
If the Classic Mac is running 8.6 or later that supports File Sharing over TCP/IP, you can connect to it from the SL Mac by using the Connect to Server option under the Go menu and entering the Classic Mac's IP address. However, I get error -50 errors often when trying to copy files.
The only reason I installed Windows XP under Boot Camp was to play the old classic Mac games that are hybrid discs...like Riven, Myst IV, Myst V, etc. However, there are some games that are Mac only discs and now having the Quicksilver 2002 G4, it works great for classic apps. I have old FileMaker Pro database files that don't run under Intel or Mac OS X and I never bothered to upgrade FileMaker. Some of the old legacy apps run much faster than their bloated Intel counterparts too. Plus, I have a variety of old Mac CD-ROM titles that only run in the Classic OS. Claris Home Page does a great job creating a quick and dirty basic web page too.

I'm having this issue as well only with a little different twist I guess. I'm transferring the iWorks applications from my Macbook Pro 3,1 with Lion to a new MBP 10,1 running Mountain Lion. I transferred the apps over using DropCopy since the older MBP doesn't have AirPlay. Applications show up but crash upon opening. This is the first install so there are no previous plist, versions or such to delete. All three crashed upon opening every time until I just had to have Keynote and purchased again - although Apple agreed to refund that purchase since my previous version quit working. Any ideas since I don't have any previous plist/versions to delete? Thanks in adavnce for any help you can offer.

Did you apply the security update to this Mac & not the others? If you did, check Software Update again. Apple has released an updated security update. This has fixed the problems caused by the first version.

If they are the grey discs which came with the iMac, then they will be machine specific and will not work on the MBP anyway. You will need to purchase a retail copy of Snow Leopard from the Apple Store for about $29 and upgrade from that. I presume your MBP is Intel and not G4.

Can Mavericks run a screensaver from Snow Leopard?

Hi all,
This morning I was running on Snow Leopard (10.6.8), and today I downloaded and installed Mavericks (10.9.4).
The screensaver options are a bit different, and I don't like them as much as the Snow Leopard ones. I was using a screensaver that made a montage of the pictures saved in iPhoto, where it would start with an image, then zoom out, revealing that image to be one of many that each acted as pixels in a larger image, and so on.
I would like to know if it is possible to download and add this screensaver (or one of the others) from 10.6.8 and run it as my screensaver now that I have Mavericks.
If it helps, I currently have iPhoto '09, version 8.1.2 (I don't know if this changed when I upgraded to Mavericks or not).

Launch the Mac app store on the computer you want to update.
To use your Apple ID at the Mac App Store
Choose Store > Sign In from the App Store menu.
Enter your Apple ID and password, then click Sign In.
Then redownload Lion.

Not able to run installer when booting (Snow)Leopard on MacBook Pro Unibody

Hi all.
I would very much appreciate any help with this issue...
I have recently installed an app called monolingual(stay away from it - don't touch it with a stick) - I thought I'd get a couple of GBs off my HDD by deleting the surplus languages... Unfortunately this resulted in other apps behaving strangely and rendered them unusable. I thought this would subside, if I'd reboot the machine. Unfortunately what I found, when i did so, was a blank default MacOs wallpaper(the one with the universe) and nothing else - not even a login prompt... Long story short - I have tried many things in single user mode - booting in verbose mode, to see what's up(nothing out of the ordinary) - booting in safe mode(didn't change a thing), and of course trying to restore my HDD from Time Machine - God bless time machine... Unfortunately in order to do that - I need the MacOs installer(which can't be reached) - I have tried to boot from DVD, while holding the C key, the option key - then choosing the DVD as the bootable device of choice, I've tried to install it remotely from my brother's macbook via ethernet - nothing worked. Also I have attempted the PRAM NVRAM reset as well as the SMC... I have tried all these things with both OsX Leopard and Snow Leopard... Nothing at all worked. To make matters worse, I am worried about my hard disk, as the only way I can shut my machine down is by holding down the power button, until it turns off(keyboard shortcuts don't work, and there are no menus or anything available) - that can't be good for HDD. As far as booting from my superdrive goes - the DVD seems to be booting{I can hear it working and see the progress (the dots and the drivers loading) in verbose mode}, however at some point it just reboots the laptop with no warning or message, and the whole ordeal repeats. I am desperate and running our of options... could someone please, please, please help? Any clue or tip would be greatly appreciated and will most likely spare me a nervous breakdown.
Am I completely screwed, or just a little? Can this be fixed? For the record, I have no Apple Care, and my 1-year warranty had expired in November. Any suggestions?

