Running out of space, where to store catalog/preview data?

Hello,
currently my hard drive setup is
(1) SSD 120GB, for OS and APPS
(1) Caviar Black 7200rpm 1TB, for storage (only photos on this drive)
catalog and preview data are stored on the SSD, but as the title mentions, it is running out of space. I need to move them to another HD.
I'm curious about two things:
1) would it decrease performance to move the catalog and preview data to the 7200rpm drive?
-if so, significant?
2) would it be worth it to purchase another SSD for catalog/preview data?

I like to keep all my 1:1 previews as well and run a pretty large catalog. As long as it is on a disk with plenty of free space it won't have a negative effect on performance (in fact it has a positive effect in not having to regenerate preview files), hence getting it off the SSD drive is a good idea.
The SSD drive really benefits the OS, cache, swapdisk rather than the catalog. Whilst having a catalog on a second Hard SSD drive may be an idea, I think spending the cash on a couple of decent fast 1 TB drives and spliting everything up, whilst leaving the OS and apps on the SSD will give the best bang for the buck. I am not convinced that significant gains are made by having a catalog on a SSD over a large, fast traditional drive. I would reccomend the Samsung F3
The other thing to consider is keeping all the disks running well. After a series of Hard Drive failures a few years ago, I invested in a copy of Diskeeper. This keeps my disks in tip top condition and system running well.

Movies for obvious reasons. Photo libraries can get extra large too. When that happens, you have to decide if all your metadata is worth losing, or if you want to keep the entire Pictures folder on a couple external hard drives on their own. Remember, you should never have less than two copies of your data at all times (meaning just before erasing anything, you'll have at least three temporarily). You can always switch the active library with an iPhoto rebuild. command-option keys held down when you startup iPhoto. That lets you pick the Library XML file in the Pictures folder in question out of the Users folder.

Wedding photography running out of space. Need help with thousands of photos, and workflow

So my studio does wedding photography. Me and my partner both take photos. We have about 30,000 photos just from the last 2 years. We are running out of space big time. We both have 1 terabyte magnetic hard drives in our computers. I have about 80gb left and she has about 120gb left. Needless to say, since I myself take about 50gb of photos per wedding, I'm not going to last long. We use lightroom.
So far I have managed to backup everything on an external 2TB hard drive for both of us. I save both RAW and Jpegs to it. I also have everything backed up on an online server. So here's my first issue. What I've been doing, is for the previous year (completed weddings) I delete all the RAWs from the computers. I leave the JPEG's on the computer incase I need them quickly. I keep all the RAWS on the external hard drives and online. But even doing this, deleting the RAWs from completed weddings off the internal hard drives, I'm still almost out of space. My computer is so slow because of this even though it's a top of the line computer with 6 gigs of triple channel ram. Lightroom runs so very slow and lags so bad.
So my first question is: By deleting the raws off of my computer, if I need to go back a few years from now and re-save the raw files or re-edit, will lightroom remember my develop settings or will I have to completely re-edit every photo? I have been saving a catalog file for each year, and start a new one every year. I do not use XMP sidecar files I save everything to the lightroom database. As long as I have the catalog file backed up, am I safe? Or am I doing this wrong? Because if open an old catalog file, it will say all the photos are not found on my computer (obviously).
My second question is: I am going to be investing in more hard drives and want to do it right this time around. I want to invest in SSD drives for maximum performance. Here is what my plan is. One SSD drive for windows/programs, one SSD drive for lightroom scratch disk, and one 1TB "Velociraptor" 10,000rpm magnetic hard drive for keeping the actual images on. Is this not right? Am I planning this out wrong?
Here is our current workflow. I am very welcome to suggestions:
1) Shoot wedding.
2) Import RAW files from CF card to computer. It goes in a folder for the client with the images going into different sub folders by category such as "reception" and "ceremony"
3) Import folder into lightroom4.
4) Edit photos. I do not use XMP sidecar, I use database.
5) Export files in JPEG form into the same client folder.
6) At the end of the year I save the catalog, make a new catalog for the new year. I delete the RAW files off of my hard drive after backing them up on 2TB external hard drive. I leave the jpegs and the client's folder on the computer hard drive.

My guess is that you are not actually deleting the original raws from your internal hard drives and have lots and lots of crud around that you are not aware off so you should go through your internal drives with a fine-toothed comb. Don't forget to actually empty the trash when you delete! 1TB is more than enough disk space for storing the Lightroom catalog file, previews and some jpegs. 30.000 photos is really not that much. My main catalog has >50.000 images in it with the raw files all stored on external hard drives. The catalog itself is on my internal 256 GB SSD HD that also houses the previews (so I can use it with the raw files offline) and the operating system as well as a lot of software (photoshop, office, iWorks, Aperture, etc.). It is more than enough space as it still has more than 150 GB free. I automatically back up everything, including the external HD that stores the raw images to separate external HDs stored in different places.

