Running out of space for my library

Hi - I have a 160gb iPod classic - about a year old - and I've loved the fact that it can hold my entire music library. However, I'm quickly running out of space and don't want to lose the ability to be able to sync my whole library.
I have heard there are hard drive upgrades available - has anyone experience of these and if so is it really a DIY job?
Or, does anyone think there will be higher capacity iPod's arriving soon?

Upgrading the hard drive actually means replacing the hard drive. I believe there are companies that do it, but it's certainly not a DIY job, even if you understand electronics. As for speculating about future Apple products, the "Apple Discussions Use Agreement" forbids such speculation, so that's the end of that particular thought. (http://discussions.apple.com/help.jspa#terms section 2.1.1)
Perhaps you need to check what bit rate you're using for the content of your iPod, because 160Gb can hold an awful lot of music. I have 12000+ songs on my 160GB iPod - and Podcasts, videos (which take up a lot of storage) and pictures, but I still have 50Gb of free space.
Some of my music is encoded at 256Kbps, but most is at 128Kbps. If you're using 256kbps, try adding one of those songs at 128Kbps as well and see if you can hear the difference. If you can't, perhaps 256Kbps is an unecessary use of space.

  • Help!  I'm running out of space for my operating system.

I keep getting a message that my operating system is running out of space. I have 1.05 GB free. I'm not a novice with Mac, but do know Windows better. I would be happy to clean up my disk, but am not sure how to do it or if I can find a way to expand my memory.....
    Any help?

    louisak,
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
A startup hard drive showing 1 GB free on an computer running a flavor of Unix (which OS X is) can indeed be effectively running out of room. Unix makes heavy use of scratch and swap files on the hard drive; the amount of needed swap space varies depending on how much real RAM you have and how manu programs you run concurently, but 256 to 512 MB swap spac eon disk is common (this Mac currently shows 256 MB for 3 swap files in /private/var/vm even through only 72 MB of that is in use). In addition, if you burn -R or -RW optical discs, you'll need at least as much free space as the size of the dissc to allow creation of the temporary image file used in the burning, about 700 MB for CD-R and 4.7 GB for DVD-R. As a ballpark rule-of-thumb, minimum free hard drive space should be at least 1 GB (no optical disc burning), 2 GB (CD-R burning), or 5 GB (DVD-R burning), so the warning message you're seeing is expected.
It's critical that you free up space on the hard drive as soon as possible. In the interim, close out any programs you're not immediately using and try yo run no more than one program at a time. If a Unix computer does run out of hard drive space, it can be blocked from normal startup and leave you looking at booting into single-user mode to manually clear enough files to start up again.
There are a number of ways to free up hard drive space, depending on your comfort level rooting around the OS X System, how valuable your files are, and your budget. There are several utilities that can help you ID unneeded large files, but I'd be hesitant to download anything onto your computer until you free up at least 2 GB to work with. Start by going through your user data and trashing files you don't really need.
If you use Firefox, check the ~/Users/ [username]/ Library/ Application Support/ Firefox/ Profiles/ [text].default/ folder for excess backup bookmarks files (bookmarks-##.html); thise can take up about 1 MB each and you don't really need more than the latest backup (when I last checked my work Mac, there were about 200 backup bookmarks files, so that's a fair chunck of drive space).
Continue with the tips at The X-Lab's Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk. The easiest way by far to free up space on the startup drive is to add an external Firewire drive and move your iTunes / iPhoto libraries and other user date to that drive, then delete the originals from the startup hard drive. See How to move the iPhoto Library Folder to a new location and Moving your iTunes Music folder. The localization tips in the X-Lab link can also free up a significant amount of space, but pay heed to the warnings about not deleting things unless you know what it is you're deleteing, especially when it comes to System-level items.
If you've ever experienced a crash, especially while tring to burn a CD-R or DVD-R, there may be normally temporary files left behind on the hard drive. You can use a utility like OnyX and use it to clear temporary files, logs and caches and (especially) core files. (In Unix, a core file is a snapshot of the system at the time of a crash and is useful for code debugging, but unless you have a debugger installed the core files just take up space.)
Another useful utility is Whatsize, which lets you check file sizes. Use this to look for files ending in .tmp and the like. If you ID files you suspect can be trashed but aren't sure, post back witht he file's name and check in the Discussions for anyone who can say "sure, that's safe to trash" or "no, leave it alone". when trashing files, you can move things to the Trash but hold off emptying the Trash for a while to check that the computer operates normally.

