Running SAP on Microsoft Virtual Servers

Is anyone running SAP on Microsoft Virtual Servers?  If so, what has been your experience with this?  We are installing NetWeaver 2004s on three virtual servers (running on the same Physical Windows server). We are using the Microsoft Virtual Server software (not VM Ware).
Thanks in advance for any information.

Check Note 674851 - Virtualization on Windows:
VMware, GSX Server, VMware workstation, Microsoft Virtual Server
Due to their restriction to 32-bit, single CPU and host/guest operation, these virtualization products are not suitable for productive SAP applications.
It may be advisable to use one of these products to operate non-production systems (demo systems, test systems, development systems and so on).
I would not use Microsoft Virtual Server for productive installations, additionally, depending on the database used, it may or may not supported by the database vendor and thus also may or may not supported by SAP.
In worst case you will need to reinstall the application on a non-virtualized environment and reproduce a problem there before SAP support will accept the problem.

  • RMI and Microsoft Virtual Machine

    Hi everyone,
I'm currently tring to find a solution for a migration issue to which I'm confronted.
I have several ActiveX components used in a server context to deliver services to a client.
I intend to migrate the whole to Java soon but there's a huge amount of work to do.
I would like to work on this migration progressively. For now, I would like to make a Java Swing Client running in a JRE 1.4 environment. This client is going to connect to a server running in a Microsoft Virtual Machine environment. The client is going to request some stuff to the server and the server is going to obtain the requested info by queryng an ActiveX component (via JActiveX).
The thing is that I need to do this communication with RMI but I wonder wether RMI is supported in Microsoft's Java Virtual Machine, is it ?
What would you suggest me to do ?
    Thanx for any help,
    Diego

I think that IBM's AlphaWorks team has programmed an API to make possible to use Applets that use RMI in InternetExplorer4 interpreted by a Microsoft Virtual Machine. But... is this supposed to allow RMI support only in IE4 or in windows in general ?

  • Novell Netware 4.11 on Microsoft Virtual Pc 2004

    Hello,
I have Novell Netware 4.11 SP9 running in a Microsoft Virtual PC 2004.
I can not get the network card to detect or work. This looks to be the
closest support group in the list that might have an answer.
The Virtual PC creates virtual hardware for the Intel / Dec 21140 network
    card.
I know poeple have got 4.11 SP8a to work in VPC 2004 but I can't seem to
get it to work. Intel suggest I need:
    NBI.NLM v2.25 9/17/98
    MSM.NLM v3.95 5/12/99
    ETHERTSM.NLM v3.8 3/1/99
Which I now have. I have tried numerous Intel and even some old Dec lan
drivers. Here is an example of the error.
    LOAD SYS:SYSTEM\DC21X4.LAN SLOT=3 TX_THRESHOLD=4 RX_BUFFERS=5
    FRAME=ethernet_802.3 NAME=DC21X4_1_E83

    Module DC21X4.LAN NOT loaded
    Any Ideas ?
(I have loaded the nbi, msm and ethertsm files manually but still do not
    get card detection)
    Thanks

I know nothing about VirtualPC and you will find many people here who know
more about VMWare which I could recommend.
Based upon my VMWare experience, make sure the NIC is configured Private/Host
    Only or NAT.
It must be configured to appear directly connected to your LAN.

  • SAP on virtual servers (Hardware requirements)

    Hi Guys.
I would like to setup a Windows desktop server and then using VMWare create several virtual servers, in order to install IDES SAP Solutions over Windows Server 2008 with DB6/SQL Server/Oracle
Let says about 4-5 virtual servers and each one deploy an ECC 6.0 Instance, Netweaver 7, Solution Manager EHP1, CRM, Portal and any of other SAP Solutions with their respective DB.
This is all intended for testing purposes, like installing, upgrading, and testing features
What 64bit processor type, memory, disk, would you recommmend? Im thinking on an Intel i7 cpu, with 8GB Memory, and perhaps 1 TB disk, and so on.
If any of you have experience setting up a virtual lab like this, would be highly appreciated.

