Running OsX and safari will not close

How do I close Safari?  Normal close and force close will not work.  I am stumped.  HELP.

Open the Activity Monitor located in:      Applications > Utilities
Select the Safari process on the leftthen click gray force quit button (top left in that window)
If that doesn't help, hold down the power button on your Mac until the screen goes black.
Wait about ten seconds then turn it  back on.

I have a Mac Pro tower am running OSX and iTunes will not work. It has always worked flawlessly. I can see all my iTunes content- my playlists, my songs et cetera, But I cannot play anything. The progress bar is  'stuck'...any suggestions?

Thanks. I have been using iTunes since its inception and have never had a problem...I'm using the latest version. The progress bar is the bar that moves when you're playing a song..it just won't start when I double click on a song,..have tried quitting, rebooting etc but nothing works. Apple are useless-they have told me twice they've tried to call me 'momentarily', but I've been waiting by the phone, and they definitely have not tried to call...

  • After downloading last update itunes and safari will not connect but mozilla and internet explorer does running windows vista

Itunes and safari will not connect after installing the last update, but mozilla and internet explorer does.

    Close your iTunes,
    Go to command Prompt -
(Win 7/Vista) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES, right mouse click "Command Prompt", choose "Run as Administrator".
    (Win XP SP2 & above) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES/Command Prompt
In the "Command Prompt" screen, type in
    netsh winsock reset
    Hit "ENTER" key
    Restart your computer.
If you do get a prompt after restart windows to remap LSP, just click NO.
Now launch your iTunes, and see if it is working now.
If you are still having these type of problems after trying the winsock reset, refer to this article to identify which software in your system is inserting LSP:

  • HT6114 I am trying to upgrade to Mavericks from 10.6.8.  When it tells me to close all applications, Safari will not close and I cannot proceed.  What to do?

I am trying to upgrade to Mavericks from 10.6.8.  It tells me to close all open applications.  However, Safari will not close and the installation cannot proceed.  Any suggestions?

Either try to force quit Safari (press Command + Option + Escape keys and then choose force quit in the pop up window), or, you can also shut down the computer. Then boot up and open the app store application to download Mavericks - you don't need Safari for it.

  • Safari will not close multiple windows

In the last month my safari will not close multiple pages with the red button at the top of the screen. When viewing several pages in order to close out the window I have to totally close out of Safari. Please help... this is really a pain and very time intensive.

Hi Beach Lover, fellow CAian, Welcome to Apple's Users Help Users Forums.
My only guess on the Red Dot not working would be to reinstall the 10.4.5 Combo Updater or install if you used Software Update to get to 10.4.5. You might wait a bit on this for others to chime if the work around below works for you. Combo can clean up some glitches in your current system.
[OT] Use the Combo is pretty much "standard advice" by the Maestros / Gurus in the forums I visit.
A possible work around: Try command W. Does that work.
It might not. My WAG is that maybe they both invoke the same script.
    Good Luck, JP

Launch the Terminal application by entering the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Copy or drag -- do not type -- the line below into the Terminal window, then press return:
    ls -Oel Library/Safari
Copy any lines of output that appear below what you entered and paste them into a reply to this message.

Go to the Apple Menu (click on the Apple icon in the upper left corner of the screen)......select (Force Quit) and shutdown Safari from there....and then shut the MacBook down.....

  • Macmail and safari will not open

I downloaded safari 3.1 to my eMac with Osx 10.3.9.
Now I cannot open safari or open my macmail.
I was previously using Safari 1.2.3.
So I then downloaded safari 1.2.
I still cannot open macmail with the Safari 1.2.
I have done some reading and I do not know if it is a keychain problem
    or a Webkit problem.
I called Apple and they said to reinstall safari from my
original Disk. Unfortunately my disk 1 has a scratch and it will not open.
How can I get the macmail to open?

    Hello SorrentoBlu,
First of all, Welcome to the  Discussion forums!
Unfortunately, what happens with installing the later version of Safari over a supported version for 10.3.9, the download "breaks" or damages the WebKit system files.
To resolve this, the only thing that I have seen is to reinstall the system. Not sure why Apple told you to reinstall the older version of Safari from disk. As far as I know neither will work even after reinstalling as the System WebKit files will be damaged and they will not run. That is my understanding, sorry if I am wrong.
It's unfortunate that you do not have a working install disk as you most likely will have to reinstall from disk (either your computers installation disks or by purchasing a set of "full" retail 10.3 install disks from a third party reseller).
Additionally, I wouldn't worry too much about a Safari install at this point for 10.3.9 as it is very outdated. You should use a browser such as Camino 1.6.8 which is still being supported for 10.3.9.
hope that helps and post back with further comments or questions,

  • Upgraded to Yosemite It's a nightmare!!  Itunes and Safari will not open Iphoto does not exist and the list goes on!!

