Running RDS on Server 2008r2 - connection drops suddenly and completely

We have about 50 RDS servers running on Windows 2008r2.  These are all virtual machines running within VMWare ESXi 5.5. Some are configured in a farm and others are "stand-alone".  All are in a single domain environment and we have no
issues logging in and working.  BUT, at random times, users will "lose" their sessions.  Not the normal "session has disconnected, we will try to connect x number of times" that you see if there is a connectivity problem. 
When the connection/session is "lost" the RDP client just closes immediately.  Clients PCs are running on a mix of XP and Windows 7.  Does not seem to be any rhyme or reason on which machines or users this happens to.  Have found nothing
relative in the server or client logs.  It's not a keep-alive issue, you can be actively typing when this occurs.  Some times we can go for a day or two with no disconnects and sometimes some users will be disconnected 8-10 times a day.  
This seems to happen at random - one user may be disconnected one time and everyone else is fine.  The next time it may be 10 sessions.  Haven't been able to tie it to a single farm, group of servers, group of users, time of day, or group of PCs.

After referring to your comment, it seems that your user may be limited in number of users who connect simultaneously to RD session. Limited number of RDP connections can be due to misconfigured Group Policy or RDP-Tcp properties in Remote Desktop Services
Configuration, by default, the connection is configured to allow an unlimited number of sessions to connect to the server.
You can verify “Limit number of connections" Gpo Policy by below mention path.
Local Computer Policy > Computer Configuration>Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Remote Desktop Services> Remote Desktop Session Host> Connections "Limit number of connections"
You can also verify under RDP-Tcp properties. For more information you can refer below article for further troubleshooting.

  • USB connection dropping suddenly

    I'm using my phone as usb modem to access internet via ovi suite. I do have a solid cable connection too but I swapped over to 3G because I noticed that it's more reliable and faster than wired connection. (Because our service provider is an **bleep** and doesnt want to fix the problem)
    Normally a drop in connection wouldnt matter, but because I play fast paced online games, connection drops are fatal.
    I was fine for quite a while but ever since last weekend I've been having problems with the connection dropping, usually I was able to fix this with either restarting my PC or phone.
    I read that this might be cause of some usb drivers in windows from some older thread, but I doubt I could use the same drivers for my N8.
    Anyway, my phone is N8 and I'm using the cable that came with it. And my machine runs Windows 7.

  • Web part created on a subsite for a sharepoint list in another site using sharepoint designer, to show only the subsite's reports. Connection dropping off and showing all the reports

    I crated web parts in the sub-sites (we have about 10 subsites) using sharepoint designer from a main list in another site.  Then used web part to show only the  ubsite's reports - using connection to the main list.  Problem is, the connection
    is dropping off and showing all the reports on the main list that are confidential.  this has happened 3 time lately.  Could someone explain why it happens some times?  I had to fix it by adding the web part again and connecting it

    If you want to use a top level site "department" list column in all sub-sites, you can go to top level site and create a
    lookup type "Site column" to look up the value from the department list, then all sub-sites can use this lookup type site column created in top level site.

    When in googlemail inbox, Firefox constantly keeps dropping out and reconnecting,(as seen in the tab) and often crashes when one is writing or sending a message.

    Try to start Firefox with the about:blank page by creating a copy of the current Firefox desktop shortcut and add a space and <b>-url "about:blank"</b> to the target field.
    Try to delete the sessionstore.js file in the Firefox profile folder to prevent restoring the crashed session.

    New Airport Extreme, works great with Windows XP machine ethernetted into it, and also with a MacBook with wireless-N.
    But my brand new Lenovo T60P with wireless-N is flakey with the Airport. It connects fine with a 100% signal, using the WPA2-PSK / AES setting on the Lenovo (WPA2 Personal security in 802.11n b/g compatibility mode on the Airport). Most of the time it works quite well.
    But very frequently (every five minutes?) one of two things will happen: with the signal still registering fine in the taskbar (and in the laptop's wireless "status" utility), it will become unable to locate any website, including google.com, etc., and refreshes of currently-displayed websites yield server timeouts. The browser (firefox) gives a DNS timeout message. The second thing is just your basic dropped wireless connection. It will reconnect by itself after a while.
    Any advice is hugely appreciated. It ***** to "upgrade" to headaches! (Ha! the forum software doesn't like a synonym for "vaccuums". Apologies to the nuns at Apple for my potty mouth.)

