Running osX as guest OS in virtual machines

Hi! I just bought a macbook pro 13, and i would like to run osX as guest OS on some virtual machine (vmware, virtualbox, whatever)
I think it is legally allowed (i have both apple hardware, and a regular software license for osX), and it was possible on powerpc (maconlinux worked just flawlessy). I think it should be even easier on osX.
But i noticed on vmware site that osX is not one of the supported guest OS. Have anyone tried to do this? thanks in advance,

I think it is legally allowed
It isn't, except for Mac OS X Server 10.5.

Thanks - Of Course the first thing I checked and did.

  • Should I have to run a firewall or antivirus under virtual machines if the host iMac already has them running? Thanks!

I am learning my way around my new iMac (after using PC's ever since there first WERE PC's). In addtion to using the Mac OS, I am running two virtual machines (Windows XP Pro and Windows 7) during the transition and learning phase.
I am running with a firewall and antivirus on the iMac. Should I run an additional firewall and antivirus while in the virtual machines? Or is this completely unneeded? Thank you!

You really don't need the firewall or anti-virus software for OS X, and it won't protect a virtual machine. The VMs will need their own anti-virus software and protection for each VM.

  • Is it possible to run AnyConnect VPN from an XP Virtual Machine

I am trying to setup my ASA firewall to accept AnyConnect VPN connections from an XP client running in VMware ESXi 5.1.
Does anyone know if this is even possible?
If this helps any - from an internal XP Virtual Machine, I can run ASDM to manage the firewall.
    ASA IOS 9.2(2)
    ASDM 7.2(2)
    In my physical environment:
I have proven my VPN setup is functional between the ASA and physical XP laptop.
The physical laptop running XP can make a successful AnyConnect VPN connection to the ASA. This VPN session works as expected as I can access the LAN and all servers on the inside LAN of the ASA once the VPN session is established.
    Thank you
    Frank

    Hi Jody,
My vm XP and physical XP attributes are identical BUT do not match yours.
Not sure what this means? :-|
    Any ideas?
BTW, my XP clients are operating as standalone; I.E. no Windows domain.

  • SQL Developer running slow, possibly caused by Java Virtual Machine

    Dear all
I am currently working with SQL Developer 1.5.1, connecting to an Oracle database 10.2.0.2 and it is taking about 10 minutes for SQL Developer to load. I believe the problem may be due to the Java Development kit. I upgraded to the latest version last week.
The versions running according to Java settings is:
    1.6 1.6.0_15 http://java.sun.com/products/autodl/j2se C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\javaw.exe  true
    1.6 1.6.0_07 http://java.sun.com/products/autodl/j2se C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_07\bin\javaw.exe  true
1.4 1.4.2 http://java.sun.com/products/autodl/j2se C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2\bin\javaw.exe  trueHaving looked at other posts on here I have run SQL Developer with the console and the messages in that are as follows:

I would say the problem occurred within the last couple of months but has got much worse in recently weeks. SQL Developer is also slow at times, mainly when I've used another application and it is just in the background.

    Hi there
Thank you for taking the time to reply. I use GeoRaptor and for what I use it for, I have not come across any errors whilst using it.
I had no reference to the JDK in my SQL Developer configuration file. I did a search on my system and could not located a copy of JDK, or one in my programs installed control panel, so I installed it again. However I then found a copy in the sqldeveloper folder. However that wasn't referenced in my control panel.
However having added a reference to the JDK in my SQL Developer configuration file, pointing to C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_16, it seems to be taken even longer to load.
SQL Developer is using 98,608k once loaded and my system has 1.25GB of memory. Whilst loading I was using 1.38GB. For about a year I've had slightly less memory than I sometimes use. The reason for not having 2GB is due to a previous memory failure. However this did not cause a problem for SQL developer until more recently.
Would it be worth reinstalling GeoRapter?
    Kind regards
    Tim

  • Should I run Windows maintenance programs in VMWare virtual machine?

I now use a Macbook Pro for my work, never looked back, but I need to run VMWare Fusion to use a couple of programs for work that have no viable Mac equiverlant, not an issue! my question is this, on our PC's we run maintenace programes to keep them as clear of rubish as we can, should I run one of these inside VM on my Macbook or will it cause problems?

    Thanks Kappy,
I thought this might be the case but not too proud to admit when I don't know for sure.