  • Running SAP XI in High Availability

    Bonjour a vous tous !
I am looking for best practices when running SAP Exchange Infrastructure (3.0, well it is now XI 7.0 with the new NW2004s – SP9) in High Availability mode.
The customer that I work with does not know yet on which platform its production environment will be (Unix/Oracle vs Microsoft/SqlServer 20005). I know that some hardware vendor has built-in HA capabilities, either Software/Hardware based (MSFT MCS, IBM HACMP, etc).
Should we go for an "SAP XI all-In One" installation or distributed one ?  Should we get one central SLD or one per environment? What is the role of the SLD and Solution Manager? Do they need to be interconnected?
I have worked with other EAI middlewares (Biztralk Server and webMethods) and normally the Integration Engine sit on it's own server and the various adapters are on their respective servers (i.e.: one server for HTTP, one server for FTP, one server for EJB, etc), since the sizing (RAM. Java heap memory, etc) for all theses adapters are different (FTP a lot of small file, EJB not so many request, but they could eat-up a lot of CPU, etc). Is this a best practice that I can apply also with SAP XI ?
Thank in advance for you help !
    A+

    Hi Michel,
Well we seem to work along the same track...
I am working on 2 customers concurrently - the one using like you using PI 7.0. In their case we implemented a Windows solution using W2K3 Enterprise Edition 64-bit. Avoid 32-bit as it will no longer be supported by SAP next year. We are using MSCS (which is part of the Enterprise Edition by default).
The 2nd is a solaris customer (very large) for which we are using a cross-data center solution handled by Veritas Cluster Manager with automatic failover between systems and data centers if required.
    Some answers to your questions:
    1. All-in-one - yes
    2. SLD - one for DEV/QA, and separate for Prod - this is recomended by SAP too - I can mail you a guide if needed
    3. With Solution Manager 4.0, it now supports the J2EE side and hence can understand SLDs. The concept is to setup an HA Solution Manager and deploy the SLD for Prod on the same piece of kit.
    4. SAP do not recomend splitting off the Adapter Engine except for specific cases, the main reason being if you have specific systems behind firewalls that you need to communicate with.
Under no circumstances should you have separate AE's per adapter - this would be an extermely expensive solution hardware and support-wise.

  • Abnormal "% system ASP used" growth when running SAP   after V5R4 upgrade

    Dear friends,
apparently again issues with the V5R4 upgrade. Let me summarize:
upgraded sucessfully from V5R3 to V5R4
    II14126 successfully applied (8 October 2007)
no problems running SAP at all (we run multiple instances with 46C and 47, so kernel 46C 2341 and kernel 640 174)
When the instances are running, we see an abnormal (too fast!) storage consumption, never seen anything similiar before... the journals are ok, we checked them all, also the non-SAP ones...
Any idea/suggestion will be sincerely appreciated.
    Franco.

    Volker,
we went EXT since long ago, we had no issues until we ran V5R3, now we're in V5R4, last apar II14126 as of Oct 8, kernel EXT 2341 on CI and windows application servers and we're definitivelly in troubles !
The strange thing is that we have another identical iSeries, same kernels, same V5R4 tough wih an older ***, no problems on that iSeries.
No useful suggestions from IBM and SAP so far.
IBM asked us to load also the following PTFs :
    SI28671
    MF42522
    SI25219
we did it, no luck, nothing changed... the tempstorage is increasing at an avg speed of 10Gb per hour.
I've found some old threads in the saponiseries group, here a couple of workaround were suggested :
Note 182207 - DB2/390: Improving Virtual Storage Utilization
Note 101717 - Automatic restart of SAP R/3 work processes
    See also http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/SAPoniSeries/message/39
Do you think we can adopt this temporary workaround ?

