Running out of drive space?

Hello,
for the background of my MacBook, it's a white one I bought in I think Jan of 07.
It had 60 GB (I know, it's killing me.) HD, 512MB RAM, and MacOS Tiger.
This past summer, I upgraded the RAM to 2 GB, and to MacOS Snow Leopard.
Everything was fine until recently I keep getting messages that my startup disk is full. so I checked and it's been under 500MB!!! But the weird thing is that only few days ago I cleaned most of the things out including iphone apps I no longer use and a lot of songs, and it was at about 6 GB. And all the sudden, under 500 MB?
Also I use Adobe design suit here, mostly photoshop, illustrator and indesign, and I use all three at the same time most of the time. And when the start up message started popping up, I couldn't use all three programs anymore because there were no room left, so if I close one program (especially photoshop) it would free about 200MB again. But Illustrator didn't really do much. So I am not sure, could this be a virus??? I still believe no virus can come into a mac, but this is making me worry... like a lot......! I have to finish my book design soon and I cannot even save my work on the hard drive! :,(
Can someone please help me ><! Thank youuuuuuuu!!!

I would definitely suggest a bigger hard drive. Even if you're not saving data, your computer is updating programs and saving preferences and other things that take up lots of disk space.
I was in your position with my 160GB HDD and have recently upgraded to a 320GB. If you are in the market for a new hard drive, you can find plenty for a very reasonable price here:
http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCategory.aspx?SubCategory=380&name=Laptop-Hard-Dr ives
Just a note- Adobe Creative Suite programs need LOTS of extra disk space, and running them simultaneously would definitely dwindle away your free space. On my old hard drive, I could have 7 or 8 GB of free space, but when I started Photoshop and worked for a while, this would gradually deplete to 1 or 2 GB. After a while, I used a free program called *Disk Inventory X* (linked below) and found out that Photoshop was creating a cache as it was running that was 5 or 6 GB. This would explain why they won't run correctly with little free space left.
Disk Inventory X: http://www.derlien.com/ This program is very handy! It shows you an image of every file on your computer, the size of each based on the amount of space that file takes up on your hard drive. I suggest to use it and see if there are some large files you can get rid of. Best of luck!

I have a 2008 Mac Book Pro partitioned running windows and are running out of drive space. Can I upgrade hard drive for more capacity? I purchased a faster drive initially, but has 200 GB capacity. I am running out of room and would like to upgrade for more space if possible.
    Can anyone suggest an alternative?

You don't need to partition your drive to run Fusion, only if you want to run Bootcamp.
If you have space on your Windows partition, I would suggest you backup your Windows partition, and then, delete the partition using Disk Utility.
You can now restore your virtual machine to a single volume or repartition if you prefer.
I would consider upgrading to a unibody MBP (used, refurbished will do) just to be able to access the HD. Opening the pre-unibody MBP is not something you would want to do.

  • Running out of disc space on my 160GB drive!

Yesterday I got a prompt telling me that I was running out of drive space. I checked, and yes, I was running out. I then tried to find out what was using my hard drive space. My Documents used about 20GB, Windows about 20GB and Program files about 20GB. Properties on the 160GB drive says I am using 132GB, but I can account for about 60GB, no more. What is using the remaining hard drive space, and how do I get it back?

I'm having the same exact problem with my T61p. It says I have 72.8 gb free of 142. I've loaded no more than 5 programs onto the computer, and my iTunes are kept on an external drive.
Where has all my space gone? Does it have something to do with system restore or backups? I didn't set up any such thing, does the laptop do it on its own?
I don't understand why this is happening to my laptop considering my 6-year-old desktop STILL has about 140 gb free out of 160...

  • Running out of disk space -- remove larger items temporarily?

I am running out of drive space. I don't want to move my entire library to another drive.
What I'd like to do is temporarily remove larger items, such as TV episodes, after backing them up to another drive, or burning to a DVD-R.
And re-import select episodes only when I want to watch them.
Is it possible to do this, and if so, can it be done without toasting the artwork? I expect the artwork is not stored in the media file itself, so that could pose a problem.
    Thanks!