  • My drive c:\ is running out of space for an iPad backup.

My drive c:\ is running out of space. It stop me from running backup before sync. Is there a way to place the backup to an external drive? Thanks.

If your c drive has that little space on it you are going to be having other problems as well. Windows needs space on that drive in order to run efficiently. It shouldn't, but it does.
Get an external, or an additional internal drive. Move (not copy) your iTunes library, your photos, basically all your data to it. Leave only program and os files on the c drive. Then pick up a third drive to use for regular backups. You will be running fine in no time.
    Enjoy your ipad.

  • IPod seems to be running out of space for no reason

This seems like an odd problem. But I have a 2007 vintage iPod classic 80gb. And a little after the introduction on iTunes 10 it seems that my iPod is running out of adequate space to sync my podcasts. I haven't added any new songs to my syncing playlists, there's no video or photo syncing either so there's no extra data being added there. The only thing that changes is the number of podcasts that are syncing up. And I haven't changed or added to my subscriptions in a long time. But every morning it seems my iPod will sync fewer and fewer podcasts. I tell it to delete all watched/listened to podcasts so there's no residual there either. I did clear out one of my playlists a little to make room late last week and that helped. But this morning I tried syncing a half-dozen or so podcasts and it kept telling there wasn't enough free space. Is the hard drive getting bad? I've used it everyday since I got it so I'm wondering if it's showing it's age?

"Other" is the measure of used space on the iPod not taken up by Audio, Video & Photos. This includes the iPod's library and artwork plus any files you may have copied to your iPod in disk mode. The overhead for the library & artwork data is typically 1-2% of the size of the media, e.g. for 100Gb of Audio & Video expect to have around 1.5Gb of "Other". This information is needed for the iPod's operation and cannot be removed.
If you have significantly larger amounts of "Other", not related to files you've intentionally placed on the iPod, then these are probably disconnected copies of your media files or iPod libraries left over from failed sync operations. The only way to recover the space is to do a full restore.
If you have copies of all your media in your iTunes library this isn't a problem, but if you've been manually managing the content then you might need to try to recover the files from it first. See this post by Zevoneer on transferring files from the iPod to your computer. Some of the tools rely on the iPod having a healthy library however the manual method mentioned towards the end of the post should work regardless.

    Done. Thank you, Allan.
The sparse image article you sent a link to needs a little updating (or there's some variability in prompts (no password was required) with my OS and/or Disk Utility version), but it worked.
Phew! It would have been much more time consuming to use Time Machine to recover all my photos after repartitioning the drive.

How do i solve this problem so that I can import my pictures

I have plenty of space on my hard drive 1.5GB
You do not have "plenty of space". You are facing a major crisis with a severe risk of dataloss unless you act very fast indeed. This is your first priority.
OS X needs about 10 gigs of hard drive space for normal OS operations - things like virtual memory, temporary files and so on.
Without this space your Mac will slow down as the OS hunts for space on the disk, files will be fragmented, also slowing things down, apps will crash and the risk of data corruption - that is damage to your files, photos, music - increases exponentially.
Your first priority is to make more space on that HD. Nothing else can be done until you do. Purchase an external HD and move your Photos and Music to it. Both iPhoto and iTunes can run perfectly well with the Library on an external disk.