I'm testing the new Photos iCloud system described above. I signed up for the Beta. It works well but now my IOS devices have run out of space. This is because I've uploaded 100gigs worth of photos to the library by migrating my iPhoto's librbry. The IOS devices are set to Optimize mode but have still run out of space. I realise this is a beta but surely Apple are aware of the limitations and should have published this? I own 200gigs worth of iCloud storage which I pay for so my iCloud is not even running at 50% capacity. Isn't this new iCloud photos system suppose to final,y get rid of photo storage issues? Changing (or designating) the 'iTunes Music folder' location in the Preferences does not instruct iTunes where to look for existing songs it currently knows about, but where to store any new songs it Imports, or 'Adds' and copies to its Library organization (if that attribute is selected). This is an important distinction.
If at all possible, move the songs back to where they were originally, allow iTunes to see them, then use iTunes to 'Consolidate' the songs to the new location on the other partition. See this link for instructions: http://discussions.apple.com/click.jspa?searchID=319008&messageID=1222994

Watching youtube cause storage running out of space on android, can you do sth. about it?

I believe because of sandbox on android, the internal storage of the phone is running out of space. I tried to put firefox on sdcard, but it does not solve the issue of flash video caching. It is still collected on the main storage, which typically is very limited. Eventually I have to clear private data after viewing few longer videos, can you solve this? e.g. by putting cache of flash videos to sdcard?

Please make sure Flash plug-in in Firefox is doing the playback (so the issue is for Mozilla and Adobe) and not the Youtube app, I mean, there is always the option to load the video in Flash player or Youtube default app.
AFAIK, YouTube Android app does not store cache in internal memory if a SD card is available, because I have a Android phone with few internal memory but it works. So try to play the video from YouTube app. Despite I hardly ever play videos from Firefox Android and don't have the phone to try now, I think you can choose between playing the video from Firefox or from Youtube app. To do so, please, restore all defaults (Go to System Settings > Applications > Manage Applications and choose to restore default associations in Youtube, Firefox and Flash Player apps) then try to play the video again.

MacBook Pro with Retina Running Out of Space

Hi there.
I have a MacBook Pro with retina running OS X mavericks. Recently I have taken a look into "about this Mac" and found that I am running out of space (Picture Bellow). I found that most of my space is in Apps and I am trying to find where they are on my Mac HD. By going to the Macintosh HD the fallowing had this much space taken up "Applications (9.69GB), Library (4.74GB), System (5.7GB), User INFO (49 bytes), and Users (71.89GB) “. I found that Users (71.89GB)-> Pictures(58.91GB) is taking up most of the space but that accounts for Movies (46.91GB) and Photos (12.12GB) but not Apps. Where else should I look for the 90GB Apps or is it just the OS taking up this space?

If the Storage display seems to be inaccurate, try rebuilding the Spotlight index.
Empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. If you use iPhoto, empty its internal Trash first:
iPhoto ▹ Empty Trash
Do the same in other applications, such as Aperture, that have an internal Trash feature.
According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation. You're in no danger of running out.
See this support article for some simple ways to free up storage space.
You can more effectively use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) or GrandPerspective (GP) to explore the volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can also delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one. Note that ODS only works with OS X 10.8 or later. If you're running an older OS version, use GP.
Deleting files inside an iPhoto or Aperture library will corrupt the library. Any changes to a photo library must be made from within the application that created it. The same goes for Mail files.
Proceed further only if the problem isn't solved by the above steps.
ODS or GP can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
Back up all data now.
If you have more than one user account, make sure you're logged in as an administrator. The administrator account is the one that was created automatically when you first set up the computer.
Install the app you downloaded in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
Triple-click anywhere in the corresponding line of text below on this page to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:

I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.
When you're done with the app, quit it and also quit Terminal.

You can just drag the emails to "On My Mac" which will save them locally. Or you can use a third-party archive utility. If you're using Mail, you might look into MailSteward which will archive all your mail, including attachments, into a database:

SYSAUX runs out of space.

And the second problem is that SYSAUX runs out of space extremely fast.
I am a junior DBA, so I don't have such permissions like ALTER or MODIFY (i.e. SNAPSHOT_SETTINGS), but I can query v$'s. May be you can suggest where to look.

In the case of out of space situation of sysaux, AWR automatically reuses space by deleting the oldest snapshot.
You can also query V$sysaux_occupants... Especially space_usage_kbytes will give you a clear indication as which component is taking more space for sysaux.

what do you do when the external drive dedicated to TM close to or runs out of space?
if you add a new larger external drive, does the history of the TM gets transferred (retained) or does it start from the day of updating the external drives?