  • Report viewer is not printing the exact font size format if the application is run through virtual machine or RDP.

    Hi good day!,
I'm still having this problem with the font size format of my report, although I already installed this hotfix at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2768741/en-us, if I run the application using RDP or virtual machine. Anyway, I'm using VS2010 with sql server
2012 express through windows 7. Actually, I tried to search for a new and updated hotfix version but having no luck,:) since i'm not good at it (google search).:)
So, I need help on how to fix this problem.
Your help will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!
    Hardz

    Hi JJorheim,
Thanks for the link that you had given. Actually, Previewing the report on an RDP or VM environment is not a problem at all because it yields smooth result based on the report design. The problem only exist if print button icon of the report viewer is pressed
which results to a magnified font size printout. I think it is a rendering problem a somewhat default behavior of a report viewer print method. So one of the remedy is to adjust the resolution of an RDP or VM to 1024x768
(4:3 ratio) as suggested by the others, which momentarily solve this problem but not necessarily the other way around.
Anyway, thanks again for the reply.

  • RCU.bat is not opening in my virtual machine.

    Hi,
I am trying to run the rcu.bat file my virtual machine but it is not responding. It opens on my local host, however, not on my Windows 2008 server guest OS. Please advise.
    I have tried the following.
    1. Rebooted the system (both local & virtual)
    2. Reinstalled JDK
    3. Made sure there is no spaces in the directory where it is Bin file is saved.
It was working initially, however, I could not move forward because I had forgotten the service name of my DB. Now when I re-running it after a while, it does not respond.
    Please advise.
    Thanks,
    Serene

Check the compatibility; try with Window XP service pack3
BTW: Your DB is Oracle? Then they are couple of ways to know the service name
Go to Windows services look for OracleService, service name would be after name after OracleService, in my case OracleServiceXE
    XE is service name.
Also you can look at tnsnames.ora

  • Trigger a BSOD on Hyper-V Virtual Machine using CrashonCtrlScroll

    Hi All,
I need to trigger a Memory Check on a VM running under Hyper-V 2012 R1. Using "http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff545499.aspx" as a guide a I have tried using the standard
Right CTRL + Scroll Lock + Scroll Lock as well as alternate keys, e.g. Left and Right ALT keys etc.
Unfortunately I can't seem to trigger the Memory Check.
Has anyone else attempted to do this?
Essentially I am troublehshooting an issues ehere the vendor needs a complete memory dump to work out what is loaded at the time the issue occurs.
    Any help would be great.
    NSutton

    Hi Nathan,
If the specified VM is Generation 2 virtual machine running on a Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V host, you'll need instead to create the CrashOnCtrlScroll registry key in the guest operating system in this location:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\hyperkbd\Parameters
Either way be sure to reboot the guest operating system of your virtual machine once you have made any of the above registry changes so they can take effect.
If your virtual machine is running Windows Server 2012 R2, you can use the new Debug-VM cmdlet of Windows PowerShell to bugcheck the virtual machine and generate a dump file. This cmdlet injects a non-maskable interrupt (NMI) into the guest operating system
virtual machine which results in a bugcheck of the operating system. For the syntax and examples of using this cmdlet, see
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn464280.aspx.
Please let me know if this helps

  • Will Windows 7 via Bootcamp decrease the battery life or speed when running OSX?

I know that when Windows 7 is running my battery life will decrease dramatically, but I am curious is I need to worry about battery life when running OSX, or even the speed of my notebook.
    Kyle

No need to worry, Bootcamp is a separate bootable partition and OS X isn't even running, the two operating systems have nothing to do with each other.
Now if you run Windows in OS X using virtual machine software, it's very much possible the extra CPU load could shorten the battery life as your running two operating systems at once and virtual machine software in addition to other software running.
However it's much safer, easier and more convenient than the hassles of Bootcamp and handling malware infections there, as OS X is always in control of the hardware.
Windows in BootCamp or Virtual Machine?

  • Crystal Reports  and Virtual Machine

    Hi,
We currently are running Crystal Reports 9 on Windows, and have a project starting to upgrade our hardware plateform.  We'd like to take this opportunity to upgrade our Crystal Reports to either XI or 2008 at the same time.  Here are my questions that I couldn't seem to find answers from Notes and Articles. Could you please help?

