Running Photoshop CS4 (and probably CS5) on the 2010 Mac Mini

I'm looking to buy the new Mac Mini 2010 for use in my work as digital graphics designer. I already considered the base iMac but since I already have a good LCD monitor, keyboard and mouse, all I really need is a good desktop.
I'd like to know if the new setup can handle the load of a 600ppi multi-layered file. I also do digital coloring for comic books in Painter 11 so I'd also like to know if the machine can handle such a load.
Any info will be greatly appreciated.

It can, but a huge thing is how much RAM you have. You will want to get 8 GB if you are dealing with huge files like that. Even with CS5 there is very little real GPU acceleration in anything other then Premiere, so having a midlevel GPU won't really hurt you. The 2nd biggest bottleneck is the HDD. The mini has a 5,400 RPM HDD so loading files will be slower then an iMac with a 7,200 RPM HD. You can upgrade the Mini's HDD to something faster but the iMac being a 3.5" drive vs the 2.5" in the mini will be faster even if both machines have a 7,200 RPM HD. Given all of this if I were you I'd get a mid/high end iMac and if you would rather use your current KB/mouse then sell the new wireless ones that come with the iMac to recoup some of the cost difference. Then hook up your current display as a 2nd. Its so nice to have 2+ displays on a system.
You will spend $1350 or so on a Mini configured this way, and for $1500 you get double the HDD space, faster drive, faster CPU, faster GPU, KB/mouse you can sell, monitor so why not get the iMac. After selling the KB/mouse you will be almost identical price.

I'm thinking that you have a > Mac mini (Mid 2011) - Technical Specifications because the 2010 model's only have Core 2 Duo processors and the 2011 had the first i5 processor.
2 GB of RAM is the minimum requirement for Mountain Lion, but it's hardly enough to really enjoy doing anything else.

Plus I don't have any problems running Mountain Lion and a load of App's on my 2010 Mac Mini with 8GB of RAM.

  • Run DW CS4 and DW CS5.5 update on the same machine?

Is it possible to run DW CS4 and DW CS 5.5 (as an update of the DW CS 4) on the same machine? Due to the fact that ADDT doesn't exist anymore and we still have some projects needed to be maintained on ADDT, DW CS 4 should still be usable on the same Mac.

Yes, each upgrade installs into its own folder.
Just don't try and run them at the same time.
Many people keep half a dozen versions (upgrades of each other) on their hard drive since hard drives are so spacious these days.

  • Can I run Photoshop CS4 and CS5 on the same system?

I read somewhere a zillion years ago (right?) that you coould run CS4 and CS5 on the same system but at the time I wasn't even considering it.
Run on the same system - not ness to run at the same time
Or should I install it on a seperate drive (bootable) and go that route. What has everyone found to work and/or not work?
Thanks in advance for your help
    BJ

Yes, you can run CS4 an CS5 on the same computer.  They install in different folders and don't get in each other's way.  As a matter of fact, you will find many posts in this forum from the experts recommending to keep CS4 (or an earlier version) when installing CS5.  This way, there is no danger of losing any older plug-ins you may have that aren't compatible to CS5.
When I installed PS CS5 I had problems with my scanner driver.  Instead of spending loads of time fixing that problem, I just use PS CS4 when I want to spend an afternoon scanning things. I'm not recommending that "lazy man's" solution, but it is an example of how CS4 and CS5 can be used on the same system.

  • Can I run Photoshop CS4 and CS1 on the same Mac?

I've been building pages for a website on my old Mac with Photoshop CS1 then slicing and optimising them in ImageReady before uploading to the site I'm building in Dreamweaver where I put in the body text.
Recently I upgraded to a newer Mac running Snow Leopard and CS4 where I discovered that ImageReady is now considered a thing of the past. I read that Fireworks and Dreamweaver are now the most sophisticated way to go but after a month perservering with fireworks I'm finding it a very clunky, complicated way to operate. I don't like using it and I hate the prospect of starting over to re-build my existing site.
So... will my CS1 version of Photoshop and Imageready run successfully on Snow Leopard and, if so, can I have two versions of one program loaded on my Mac at once? The aim is to be able to use CS1 for Imageready and revert to CS4 for my usual work.

    Hi Daddyfred,
CS4 Photoshop has not been tested on Yosemite. But still you can try the Java 6 update using the below link.

Hi, Accidentally somebody screw up Photoshop CS4 and InDesign CS4 Master edition on a MAC computer in the school. The install discs did not start to run therefore I can't  reinstall the 2 missing programs. I want to install the softwares, therefore I download those from here.  The downloaded program refuse to accept the serial number which was given to the school when they purchased the Master Collection CS4 MLP A00. Thank you for your help, in advance.

    Hi Jeff,
Thank you. I am a little bit busy at work, sorry for the delayed reply. I tried to solve the problem, but it still exists. The 3rd of the Adobe disk is damaged someway. I tried to run on my mac at home and it has a failure. So I think we have no other choice that to download the full pack of master collection. I had a discussion with the IT expert and he figured out that company does not exist any more from where they purchased the Adobe Master Collection for Mac and PC. So If you would be kind to help me, what kind of information ID or any kind of document would be needed to identify the purchaser institute (us). I don't think any of us has an account at the Adobe. I will try to figur out. I desperately need to replace Photoshop and InDesign as without them it's really harsh to teach the kids fot the graphic design.
    Sincerely yours.

