Running pre-PowerPC apps

Hi,
I have a PowerBook 540 c modified to a PowerPC 120MHz processor. I have a wonderful computer game (called Capitalist Pig) originally purchased for my 33 MHz PowerBook 120.
Unfortunately, the game won't run on my PowerBook 150. Is there any way I can run this game?
Thanks.
BTW- next up is a Newton software install and how i wish Cyberdog was still around. Fantastic interface.
Michael Vallance

The powerBook 120 was only released in Japan (when I was last here). In 1993 or 4. It was 33Mhz , black and white with no connection for an external monitor. Very basic but popular at that time. It was a toss up for the Apple PowerBook or a Compaq laptop with Win 3.1. Both very nice but i went for the 120 as it was lighter in weight. And there began my love affair with Apple
The later PowerBooks (150 c, etc.) released in japan became popular due to teh colour screen and J'nese friends were buying at extraordinary prices. My powerBook stayed with me til 1997 til a colleague wanted a laptop for simply typing his Masters thesis. I had pangs of regret ever since and a friend at a Mac Users Group event gave me his 540c which was gathering dust at home. It has been modified but I really wanted an original laptop again... and now I have dug out my old Hypercard stacks, my Newton , 3 Stylewriters, etc., I have this urge to set up a sort of mini studio in my office for students to experience early computing (and it's only 10 years ago or so!).
Hope this answers your query.

  • Is there a way to open powerpc installer in Mavericks to just install library files (not run power pc app)?

Hello, I was looking to install some files from a power pc program.  However, I have osx x mavericks.  I know the deal, since snow leopard apple swicthed to intel processors.  I was wondering since I only need to install files and not install and run a powerpc  app ,is there any way I can get the installer open to grab these files that I need?  I just need the files, not to run the program, there has to be a way around this without having to run a program like paralells or to run a dual boot with leopard on another drive?
I'm trying to run a music plug in instrument program in Logic and I have everything installed except for the actual sound libraries wich need to be installed off this power pc installer.  I went to the companies website and downloaded and installed all of the latest updates. I then ran a report which is telling me that I just need to install the missing library files (on the powere pc installation).  Which I find confusing since I thought the whole point of the update i nstall was a way around that?  Any help would be appreciated, thanks for your time.

In my experience advising Logic users, depending upon the version of Logic and the model Mac you are using, if your Mac will boot from Snow Leopard, you can install Logic and all of its plug-ins in Snow Leopard and then upgrade to Mavericks.

  • Mac OS 10.7 (Lion) won't start After Effects CS5.5 because it's a powerpc app!?

I've had CS 5.5 Master Collection installed on my Mac since it came out. All the CS 5/5.5 apps I've used up to now have worked fine, in 64-bit mode (Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat Pro, InDesign). Now I need to use After Effects, but I can't get it to start.
First it said it couldn't rename a Workspaces.xml file in the preferences directory in my home folder. In fact, there was no such file there at all. Nothing to rename. So, I uninstalled After Effects using its uninstaller; then reinstalled it from the install DVDs.
Now, it fails on startup saying the After Effects CS5.5 application cannot be run because PowerPC apps are no longer supported. True: OS X no longer runs apps that require Rosetta. CS 5.5 is does not require Rosetta; it's compatible with Lion. The OS 10.7 Known Issues KB article says nothing about After Effects: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/905/cpsid_90508.html?promoid=JBQYY
So...what's going on? I need this thing working for a project with a deadline! I don't get it. Anybody seen this before? (I didn't find anything in the discussions about it, nor Google...)

Interesting article, but I knew I was leaving PowerPC apps behind when I moved to OS 10.7, and Adobe claims that After Effects CS 5.5 is fully compatible with Lion. But you must be right about prefs; there's gotta be something causing the Mac OS to think this version of CS is ancient...
Since my initial message, I've tried and failed to find any details about how to select the right prefs to delete. I also ran Disk Utility to repair permissions on my system drive. That got rid of the PowerPC error:) Now on startup AE says mediacore fails to initialize. I can choose to quit or continue on that error, but continuing just results in another error that says dynamiclinkmanager unexpectedly quit, and then AE locks up and I have to force quit it. Not much progress!
No other answers on this so far... Before I uninstall the entire Creative Suite and then delete all Adobe system and hidden files everywhere, any more suggestions? Or a list of the right prefs I should trash?

  • Can I use PowerPC Apps on the Intel iMac?

    Hi guys!
The reason I am entering the same question on both the G5 and the Intel forum is because many of you may have moved from PowerPC to Intel and have had the same question...
Will my PowerPC Apps work in the Intel system?
I've been able to install both my Photoshop CS and Flash 8 on my new Intel Core 2 Duo iMac. They are working ok but when I open "Activity Monitor" and check the memory usage I see most of the processes are showing as Intel but the Photoshop and Flash are showing as PowerPC type.
I also note that 1GB ram is almost taken, even though I only opened the programs, didn't even open a file.
Is it ok to keep running these Apps even though they are PowerPC Apps?
    Would they harm the system?
Is there a workaround, a fix from Adobe, or will I have to buy the newest Photoshop and Flash? As Photoshop CS and Flash 8 are perfect for me... no need to buy the newest version regarding functionalities.
    Thanks for any idea!

