Running Quicktime in Windows Vista

I have a four year old laptop with Windows Vista as the operating system. Since joining the support communities in August 2010, after buying the Ipod, I have never been able to view the support videos or run Quicktime without  "run as administrator" being checked.
Something has changed. I can now run Quicktime or view the videos without any "Run as Administrator".
This could be a result of:-
EITHER Apple has issued an update to Quicktime - there was no definite indication of this
OR it could be the result of a reputable disk optimizer which I have installed to clean up all the "junk" on the hard disk.
I have never seen a solution to this problem - the main reason for viewing the discussions. It has been discussed many times and it has always been left as open problem.
It suggests that the problem is registry related, i.e. it is related to a registry error. I can't pinpoint which registry it was as there were so many errors detected.
Has anyone else seen this change, without having to optimise the disk?
Laptop, Toshiba, Windows Vista Home Premium, IE9, Ram 2GB.

Thanks for your reply. We have not been in a discussion before. I first posted the problem in August 2010 and received no response, other than someone telling me to repost to the correct place!
I watched a discussion of yours on this subject from around 25-10-2010, and stayed in the background.
I had many years at work interfacing with industrial microprocessors, and learned to "sniff" out problems from the early 1980s. Before that it was "simple" logic and analogue circuits. Most problems were nothing to do with the micro - or electronics - at all, but it always took the blame. Dealing in depth with personal computers is a different and more difficult approach.
The System Optimizer I am using is Norton Utilities 2011, so it's not just a "disk optimizer" even if it optimises information stored on the disk. The are no secrets these days, as there are other products available which will achieve the same results. The software may help to prolong the useful life of the laptop for another 2 years or so. It's cheaper option than buying a new laptop. The biggest improvement made was by increasing the RAM to the maximum which this machine can handle at 2GB.
I was never happy with the "run as adminstrator" situation, but now that ASC is a https site then things are more secure.
It's never clear exactly what a registry cleaner does, but it presumably works down a chain of commands until it reaches a dead end.
The next step will be to see what the current parameters of  HKEY_CURRENT_USER......QUICKTIME PLAYER are set at and possibly revert to the old setting to see what has changed - possibly a risky procedure.

  • Are there any issues regarding running Labview on Windows Vista

I am a cognitive psychology graduate student, and I am considering switching to LabView to display stimuli and gather RT data. I have previously used E-Prime for this task, but E-Prime doesn't seem to run well with Windows Vista. Are there any known issues regarding running LabView with Windows Vista?
    Thanks
    Chris

I've had no problems on Vista*. Only issue I've had was concerning how Vista uses fonts, but if you start on Vista and don't switch between XP and Vista, etc., then you'll be OK.
*no problems with LabVIEW's compatibility with Vista. Now, Vista in general, that's another story and not for this thread/forum.

  • HowTo: iTunes+Quicktime on Windows Vista x86

This was fun. Some of you may have noticed that the iTunes + Quicktime installer may not work on Windows Vista Beta 2 (x86). Well, there's an easy work around:
Install Quicktime 7 Standalone first, then install iTunes.
    Problem solved -- iPod works.
    'Nuff said.

  • TS1717 I have been running Itunes on windows vista and recently loaded Itunes on my Lap top which runs on Windows 7.  When I try to play my music the Lap top only play sample music.  Any suggestions?

I have a desk top which has Windows Vista.  On this computer I have been running Itunes for a long time.  My new computer is a Lap top and it runs Windows 7.
I recently loaded Itune on the new computer. I attemted to use Easy Transfer to transfer my Music but was unable to connected the two computers so I transferred my music to a external hard drive and loaded the music on the new computer.  I have the folders and files carefully and they appear to match.  When I try to run Itunes on the new computer I am unable to access the new music.  Itune always goes to the sample music.  The only difference I can come up with is Windows Vista and Windows 7.  Does anyone have any suggestions?

    Hi,
Are you trying to use the Help -> Updates method?
Both those patches need to be manually applied to PSE 9.