  • Itunes storage says i got 4172 photos, but i actually only have 1359 photos in my photo library. Im running out of space because of it.

i updated my iphone to ios8, but it needs 5 gb so i saved my photos to my windows pc and deleted everthing. When im finally updated, i synced my iphone to itunes and all my photos are saved to my phone which are 3000 photos (rounded) and so i screencaptured only 1000 photos so that it can be saved to my photo library and i un-synced my photos so that they are also deleted from my phone because i dont need them anymore. Now i am running out of space because the storage says i got 4172 photos but i only have 1359 showing in my photo library.

Open Settings->General->Date & Time.  Turn off Set Automatically & roll back the date a year.  Then open your photos app & the Recently Deleted folder.  The phantom photos should be there.  Tap Select & Delete All,
Now go back to Settings->General->Date & Time & toggle Set Automatically back on.
    Hope this helps!

  • I want to save my old emails as I've run out of space on my service providers server for my email.

I want to save my old emails as I've run out of space on my service providers server for my email.
I can't Archive as that takes space alos on the server.
What is the best way to do this and still access/read the old emails on my iMac, 10.8.4?

You can just drag the emails to "On My Mac" which will save them locally. Or you can use a third-party archive utility. If you're using Mail, you might look into MailSteward which will archive all your mail, including attachments, into a database:
    http://www.mailsteward.com
I've used it for years and have been quite satisfied with it.

  • HT204264 IOS devices running out of space

I'm testing the new Photos iCloud system described above. I signed up for the Beta. It works well but now my IOS devices have run out of space. This is because I've uploaded 100gigs worth of photos to the library by migrating my iPhoto's librbry.  The IOS devices are set to Optimize mode but have still run out of space. I realise this is a beta but surely Apple are aware of the limitations and should have published this? I own 200gigs worth of iCloud storage which I pay for so my iCloud is not even running at 50% capacity. Isn't this new iCloud photos system suppose to final,y get rid of photo storage issues? Thanks.

    RakD,
Changing (or designating) the 'iTunes Music folder' location in the Preferences does not instruct iTunes where to look for existing songs it currently knows about, but where to store any new songs it Imports, or 'Adds' and copies to its Library organization (if that attribute is selected). This is an important distinction.
If at all possible, move the songs back to where they were originally, allow iTunes to see them, then use iTunes to 'Consolidate' the songs to the new location on the other partition. See this link for instructions: http://discussions.apple.com/click.jspa?searchID=319008&messageID=1222994

  • TWO Itunes accounts Running out of space on each laptop. Moving one accont fully to NEW machine wit 3tb drive NAS. Can i move second mdeia libary to nas drive ?? Ie tow itunes libraries on NAS drive working independantly

Two I-Tunes libaries (Mine & My Wifes) Both Machines running out of space.
My FIX Moving All itunes account Libary etc to new PC with NAS 2tb drive (IOMEGA)or Seagate or LaCie or etc......
Can i copy the Bulky Library files ITUNEs from My Wifes laptop to the NAS drive ?
Is this easy to do ?
ALSO She will still have itunes on her laptop just none of the Bulky Library !
As the ITUNES program will be Pointed to her files (Library on NAS drive ) ?
If someone has done a walkthrough of something like this id really appreciate it?
LASTLY I did hear with itunes new Updates that it stops NAS Drives Streaming Media ? (SO is a NAS drive No use if apple are no allwing the streaming for itunes Server)

By default, the ITL is always on the C: drive.
SO it seems you moved yours to the exHD. Just moving it doesn't do anything, though...did you ever do a shift-start of itunes and use it as your library?
Pressing AND HOLDING the shift key until you get a prompt from ituens to choose a library ITL file.
I would do that now before you go any further, to make sure of which library files you want to use.
I would assume the one with the most recent date is the one you want.
iTunes uses the last library opened. You don't always have to do a shift-start, in other words.
However if at any point you start itunes without the exHD connected, it automatically goes back to the C: drive.
In that case, you WOULD need to do another shift-start to use the ITL on the exHD>
    It's option-start on a Mac, BTW.
You can move the whole folder over to your new MBP and do an option-start.
    Clear as mud?