  • Virtual servers are rebooting automatically

    Hello All,
I am having an issue with Virtual Servers.
I have 5 node cluster. Last week due to storage firmware upgradation we had some problems. after that we contacted storage expert and get it rectified. Now One of cluster node is having a issue. Once i move the VMs (This node is the owner of VMs) then the
virtual servers are automatically rebooting. Now this node is ideal. In addition to that we checked all updates and run the failover test also..every thing is showing green.
Can any one have solution for this, please help me.
    Thank you.
    Karan

    Hi Karan,
Unfortunately, the available information is not enough to have a clear view of the occurred behavior. Could you provide more information about your environment. For example,
the exact text of any error messages that you received that are associated with this problem?
The server version of the problem on, when you experience this issue what are you trying to do, when this problem occurs the system log record information, screenshots is the best information.
The 1146 event just can offer us the cluster fail, but we still need more information, please post your cluster log. You can refer the following article to generate the cluster

  • Hyper V over SMB does not work on non-Microsoft Samba servers

I want to use for Hyper V (2012 R2 Standard) over SMB. I tried to move a virtual machine from local storage over to the SMB share and receive the error: "Remote SMB share does not support resiliency."
I have verified the SMB share is SMB 3.0. According to Microsoft, this should be supported:
"Using Hyper-V with SMB has the following requirements:
One or more computers running Windows Server 2012 R2 or Windows Server 2012 with the Hyper-V role installed. You can also use non-Microsoft file servers that implement the SMB 3.0 protocol."
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/libr ... 34187.aspx
But according to others, this is an ongoing issue with Samba. (http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=119&t=77809)
Microsoft, is this supported or not? If so, what else can I try to get this to work?

I understand Samba will always be in catch-up mode, and I would not blame MSFT for developments within Samba. But, Microsoft does specifically state in their support documents "You can also use non-Microsoft file servers that implement the
    SMB 3.0 protocol."
The fact the the 3.0.x *nix versions may not in fact include the features Microsoft needs means Hyper V is not in fact able to be used as identified. So, Microsoft should not promote this as being a supported feature. They should simply stop after saying "One
or more computers running Windows Server 2012 R2 or Windows Server 2012 with the Hyper-V role installed."
It's not MSFT problem some people understand SMB spec too "freely"... There are some known working SMB3 non-MSFT implementations (EMC, NetApp and maybe Nutanix) and at least few of them are indeed BASED on an open source SAMBA. But these companies
did a huge amount of work to make their fork-outs from SAMBA actually work. Unfortunately nobody bothered to back-contribute their fixes to original code base. Again, it's not MSFT problem.

  • Issue on virtual servers on sun one web server

    Hi all,
I configured sun webserver 6.1 sp8 on windows 2003 server
I configured php, asp, jsp succesfully on different virtual servers.
    as
    www.abc.com:80
    www.php.com:2222
    www.asp.com:3333
    www.jsp.com:4444
    Now the issue is
I want to run the applications by using url with out portno in the browser
    like www.php.com instead of www.php.com:2222
my DNS is aware of the www.abc.com,www.php.com,asp.com,jsp.com
From Internet I can access www.abc.com:80 as www.abc.com becoz it is running on port 80.
If I type www.php.com it is directing to www.abc.com not to www.php.com:2222.
In the host file under windows/system32/drivers/etc I added the following lines
    10.129.149.196 www.abc.com
    10.129.149.196 www.php.com
    10.129.149.196 www.asp.com
    10.129.149.196 www.jsp.com
I want to run the applications without entering portno along with url in the browser.
Can any one help me please.
    Thanks in advance

    Dear M.V,
I choose one server(www.xyz.com) that is running on port 80,in its server.xml I added
    <VS id="https-pqr" connections="ls1" mime="mime1" aclids="acl1" urlhosts="www.pqr.com" state="on">
    <PROPERTY name="docroot" value="D:/Sun/WebServer6.1/docs"/>

    </SEARCH>
    <WEBAPP uri="/" path="D:/Sun/WebServer6.1/https-pqr/webapps/https-pqr" enabled="true"/>
    </VS>
which is of pqr virtual server that is running on port 3333
Now with out port no ie, with www.pqr.com I am able to see the home page of application running on pqr virtual server.
With this configuration I need to check at client environment
If u find mistakes from the above configuration please let me know
    Thanks alot

  • Device Manager in Win: Does Microsoft Virtual WiFi MiniPort Adapter Matter?

