Running programs off of an external harddrive?

In order to save space on my laptop, I was wondering if there was a chance that adobe cc apps can be used off of an external harddrive?

Hi there,
No, the Adobe products have to be installed on the same drive where the system is installed.
Thank you.

  • Setting up applications and running them off of an external harddrive?

My MacBook is on it's last leg at the ripe age of 4 years old and I would like to move a significant amount of my applications off of the computer but still allow them to run on an external hard drive, when plugged in.
Is this possible? And if so, how can I make it happen?
The programs are mostly adobe products if that helps...

    Buzz.
External drives can be connected and used in a number of ways.
Connection can be achieved either as an external device to your mac/pc or as a network drive, which can be achieved either through an extreme, a genuine network drive or even I believe with a direct connection to the ethernet port on the tv (with hacks).
Consensus seems to favour keeping the itunes database files in their default location.
If you choose to copy files to your itunes folder in your itunes prefs and let itunes organise your library for you, you will use the external HD for all your media and when it is unavailable so will all your media. You could also organise the library yourself and choose just to keep large movie files on your ext HD, this would mean you can still play non movie files in itunes on your laptop when it is used on it's own, but need to connect the drive for your movies.

  • Run Program off ipod?

im in high school and im a photographer. i use my ipod to move pics cause a laptop is to much $. i have 2 install photoshop on the comp that im at if im not at mine, so i am wondering is there a way 2 install programs onto the ipod so that i can use them when plug in the ipod i can run program(s) off that, like a external hard-drive. if so how? do i need a program and if not... do u no if then intend on doing that soon?
    thanks

Installing applications onto an iPod for use on multiple computers basically only works on a Mac due to the complexity of how Windows manages software installations; dragging the actual application to the iPod will work, but things such as registry keys won't be transferred, as they lie on the disk used to start up the computer instead of the iPod, and many applications set and require specific keys in the registry to operate.

  • HT1727 is there a way to run iTunes off of an external hard drive?

My iPhone 4S is currently in recovery mode and I'm trying to restore it. I'm stuck overseas so I haven't been able to update the iOS software for a few months and iTunes on my computer won't restore my phone without installing the latest software (which is a 920 MB download). The problem though is that the base I'm on has wifi but the server resets its connection every few hundred MB you download (this is to prevent people from monopolizing bandwidth all day long). The iOS download however is an 'all or nothing' download so I have now watched it get to 500 MB three times before resetting the connection and when that happens the download starts over from scratch. I called apple support and worked out that the only way for me to download this update is through a hardwired connection. We have several computers available that have a hardwire connection but I can't install anything on them since they are US government owned. So what I basically need to be able to do is access my iTunes off of an external hard drive, download the update to that drive, and then copy the update to my phone so that I can restore my phone from the backups on my computer. Is there anyone out there who can give me a step-by-step to doing this? Otherwise my phone is an expensive paperweight until I can get back to a place with high speed internet that I can connect to my personal computer. Thanks.

You can put your iTunes library on an external drive. Just copy the entire iTunes folder from <User's Music> out to it. You can access the library from any computer running the same build of iTunes by holding down shift as you start iTunes and browsing to \iTunes\iTunes Library.itl
What you can't do is have a self-contained portable version of the iTunes application that isn't "installed" on the machine you want to use it on, so unless there is a spare port on a hub or switch that you can get permission to connect your own laptop to I don't see how you're going to get that update.

  • Trying to run program off network location using GPO with Power shell script.

    Hello All,
Not much of a script writer. I am giving it a shot.  My issue is that I need to run a application update across our network and I am trying to do it with as little hands on as possible. So I was planning to push a GPO with a power shell script in it
to run the program with elevated privileges.
    Little background:
We are running on a domain and end users do not have admin rights.
The application is stored on a share on our network that is open to all domain users.
The installer user name and password is a temp one and will only be valid for the 30 min window when everyone logs in at the beginning of the day.
So this is what I have so far.
    $username = "USER"
    $password = "PASSWORD"
    $credentials = New-Object System.Management.Automation.PSCredential -ArgumentList @($username,(ConvertTo-SecureString -String $password -AsPlainText -Force))
    Start-Process PSQLv11Patch_Client_x86.msp -Credential ($credentials) -WorkingDirectory \\Server\Folder\Folder1\Folder2\filder3\PSQLv11sp3_x32\
But for some reason I keep getting :
Start-Process : This command cannot be run due to the error: The system cannot find the file specified.