There is a section in the "About Xcode Tools.pdf" file in your /Developer folder called "Uninstalling XCode 3.0 developer tools". You should have a look at that and choose which (how much) unstallation suits you - there are several different command-lines suggested in that document with different effects.

Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

  • I am receiving a notification that says that I am running out of storage space. I backed up time mating to an external hard drive. Can I delete some files to make room?

I am receiving notifications that I am running out of storage space. I backed up my mac book using an external and time machine. Can I delete some files to make room?
    If so,
When I want to restore from my time machine, can I pick and choose, say certain songs, photos or documents?

About TM "Backup Drive is Full"
Alert TM only deletes older files if they have been deleted from the source and when TM needs space on the backup drive for a new incremental backup. Time Machine "thins" it's backups; hourly backups over 24 hours old, except the first of the day; those "daily" backups over 30 days old, except the first of the week. The weeklies are kept as long as there's room.
So, how long a backup file remains depends on how long it was on your Mac before being deleted, assuming you do at least one backup per day. If it was there for at least 24 hours, it will be kept for at least a month. If it was there for at least a week, it will be kept as long as there's room.
Note, that on a Time Capsule the sparsebundle grows in size as needed, but doesn't shrink. Thus, from the user's view of the TC it appears that no space has been freed, although there may be space in the sparsebundle.
Once TM has found it cannot free up enough space for a new backup it reports the disk is full. You can either erase the backup drive and start your backups anew or replace the drive with a larger drive. You can also use the Time Machine application to selectively remove files, but that may be ineffective if you have to free up GBs of space.

If you have a considerable photograph and/or movie collection you may want to consider off loading those to the EHD too. Here are Apple's article showing how handle iTunes & iPhoto libraries.

  • Running out of disk space in c drive

    Hi,
i'm new to OBIEE, i installed obiee 10.1.3.4 on my computer , i'm doing practice on sample sales. every day i could see message running out of disk space, daily i'm purging cache entries and deleting sessions in UI, and also deleting temp files in oracle BI data, but still i'm facing this problem.
could anyone give me more ideas.
    Your valuable suggestions are appreciated.

    iTunes prefs - Advanced.
Set the *iTunes media folder location* to the external drive.
Make sure *Keep iTunes media folder organized* and *Copy files to iTunes media folder ...* are both checked.
Then go to iTunes menu File > Library > Organize library - Consolidate.
This will copy everything in iTunes to the new location.
After it is complete, quit iTunes then delete \Music\iTunes\iTunes media\ folder.

  • Running out of disk space - External Drive Advice

    Hi,
I've been importing all of our HDV video in "Large" fomat (Not the original or full size). We have an Apple TV so wanted to get the qaulity up for our large TV.
Anyway, we have lots of digital pics, huge iTunes library and now I'm starting to run out of disk space with all of my iMovie imports.
I would like to buy a huge external drive to help offload:
Is there any reason I should be concerned about storing my video on external drive? Any editing performance issues?
I use time machine, if I buy a huge external, can I split it in half and use part for time machine and part for imovie?
    Just curious.
    Thx,
    Brent

I agree that you can make this work. Your external drive must be formatted as Mac OS Extended (journaled). You can do this as you are creating your 2 partitions in Disk Utility, if it has a different formatting when you buy it.
If you want to move your Events from your internal drive to your new external drive, you need to do it from within iMovie so you do not break the links to your projects. To do this, open iMovie and click VIEW/EVENTS BY VOLUME. You should be able to see a small icon in your Event Library List for your external drive. You can Command-Drag your event icons in the event library list to this icon for your external, and all the links to your projects will be preserved. (hold down the command key while dragging). If you do a simple drag and drop, it will copy not move.

  • Running out of harddrive space - here's a fix.