Re-partitioning a drive without losing data is a very difficult task. The data on the TM drive are, at this point, irreplaceable.
It has been safe and a very common practice on a Mac to be able to add, remove and resize partitions for years. Apple supports it well with Disk Utility, and even for Bootcamp.
Time Machine is just a file/folder on a partition, even if it's only on one partition. The Time Machine drive itself is not special in any way other than it has been set up to work on a Mac with the proper partition scheme and format.
I was just suggesting a way to use the OP's mentioned hardware to perform some sort of test that would prove something, in order to know which step to recommend next. If Disk Utility says it can not create a new partition at the end of a drive, then there are fragments of data in the area and Disk Utility will refuse to resize the first partition to be slightly smaller. The OP can also go buy another drive for the experiment, and also use his brother's drive like *R C-R* mentioned. He can even buy a large USB thumb drive but I don't think he needs to buy anything for a 'test'.
It is also very common for users to create new separate partitions on an existing TM drive for other machines to use. In fact, this is the preferred storage method when sharing TM with different machines because a partition can be easily removed without disturbing adjacent TM backups, it provides for a way to control the size of each machine's TM backup, and because it's much faster to replace a partition instead of trying to delete a TM backup with Finder. These are accepted practices we've learned the hard way.
Going the other way, I routinely set up external 1TB drives for two partitions. The first 750GB partition is for TM, and the second is for a SuperDuper bootable clone. As requirements or user preference for TM or SuperDuper may increase due to larger boot drives or for whatever reason, the second partition can easily be deleted, and the first partition can be safely enlarged, with no data loss.
Now in the case of a drive that is over 85% full or was ever that full, there is a high probability that the second partition can not be created due to files getting copied to the end of the drive. Disk Utility will refuse to change a drive like this.

MacBook Pro running Windows XP with Snow Leopard 10.6.8

When I got a MacBook Pro in 2006 I gave a small partition to my husband so he could log into his computer at the office. I used Boot Camp and an OEM WIndows XP disk. Everything ran smoothly for 5 years... last week he started having problems with windows and after doing some diagnostics and deletions we were able to get the system up and running.
I have recently gotten a newer MacBook Pro and decided I should wipe the old one clean, give him a larger partition and reinstall everything. SO... I downloaded lion wiped the drive clean and reinstalled system software. Opened up Boot Camp clicked download Windows support software got an error. After searching support found that Lion doesn't support XP... His company still uses XP and he's not that computer Savvy so it makes sense to keep him with what he's familiar with (plus who wants to buy another windosOS)... SO I decided to reinstall the original disk of Snow Leopard, re partitioned the drive loaded XP, used the Windows installer disk I originally made with the Boot Camp beta version I downloaded 5+ years ago and everything was hunky dory... till this morning when I logged on to his system to do further installs and it says that hardware changes had been made and that WIndows needed to be "reactivated" click here... so I do and find the internet connection was missing (?) Works fine on the mac so it's a windows issue.
So I put in the windows xp disk to see if I can reinstall the OS and get an error "no boot disc"... I just decided to start over but am wondering if I made a mistake using the "mac windows installers" disk I made years ago. I go on to support and tried to download a newer version of the installers and it wants to give me an older version of Boot Camp.(am now thinking I might have had regular leopard when I first set up the initial partition/install for Windows)
I realize this is all long winded and maybe somewhat confusing. Bottom line is... I have a macbook pro that I need to install Windows XP on. Am I on the right track (planning to reinstall the XP disk but NOT repartition, etc.) Should I go back to Leopard? Should I erase the partition and start over? is there more updated Windows drivers I should be using??? SHould I bite the big one and buy Windows 7 and go forward from there?