Any help you could give would be great.
    Thanks,
    jdfmonkey

    Hi jdfmonkey,
Has anyone provided an answer to your original question?  I am trying to use Start-Process to launch a process using another logged in user's credentials, and am not able to get it working:
    $cred=Get-Credential
    start-process Process.exe-WorkingDirectoryC:\Scripts-Credential$cred
I get the same error that you mentioned:
start-process : This command cannot be run due to the error: The system cannot find the file specified.
    At C:\Scripts\Process.ps1:2 char:1
    + start-process Process.exe -WorkingDirectory C:\Scripts -Credential ...

        + CategoryInfo          : InvalidOperation: (:) [Start-Process], InvalidOperationException
        + FullyQualifiedErrorId : InvalidOperationException,Microsoft.PowerShell.Commands.StartProcessCommand
When I leave off the credentials:
    start-processProcess.exe-WorkingDirectoryC:\Scripts
It works correctly.  Does anyone have a solution to make this work correctly?
Please ask your own question.  You issue is nothing like the current thread.  You clearly are using a user account that has no access to the folder.  It is a permissions issue.  It is not a scripting issue.
If you need further help please start your own question.

  • Can I hook up my G4 to my G5 and run programs off it?

I got the new G5 and I have the Digi001, but the sound card wont fit into the G5 so is there a way I can connect my G4 to my G5 and run Pro Tools and use the Digi001 while it's attached to the G4? Right now I have the two computers connected through the ethernet port and i can access files on the G4 but when I try to open a Pro Tools file it says there is an error.

The main thing is I can't run Pro Tools and the Digi001 interface on my G5 cause it wont take the sound card. I only have one monitor and no space to hook up to computers with two monitors, keyboards etc. so i just want to hook up the computers to each other and run the program and interface from the G4 on the G5. i'm not trying to get a performance boost i just want to use the $800 Digi001 program again.
You can't use the G4 hardware on the G5 at all.
(X-Grid optimized software like VisualHub sends a large "task" to the other computers processors to do and then it comes back to the master machine)
All you can do is remote control the G4 from the G5 using software like Apple Remote Desktop or a similar product like VNC. The other machine will be in a "window" on the first. Use a Ethernet network for this and a Firewire network to transfer files in a public folder if ARD won't let you copy/paste/transfer files. (I think the new version does)
You can share the monitor, kb and mouse between the G5 and G4, one machine at a time using a physical KVM switch. Then share a network connection (Ethernet/firewire) and a public folder to transfer files between the two machines. This can grow tiresome if your switching between the G4 and G5 constantly.
I think remote control would be the best choice and ARD the best software for it's ease of use, security and integration with Mac OS X. If the G4/G5 won't boot without a monitor, kb or mouse then you'll need to add a KVM switch for those times when you need to boot the machines. Else your going to wear out your ports/connectors.

  • What is the best way off using two external harddrives with timemachine?

    Hi,
I have already searched the board but I am still not sure what the best way is to backup to two harddisk.
Here is what I want to achieve:
I have two identical external firewire drives. One is always stored at my parents house. I swap drives once a week +(not perfect, should be everyday but much better than nothing).+
Before TimeMachine I have used SuperDuper which made incremental backups on both disks.
Due to my "method" I never have both drives at home. So it will not work to clone the external disks.
Can I now simply swap the drives and TimeMachine will backup again on disk 2, what it has already backupped to disk 1? Like "catching up" the now missing backups for the last week?
Should I give the disks the same names or should I choose "change disk" everytime?
I appreciate any suggestions and experiences.
    Best Regards
    Olaf

    Hi Olaf,
Germany . . . hmmm, nice talking to you!
OK - We seem to have a lot in common. I used SuperDuper all the time too. Loved it. NEVER had a problem at all with it. Ever!
I use Carbon Copy Cloner now - it seems a bit erratic - sometimes fails, sometimes works, can't find the pattern.
    But enough of that.
YES - Time Machine will do exactly what you want (or does for me, at least.)
I named the two drives the same name and bounced back and forth between them, Time Machining to each. Works PERFECTLY every time . . . BUT - you MUST go to TM preferences each time and click "change disk". Simply reclick the one it sees. This seems stupid - but it's worked every time for me so far. So this morning, I simple renamed one of the backup drives (from Finder). Simple renamed it.
Went directly to TM with the renamed disk - clicked "change disk" - he instantly "saw" the newly named disk - and it Time Machined perfectly to the "newly named" one. I didn't even have to re time machine the entire drive - it picked up perfectly and backed up only 50 meg, which is all I changed!
So Time Machine seems to work perfectly backing up to two hard drives, with either the same name, or different names - TM doesn't care. But you MUST simple click "change disk" each time.
Let me know how it works for you. It really does work for me!