    What you experienced is not a surprise as 802.11n is not a standard yet and each manufacturer has developed it own "pre-n" version. Right now Apple (base station) will work with Apple (notebooks), Dlink (routers) will work with Dlink (PCMCIA cards), etc.
    Lenovo is no different. You can expect 80-90% compatibility, but not 100%. To expect cross-vendor 100% compatibility, you will likely have to wait until 802.11n is "approved" and then the firmware is updated on all devices.

    How is the iPhone connecting to the Internet? Try testing over a local Wi-Fi network that the Exchange server is running on.
    Also, you can try emailing the iPhone a configuration profile with security certificates. The iPhone Enterprise support has a configuration utility and a Deployment Guide which will help you verify configuration settings.

    In my company, I use VS 2008 and SQLServer 2008R2, and I have rptproj projects in VS 2008.
    The rptproj project has several rdl files.
    I would like use VS 2010 or VS 2012 with SSRS and SQLServer 2008R2.
    SSDT, which was introduced with SQL Server 2012. I suggest not possible migration rpt projects in VS 2008 to VS 2010 / VS 2012
    Any alternative solution to do it ?

    You can now use Visual Studio 2010 to edit .rtproj report projects and .rdl reports.
    You need VS10 SP1, then install the Data Tools for VS10, followed by the installation of SQL Server Express 2012 with Reporting Services and Data Tools.

  • Verizon DSL connection drops over and over again

    My DSL connection constantly drops and reconnects. It started over a week ago and has gotten worse. Today it in unbearable. The drops are random, sometimes I can stay connected for 30 minutes before it drops, othertimes I'm connected for less than 5 minutes before it goes out. I'm not talking about lost connection from a wireless device to the modem. The DSL and Internet lines go out and I lose my connection completely, for a few minutes while it reconnects. I've seen several people on this forum and others talk about the same issues. Is there any way that I can fix this or help diagnose the problem?
    I've tried the normal stuff: restarted the computer, unplugging the modem for 30 seconds, checking the cables, I even replaced the phone line from the wall to the modem.
    I have a Westell D90-327w15-06 reg. G modem/router.
    Any information will be greatly appriciated.

    Contact tech support and try to get them to run a noise margin test on your line. Most dropped DSL connections are caused by a marginal connection to the central station. I don't know what speed your line is provisioned for but in the case of a distance problem to the central station provisioning the line to a lower speed will provide a more reliable connection.   • Ethernet connection drops in and out

    Please help me out, I am running an iMac 27 in, mid 2011. It was updated to Mavericks and from what I understand there were not connectivity issues at that time. Now I am having issues with randomly losing connection to my supervisor's computer, the external drives on the network and the internet all at the same time. I can usually immediately reconnect to my supervisor's computer, but my adobe programs, usually indesign, still crash because the "file was lost" or something to that effect. It is also causing some pretty big issues with updating DPS files. I spent an extremely unproductive afternoon with adobe support and some subsequent troubleshooting on my own pointed to the iMac or connectionbeing the issue. We have checked the ethernet jack, and it is not the issue. I would also like to mention that I am connected through an ethernet cable, that has also been recently replace. Has anyone run into this and been able to fix it? At this point even a temporary fix that I have to perform each morning before I start would be an improvement, and a productive step in the right direction.

    Factory defaults, let it install with cisco connect. I did configure it myself before, but to rule out any and all user error I tried it with the tools Cisco shipped the router with. Even before installing the router with cisco dconnect, so with PURE factory defaults, it only delivered 65mb/s over 2.4ghz N
    Again, there can't be any missconfiguration if nothing is configured. I took the liberty to google some more about this router, and it seems there are a lot of people reporting bad range/speed.
    I'm just going to RMA this and see if a new one will do better.