  • MacBook Pro with Retina Running Out of Space

    Hi there.
I have a MacBook Pro with retina running OS X mavericks. Recently I have taken a look into "about this Mac" and found that I am running out of space (Picture Bellow). I found that most of my space is in Apps and I am trying to find where they are on my Mac HD. By going to the Macintosh HD the fallowing had this much space taken up "Applications (9.69GB), Library (4.74GB), System (5.7GB), User INFO (49 bytes), and Users (71.89GB) “. I found that Users (71.89GB)-> Pictures(58.91GB) is taking up most of the space but that accounts for Movies (46.91GB) and Photos (12.12GB) but not Apps. Where else should I look for the 90GB Apps or is it just the OS taking up this space?
    Thank you

If the Storage display seems to be inaccurate, try rebuilding the Spotlight index.
Empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. If you use iPhoto, empty its internal Trash first:
              iPhoto ▹ Empty Trash
Do the same in other applications, such as Aperture, that have an internal Trash feature.
According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation. You're in no danger of running out.
See this support article for some simple ways to free up storage space.
You can more effectively use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) or GrandPerspective (GP) to explore the volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can also delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one. Note that ODS only works with OS X 10.8 or later. If you're running an older OS version, use GP.
Deleting files inside an iPhoto or Aperture library will corrupt the library. Any changes to a photo library must be made from within the application that created it. The same goes for Mail files.
Proceed further only if the problem isn't solved by the above steps.
ODS or GP can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
If you have more than one user account, make sure you're logged in as an administrator. The administrator account is the one that was created automatically when you first set up the computer.
Install the app you downloaded in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
Triple-click anywhere in the corresponding line of text below on this page to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
    sudo /Applications/GrandPerspective.app/Contents/MacOS/GrandPerspective
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator. Ignore any other messages that appear in the Terminal window.
The application window will open, eventually showing all files in all folders, sorted by size. It may take a few minutes for the app to finish scanning.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.
When you're done with the app, quit it and also quit Terminal.

  • Is it better to store iMovies, iPhoto or iTunes on an external drive? I'm running out of space.

Is it better to store iMovies, iPhoto or iTunes on an external drive? I'm running out of space.

Movies for obvious reasons.  Photo libraries can get extra large too.  When that happens, you have to decide if all your metadata is worth losing, or if you want to keep the entire Pictures folder on a couple external hard drives on their own.  Remember, you should never have less than two copies of your data at all times (meaning just before erasing anything, you'll have at least three temporarily).  You can always switch the active library with an iPhoto rebuild.  command-option keys held down when you startup iPhoto.  That lets you pick the Library XML file in the Pictures folder in question out of the Users folder.

  • Running out of space warning

    Hi,
I'm using SharePoint Online (Plan 3) and Office 365 (Plan E3). I've only 1 site and with 1 document library so far, fairly straight forward!! I've only 1 team site which has allocated quota of 3000Mb.
Since last 3 days whenever I go to the Document Library I get an error message "Running out of space: This site is almost out of storage space." I've deleted almost all old version files from the document library but I still get this error.
    Any help is much appreciated.
    Thanks.
    Regards, Pranav Vaidya

Site storage is generally for a site collection and is shared amongst all sub sites. I'm not sure if this has changed for SP2013 but I don't recall seeing anything to that affect.

  • Running out of Space with Final Cut Pro X 10.1.1

I have a 1 TG external hard drive that I have been using for the FCPX Library.
I check the properties and it is using 657.72GB of space. I have deleted all movies, files, music with on FCPX. I clearned the trash can and restarted my system and FCP Library file is still showing 657.72GB being used. I have a blank project FCP will not let me delete because it says you have to have at least one.
Has anyone else run into this problem. I am running out of space to do my video's and this is really annoying.
    I really appreciate your help

You deleted all your movies? How did you do that? And what do you mean by movies? Do you mean the clips that you imported into FCP? When you imported, was it from a camera's memory card or from your computer? And do the clips exist anywhere else on your computer?
Sorry about all the questions, but just trying ensure that there are no misunderstandings due to terminology issues that might lead to problematic advice.
