This is asked so many times. If you have the desk space, invest $10 in an old iMac G3 or iMac G4 (for a few dollars more). Ideally for space an old PowerBook G3, or Titanium PowerBook G4 will provide a (bit more expensive) solution also.
I gave away my old PowerBooks and you should be able to find them on eBay. Make sure you get one with the original disks. You will also find that owners who still have the original boxes and original disks have usually make that extra effort to take care of their computers.

You can't do it with any built-in functionality. To run Mac OS 9 apps under the "Classic" environment, you need a PowerPC Mac running Tiger (10.4.11) or below. With Leopard (10.5), you can't even do it with a PowerPC Mac.
There is an application that is supposed to allow you do run Mac OS 9.0.4 with Intel Macs under Mac OS X.

But it is far from perfected. And you'll have to do some reading to figure out how to install it and use it.

  • Can I use PowerPC Apps on the Intel iMac?

    Hi guys!
The reason I am entering the same question on both the G5 and the Intel forum is because many of you may have moved from PowerPC to Intel and have had the same question...
Will my PowerPC Apps work in the Intel system?
I've been able to install both my Photoshop CS and Flash 8 on my new Intel Core 2 Duo iMac. They are working ok but when I open "Activity Monitor" and check the memory usage I see most of the processes are showing as Intel but the Photoshop and Flash are showing as PowerPC type.
I also note that 1GB ram is almost taken, even though I only opened the programs, didn't even open a file.
Is it ok to keep running these Apps even though they are PowerPC Apps?
    Would they harm the system?
Is there a workaround, a fix from Adobe, or will I have to buy the newest Photoshop and Flash? As Photoshop CS and Flash 8 are perfect for me... no need to buy the newest version regarding functionalities.
    Thanks for any idea!

A great response from another Mac user at the Intel forum:
    **Kenichi Watanabe**
*When you run PowerPC apps on an Intel Mac, a translator called Rosetta is used by the system. This will use more RAM and those apps will not run as fast as their equivalent Universal apps. However, unless your G5 was a Power Mac dual or quad core, an Intel iMac running a PowerPC app (using Rosetta) may be as fast or faster than the G5 running the same app natively.*
*Will my PowerPC Apps work in the Intel system?*
*So the answer is YES, most (but not all) PowerPC apps will run on Intel Macs using Rosetta. Increasing your iMac's RAM will improve performance (but that's always true).*
    *Would they harm the system?*
*NO. Rosetta is a built-in part of the system. Sort of like Classic, but better integrated and more seamless.*
*Adobe was late in making their apps Universal, but I believe they have completed the transition. The upgrades are not free, unfortunately. If your current versions run fast enough on your Intel iMac, you should keep using them.*
    Again...
    *Thanks both Kenichi and Miriam!*

Microsoft Office 2004 (Word) unable to save files
I have been running Office 2004 on my Intel iMac with Snow Leopard for some time and all of a sudden I cannot save a document. Word just stopped responding and I have to force quit. I can open Word and create a new document but I cannot save it. I reinstalled Word but that didn’t help. Then went to the Internet and found at least one other Mac user having the same problem which it suggests is caused by a recent Mac Security Update:
    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/mac/forum/macoffice2004-macword/word-2004-wil l-not-open-or-save-documents/b04eb870-9b0d-4f3b-bb47-b122301e36f6
So I check for a new Mac Security Update and sure enough there was one. I downloaded it and now Word seems to be working, as it should. I can both open and save files. The only problem remaining is that when I open Word I get the following error message “An unexpected error occurred while trying to load the Microsoft Framework library”. I contacted Apple but they were unable to help.
How can I get rid of this error message?

