Running out of HD room, need a little advice...

Hi everyone.
My 100 gig internal drive is just about full so I'm in the process of getting a pocket 120 gig fw drive and I want to backup, erase and reinstall my apps and docs on the internal (do a little house cleaning) and have everything running nice and fresh.
Can anyone offer any advice, tips, tricks or third part apps that make this task easier (if any)? My local Mac dealer said basically, all I need to do is to take my Home folder and copy it to the external drive, then wipe my hd clean, reload my apps and move that home folder back over? Is this correct? Will everything be there (mail, bookmarks etc)?? I'm curious because according to the info, there is 33 gigs of stuff in that home folder and apparently only 13 gigs of apps (which only adds up to 46 gigs, so where's the remaining 47 gigs?).
One last question, I've just received my Universal FC Studio discs and I know it's HUGE if I install all the loops provided, can the loops for Live Type and Soundtrack Pro be installed on the pocket fw drive where I can access them only when I need to?
Thanks in advance for your help.
Rene.

I would NOT recommend you do that. Whether everything you need is in your Home folder, will depend entirely on how you have your work organized.
I recommend backing up EVERYTHING, the whole disk. Otherwise, sure as heck, you'll look for something, and it won't be there.

Connect the iPod to your computer. Click on the iPod under Devices and iTunes. How large is the "other" category as shown in the colored bargraph? If larger than about 3/4 GB, restore the iPod. That large of "other" indicates corrupted files.

  • Running out of app room!

Ugh... I wish apple would make it so that you can support and group apps better... Even with the 2 new pages within the 3.0 firmware, I'm running out of space again...
I've also uninstalled alot of apps that I don't use frequently and they sit in iTunes... But why should I have to do this? It seems like apple needs to think about these apps, how to store them and allow customers to access them...
After all 32 GB of space and only 2GB used for apps seems rediculous especailly when there isn't any more room on the screen!

Thanks for the reply... I'm glad that someone else is in the same boat/realm as me when it comes to apps.
I do shuffle, but what I am saying is why should I have to? I have room for these apps, I have times where I could definatley have them without having to wait until the end of day to shuffle them back on and shuffle them back in?
My statement is because I know I have room, and because apple hasn't allowed me to fit them, why should I loose as a consumer? It would almost be just as if Microsoft or Apple on your main PC restricted you to installing 75 programs on the system (when a good 14 of them are apple standard and you can't get rid of them).
It would just be nice if apple allowed us to group them, and then within that group and then restrict us from there (if they can't allow us to fit them on pages). In the long run I as a paying consumer (of apps and devices) loose out on them.
While not all of my pages are 100% full, I do have my pages grouped based on use (1 music, 1 video, 1 social networking, 1 work, 1 games, 1 news/reading, 1 navigation, 1 misc). But alot of them are almost full based on the apps I have syncronized.... Meanwhile there are atleast a 60+ more that aren't syncronized any longer in my iTunes... So when I'm on the go away, I don't have access to them anymore.
Again I'm just trying to see here who has the problem, as well as seeing if there are any neat ways around it... And I would never jailbreak it, I have no need to... I would just like to see an apple solution around this!

  • Wedding photography running out of space. Need help with thousands of photos, and workflow

So my studio does wedding photography. Me and my partner both take photos.  We have about 30,000 photos just from the last 2 years.  We are running out of space big time. We both have 1 terabyte magnetic hard drives in our computers. I have about 80gb left and she has about 120gb left. Needless to say, since I myself take about 50gb of photos per wedding, I'm not going to last long. We use lightroom.
So far I have managed to backup everything on an external 2TB hard drive for both of us. I save both RAW and Jpegs to it. I also have everything backed up on an online server.  So here's my first issue.  What I've been doing, is for the previous year (completed weddings) I delete all the RAWs from the computers. I leave the JPEG's on the computer incase I need them quickly. I keep all the RAWS on the external hard drives and online.  But even doing this, deleting the RAWs from completed weddings off the internal hard drives, I'm still almost out of space. My computer is so slow because of this even though it's a top of the line computer with 6 gigs of triple channel ram. Lightroom runs so very slow and lags so bad.
So my first question is:  By deleting the raws off of my computer, if I need to go back a few years from now and re-save the raw files or re-edit, will lightroom remember my develop settings or will I have to completely re-edit every photo?  I have been saving a catalog file for each year, and start a new one every year.  I do not use XMP sidecar files I save everything to the lightroom database.  As long as I have the catalog file backed up, am I safe? Or am I doing this wrong? Because if open an old catalog file, it will say all the photos are not found on my computer (obviously).
My second question is:  I am going to be investing in more hard drives and want to do it right this time around. I want to invest in SSD drives for maximum performance.  Here is what my plan is.  One SSD drive for windows/programs, one SSD drive for lightroom scratch disk, and one 1TB "Velociraptor" 10,000rpm magnetic hard drive for keeping the actual images on.  Is this not right? Am I planning this out wrong?
Here is our current workflow. I am very welcome to suggestions:
    1) Shoot wedding.
    2) Import RAW files from CF card to computer. It goes in a folder for the client with the images going into different sub folders by category such as "reception" and "ceremony"
    3) Import folder into lightroom4.
    4) Edit photos. I do not use XMP sidecar, I use database.
    5) Export files in JPEG form into the same client folder.
    6) At the end of the year I save the catalog, make a new catalog for the new year. I delete the RAW files off of my hard drive after backing them up on 2TB external hard drive. I leave the jpegs and the client's folder on the computer hard drive.

