Running out of HD space, iDisk space---deleting backups??

I'm relatively new to Mac, and have been happy with my MBP.
But it has become slow and a little bumpy in it performance in the last couple of weeks. When I try to backup my Home Folder to iDisk, I get an error message saying not enough room in iDisk. Likewise, when I try to back up to my HD, I get a similar error. This occurs when using the Backup application. I have an external HD to which I am backing everything up right now.
Where did all my HD space go? I suspect it is in the multiple backup files. And probably that's what is up with iDisk too. How do I know if/which backup files I can safely delete, and how do I do that?
Suggestions welcome. I have used this for about 6 months now, love it, and love having the ability to back up.....successfully!

No. Unfortunately I don't know what Backup.app is used for. I have not been a Mobile Me customer for years now that all it's services have been replicated for free around the web. Apples servers at the time were terribly slow. So it was broken for the only service I wanted it for. I have heard things have improved though.
Ultimately, you can do what you like. Any kind of backups are good to have.
My home folder is 78GB. I use a variety of backup steps for different things.
I would think that VERY important docs and pics should go on iDisk or Dropbox etc... I image my machine to external Hard Disk with SuperDuper for bootable backups and have my Home folder synced with Crashplan linked servers.
This doesn't give me any versioning except on the crashplan servers. But I have never needed that. If I were you I would just partition an external drive to what you think you will need for time machine. at least twice your Internal HD capacity. Then choose the important stuff to duplicate to iDisk for offsite storage (access). The partitioning of the HD for TM will help keep the size under control and still give you some other use for the HD. This is assuming you have a HD bigger than say 400GB.

How much space is your Other using? You may be able to reduce.
How Do I Get Rid Of The “Other” Data Stored On My iPad Or iPhone?
    http://tinyurl.com/85w6xwn
With an iOS device, the “Other” space in iTunes is used to store things like documents, settings, caches, and a few other important items. If you sync lots of documents to apps like GoodReader, DropCopy, or anything else that reads external files, your storage use can skyrocket. With iOS 5, you can see exactly which applications are taking up the most space. Just head to Settings > General > Usage, and tap the button labeled Show All Apps. The storage section will show you the app and how much storage space it is taking up. Tap on the app name to get a description of the additional storage space being used by the app’s documents and data. You can remove the storage-hogging application and all of its data directly from this screen, or manually remove the data by opening the app. Some applications, especially those designed by Apple, will allow you to remove stored data by swiping from left to right on the item to reveal a Delete button.

  • I am receiving a notification that says that I am running out of storage space. I backed up time mating to an external hard drive. Can I delete some files to make room?

I am receiving notifications that I am running out of storage space. I backed up my mac book using an external and time machine. Can I delete some files to make room?
    If so,
When I want to restore from my time machine, can I pick and choose, say certain songs, photos or documents?

About TM "Backup Drive is Full"
Alert TM only deletes older files if they have been deleted from the source and when TM needs space on the backup drive for a new incremental backup. Time Machine "thins" it's backups; hourly backups over 24 hours old, except the first of the day; those "daily" backups over 30 days old, except the first of the week. The weeklies are kept as long as there's room.
So, how long a backup file remains depends on how long it was on your Mac before being deleted, assuming you do at least one backup per day. If it was there for at least 24 hours, it will be kept for at least a month. If it was there for at least a week, it will be kept as long as there's room.
Note, that on a Time Capsule the sparsebundle grows in size as needed, but doesn't shrink. Thus, from the user's view of the TC it appears that no space has been freed, although there may be space in the sparsebundle.
Once TM has found it cannot free up enough space for a new backup it reports the disk is full. You can either erase the backup drive and start your backups anew or replace the drive with a larger drive. You can also use the Time Machine application to selectively remove files, but that may be ineffective if you have to free up GBs of space.

  • I keep getting a Warning that I'm running out of disk space. Even after I deleted all of my photos and e-mail I still show 0 available. Please help!

Correct KiltedTim the iPhone does not have a disk drive, and it does give an error message about running out of disk space. I'm here searching for how to clear it and/or what causes it. A friends 8gb iphone 3G has started giving her that message. It is not jailbroken, has no videos, 400 songs, 20 apps. The system information says there is 0 bytes free. There is 4.6 Gb of "other" data taking up the remaining free space. None of the few apps on the phone I expect would take up that much space with data. Even her emails and saved text messages shouldn't fill 4GB. New iPhone coming in the next couple of days. Easiest to just reset the old one after the upgrade and redownload the apps to make sure not to mess things up.

  • Deleting "old" Segments, running out of disk space

    Hi -
I have FMS server setup for HTTP live streaming.  It is fed from Adobe Live Encoder via webcam.  Everything is running well, except I am retaining all the Segment's .f4f / .f4x files since it began encoding, and after a few days this causes our sever to run out of disk space.  Where do I configure FMS server to only hold onto the last few segments?
I.E., i am encoding 24/7 and have in my streams/_definst_/streamname folder
    Seg1.f4x
    Seg1.f4m
    Seg2.f4x
    Seg2.f4m
    Seg2048.f4m
    Seg2048.f4x
And I want to only hang onto the 5 or so most recent segments.
    Thanks

As Ed pointed out, f4fpackager don't support sliding window DVR mode as of now. I am expecting Adobe to release next f4fpackager with that support.
    Bryan,
After your script deleted the old files, have you faced any issue in osmf player seek?
As I understand, f4x files contain afra indeces for all the fragments (starting from time 0 to now). If you forcefully deleted the f4f files for first few fragments, won't osmf player gives out an error when user try to seek to first time instance?

