Running really s l o o o o w ...esp. MS Office apps
My machine runs pretty darn slow, esp. if I run, say, Word & Excel and Firefox, iChat and a few other small apps. I will say this, I'm running with only the 512Ram it came with and it's a 2Ghz machine. I know RAM can be a factor here. I know Office is still Rosetta, but this is painful, waaay too many spinning colored balls.
BUT...I had two crashes early on that required a complete reinstall of the OS. Each reinstall I didn't completely wipe it clean and left the previous install in (or whatever they call that...you have the old ID on the drive as "previous..." and after the reinstall a lot of settings are still there, etc.) Lastly, I have an 80G HD, with about 40 used, so it shouldn't be the drive.
Questions are:
- Should I just do a complete clean reinstall?
- Is it just a more RAM sitch?
- Should the machine go back to Apple or the Genius Bar or call AppleCare about it. This is the first time I've had AppleCare and don't feel like running to them everytime the machine sneezes.
B&W G3, 2Ghz G5, MacBook Pro, lots of boxes with wires and lights and things Mac OS X (10.4.8) used PCs plenty...but born & raised on a mac....
yes, ram will make a big difference, I run office 2004 on my macbook and it runs fine - with 2 gig of ram.(never get spinning beach ball)
rosetta apps, by nature, will run slower than native apps.
max out your ram, you will not regret it. 512 is just enough to run the OS.
this is the ram I bought - lifetime warranty: (read the reviews)

10.6.8 running really slowly and failed to start up 4 times
Hello,
My MacBook Pro (which is about 4 years old) wouldn't start up 4 times, I just got the blue screen with the apple and nothing. Had to turn off. Eventually it started and now its running REALLY slowly.
Any thoughts would be most helpful to get it running more quickly!!
I ran Etrecheck and this is what came up:
Problem description:
Computer is running super slow, and has failed to turn on several times in the past week.

Mid 2009 MacBook Pro - Running really slow.
Hi,
I'm having problems with my mid 2009 MBP running really slowly. The problem seems to be the mds_stores Process using lots of CPU and memory. I have done the following to try and resolve it:
Uninstalled AV software (Avast)
Created new admin user and logged in with that accounts - it seem to run fine when logged in with that user!
Tried to re-index HD by adding and removing from Privacy section in Spotlight. Not sure if this actually worked
Removed a couple of other apps, e.g. Dropbox.
Updated to latest version of Yosemite (10.10.1)
Any help gratefully received!

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
syslog -F '$Time $Message' -k Sender mdworker -o -k Message Rne Norm -k Sender mds | tail | pbcopy
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing the key combination command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear.
The output of the command will be automatically copied to the Clipboard. If the command produced no output, the Clipboard will be empty. Paste into a reply to this message.
The Terminal window doesn't show the output. Please don't copy anything from there.
If any personal information appears in the output, anonymize before posting, but don’t remove the context.
Step 2
Enter the following command as in Step 1 and post the output:
mdutil -as 2>&- | pbcopy
You can then quit Terminal.
Step 3
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Terminal. In the Console window, look under the heading DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION on the left for crash reports related to Spotlight. If you don't see that heading, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar. A Spotlight crash report has a name beginning in "mds" or "mdworker" and ending in ".crash". Select the most recent such report, if any, from the System and User subcategories and post the entire contents—the text, please, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post any other kind of diagnostic report, such as hang logs—they're very long and not helpful. -
Need help. I am running a 27 in imac with 16 gigs of ram. Photoshop runs really fast, except when opening files. It takes 5-10 minutes to open even a small file of 1 meg. I cleaned and validated all the fonts and removed all questionable fonts. Reset preferences and still have problem. Slow to open and in force quit "Photoshop not responding" At this point should I uninstall and start over.
What are the performance Preferences?

My Macbook Pro is running really slow and programs keep crashing
I have a 15" MacBook Pro (Mid 2010 Model) that is doing my head in, as it runs really slow most of the times as soon as I open more than one program (especially if I use Excel or Word of course). I ran the EtreCheck and the result is below, hopefully this will help some of you guide me in the right direction?
Most of my memory (over 200GB) is used up by "OTHER", any idea what that could be and how I could easily free up space?
Thanks a lot