When space begins to get tight, Time Machine will start deleting older backups. This should happen without your input, although there is an option to have a warning displayed when this will occur.
If you want to use Time Machine with a new, larger drive, you have 2 options: 1) leave your current backup where it is, and start a new one "from scratch," or 2) use Disk Utility's "Restore" function to (effectively) "clone" an image of your current Time Machine backup drive to the new one.
In the second scenario, the original drive could then be formatted (erased) and used for other purposes, or it can be kept as an "archival" backup which will never again be updated.

To change to manually managing an iPod you don't "unselect" sync music, you "select" manually manage songs and videos. If you want to delete songs from iTunes and keep them on the iPod you need to change the update option of your iPod by checking the box beside "manually manage songs and videos" in the Summary tab and clicking Apply. Your iPod will not sync with iTunes in this mode so it can have different content, you can get details here:

One major word of caution. If you delete songs or videos from your computer and have no back up other than the iPod you will risk losing them permanently if your iPod fails or you find you have to restore it to solve a problem. You should consider investing in an additional internal or external hard drive to store/back up your music. Alternatively at the very least back up anything you can't replace such as iTunes downloads to CD or DVD: How to back up your media in iTunes
Something else to be aware of when using an iPod in manual mode is that the "Do Not Disconnect" message will remain on the display until you physically eject the device. In that case use Safely Remove Hardware icon in the Windows system tray on your desktop or check this link: Safely Disconnect IPod
I don't have any TV shows so I can't speak from experience here but looking at the TV tab it appears you can only sync shows, there's no manually manage option. Syncing would require that you keep the shows on your computer otherwise they would be removed from the iPod the next time you syncronised with iTunes.

Why does my Hard Drive run out of Space?

So, my Mac's HDD keeps running out of space. Here's the Specs
OS X Lion (10.7.5)
2.4 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo
8 GB Memory (2x 4GB PC3-8500)
60GB HDD
Okay, so i know its a 60GB HDD, but this thing is used for only internet surfing and General OS functions. 28GB of the 60GB is used via installed OS X, Apps, and Music. 32GB is available on start-up, but the HDD hit 0MB available after a while and the Mac's Virtual Memory caps out and I must force quit an application to continue, but Google Chrome is the only App open other than finder.
I am Computer Savy, but UNIX systems aren't my strong points. I don't know why this OS needs 32GB of VM nor why it doesn't pre-allocate it like Windows does. Is there away to Pre-Allocate Pagefile and restrict it to 12GB? I hate having to restart my computer in the middle of a task just to use it. Thank You in Advance.

I'm guessing that I should be okay when it repairs these?

Running out of space on computer

So i've got a 30G Video Ipod and my computer is completely running out of space (only have about 1 G left). Is it possible to use my video ipod as an external hard drive that i can store my music on and then continue to listen to music from it? Just like using my computer to store the music, can i store it all on my ipod and walk away still able to listen. I've got a lot of songs and some video's i've downloaded.

You can store files in this fashion but you still need to load them through iTunes to listen to them so you would double up the space you were using if you kept both copies on the iPod Also relying on the iPod as the sole backup for your music is not a good idea. If you ever have to restore the iPod to solve a problem you'll lose everything on it. I'd advise that you get yourself another internal or external hard drive and move your iTunes to it. Hard drives are comparatively inexpensive (much cheaper in comparison to a iPod for the space they provide) and you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.
You can also delete songs from iTunes and keep them on the iPod by changing the update option of your iPod to "manually manage music and videos". You can get details here: Managing content manually on iPod
Again though I would offer you a word of caution.caution. If you delete songs from your PC and have no back up other than the iPod you will risk losing them permanently if your iPod fails or you find you have to restore it to solve a problem. At the very least back up songs you can't replace such as iTunes downloads to CD or DVD. Running out of space/ Temp files???

I'm making my first movie with iMovie 06. In the process of importing clips from my camcorder I got a warning message. The message said that I was running critically low on space and I should delete some files in order to continue. At the same time I noticed that it said I have 27 GB available in the lower right corner of the iMovie window??
What's going on here? I only have 136 MB in the trash.
Are there temp files being created somewhere?
Where?
How can I get rid of them in order to give iMovie the "space" it needs to do it's job??

I'm not sure exactly what you're asking. Temp files get automatically deleted when you restart. Old apps you can either uninstall (if it was originally installed with an installer, there should be an uninstaller somewhere) or drag it to the trash. What's "old content"?
i have done the browser cache and cleared history.