My guess is that you are not actually deleting the original raws from your internal hard drives and have lots and lots of crud around that you are not aware off so you should go through your internal drives with a fine-toothed comb. Don't forget to actually empty the trash when you delete! 1TB is more than enough disk space for storing the Lightroom catalog file, previews and some jpegs. 30.000 photos is really not that much. My main catalog  has >50.000 images in it with the raw files all stored on external hard drives. The catalog itself is on my internal 256 GB SSD HD that also houses the previews (so I can use it with the raw files offline) and the operating system as well as a lot of software (photoshop, office, iWorks, Aperture, etc.). It is more than enough space as it still has more than 150 GB free. I automatically back up everything, including the external HD that stores the raw images to separate external HDs stored in different places.

  • MySQL has run out of memory ::Help needed::

    ::Help needed::
I've created a PHP web application in Dreamweaver, which uses a MySQL database, containing 14 tables.
On one page, I use a an SQL query to select data from 10 of the tables in the database.
However, when I try to preview the page in a browser, a PHP warning stating that the MySQL engine has run out of memory.
Is there a way of increasing the Memory Cache of the engine, or a way to optimize the performance?

    Is this happening locally?
If it is, try rebooting your system and see if this fixes the problem. If not then you have a problem with your code. If it works locally but not on the server, then you know it's not something in your code causing the issue, so you can confidently go to your host support and have them sort it out.
With any such situation, testing locally first is a vital debugging step.
Hope this gives you a path to follow.

  • I need a little advice on chosing RAM brand for my MBP

    Hi, from France !
The computer store just next where I live has these 2 brands of RAM, and I am not sure which I should chose, so I was wondering if someone with experience could give me a little advice on which brand I should go with
This is what they have :
    • Corsair : http://www.ldlc.com/fiche/PB00071269.html
    • G. Skill : http://www.ldlc.com/fiche/PB00080116.html
    (both 200 pins, unbuffered *(should I go for buffered, what's the difference ?)*, DDR2 667, PC2-5300)
+(this is for a MacBook Pro 2,33Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo (late 2006))+
Thanks a lot, do not hesitate to give your opinion even if someone else already answered !
(oh and extra bonus question, what benefit would I get by spending more money on ram for this kind of computer ? any suggestion on something else that would really rock ?)

Honestly, either is fine. There's no meaningful benefit by spending more.
RE buffered vs. unbuffered - essentially, unbuffered is what you want (buffered/registered RAM is for server applications).

  • Need a little advice please?

    Hi all
Been a while since I've had any problems with my system but just lately it seems to have gone a little flakey on me.
About 3 weeks ago I installed a Soundblaster 5.1Live card and was very impressed with the sound quality compared to my old Muse XL card. Everything was fine for a couple of weeks and then all of a sudden no sound would come out of the speakers! I hadn't touched anything to do with the case, either inside or outside since installing the card or any audio settings and I checked that the speakers where ok on another system.
As my wife had been very impressed with the sound quality of the 5.1 before all sound was lost and so I had already decided to put that card in her machine and had ordered an Audigy 2 for this system since I was sort of planning on hooking it up to our surround sound system. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers for the 5.1 card but this made no difference and so when the Audigy 2 arrived today I removed the 5.1 and installed the Audigy 2 instead. Everything says it's installed properly but there's still no sound at all. It's currently installed on PCI slot 4, the same as the 5.1 had been and the Muse XL before it.
I know there can be problems between VIA chipsets and creative cards but I always thought they were usually to do with distorted sounds or popping and crackling, not just a sudden loss of sound..i.e. Saturday night it was happily playing MP3's and then Sunday morning nothing!
    Would appreciate any advice
    Ta
    Chris

    Hi guys
Thanks for the advice. I've cleared the CMOS, reinstalled the Audigy2 in slot 3 and the NIC in slot 4 and then reformatted the HDD and now everything is fine. All I need to do now is find out what's the best slot to install the SB 5.1 on my wife's ABIT KD7-E Mobo...it's ok, I'm not asking...will go and ask on AMD forums

  • Old xserve running out of space.

Our roughly two and a half year old 2x2 Ghz DualCore intel xenon xserve came with 3 x 750 GB disks.
Two of them are mirrored, for system and files, and the third contains retrospect backup. It was the largest disks available when we got the server.
We are running out of space, and need to do something with the matter in the near future.
I am wondering if newer and larger disks are compatible with the server ( 1TB ore larger ), or should we go for an external "box" of some kind.
Any advices? We have limited resources at the moment.
    Kind regards
    hoa

I'd look to go external via SAS or SATA interconnect if feasible and if you've got the requisite PCI-X or PCIe slot open; per the [Xserve disk support document (HT1219)|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1219], you're not going to get a big boost replacing the internal drive modules (ADMs) from 750 GB to 1 TB.
I'd probably toss the "other" stuff onto an external (hardware RAID) disk array (disk shelf), and leave the system pieces in the box.