A great response from another Mac user at the Intel forum:
    **Kenichi Watanabe**
*When you run PowerPC apps on an Intel Mac, a translator called Rosetta is used by the system. This will use more RAM and those apps will not run as fast as their equivalent Universal apps. However, unless your G5 was a Power Mac dual or quad core, an Intel iMac running a PowerPC app (using Rosetta) may be as fast or faster than the G5 running the same app natively.*
*Will my PowerPC Apps work in the Intel system?*
*So the answer is YES, most (but not all) PowerPC apps will run on Intel Macs using Rosetta. Increasing your iMac's RAM will improve performance (but that's always true).*
    *Would they harm the system?*
*NO. Rosetta is a built-in part of the system. Sort of like Classic, but better integrated and more seamless.*
*Adobe was late in making their apps Universal, but I believe they have completed the transition. The upgrades are not free, unfortunately. If your current versions run fast enough on your Intel iMac, you should keep using them.*
    Again...
    *Thanks both Kenichi and Miriam!*

  • My imac is running mountain lion and last night i downloaded maverick. in midst of installing it it said a powerPC app microsoft word would not work so i canceled the install for the time being. my questions is  if i choose to finish installing maverick

my imac is running mountain lion and last night i downloaded maverick. in midst of installing it, it said a powerPC app microsoft word would not work so i canceled the install for the time being. my questions is  if i choose to finish installing maverick does that mean i will nevver be able to access word documents stored on my desktop? or do the word docs automatically convert to pages or what? i am so confused. would i be better off just sticking with mountain lion and send the maverick install to the trash? hoping someone will be able to answer my question though i am afraid the response is likely to be just stick with mountain lion so you can keep using word. i had been looking forward to maverick but it seems pretty drastic to not have access to microsoft word anymore by switching to maverick. hope someone has an answer so i can have the best of both worlds so to speak!

thanks for your response Csound1 on the peninsula ... if i go ahead and install maverick and then download LibreOffice or OpenOffice will i then be able to access old microsoft word saved documents on my deskstop through those two free alternatives? i am not that knowledgeable about these things so i am not sure if you are saying i will just be able to use libreoffice or openoffice for creating new documents or whether i can access the saved microsoft docs? are they transferred to OO or LO or what and if editing of the old word docs is needed can i do that through the OO and LO programs or apps (see i am not even sure if i am using the correct vocabulary!) hope you can answer this as quick as the first question, so i can decide to stick with mountain lion and trash the maverick install or proceed with maverick install and hoppe that my microsoft word docs are still accessible through OO or LO or adding to myquestion will pages on maverick be able to open the old word documents? thanks again!

The only workaround would be to purchase the current version of iLife apps from the App Store.
Lion doesn't support the old PowerPC architecture anymore, which is what iLife '06 was written for.
If the internal apps are universal, right-click on the mpkg and choose Show Contents. Then, dig through and run the specific installer package for each application.

  • I recently upgraded to Mavericks from Snow Leopard. Does Snow Leopard still exist on my Mac? If so, is it possible to restart under Snow Leopard in order to run PowerPC apps? If not, is there an OS available in 64 bit that supports PowerPC apps? Mav ***.

The only reason I upgraded to Mavericks was because my Snow Leopard OS was 32 bit, which I was told would support only 4GB of RAM.
That wasn't quite right. You can put in as much RAM as your Mac's hardware supports. The division is in the apps themselves. A 32 bit app can't use more than 4 GB or RAM. A 64 bit app can use much more.
For example, as a 32 bit only version, Photoshop CS3 can't use more 4GB of RAM, no matter how much you actually have installed. CS4 or later can use all the RAM you want to throw at it.

  • How to run powerpc apps on mac 10.8

    detour12,
Did you understand the conclusion in this thread?
You use software called parallels which will allow you run two operating systems at once.
You install Snow Leopard as the second oparating system.

  • Safari is running as a PowerPC app instead of an Intel 32-bit app

Exactly as the title says, my Activity Monitor says that Safari is running as a PowerPC app. There is some web content that seems to lag compared to other MacBooks. Any solutions?

    HI Zack,
*"There is some web content that seems to lag compared to other MacBooks. Any solutions? "*
Depends on the MacBook's configurations. Not all are the same. You are running Leopard.. others Tiger or Snow Leopard.
Safari should run in 32-bit mode.
Right or control click the Safari icon in the Applications folder, then click: Get Info In the Get Info window click the black disclosure triangle next to General so it faces down. Select 32 bit mode. Also, (in that same window) make sure Safari is NOT running in Rosetta.

  • Is it possible to run PowerPC apps in Mavericks?