Ok, that's what I have done... I have Snow Leopard Installed, 10.8.6 and it's got Boot Camp 3.0.4... my questionis the Mac Windows Install Drivers you add after installing Windows. Windows looks terribly awkward and I'm guessing it has something to do with the ATI graphics card sofware the mac disk installed. Is is ok to use the one I created years ago? I can't seem to find a place to create a new one using the 10.8.6 and 3.0.4.
When I orignially installed Boot Camp you had to create a disk using Boot Camp that you installed in Windows after the initial OS installation.

Sheepshaver's legality is questionable, because it requires extracting ROM from an older Mac. You are much more likely to get something that works, and is legal, if you buy a used or refurbished Mac that meets your needs*:

I am running snow leopard, and I somehow changed my version of java or JRE (not sure which - or if they are the same).
But now, I want to be sure I'm running the most current versions.

You can use /Applications/Utilities/Java Preferences.app to check installed Java versions, and which version is default/preferred.

Problems running internet videos after Snow Leopard

I am having issues running video on websites, including Apple.com, since I upgraded to Snow Leopard from Tiger 10.4. The video on Apple's website simply blanked out and refused to start. Most videos on the wall Street Journal website start the ad; glitch and freeze; the progress indicator runs; the ad finishes once the progress indicator stops; the actual video never starts. This happened on another website previously. The other thing that occurred on WSJ was ad ran after glitching; video started after ad; video froze and never completed. The cable modem is absolutely cooking, based on the activity monitor lights, while all this is happening. It really appears that during the glitching the system is loosing the website connection for some reason. Oh well, maybe I should have stayed with Tiger. Any thoughts will be well received.
The other thing I noticed from my Airport Extreme log is that my Wii is accessing the internet even when it is not being used.

I haven't upgraded yet, Do have the disk, but waiting for abit on my main system.
But to address your issue. In Safari go to the Window menu and select Activity, this will bring up a window showing whats loading and whats not.
Look for sections in red. Also in the bottom of the window is a section that states its loading 19 of 24, and when it completes it will go blank.
Status bar in the View menu shows a one liner of the same. as activity window shows all that were loaded.

Anyone can confirm that Lion runs as smooth as Snow Leopard with 2GB RAM?

I want to install Lion on my 1st gen Air, with 2GB RAM. With Snow Leo, sometimes i have to quit Safari because of the RAM is running low.
So i don't want to upgrade if Lion eats more RAM than Snow Leo.
Can anyone confirm that is it worth to install Lion on a laptop with 2GB RAM?

I have a late 2007 2.0GHz Macbook with 4GB of RAM. Snow Leopard ran beautifully on it ( I am a web developer and video editor ).
I clean installed Lion last week and it is very sluggish. It'll often hang and 'spinning beach ball' when doing the simplest tasks such as trying to scroll through a web page, switch applications, open a print dialogue box, etc.
The new UI, animations, and some of the new features of Lion are nice, but I'm considering switching back to Snow Leopard. As a power user on an "older" machine, Lion just doesn't cut it. Depending on what you use your laptop, you might have a fantastic experience with Lion. It certainly takes more video memory, so it's likely newer machines won't struggle with it at all. my concern is that the simple elements of the OS have problems running on my machine, meaning one of two things: 1) Lion is built to run well on newer machines with newer hardware or 2) Lion is built poorly. It seems more likely the former is true. in either case, if you have a "base" machine like Macbook or Mac Mini 2008 or older i'd say stick with SL. otherwise upgrade to your heart's content.

Well, some system requirements are artificial and you can get around them easily or with some effort. The requirement for Intel hardware with Snow Leopard is very real. No amount of hacking is going to get Snow Leopard to work on PowerPC hardware.