Connect the iPod to your computer. Click on the iPod under Devices and iTunes. How large is the "other" category as shown in the colored bargraph? If larger than about 3/4 GB, restore the iPod. That large of "other" indicates corrupted files.

    iTunes prefs - Advanced.
Set the *iTunes media folder location* to the external drive.
Make sure *Keep iTunes media folder organized* and *Copy files to iTunes media folder ...* are both checked.
Then go to iTunes menu File > Library > Organize library - Consolidate.
This will copy everything in iTunes to the new location.
After it is complete, quit iTunes then delete \Music\iTunes\iTunes media\ folder.

  • Running out of disk space (large VM boxes)

    Gentlemen:
    CUCM 6.1.4
    Unity version = 5.0(1.0)
Cisco Message Store Manager Version 1.4.0.38
    Exchange Information Store Version: 6.5.7638.1
Running out of disk space (large VM boxes)
Here is the situation: My client never set up any storage or flush procedures within Cisco Unity Tools Message Store Manager (MSM). Now they have several voice mailboxes with a half a GB of data or more in their (Deleted Items Folder)
I ran the (flush messages from deleted items folder) with success on these voice mailboxes.
The question is should I see some disk space reclaimed on the Server Hard Drives?
    Thanks, Tom

With Exchange, you will not see disk space reclaimed until an offline defrag is run against the Exchange databases.

  • Error message-the volume unkown is about to run out of disk space.

When I try to log and transfer any of my video clips from my camera it doesn't work, because in the middle of the transfer it comes up with a message saying volume unknown is about to run out of disk space, please clear some space and hit continue...This shouldn't be, because I have more than enough room on my mac. So I'm wondering what, if anything do I need to delete. And what else I have to do so I can get back to successfully transfering my clips. Thanks alot!

Are you capturing to the internal boot/system drive of your computer?
Also, how much remaining free space do you have on the drive you have set as the media or scratch disc?

My iPad keeps showing a message that I have run out of storage space.  I have purchased more iCloud space in settings, but I am still getting this message.  I also am not able to sync my iPad in iTunes when plugging in to my computer.

The storage space is the iPad storage space, not iCloud storage space. What size Ipad do you have?

  • TS3992 Phone running out of storage space, bought 15GB of iCloud storage...still not working

My phone was running out of storage space so my friend suggested I backup my files to iCloud. After doing this and paying for 15GB, I still am unable to take any new photos. This did not open up new space for me and it says there is still 7.7GB available. HELP. My friend who told me to do this said it worked for her and she has 25GB. My phone allowed me to take screenshots before and now I can't save anything. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. Any help here?

This more than likely means you are running out of Space LOCALLY on your Device and you need to Delete Data OFF your Device...
If this is the case... Getting Additional iCloud Storage will not fix your issue.

That means that the disk is almost full.  Unless you free up some space  soon, your operating system will begin to behave strangely and eventually will no longer boot into Windows.
Windows operating system uses part of the capacity of the hard disk for virtual memory. A good rule of thumb is to never come to within 15-20% of the hard disk's capacity.

  • You are running out of disk space error message

When i connect my iphone to itunes its continously tell me I am running out of disk space please delet some videos and photos and i have a ton of space available?

Did you try to reset your phone by holding the sleep and home button until the Apple logo comes back again?
Do you have an "other" section on your phone, bigger than 1GB? If yes, try to restore the phone to bring it back to normal size, it might contain corrupt data from an unsuccessful sync.

  • Iphone: You are running out of disk space

I have 7.3 Gb free disk space but sometimes the iphone shows error message
" Warning: You are running out of disk space. Please delete some photos or videos."
    any idea ?

If you have 7.3 GB of available free space on your iPhone, this indicates you have not transferred any data from your computer to your iPhone except for maybe contact information, etc.
Since you have no data to speak of available on your iPhone, the standard troubleshooting steps in order are power the iPhone off/on, Reset, Restore and if no change after any or all, call AppleCare or make an appointment at a local Apple Store if there is one nearby.

  • I have a 2008 Mac Book Pro partitioned running windows and are running out of drive space. Can I upgrade hard drive for more capacity?

I have a 2008 Mac Book Pro partitioned running windows and are running out of drive space. Can I upgrade hard drive for more capacity? I purchased a faster drive initially, but has 200 GB capacity. I am running out of room and would like to upgrade for more space if possible.
    Can anyone suggest an alternative?

You don't need to partition your drive to run Fusion, only if you want to run Bootcamp.
If you have space on your Windows partition, I would suggest you backup your Windows partition, and then, delete the partition using Disk Utility.
You can now restore your virtual machine to a single volume or repartition if you prefer.
I would consider upgrading to a unibody MBP (used, refurbished will do) just to be able to access the HD. Opening the pre-unibody MBP is not something you would want to do.