Apr 14, 2015, 07:13:57 PM /Users/[redacted]/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/Last.fm Scrobbler_2015-04-14-191357_[redacted].crashLaunch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter the name of the crashed application or process. For example, if Safari crashed, you would enter "Safari" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
Step 2
In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ User Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of crash reports. The name of each report starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report related to the process in question. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.
When you post the log extract or the crash report, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the text on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created. -
Help!!!!! I need to get iphoto lib off of hd which is running really slowly, and clicks rather more loudly than usual, how do i do this, im even on my iphone asking this! Computer also runs inly marginally faster in safe boot mode! Could the apple store help?
It certainly sounds like your harddrive is dying. I would Immediately backup your harddrive to an external USB or Firewire harddrive Before doing anything else. It just may save your data in time before you lose it all.
Hope this helps -
My fan is running really loud, low cpu (i think?)
My fan has been running really loudly for a day now. I have tried turning it off and on again, putting it to sleep, cleaning out the dust.
On my activity monitor "opendirectoryd" is running at 94.5 percent and I have no idea what that is and if it is causing the problem?
I have looked at answers on other forums for the same thing but none of the remedies have seemed to work. Can any one help please?
I also put in some code that was on a different forum into 'terminal' but have no idea what the results mean. I have copied it below:

SQL Query running really slow, any help in improving will be Great!
Hi,
I am really new to this performance tuning and optimization techniques. Explain plan also, I only have theoretical knowledge, no clues on how to find out the real issue which is making the query slow..So if anyone can give me a good direction on where to start even, it will be great..
Now, my issue is, I have a query which runs really really slow. If I run this query for a small subset of data, it runs fast(Its flying, actually..) but if I give the same query for everything(Full required data), its running for ages..(Actually it is running for 2 days now and still running.)
I am pasting my query here, the output shows that the query stucks after "Table created"
SQL> @routinginfo
Table dropped.
Table created.
Please please help!
I also ran explain plan for this query and there are a number of rows in the plan_table now..
SORRY!IS there a way to insert a file here, as I want to attach my explain plan also?
My query -Routinginfo.sql

My macbook pro is running really slow, is it the memory?
I'm using a Mac OS X, version 10.7.5, and my storage has 277 gb free left out of 500gb. What should i do to make my macbook run faster? It's running really slow, (even my itunes lags when playing a song). Please help, thank you!
You could try permission repair.
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1452
You could also try PRAM reset
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
If those two don't work go to Apps>Utilites>Activity Monitor and look at your processes. At the top click where it says my processes and change it to All Processes. Look and see if there is anything that is eating up an abnormal amount of memory. -
My 17 inch mac book pro is running really slow
Since upgrading to mavericks my 2010 17 inch macbook pro is running really slow. I'm thinking of completely rebuilding my machine and using an old OS. Is this the best solution? Or should I rebuild with mavericks first?
My mac spec is 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7 with 8GB 1067 Mhz DDR3The only thing that you can do from a mechanical prospective is install a faster HDD, either a SSHD or a SSD. A 17" 201 MBP will not accept more than 8 GB RAM.
Though Snow Leopard is the most efficient OSX from Apple to date, your MBP should run Mavericks without difficulty. You might have some third party software that could be your problem. Noted culprits are AV and so called 'cleaning' or 'performance' applications. There may be others as well.
If you download and post an EtreCheck report, it may provide some clues:

Photoshop Elements 12 runs really slow and is almost unusable.
Photoshop (and Premiere) Elements 12 runs really slow and is almost unusable.
All other high end software works perfectly including 3D rendering software.
27" iMac mid 2011.
16gb of RAM.
Over 100gb free hdd space.
Radeon HD card 2GB.
3.4 GHz Intel Core i7.
I have tested on tiny low quality images as well.
I bought this with the bundled Premiere Elements which is also unusable even with the smallest and lowest quality video file.
iMovie works fine as does other video editing software. I ONLY have an issue with Photoshop and Premiere Elements 12.
Mavericks 10.9.3
Elements 12.1After the latest update, Firefox is much better. Using it again.

Can someone please help. I have a really old MacBook that is running really slow. I want to wipe everything and reinstall the latest software but don't know how to do this. Also is there a way of keeping Microsoft Office when doing this? Thanks in advance
You do realise that wiping the disk means that everything on the disk is erased. Everything. Photos, music, emails, ...
So the first piece of advice is to make sure you have a back up of everything.
You need the OS disk to reintsall the operating system. You will use that disk first to erase the drive, then to reinstall the OS.
Here's the link for the US. http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
As for MS Office, you will need the original disk that it came on to reinstall it. -
My ipad is running really slow, and it will not let me connect to iTunes or App Store, but have another iPad in house which is working fine I,please help
Try a hard reset by pressing the Home button and Wake / Sleep button at the same time, keep them both pressed until the Apple Logo appears on the screen.
This does not lose any data on your iPad. -
Macbok is running really slow i have rest it back to factory yet its still really slow and creating alot of noise ? i dont know what to do at this momment
How large is your hard drive and how much hard drive space do you have left?
It is very difficult to offer troubleshooting suggestions when the "os version" you are using is unknown as each os has their own troubleshooting solutions.