I've spent all day trying to fix all the problems I'm encountered after updating to Yosemite on my MacBook Pro today.  It's been a waste of a day.  Nothing I have researched has helped.  I wish I never updated.  What is ironic that most of the things that do not work or Apple i products.  I don't understand cloud but have a feeling this is the cause of most of the problems.
After update my computer prompted me to say cannot connect to Icloud Drive (What I don't understand I cloud and didn't know I had an Icloud drive).
Itunes will not open at all and it does not even try to open(I've downloaded it again to no avail).
Iphoto has a Circle slash mark through it so it's not even avaliable.
Safari will not open just like Itunes.
Icloud in preferences just keeps spinning like it's looking for Icloud drive. (Even though I don't use this I feel it is the problem)
So I have no access to my music, my photos  cannot get on the internet with Safari Browser.
I'm afraid of what else probably doesn't work but I've been so consumed with the top three I haven't got to really explore the rest of all the apps.
My main concern at the moment are my pictures and my music.
Please Help, Thank you so much!!

iPhoto is still in your Applications folder. Your iPhoto Library is still where it was.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Yosemite, Mavericks, Mountain Lion or Lion
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility and press the Continue button. After Disk Utility loads select the Macintosh HD entry from the the left side list.  Click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If Disk Utility reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit Disk Utility and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Now, download and install the OS X Yosemite 10.10.3 Combo Update.

  • Safari will not close out due to a pop-up, how do I fix it?

How can I close out safari when it will not let me?

    Helpful Links Regarding Malware Problems
If you are having an immediate problem with ads popping up see The Safe Mac » Adware Removal Guide, remove adware that displays pop-up ads and graphics on your Mac, and AdwareMedic. If you require anti-virus protection Thomas Reed recommends using ClamXAV. (Thank you to Thomas Reed for this recommendation.) You might consider adding this Safari extensions: Adblock Plus 1.8.9.
Open Safari, select Preferences from the Safari menu. Click on Extensions icon in the toolbar. Disable all Extensions. If this stops your problem, then re-enable them one by one until the problem returns. Now remove that extension as it is causing the problem.
The following comes from user stevejobsfan0123. I have made minor changes to adapt to this presentation.
Fix Some Browser Pop-ups That Take Over Safari.
Common pop-ups include a message saying the government has seized your computer and you must pay to have it released (often called "Moneypak"), or a phony message saying that your computer has been infected, and you need to call a tech support number (sometimes claiming to be Apple) to get it resolved. First, understand that these pop-ups are not caused by a virus and your computer has not been affected. This "hijack" is limited to your web browser. Also understand that these messages are scams, so do not pay any money, call the listed number, or provide any personal information. This article will outline the solution to dismiss the pop-up.
    Quit Safari
Usually, these pop-ups will not go away by either clicking "OK" or "Cancel." Furthermore, several menus in the menu bar may become disabled and show in gray, including the option to quit Safari. You will likely have to force quit Safari. To do this, press Command + option + esc, select Safari, and press Force Quit.
    Relaunch Safari
If you relaunch Safari, the page will reopen. To prevent this from happening, hold down the 'Shift' key while opening Safari. This will prevent windows from the last time Safari was running from reopening.
This will not work in all cases. The shift key must be held at the right time, and in some cases, even if done correctly, the window reappears. In these circumstances, after force quitting Safari, turn off Wi-Fi or disconnect Ethernet, depending on how you connect to the Internet. Then relaunch Safari normally. It will try to reload the malicious webpage, but without a connection, it won't be able to. Navigate away from that page by entering a different URL, i.e. www.apple.com, and trying to load it. Now you can reconnect to the Internet, and the page you entered will appear rather than the malicious one.

  • Firefox will not open a new window for a website when it is supposed to and then will not close properly. I have un-installed and re-installed and problem persists, why? How is it solved?

When I go on to some websites and click on certain things it wants to open a new window to display the information etc.
I.E. On an agency job search site I click to do a detailed job search which should open in a new window, but this will not happen now on my Firefox.
Firefox was working perfectly ok on Saturday 11th September but for some unknown reason has acted up since Sunday.
There have been no Windows updates which could effect this and the laptop is otherwise working perfectly ok.
Nothing has changed from Saturday Night to Sunday Night that I can see.
I have even tried to do a system restore to solve the problem but with no success.

I also have this problem. I cannot open links from a discussion board I frequent nor can I open links from my email. Also after opening my email, I cannot go to any other sites except my home page. I can then go no where else.
When I close Firefox and try to reopen it, it does nothing! I have to bring up the Task Manager and end the Firefox process before I can get back in.
To the best of my knowledge, this problem started with the new update to Ver. 3.6.9. I am running Windows XP Media Center 2005