  • Berkeley DB XML running on a Windows Vista Home Premium AMD 64 system

    Hello everybody,
following up on [a previous thread|http://forums.oracle.com/forums/message.jspa?messageID=3288630#3288630], the problem I have with Vista 64-bit seems to be more basic. If I download and install BDB XML 2.4.16 not even the command line tool works. It just shows the following error:
    Joined existing environment
\dbxml\bin\dbxml: error at lowest level:Also trying to open any collection in Java using the provided examples fails upon creating a new XmlManager with the following output:
    com.sleepycat.dbxml.XmlException: Uncaught exception from C++ API, errcode = INTERNAL_ERROR
         at com.sleepycat.dbxml.dbxml_javaJNI.new_XmlManager(Native Method)
at com.sleepycat.dbxml.XmlManager.<init>(XmlManager.java:56)I have tried everything I can think of, installing BDB XML in the userspace, giving Administrator privileges, running in XP compatibility mode, to no avail. In the other thread the suggestion was to install a C++ compiler and try to build BDB XML from source, but I don't really have the time. Right now I am back to my old hardware to fix an urgent problem.
Has somebody successfully been able to run BDB XML on Windows Vista 64-bit, even AMD preferrably? If so, did you encounter similar problems?
What could be the reason for this "internal error"?
    Kind regards
    Jörn

I'm still having similar issues running DBXML 2.4.16 under Windows Vista 32 bits (Intel processor), after compiling the binaries myself.
I was using 2.3.10 until recently and everything worked fine. I decided to upgrade to be able to use XQuery Update, but I've encountered the error described in this thread, so I decided to compile it myself, following your recommendations. It worked almost fine, but I cannot connect from two different sources at the same time. For instance, if I open a connection via the Java driver (using Tomcat for instance), and then try to join the same environment using dbxml (for instance, typing dbxml in the folder that has the containers opened by Tomcat), it blocks for about 20 seconds and then says "unable to join the environment". The exact same configuration worked just fine when I had DBXML 2.3.10; using Windows XP, the precompiled binaries for 2.4.16 also work correctly, but 2.4.16 and Windows Vista don't seem to go very well together.
On a related note, I was having a very similar problem when using Tomcat and (incorrectly) loading the db.jar and dbxml.jar libraries from two different sources (instead of putting it in the Tomcat commons folder): after some seconds trying to connect, the second connection would fail with a DatabaseException (stack trace below). The problem is, under the exact same circumstances, the precompiled 2.4.16 binaries under Windows XP fail with the error 'libdb_java46.dll already loaded in another classloader' (which is covered in another thread). For that reason, I had discarded this possibility under Windows Vista. Since I couldn't find much information my exception anyway, I'm posting it here in the hopes that someone might be able to help me, or that they'll find this thread should they have the same problem.

  • ISight to run in MSN (Windows Vista Business via Parallels)

    Hi guys !
I'm a MAC newbee and as I need to run some Windows applications I have installed Windows Vista Business via Parallels.
Everything works just fine - except for the iSight web-cam when running MSN. I have installed the AppleiSight drivers from the Leopard DVD into the Windows Vista and I did get it running once. But since then the iSight won't start if running MSN. The iSight works perfectly in PhotoBoot, iChat and so on, so there's no problem with the actual HW.
If I try ro re-install the drivers it seems they're already installed, still my MSN doesn't find any cam connected.
I read somewhere that I might need to make the iSight camera "available" to Windows, but I haven't been able to figure out where that might be - if that is really the case... ??!! So if anyone can point me in the right direction here it would be just awesome...
    THANKS !!!

I am having trouble getting the isight to work with aMSN messenger. When the video comes up, I can see myself in the screen viewing box, but the person I am messaging cannot. I am aware that MSN is a microsoft program and therefore might not work with apple. aMSN says that my isight is firewalled or blocked by a router and that I need port forwarding. I was wondering if there is any way around this or if anyone knows the numbers involved for the port forwarding?
"If you are unable to view a webcam in aMSN after a contact has send you an invite, or after you have issued the command to receive/send webcam, and you are behind a router, you may need to follow these steps:
If you receive: IP-Restrict-NAT and you receive false in webcam wizard, that means your connection is firewalled. (does not send the IP)
If this is the case, you will need to open some ports for the webcam to use because they are currently blocked.
To do this, open your router web-based configuration (check router manual for details on this). Once you have the web-based configuration open, browse for a setting called "port forwarding" or "port range forwarding" or something similar to that. (This might be found under the advanced features for your router).
Now that you have the port forwarding page open, you will want to set the port forwarding range so that aMSN will be able to accept and send the webcam stream.
Here's an example of how you will set up your port forwarding:
    Application: aMSN
    Start: 6890
    End: 6900
    Protocol: Both(TCP & UDP)
    IP: xxx.xxx.x.xxx
    Enabled: X (Yes/True)
Note: xxx.xxx.x.xxx is the IP of your machine that you are trying to send / receive webcam
If you have a web server open on your port 80, you can try to disable it too, sometimes it helps."