  • How To combine two Itunes libraries, and run Itunes off of external device

    Hi,
I have a very blonde question to ask. I have the ipad2 (now very old) and a Macbook Air - Currently I have one itunes library on my Macbook Air, and one on my itunes - not sure how I did that, but here we are.
I would like to combine both the libaries - as one seems to have my older apps, all my music and movies, and the other on my Macbook air seems to have all my newly downloaded apps.
How do I merge both of them so that all my info is in once place, and how do I get my itunes to run back off of the external device, as there is not enough space on my macbook air.

By "device" I presume you mean your iPad?
Computers running iTunes are intended to be the master source for your collection.  i-devices are designed to be synced from a computer's collection.  They are not intended to be the main repository of your collection.  If you need that, consider buying an external hard drive for your media collection.  You can transfer items purchased from Apple from a device to a computer, but depeneding upon your country and iCloud availability you should also be able to download them from the iTunes Store to your computer again too.
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848 - this is just purchased music, not all
Downloading (using iOS or computer) past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store - http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2519 - enabled with iTunes 10.3 and newer; not all media formats are available in all countries (see: iTunes in the Cloud and iTunes Match Availability by Country - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5085 ); apps, books (not audiobooks), music, t.v. shows, and movies (some - not all studios have permitted this).  Downloading previously purchased movies and TV shows requires iTunes 10.6 or later.  Discontinued items not available. For items not included in the iCloud list (e.g., ringtones, audiobooks), or locations or computer systems where iCloud is not (yet?) available, you only get one download per fee paid.  Apple recommends  "you always back up your iTunes library in the event that a purchased item is no longer available on the iTunes Store."

  • What is the best way to run/install games onto an external HDD?

I would like to either install Windows on another partition on my 256GB SSD on the new rMBP and run games off an external, or install Windows on an external and games as well. What would be the most efficient (price wise) way to do this without having to sacrifice speed? I was thinking I could use an external thunderbolt hard drive, but it seems like they are all over $300 and over 1TB. I would only really need around 500GB with preferably 7200RPM speeds. Would USB 3.0 be fast enough or would I need to use thunderbolt? I prefer not to have to install 30GB games on the Windows partition on a small 256GB SSD, though I guess I could uninstall and reinstall them as I need (but does this wear down the SSD write speeds over time?) I couldn't get myself to pay another $600 to get a 512GB SSD logic board on the rMBP.
Thanks for any help. If there are alternative solutions for running games on an external feel free to recommend them.

If it is possible to install Windows on an external HDD without Bootcamp, then I'd be fine with that. The only problem I see with that is installing the necessary boot files, but it seems like it could be possible to do it manually. I've never done it before though.
Running programs off an external should be fine so long as they don't have to access Windows OS files directly (supposing Windows was installed on the internal SSD), no?

  • Gaming from Macbook Pro onto external harddrive

    Hello,
I have a Macbook pro 2.4ghz that I bought this past Summer. I have partitioned about 32 GB for Windows in bootcamp and since I opted for the 120GB 7200rpm harddrive I don't want to use anything bigger. My problem is that I am starting to use up the space installing games that I have bought. Gears of War, COD 4 (PC), and soon Fallout 3.
I would like to know the practicality of re-installing these Windows games on an external harddrive (the kind that would run off of the USB or firewire - instead of power supply). I don't mind re-starting the games since I haven't gotten that far along on any one of them anyway. Can this be done? I figure this way I can still carry around the harddrive w/games and free up much needed space on my bootcamp partition.
If you can could anyone recommend specific harddrives of about 120GB and larger that fit this niche. Thank you.

    OK,
But what I was really asking, i guess, was can you realistically play games from an external drive using bootcamp? More specifically has anyone here played higher graphics FPSs from an external (or know someone who has)
Thank you for the initial advice but while I don't mind re-installing a couple of games, installing a new harddrive and reinstalling OS X, VM Ware Fusion, Windows XP etc is a bit much at this early stage in the game.
I would specifically like to know if anyone has experience with a macbook pro similar to mine playing these types of games off of an external harddrive. And if so what harddrive did you specifically use? Thanks in advance.