I have an iMac that has been running OS X 10.6.8 for a while, but I just updated to Mavericks (10.9.2). I have the 10.6.2 install disc with rosetta and I have tried to reinstall rosetta a couple of times now, but I still can't open any PowerPC apps. I am wondering if there is any other way to use PPC apps in Mavericks.

I don't know exactly what you mean by "partition", but if you let me know how to do that, it sounds like it would work best. I also tried VirtualBox, but I couldn't get it to work correctly.
Use Disk Utility in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder to create a 2nd partition on your internal hard drive.  It makes the Mac think that two separate hard drives are connected to it.
Then install Snow Leopard (with the optional Rosetta and IMHO QuickTime 7) into the 2nd partition.
Then using Startup Disk in System Preferences, you can decide which flavor of OS X will be active when you restart your Mac: Mavericks or Snow Leopard.
Using the other option that Kurt suggests, with VirtualBox, should work, but you are best off to purchase Snow Leopard Server for $20 from Apple for ease of installation into VirtualBox and continued use and maintenance:
1.800.MYAPPLE (1.800.692.7753) - Apple Part Number: MC588Z/A (telephone orders only)
Snow Leopard client can be installed into Parallels with some difficulty, but the cost of Parallels would exceed your cost to just purchase Snow Leopard Server, which should easily install into VirtualBox (although I personally have no experience with VirtualBox).

  • Can't run PowerPC apps under Snow Leopard. Why?

I just upgraded to Mountain Lion on my main hard drive. I also installed Snow Leopard on an external drive to run some older PowerPC apps I have that Lion and Mountain Lion don't support. Snow Leopard is supposed to run PowerPC applications just fine. So I installed those apps on the same drive as SL, but when I start up from that drive, the apps won't open? The system starts up just fine from the external drive, but when I try to open the apps, they just bounce in the dock at the bottom of the screen for a few seconds (like they're starting up). Then they go away and don't start up. No error warnings, no crashes. Nothing. I've restarted after the installs, checked to make sure folders weren't locked, etc. I can think of no reason why the apps won't run under SL on an external drive. Anyone have a guess?

Obviously you are unaware of the advice I give on this forum: You're preaching to the choir!
Try this patch for Freehand MX use in Snow Leopard:

  • How do I run multiple java apps in one JVM to reduce memory use?

    Hi all,
I saw an article either on the web or in a magazine not too long ago about how to "detect" if the app is already running, and if so, it hands off the new instance to the already running JVM, which then creates a thread to run the Java app in. As it turns out, my app will be used in an ASP environment, through Citrix. We may have as many as 50 to 100 users running the same app, each with their own unique user ID, but all using the same one server to run it on. Each instance eats up 25MB of memory right now. So the question is if anybody knows of a URL or an app like this that can handle the process of running the same (or even different Java) apps in one JVM as separate threads, instead of requring several instances of the JVM to run? I know this article presented a fully working example, and I believe I know enough to do it but I wanted ot use the article as a reference to make sure it is done right. I know that each app basically would use the same one "launcher" program that would on first launch "listen" to a port, as well as send a message through the port to see if an existing launcher was running. If it does, it hands off the Java app to be run to the existing luancher application and shuts down the 2nd launching app. By using this method, the JVM eats up its normal memory, but each Java app only consumes its necessary memory as well and doesn't use up more JVM instance memory.
    Thanks.

I can no longer open .pdf files on my newer imac which is over 3 yrs. old,  This issue seemed to have started sometime after updating to icloud & Lion??  on this imac but for some reason, I do not have the same problem on my other imac that is running the same Lion v. 10.7.2 which is over 4 yrs. old.  I can see that the older imac is running Adobe Reader 9.4.6 and opens .pdf files.
Here is the error message I get on my newer imac:
adobe reader 6.0 app won't open because PowerPC apps are no longer supported
I don't remember if or when I started having this problem on the newer imac but it use to open .pdf files.  Nor can I find any reference to ANY Adobe Reader version other than 6.0 on this computer,  Even after several tries and downloading off the Adobe web site using Safari.
I have made several attempts to download off the adobe web site using safari which shows it is downloading the app. but cannot find it anywhere on my computer's HD or Desktop even when using Spotlight to search for it.
In fear of screwing up my new 17" MBP which arrived yesterday I have not attempted to transfer any info/files/data off of my other imacs due to they info dating back to the PowerPC days that transfered during switching to newer mac models.
Thanks for any help in this matter
    Bob

I have tried several times to update the Intel Mac verision of adobe but cannot find where it was downloaded to on my computer.   When I do a search on my computer, the only version that is found is the old 6.0 Power PC which is no longer supported.

Can I safely send the Word Office icons and anything else related to it that shows up in spotlight to the trash?
You mean for Office apps? That, I don't know for sure as I don't use MS Office on my Mac. I would check to see if there is some sort of MS Office uninstaller that needs to be run before dragging the icons to Trash. Either from one of the Office apps Help or About or search the Internet for a solution.
EDIT: A quick Google search found this link which may help you.