  • Photoshop cs4 and cs5 and after effects 7.0

    Hello my name is mel
My question ! I'm working with photoshop cs4 and after effects 7.0 building a web page and this going to be my first page . I got the header in and the footer also,
the main body is going to be this avi file. after effect project that I want to run when the page opens. I want to slice up and send to DW for coding . my question is how do you slice this page up and transport it to DW.cs5 and do you have to code the avi in html and css to run when the page is open. Because as now when you run the avi in photoshop nothing elese on the page works , just the avi runs when you turn off the avi then every thing is back normal .to run the avi you have go to the video part of psd and click on the start button . any idea or any suggestion how to proceded would help
    thanks

we were told in design school to use ps to design your site   then transport to DW to code??
Maybe I misunderstood you.... You do the graphics in PS, that's of course what everyone does and then you code in DW, but by all means, you do not operate on the atrocious code Save for Web would spit out from PS. Trying to fix it is more trouble than starting with a blank page in DW and inserting the background and otehr images manually. And you definitely misunderstand "animation" vs. "video" After Effects is just a means to turn animation into video just as Flash is a means of creating dynamically rendered animation or interactive content. Both have their uses, but without knowing what kind of animation or video you actually need to produce, this is going nowhere. It may turn out that all you need is an animated GIF, after all... Furthermore your AE 7 is dated and does not output good H.264 or FLV directly compared to more recent versions, so this opens up yet anotehr can of worms when it comes to producing good quality web video at small file sizes... In any case, you still require a lot of reading. Too complex a topic for which nobody can provide a tippy-toe tutorial and without understanding even some basic concepts, the most beautifully designed PS grafik will end up being nothing more than a useless lump of pixels on a web server...

I'd like to uninstall all Photoshop stuff only, i.e. not Acrobat.

  • I am steaming - Thru CS3 - CS4 and now CS5 Fireworks is crap

All through CS3, CS4 and now CS5 Fireworks on 3 different machines Windows XP, Windows Vista and now Windows 7... simply is a crappily written app. And I have been using Fireworks since Macromedia and these problems have only appeared from Adobe.
Is it to drive folks to Photoshop? After working on it for about 30 min you get 'low on memory' 'internal error'... it is unconscionable that an application that is so expensive can be written so appallingly. And when you run through the forums you just get tons of complaints about the shoddy code at Adobe.
All of the computers are stacked with 4GB, this one has 16GB on a blazingly fast Phenom Black but that's not the killer... no other app crashes. Not the little $5 dollar apps, not anything. It is so frustrating. Can't someone buy this place and straighten it out!!! Macromedia was known for ridiculously great code and features.
Had anyone solved this problem... I here if you login in as Donald Duck it might go away. What kind of nonsense is that?
    Help!

don't get so steamy. I am on your side and I actually met Adobe marketing VP in Australia and told him that his CS ****, mmm I mean suite is worthless on a Mac at least. He couldn't care less. They don't fix things they market "upgrades" so idiots like you and me will keep on spending. I for instance use Adobe and Macromedia products since mid 90s' and I must say that nothing has changed for me since FW3 or 4 and Photosop 5.5. Illustrator should always stayed simple but they managed to make it so fat it barely moves. Flash also became something it wasn't intended for and it's days are numbered by HTML5. Adobe Acrobat? you must be kidding. I still don't know what the F this is all about. and so on and so on....
You will grow out of it eventually like I did. It doesn't worth it. Believe me. Just "upgrade" if you must have some feature. I think DW and Flash are the only products that need to be upgraded because of the industry it's linked to (web). the rest are just tools that still do what they did 10 years ago. they are only "integrated" now.
There are other tools you can use, not many but there are or simply don't upgrade!!! this is the best way for you and I to tell Adobe what we think.

  • Photoshop cs4 and import to iphoto problem

    Hi to all,
I would appreciate any help on this problem:
I process a raw file through camera raw 5.1 in photoshop cs4 and then save it as a jpeg.
I then try to import the jpeg file to iphoto, but iphoto says the file is unreadable and can't import it.
In photoshop cs3 I never encountered this problem.
The only way I can solve it is if i open the jpeg file in preview and save it again as jpeg. then i am able to import the new jpeg.
Any ideas how to solve this?
Thanks in advance for your help.

process a raw file through camera raw 5.1 in photoshop cs4 and then save it as a jpeg.
I then try to import the jpeg file to iphoto, but iphoto says the file is unreadable and can't import it.
That's because you're saving it inside the iPhoto Library package and trying to import from there. You must save all RAW edited files to the desktop or outside of the iPhoto Library package. iPhoto will not import any file located inside it's library package.
If you use CS4 to edit jpgs from within iPhoto the following may be of help to you:
Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements 6 the Saving File preferences should be configured: "On First Save: Save Over Current File". Also I suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.
If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Saving Jpeg in Photoshop CS4 and having problems

Okay, i have been looking all over the internet and i hope it's something really foolish...
After editing a photo in Photoshop (CS4) and saving it as a JPEG / JPG, many people using windows can't open the file, and it gets the extension .JPGG ( ...?... )
If I import the picture in Iphoto first and then mail it ther is no problem.
perhaps this is quite obvious to some, but it's a mystery to me.
To update my website i need to save my JPG files to an XML folder and then flash reads the files and opens them in the site.
The JPG files i saved using photoshop won't open in the site, even worse, the site won't even load because the loader gets 'stuck'.
i tried putting them in Iphoto first because that helped with with mailing, but it doesn't seem to be working this time.
I've tried all the JPG saving options like Baseline etc. converted them to RGB ( they already were) so i'm out of options.
    ANYONE ?

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. I have CS3 so don't know if there's major changes to the formatting process by each version. That may be a question to ask in the Adobe support forum.
However, for a workaround you might try using the Automator workflow I created to change any image file to jpg with the sRGB color profile. Just drag the files onto the workflow icon and they will be converted. You can get it, "Convert to JPG and Embed sRGB profile", at Toad's Cellar. See if those jpgs will work OK. There will be some jpeg compression applied but if they are for posting on the web it may not be objectionable.