Look, I realize you might have to get your machine working, so this is how you revert back.
    Restore proceedure to pre-Security Update 2012-001 v 1.0 & v 1.1
#1 Backup your personal data off the machine.
Backup files off the computer (not to TimeMachine). If you don't have a external drive, get one and connect to the USB/Firewire port and simply drag and drop copy your User folder to the external drive, it will copy all your files. It's best to have two backups of your data off the machine when trying to restore.
Disconnect all drives now to prevent any mistakes from occuring.
    #2 Reinstall OS X 10.6 from disk
Get out your 10.6 install disk and make sure it's clean and polished (very soft cloth and a bit of rubbing alcohol, no scratches) If your disk is borked, you'll have to order a new one from Apple with your serial number.
Hold c boot off the 10.6 disk (wired keyboard, internal optical drive), use Disk Utility First Aid to >Repair Disk  of your internal drive  (do not format or erase!!), Quit DU and simply re-install 10.6.
Note: Simply reinstalling 10.6 version from disk (without erasing the drive) only replaces 10.6.8 with 10.6.x and bundled Apple programs, won't touch your files (backup anyway)  or most programs, unless they installed a kext file into OS X itself. (only a few on average do this)
    #3 Update to 10.6.8 without Security Update 2012-001 v1.0 or v1.1
Reboot and log in, update to 10.6.8 via Software Update, but EXCLUDE THE Security Update 2012-001 by checkinig the details and unchecking the blue check box.
#4 Reinstall any non-working third party programs
When you reboot, make sure to reinstall any programs that require kext files installed into OS X, you'll know, they won't work when you launch them or hang for some reason as they are missing the part they installed into OS X.
If for some freakish reason you get gray screen at any time when booting (possible it might occur when you reinstall older programs), hold the shift key down while booting (Safe Mode, disables kext files) and update your installed third party software so it's compatible with 10.6.8.

    That's it really.

  • Running ppc apps on the intel macbook?

i need to run a couple of PPC apps this weekend, how do you run PPC apps on the intel macbook? rosetta?

Rosetta is automatically run for PowerPC applications running Mac OS X on Intel Macs, and is relatively transparent (you won't know it is running). The only limitations though are that Rosetta is slower than PowerPC of equivalent processor, unless you max the RAM, and then it is only slightly slower, and applications dependent on PowerPC drivers won't run at all. If it is a Mac OS 9 application, you can't run that on a MacBook without a hack known as Sheepshaver. And being a hack, it is relatively unstable, and requires you obtain a Mac OS 9 compatible ROM file. The only way to legally obtain that is to already have a Mac OS 9 compatible machine, in which case, it would be better for you to run it on that machine in the first place. If you have a Mac OS 9 compatible machine, you can network it with Mac OS X using my FAQ*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/network9X.html
If you have a PowerPC driver dependent Mac OS X software, find an equivalent title or update that is Intel native from my FAQ*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/macosxnative.html

  • Is there anyway to run Mac OS9 apps on a intel chip?

I have a CD ROM which I need to get running on tiger but the machine is an intel chip, are there any ways to solve this problem.

Sheepshaver works. I have it running on my mac.
You will need a Mac OS 9.04 (or lower version) install CD to get it working.
Install and download instructions are here at the bottom of the page:

  • How do I use OS9 apps on my new iMac?

I just got an iMac running 10.6.1 And I still have a Mac Mini running 10.4.11, which allows me to access several apps running under Classic. I'd like to still access them on the glossy new monitor, with the wireless Magic Mouse. I've heard two possible solutions: get a KVM switch, or download an OS9 emulator. Anyone try either or both of these? What would work best?

Do you realize that you've posted this question in the "Using iTunes for Windows" forum? As your question seems to have nothing to do with either iTunes or Windows, you may not get many answers.
You may want to repost this query in one of the Mac Mini forums:

  • Apple Mail quits daily, runs slow on my new Intel iMac

I have used Apple Mail for years and love it. Since I switched to Intel 24" iMac it has been a different story. Mail quits unexpectedly 2 to 3 times per day. Plus it runs real slow, had to scrap all my smart folders to try to speed up. Any ideas anyone?

    Hi a brody,
I did not use Migration asst., simply copied folders across.
Junk mail filter is barely used, don't think thats problem.
I have an ADSL connection, with DSL modem.
The problem only started with the new Intel mac. I am getting used to the idea that I did wrong copying stuff across. I am gonna follow a recommendation read in a similar discussion - to set up mail from scratch and import the mailboxes, after moving the entire mail folders to my desktop.
I'll let you know how it goes.

  • In Design CS3 - runs very slow on new Intel iMac

To open an existing In Design doc, or a a new doc takes forever. Has Adobe got problems with Intel Macs? Or is there some simple fix?

    Hi Douglas,
Adobe CS3 product line are Universal Binary apps and should usually run a lot better/faster on Intel-macs as the CS2 ones.
But also said that the CS3 apps are hungry for RAM, so how much RAM do you have ?