  • Compatibility of Quicktime and Windows Vista 64 Bit Version

I am currently using Win Vista Home Premium 32 bit. However, I'd like to try the 64 bit version (which I have).
I see the latest version of Itunes is compatible with Windows Vista 64 bit versions. However, that does not appear to be the case with Quicktime. Can anyone confirm this?
If Quicktime is not compatible with Vista 64 bit, is the so called Quicktime Alternative a viable solution?

  • Issues with old version of Quicktime and Windows Vista

I have recently upgraded a PC of mine to Vista. In doing so, I seem to have issues installing an old application that used Quicktime 1.6 (yes, 1.6, you read that right). It is an old piano teaching application called Piano Discovery) that uses QT1.6 to play video and audio files as part of the instructional process. It was originally written to run on Windows 3.1. The problem is that sometimes it will install in Vista and sometimes it will not. It seems that if a fresh clean install of vista is done, and the program is installed immediately thereafter, before any updates from microsoft, it works. But not always. When it does not work, trying to install QT1.6 as part of the program installation results in the following error:
QTINSTAL caused a general Protection Fault in module QT16INST.EXE at 0002:5DA9
The installation then fails. Now you are all probably wondering why I don't use a newer version of Quicktime. Tried that. Won't work, unless there's something I need to do to quicktime settings to make it look like the older version so the piano software will recognize it and use it.
I realize I may be SOL here, but thought I would post in hopes that someone might have a solution. Thanks.

Ok, so you need to install this on multiple systems and need to determine what steps work and which ones don't as the variables that you can discern don't seem to play a role... repeating what appear to you to be the same steps on two different systems yields two different results. And, if this is a classroom setting, you don't want to have to depend on virtualization because the important thing is that the app is simple to access. I'd also guess that there's some other reason for the push to Vista or you'd have stayed with what works (I've worked in situations where, for whatever reasons, decisions are made and you just have to work with what you're dealt!)
I'd think you're correct in that there's probably not a provision for the latest QuickTime to behave like the older version as large portions of the API has been rewritten over the years.

  • QuickTime for Windows Vista

I have uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes w/Quicktime, and I keep getting error message 2093, which tells me to make sure QuickTime is installed properly. The help desk has not been able to help me. Does anyone have a solution?

There are no public beta versions of QuickTime of any flavor. If or when there will be, or when a Vista-compatible version of QuickTime will appear, no one here knows or can say.

  • No video in quicktime with windows vista

so im told i have to buy quicktime pro, so i do. now it won't even play anything to convert it to anything to play on.. well anything.

  • How to uninstall Quicktime in Windows Vista

I am using the Uninstall and am logged in as admin, but keep getting message that need to be logged in as admin.

If you are also an administrator on your account click the drop down box on the recovery menu where it says 'administrator' and see if your account is listed. If it's the only account listed have you tried entering no password?
If that fails then google for 'hirens boot cd' which has a reset tool for Vista on the CD.

  • Raw converter stopped working and is missing -- running CC and Windows Vista SP 2.

I have reinstalled Photoshop twice from the cloud.  RAW converter still missing.  Please help.
If I try to install the 7.1 Converter download, I get a failed message saying this update is not for me.  The 8.3 DNG converter installed, but the problem persists.

ACR 8.3 is what you want, that is the current version for Photoshop CC. You can check the installed ACR version in Help > About Plug-In > Camera Raw (or open the CC desktop app and see if it reports Photoshop as up to date).
You don't have any need for the DNG converter, since you have Photoshop CC and thus the very latest ACR version with all the newest camera support.
(The DNG converter is a standalone application, completely independent from Photoshop. It converts native camera files to the universal DNG format, so that they can be read by older ACR versions that don't have direct native support for that camera).
If ACR 8.3 is indeed installed, but not working as it should, or even missing, that's a different problem.