  • LAN connection dropping in and out

    I have a 2002 model linksys BEFW11S4 wireless router. Still works great and use it everyday. This has been going on for a while now but about every half hour or so I lose my LAN connection for about 1 second and then starts going again. Just wondering if anyone knows a fix for this problem and what might be causing it. Thanks for any tips.

    The first step that you try is that , Connect Modem-> PC (Without router). And see if the connection Stays stable .
    If yes, then you can try to upgrade the firmware of the router.

  • Server 2008r2 and windows 7 pro slow to no networkshare file searching and file access (green progress bar)

    we are running a windows server 2008r2 sp1 domain controller and a 3com gigabit switch to which 7 windows 7 pro computers are connected. We are only using the windows server to distribute a few printers and as a network share (z drive).
    we are storing all files (word documents only) centrally on the server (z share), and files are accessed and written to the z share.
    Problem is that file access from the z share on the windows 7 client computers is at best buggy. we are able to browse the z-share, but as soon as we want to search the z-share for files (f.i. use file explorer with "content: memorandum") the green
    progress bar shows and no search is performed. something like alphabetically sorting a directory on map/file name on the z-share also shows a green bar with no sorting. manually going to the files works.
    One thing i noticed, sometimes not all files that one user created and stored on the server is visible and can be found by another user. I prefer to disable all offline file caching setting, because that feature is not used. no files should be made accessible
    offline. i don't know where to change that on the server side. 
    I am reluctant to experiment on the server end (2008r2 sp1), so i tried a few suggested solutions on the client end (windows 7 client)
    I tried disabling offline file caching
    i tried properties (z share) ==> advanced and map optimizing and several options there
    i tried disabling the smbv2 protocol and disabling the smbv1 protocol (using
    sc.exe config lanmanworkstation depend= bowser/mrxsmb10/nsi command etc. posted by microsoft)
    i tried disabling windows defender
    i tried accessing the z share via ip and server name (the share is mapped via its servername, e.g. dennis-dc1\share). still the same
    file searching on the clients c drive ('own harddrive') works much better, file searching on the server also works.
    any suggestions or solutions that i can test on the client side, as mentioned i am reluctant to change something on the server side. if a solutions works, i prefer to change it on the server side.

    The issue could be due to windows indexing service taking long time in sorting and searching in mapped drives. Please try the steps belwo to disable windows indexing service or search service on the windows 7 client to resolve the issue.
    You can click on Start and select Control Panel, click on
    Programs and Features, go into the Turn Windows Features on or off section Scroll down the list and uncheck the box next to Indexing Service or Windows Search.

  • Broadband Dropping Out and Connection Speed Decrea...