    Hi Anita
    Answers to your questions:
    1. Can Crystal Reports server XI or 2008 run on virtual machine?
Yes Crystal reports run on virtual machines.
    2. Can Crystal Reports server XI or 2008 run on
    Windows 2008?
Any version of Crystal reports has not been tested with Windows 2008 till date. Once it would be tested and found to be supported, it would be documented in the Supported Platforms Guide of that partcular version of Crystal Reports.
You can download the Supported platforms guide from
    [here|http://help.sap.com/]
I would suggest you to run Crystal Reports on Windows 2008 virtual machine and let us also know if you face any issues.
    Hope this helps!!!

  • Is it possible to have a dual boot system with Windows that can ALSO be booted into a virtual machine optionally?

I have been looking for a solution to this for some time now.  I want the convenience of a virtual Windows environment that can run simultaneously with OS X Lion--something I have right now using Virtualbox.  But at the same time, there are graphics and processor-intensive Windows applications (for me, games and engineering applications) that don't run well at all in a virtual machine.  So, here is what I am looking for:
A dual boot (i.e. bootcamp) system running Windows 7 and OS X Lion in which the Windows 7 machine can EITHER be booted as a virtual machine while running OS X OR booted physically so as to utitlize all system resources.  The real trick however, is that I I want the virtual machine and the physical machine to be the exact same system.  Meaning, if I boot physically into Windows and change something... rename a file, run a program and create a file, etc...  those changes will all appear in the virtual machine.
Now, what are my options?  I have read about Virtualbox and VMWare Fusion's "Raw Disk access" function but I can't tell if that's what I'm looking for or not...  I half-thought that they were talking about converting a physical OS into a virtual machine, but without the intention of booting the physical OS again...
Also, I'm open to any software, free or otherwise.  Thanks!

both VMWare Fusion & Parallels Desktop for Mac can use a bootcamp Windows installation as VM exactly like you want.

  • Can i install VS 2013 in my Virtual Machine with Windows 8.1 and work for Mobile Development,Mobile Emulator can work in my Virtual Machine ?

I have a Virtual Machine with Windows 8.1 OS and 4gb RAM, 200gb Disk.
I want to develop apps for Windows Mobile 8.1 with VS 2013 Update 4, Mobile Emulators can work in my Virtual Machine, bcz i am getting bellow error.
Windows Phone Emulator is unable to verify that the virtual machine is running:
Something happend while starting a virtual machine:'Emulator 8.1 WVGA 4 inch 512MB.APPUSER' failed to start.(Virtual machine ID xxxxxx-xxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxx)
The Virtual Machine Management Service failed to start the virtual machine 'Emulator 8.1 WVGA 4inch 512MB.appuser' because one of the Hyper-V components is not running (Virtual machine ID xxxx-xxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx).

No you cannot do that.  You need a physical machine that supports Hyper-V

  • Physical Server Clustered Migration to Virtual Machine

    Dear All,
We got an request from SQL server running on physical server migrate to virtual machine.
Please advice me the procedure and checklist for this migration request.
    Thanks.

    Hi mailatdinesh,
If you want to run SQL Server in a virtual machine (VM), here are some of the essential tips for virtualizing SQL Server.
    1. To support bare metal virtualization platforms, you need to make sure that the host uses a 64-bit x64 processor; In addition, for a resource-intensive workload like SQL Server, it's vital that the host processor supports Second Level Address Translation.
    2. SQL Server can automatically take advantage of multiple CPUs if they're present. If you're migrating from a physical SQL Server implementation to a virtualized SQL Server implementation, you can use the number of CPUs in the physical implementation as
a guide for the number of virtual CPUs that you'll configure in the SQL Server VM.
    3. In order for SQL Server to take advantage of dynamic memory, I recommend you to use the Enterprise edition of SQL Server 2008 or later or using the Datacenter edition of SQL Server 2008 R2 or SQL Server 2008.
    For more information , see:

When you migrate one instance from one server to another, as other post, you can use backup and restore, the sp_detach_db and sp_attach_db stored procedures, or
the Import and Export Data Wizard to copy objects and data between SQL Server databases, you also need to transfer logins and passwords between instances of SQL Server, move jobs, alerts and operators. For more information, you can refer to the following
    article,

There is also similar issue about moving SQL Server to VM, you can refer to the following post.