    Either of these should help.
    http://grandperspectiv.sourceforge.net/
    http://www.whatsizemac.com/
Or search 'disk size' in the App Store.
Be carefull with what you delete & have a backup BEFORE you start, you may also want to reboot to try to free any memory that may have been written to disk.

You should take the time to familiarize yourself with the documentation that is available.  You can "uncheck" a song in iTunes, and then do a manual update.

  • W350 help needed - runs out of room synching my Outlook Notes

I have about 50 short notes saved in Outlook Notes that I would like to have synched with my W350 phone.  Trouble is, that when I synch, I run out of room for these Notes at around #40.
My question:  My phone has a 2GB ram chip in it.  If I go to a bigger chip, will I be able to download all the notes?  Trouble is, I am not sure if the phone uses this extra memory for Notes, or if it's in some kind of built-in memory in the phone.  I don't keep music or anything other than Contacts and Calendar items on the phone.
    Thanks for your help.

Hi there, unfortunately notes are sync'ed to the internal memory of the phone. The internal memory is about 14MB so it is limited, I'm not aware of any software to allow you to sync directly with the memory card

You can put in any 2.5" form factor SATA drive that is 9.5mm or less in height. For RAM we need to know whether you have the 2.0 Ghz or 2.13 Ghz processor model 5.2 MacBook. The model 5,2 (Early 2009, 2.0GHz Model Only) can use 6gb of 200 pin 667mhz PC2-5300 RAM. The model 5,2 (Mid 2009, 2.13GHz Model Only) can use 6gb of 200 pin 800mhz PC2-6400 RAM.

Here are instructions on replacing the hard drive in a MacBook with a removable battery. http://creativemac.digitalmedianet.com/articles/viewarticle.jsp?id=45088
To transfer your current hard drive I like the free application SuperDuper. It makes a bootable copy of everything on your hard drive http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html  You'll need a cheap SATA external hard drive case. Put the new drive in the case then format and partition the new drive and clone your old drive to the new one. Check that it's set up right by booting up from the external drive. Then replace your old hard drive with the new one and put your old one in the external case.
Here's a cheap SATA external hard drive case on Amazon http://www.amazon.com/Vantec-NexStar-2-5-Inch-External-Enclosure/dp/B002JQNXZC/r ef=pd_cp_pc_0
If you don’t have the tools to open up the MacBook OWC has a set for $5

  • I am receiving a notification that says that I am running out of storage space. I backed up time mating to an external hard drive. Can I delete some files to make room?

I am receiving notifications that I am running out of storage space. I backed up my mac book using an external and time machine. Can I delete some files to make room?
    If so,
When I want to restore from my time machine, can I pick and choose, say certain songs, photos or documents?

About TM "Backup Drive is Full"
Alert TM only deletes older files if they have been deleted from the source and when TM needs space on the backup drive for a new incremental backup. Time Machine "thins" it's backups; hourly backups over 24 hours old, except the first of the day; those "daily" backups over 30 days old, except the first of the week. The weeklies are kept as long as there's room.
So, how long a backup file remains depends on how long it was on your Mac before being deleted, assuming you do at least one backup per day. If it was there for at least 24 hours, it will be kept for at least a month. If it was there for at least a week, it will be kept as long as there's room.
Note, that on a Time Capsule the sparsebundle grows in size as needed, but doesn't shrink. Thus, from the user's view of the TC it appears that no space has been freed, although there may be space in the sparsebundle.
Once TM has found it cannot free up enough space for a new backup it reports the disk is full. You can either erase the backup drive and start your backups anew or replace the drive with a larger drive. You can also use the Time Machine application to selectively remove files, but that may be ineffective if you have to free up GBs of space.

  • Why is my WiFi connection dropping as soon as I walk out of the room where my router is located? Running OSX 10.6.8

Why is my WiFi connection dropping as soon as I walk out of the room where my router is located? Running OSX 10.6.8
Had ISP provider here multiple times. They switched out the router/modem on 4 occasions. They ran new fiber optic cables to my house. They sent a PC tech here with a Mac, and he was able to get a strong wireless connection, but mine, he said, was "weak."
I called Apple support. They had me remove the battery and clear the PRAM. It didn't help.
There's no point in having a wireless connection if I cannot walk 20 feet away from the router without losing the connection.
Do I need a new Airport Extreme card?
How much would it cost to get one, and what is the process of getting it installed? (no longer under warranty)
    Deb Goonan

My ISP replaced my router FOUR times. I don't think that's the problem.
We already tried chanign the channel multiple times, channels 1, 6, 11 and even 9 and 4
    No luck

    Hi
Am running out room on 3 terabyte time capsule, options .... 2nd hardrive ?
I have my itunes running via the time capsule, use as a hardrive and the time capsule functionality, need more space, options ?
    thank you

You can easily add one of more USB HDDs to the TC to add additional capacity. What you won't be able to do is expand the existing space for Time Machine backups as each external drive would be treated individually for backups.