  • What is the best solution these days for running PC software on my intel iMac?

I have some special software that only runs on Windows operating system.  Can I use a PC emulator software package or can I partition my hard drive and install Windows?

    Windows on Intel Macs
There are presently several alternatives for running Windows on Intel Macs.
         1. Install the Apple Boot Camp software.  Purchase Windows
XP w/Service Pak2, Vista, or Windows 7.  For Boot Camp
4.0 and above you can only use Windows 7 or later. Follow
instructions in the Boot Camp documentation on
installation of Boot Camp, creating Driver CD, and
installing Windows.  Boot Camp enables you to boot the
computer into OS X or Windows.
         2. Parallels Desktop for Mac and Windows XP, Vista Business,
Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7.  Parallels is software
virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently
             with OS X.
         3. VM Fusion and Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate,
or Windows 7.  VM Fusion is software virtualization that
enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
         4. CrossOver which enables running many Windows
applications without having to install Windows.  The
Windows applications can run concurrently with OS X.
         5. VirtualBox is an Open Source freeware virtual machine such
as VM Fusion and Parallels that was developed by Solaris.
It is not as fully developed for the Mac as Parallels and VM
             Fusion.
Note that VirtualBox, Parallels, and VM Fusion can also run other operating systems such as Linux, Unix, OS/2, Solaris, etc.  There are performance differences between dual-boot systems and virtualization.  The latter tend to be a little slower (not much) and do not provide the video performance of the dual-boot system. See MacTech Labs- Virtualization Benchmarks, January 2013 | MacTech for comparisons of Boot Camp, Parallels, and VM Fusion. Benchmarks of all of the above except Crossover can be found in Benchmarking Parallels, Fusion, and VirtualBox Against Boot Camp - The Mac Observer. Boot Camp is only available with Leopard or later. Except for Crossover and a couple of similar alternatives like DarWine you must have a valid installer disc for Windows.
You must also have an internal optical drive for installing Windows. Windows cannot be installed from an external optical drive.

  • Can i downgrade os fromG5 to run os9 apps?

    hey, can I run programs from an older (1995)performa6400/200 OS? to a (2005) G5 w/ OS 10.5.8?
(it's my Father's computer...He's "old school" and he's comfortable with what he learned on.  I was just trying to help him and we got him a "little newer" computer so he could be a little more up-to-speed.  )  But, his favorite program Quark Xpress (4.0) will  not work on the newer computer. (says something about it's not in Original....or something)
I didn't realize just how expensive these programs really are!   So (MY "BRIGHT IDEAS") could I maybe downgrade his OS. 10.5.8 to run these older programs?  This way he can keep the newre computer.  (faster, more memory, etc....)
thank you all for your support and help aheaf of time.

10.5 does NOT support Classic/OS9, 10.4.11 is the last OSX to support that.

  • Running OS X Server on Intel iMac

I was wondering if anyone's experimented with this yet, or if the OS X Server software isn't ready for the Intel chip yet.

Your router will take care of DHCP for you. You categorically do not need OS X Server for that.
The router guide you can get here:
    http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satellite?childpagename=US%2FLayout&packedargs=c% 3DLProductC2%26cid%3D1127782957298&pagename=Linksys%2FCommon%2FVisitorWrapper
And it has instructions on p. 44 for configuring DHCP service by the Router.
If you are feeling adventurous (and have the time & motivation & know-how), you might download ISC DHCP and see if you can compile and configure it.
    http://www.isc.org/index.pl?/sw/dhcp/
I have no idea how that will go for you.

  • Running OS 9 on Intel IMAC

I recently purchased an I Spy Game for my son and it won't run unless I restart my Intel Imac in OS9. Can I do this?

Thank you. I pulled out the old PC lap top. Guess I'm glad I didn't throw it away. Happy Easter

  • Garageband on Intel iMac

Is anyone experiencing problems with using Garageband on the new Intel iMac? I am about to order one, but I'm concerned because Garageband is my main interest. I've heard there are audio "pops" with the new iMac.
    Thanks!
    Remulak

I'm having exactly the same problem with Garageband that Zach describes in his first post. I'm using an Intel Mac with 2 GB RAM and everything else works extremely well--except Garageband which gives me the pinwheel no matter what I do, with or without any other applications running. What gives?