Twice now I've run out of harddrive space on my t500 with a 160GB harddrive installed. The first time I called the IBM support people who were as useful as a chocolate teapot.
This time I turned to the Microsoft forums and finally got it figured out. I don't know if this will get to IBM's tech guys, but perhaps they may want to look into it for their build.
Vista uses an amount of the drive for Restore points and shadow copies of files. Typically this amount is limited to 15% of the drive space. On my copy of Vista, the setting was UNBOUNDED, which is why it gobbled up the entire harddrive.
In XP, this setting was controlled by a UI, in Vista, MS took a huge step forward and implemented a command-line utility to ocntrol this setting. (/sarcasm).
These are the commands to list and set the amount of storage consumed by Vista for restore points and Shadow copies.
    vssadmin List ShadowStorage
    vssadmin Resize ShadowStorage /on=C: /For=C: /MaxSize=5GB
Note that I set mine to 5GB which is substantially less than the default 15% of the harddrive. If you use this, use your own discretion.
The question of course is why I received a system with this set as follows:
    C:\Users\Mike>vssadmin List ShadowStorage
vssadmin 1.1 - Volume Shadow Copy Service administrative command-line tool
    (C) Copyright 2001-2005 Microsoft Corp.
    Shadow Copy Storage association

    Shadow Copy Storage volume: (C:)\\?\Volume{a589e9af-cf02-19dd-bec8-001c259b5b
    c3}\
Used Shadow Copy Storage space: 6.656 GB
Allocated Shadow Copy Storage space: 9.108 GB
Maximum Shadow Copy Storage space: UNBOUNDED
Not that I expect IBM will 'fess up, but what the hey.
Edit: My apologies for the random smilies, I couldn't find an option to turn of interpreting some character sequences as smilies.

Get the new HD and an enclosure to put it into, then after formatting it to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) in GUID partition use either Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper! to create a bootable clone of the internal HD. Then install the new HD into the computer. However rather than going through this excercise which is major surgery on an iMac I'd simply get external HD's to store large amounts of data. My iMac's internal HD is only 320GB however it staill has 219GB of free HD space because I store my large libraries on external HD's. Much easier and the performance doesn't suffer and I didn't run into any issues with breaking internal parts of making serious errors.

I am horribly cripplingly addicted to the TV shows on the iTMS but am running out of HD space so I'm looking for solutions. I know there is a script out there that will let me create multiple iTunes libraries in seperate locations including external drives so I may do that, but I'm looking for suggestions anyway.
    Anyone have any?

If I do that my library would from then on be split between the old and new locations, right?
Right. By changing the 'iTunes Music folder location', you're just telling iTunes where to store the next ripped CD and purchased music. The locations of the songs already in your library, is stored in the 'iTunes Library' file (info here).
Is it possible to move my entire library to that external drive?
Yes, many users (including me) have done that already. This article tells you the necessary steps to do:
iTunes: Moving your iTunes Music folder
Would there be any disadvantages to doing so?
The only disadvantage I can think of, is that the 'iTunes Music folder location' resets if you don't have the drive attached and run iTunes.
You have to set it manually to the EHD again after attaching the EHD.

With Exchange, you will not see disk space reclaimed until an offline defrag is run against the Exchange databases.

  • Running out of disk space on root partition

    Hello,
I'm running gnome 3 and every time I boot and logon with my user I'm getting a warning that my root partition is running out of disk space (~350MB free out of 7.5GB). This seems really strange to me since I've not installed very much software. I've got a 1TB hard drive and the big things are stored in my home directory.
    # df -h
    outputs:
Filesystem size used free used% mounted

/dev/disk/by-uuid/072ba75b-a418-4795-ac0b-965815573010 seems a little bit odd to me there although I don't have much experience using linux based systems.

and tab completion lists the files of my home directory. What's going on here?

What ?? That's the first I have heard of this. What programs fail? Any examples?
With sysvinit in Arch, this isn't such a big problem, but we're slowly starting to see evidence that this is becoming a worse and worse idea. In particular, if you set a non C locale for daemons, you will not be able to shut down cleanly, as mount(8) is trying to reference files in the locale cache (on /usr) and can't unmount /usr.
    Example bug report: https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/25149
If you're using systemd, /usr on a separate partition is flat out not allowed. We're getting into the realm of filthy hacks ahead in order to try and support this -- see Tom's late comments in the above bug report.
Oh, and be on the lookout for a cache cleaning util in pacman-contrib (name pending):