    Sorry to be a pain but I am back here again.
    Since the last issue with speed, connection drop out and noisey line which required an underground cable to be partly replaced, all has been fantastic and no problem to report. Many thanks to those who were involved in helping with getting that issue resolved.
    About 10 days ago the broadband started to drop out at random times but not too often. The broadband hub light would go out for about 15 seconds before returning. My connection would automatically resume and no great problem. It has since become more of a problem and pain.
    The frequency of drop out increased with a sort of pattern. Last week an example would be drop out at 11:50 am, again at 12:40 and once more at 1:30 pm. Each time the connection returned my computer icon for wifi would be a warning triangle. I clicked on the icon and would get a message 'limited connection'. The only way I could connect again would be to click the icon and select to disconnect and then connect, making sure a 'tick' was in the box for autoconnection. A bit more of a pain than before but usable. It got more of a problem over the next few days.
    The frequency of drop out increased. This became a right pain when trying to purchase things online as I could not be sure in the purchase had been completed or if I tried again would I get two lots? Upon broadband connection returning I would not be able to 'auto connect' but would get the warning triangle of 'limited connection'. I tried the click to disconnect and reconnect but it failed to work. I ended up shutting down the laptop, waiting before powering up. This failed to work as all I would get is the warning triangle and 'limited connection'. The only way I could reconnect was to press the 'restart' button. This worked but it got worse.
    The next day the broadband connection would drop out every couple of hours. It got to the point that even pressing the 'restart' button would not allow me to connect. I tried three times and gave up. I had to resort to pressing the very small 'reset' button on the back. This cured the problem for about 12 hours before the drop outs started again.
    It is now a case of 50/50 if I can connect to the broadband again after a drop out. It is getting quite frustrating. I only used the small 'reset' as a last resort. I have noticed that the speed of the connection has started to drop down also.
    Each time the hub drops broadband and I can auto connect and do not press any hub button, the timer has reset to zero days and zero hours. I know it takes about a week for the connection to settle. I do wonder if these drop outs are messing the connection settings for my line speed? The line used to be rated at 21 Mbps but has decreased to 17 Mbps, my actual connection used to be 19 Mbps but struggles to reach 14 Mbps. It is slowly dropping with each and every drop out.
    I also looked at the event log in the hub. Just before each broadband drop out I see a external connection is made with the initials 'CWMP' followed by 'event code 1 boot' or 'event code 6 connection request' or 'event code 4 value change'. Straight after the broadband connection drops out with out fail.
    All I can seem to find out is that the external connection is either the hub connecting to the server or vice versa? As for the codes? I have no idea at all.
    I only ever resort to pressing 'restart' if I cannot connect to my hub. I have only pressed the 'reset' as a last resort as nothing else worked to allow me to reconnect.
    Can anyone offer any help or best a permanent fix?

    I connected to the test socket and used a wired connection for the speed test and hub stats.
    The hub position and run of cables are the same as when the last engineer advised as the best set up.
    Since my last post I have checked the event log and 'CWMP' has made at least two remote connections but the hub did not drop broadband connection. The broadband has been stable but just slower than usual, as you stated due to the drop outs/disconnections.
    I guess a case of wait and monitor to see if the problem has resolved itself?
    Will the speed automatically return to the usual 18 to 19 Mbps? or will something else have to be done to reset it at the exchange/server?

  • DFS on Windows Storage Server 2008R2 Essentials

    I have a small NAS-type device running Windows Storage Server 2008R2 in place at a remote site for a client.  This was put in place to replace a failing 2003 domain controller (not my choice for replacement, client did it for cost reasons) that is still
    in place as of this writing.  This is my first time working on a WSS machine (and hopefully my last).  DFS replication between the two sites is crucial.  Main site has a 2008R2 Standard DC.  
    I enabled, via PS commands, DFS on the WSS remote site machine.  I have DFS replication working from the main site
    to the WSS box, but it
    won't replicate from the WSS box to the main site DC or the still existing 2003 remote site machine.  Any dfsrdiag commands I try to run on the WSS box fail, such as:
    C:\>dfsrdiag backlog /rgname:tcdata /rfname:tcdata /sendingmember:ip-dc2
    [ERROR] Cannot find DfsrReplicatedFolderConfig object. Possible reasons:
    + The replicated folder is not configured on the member
    + Access is denied to its configuration information
    [ERROR] Replicated folder <tcdata> not found. Err: -2147217406 (0x80041002)
    Operation Failed
    I suspect these commands are failing because the WSS box isn't (can't be) a domain controller, but I've no basis for this reasoning.  Is this the case?  I've torn down and recreated the memberships and connections on the WSS box a couple
    times to no avail.  Running a "Verify Topology" on the WSS box results in "The topology for replication group TCDATA is fully connected.  Data can replicate throughout the topology."  A propagation report with the WSS box
    as the source results in "Arriving Pending".
    I'm actually unsure how to troubleshoot this.  Can anyone offer advice other than "don't use WSS"?

    It appeared that the configure file was invalid or corrupted. Please try to recreate the replication group to see if it can resolve the issue.