  • Which external harddrive best for huge FCP video project?

    Hi,
i'm editing a massive film, pulling media off 3 1TG external harddrives. The drives I've been using are a Chinese brand that works smoothly with premiere but is way too slow for FCP (can't play through the timeline without getting dropped frame notices, even though I'm not daisy chaining them). I'm thinking I have to replace all the drives with better, faster ones. Sooo, wanted to ask you pros, what brand of harddrive is the best and most reliable for this workflow (and reasonable affordable- i have to buy a few!)? Any suggestions? Thanks a bunch! O

dropped frames, fyi, are on playback only. It doesn't mean you are losing frames in your files or in your sequences. It's not necessarily the drive speed causing the dropped frames. Sometimes it's just the inability for FCP to process the frames fast enough, which is processor based, not drive based, and has a lot to do with filters, transitions, and the like. You can turn off the dropped frames warning in the User Prefs.
That being said, if it IS drive speed, make sure that, not only are you using at least Firewire 800 drives, but also that the drives are 7200 RPM and not 5400 RPM. The reason you may think it works better with Premier is because Premier may not have a dropped frames warning.

  • I am having a problem w/ my itunes working correctly due to accidentally running Itunes through my troubleshooting, running programs made for previous versions of windows!! How do I turn it off?!??

I am having a problem w/ my Itunes working correctly, after accidentally running Itunes through my  troubleshooter  to, Run Programs Made For PreviousVersions of Windows. It keeps popping up that the Compatibility  Version is on, to make sure it's off before opening my Itunes Account. I've looked everywhere, Please, Please, How Do I Make This Right??!??

It sounds like either your hard drive or the SATA cable that connects it to the motherboard are failing. This could be heat related in your case, which is why you see it after it runs awhile. You can take it to the Genius Bar for a free evaluation. If you decide to test it yourself, I usually suggest moving the hard drive to an external enclosure. If it works there for awhile, the cable is probably the issue.

  • Can i run itunes from an external harddrive and if so how?

LIke i'm not a complete pleb and i know full well that this should work in theory i am just worried about moving the "itunes" folder to my external harddrive because i feel itunes will then say 'can't find library' or something. I have a G4 emac you see with only 40GB internal harddrive, about 25GB is just my itunes songs and i can't get rid of any as i need them for djing.
can i just copy the itunes app and the itunes folder to my external harddrive and then create a itunes link in my dock? I feel that i'm missing something though.
Could someone tell me a surefire way to do it so i don't mess up. I'm not 100%
    cheers
    rhys

Yes you can run programs from a differnt drive. All you have to do is download that prgram to that drve same as you would to the c:drive by defualt we will have to reload everything as if you never had itunes.
1 make a folder on your drive called itunes.
2 go to the website and get the itune ( click on the download link and when it ask to run or save click save and tell it where to save.
    3. After save is complete click on the install app. it will default to install to you c drive. Change this to your desired drive and folder. (this will install it on that drive and folder.) then you will have to make a shortcut to open Itunes.
4 If you more than one pc configure in the same order and # of drive you will be able to run this drve from any pc.
I do this with alot of programs at work from a 4gb penn drive to get around the firewall and admin rites. (I.T. department)

  • How do I run iTunes off an external hard drive?

I have an 80GB laptop which is getting pretty full, so I've added a 500GB external hard drive with the intention of transferring my music files (amongst other things) to the external drive, freeing up space on the laptop. This has proved (almost) more trouble than it's worth...
Initially I simply copied iTunes over to the external drive using Windows Explorer. Surfing the apple discussions, however, convinced me that I ought to do the "consolidate library" thing as well (which resulted in me duplicating the files on the external drive). Finally sorted that out, deleted the music files on the hard drive, and discovered that my music library was allegedly "empty". Further surfing on apple discussions made me decide to copy the various iTunes library files from the main iTunes folder back to the hard drive. This has resulted in iTunes being unable to open, due to an "unknown error".
I'm ready to give up! Anyone out there successfully running iTunes off their external drive? How do you do it?

Follow up: My next move was to copy my iTunes folder back onto the hard drive. I had only been doing this for ten minutes (the process took twelve hours the previous time I did it) when iTunes was up and running again, and indeed "seeing" all my music files on the external drive. I cancelled the copy process, deleted all the newly copied iTunes music files from the hard drive, leaving all other files intact, and everything seems fine. The problem is now solved, but I'd nevertheless be grateful if someone could explain to me what was going on!
    Thanks
    Ian