I'm a  novice user just wondering about configuring devices in Windows 7 bootcamp partition.
My Apple iMac computer shows as a device in the Windows device manager with a yellow exclamation mark.
The driver is Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter.
The error is "device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)'.
Attempting to troubleshoot, by updating the driver doesn't solve the problem, as Windows can't automatically locate the driver.
However nothing seems to be actually functioning wrong - internet connectivity and wifi connections are stable and the partition is accessible.
I'm also using MacDrive 8 to access my Mac drives from Windows, again this seems to be working smoothly.
Can I just ignore this as one of the quirks of Bootcamp 3.2?
I have my PhD work on the Windows side so just wanting to be sure I can safely ignore the problem.
I've asked this question in the Intel iMac forum, wihtout any luck, just thought other Bootcamp users might be able to shine some light on the issue?
    In detail:
    Bootcamp; 3.2
Win OS: Windows 7 Enterprise 64-bit
    Mac OS: 10.6.7
Computer: Intel Core Duo 3.06GHz 8 GB RAM

  • Archlinux on Microsoft Virtual Server - installs but doesn't boot

    Hi all,
I'm trying to sneak Arch into our organization, but as we're very Windows-focussed it may take some time. I thought I would be able to install it as a virtual machine on our Virtual Server, but I haven't had any luck.
The system seemed to install fine, but when I restart the machine and take out the virtual CD it just sits there with a blank screen, but using 97% CPU.
Here's how I installed the system:
Physical machine: Core II Duo 2GHz running Windows Vista 32-bit, with 2GB memory and a 120GB IDE drive.
    1) Setup a virtual machine - it has 256MB memory, and a 100GB dynamically-expanding IDE virtual hard disk.
    2) Attached the Don't Panic 2007.08 BASE ISO to the Virtual Machine, and started her up.
    3) Started the installer with arch ide-legacy. This is because I've run through this install a few times now and without this option it complains that it can't read from /dev/null a lot and that it has trouble writing to VHD.
    4) Did an auto-prepare and selected all of the defaults to partition the virtual hard disk.
    5) Selected all of the base packages and installed them.
    6) Did the "configure system", and left everything as the defaults except setting the root password.
    7) Installed the kernel, again leaving the defaults in the config file.
    8) Installed the bootloader. Last time I used GRUB, but it sat there saying it was installing for over 2 hours. This time I tried LILO and it installed in less than a few seconds.
After all that was done I exited the installer and did a reboot. Now it sits at 97% CPU usage constantly and shows nothing but a blank screen. Using ALT+F1-F5 shows nothing.
Microsoft Virtual Server has support for the Red Hat and other distributions so I would have expected ArchLinux to work. Has anyone else had success in getting Arch to run on Virtual Server? And is there anything I did wrong in my installation?
    Cheers,
    Paul

Well, according to this virtual pc 2004 supports archlinux 0.7.1 and 0.7.2 .
They claim virtual server 2005 uses the same core as virtual pc 2004 , so it should work.
Try installing with one of the previous isos, see ftp://ftp.archlinux.org/iso .

  • Best practices for setting up virtual servers on Windows Server 2012 R2

I am creating a Web server from scratch with Windows Server 2012 R2. I expect to have a host server, and then 3 virtual servers...one that runs all of the web apps as a web server, another as a Database Server, and then on for session state.  I

use for Web server and Database server.
I have some questions. I am considering using the internal USB with a flash drive to boot the Host off of, and then using two small SSD's in a Raid 0 for the Web server (theory being that if something goes wrong, session state is on a different drive), and
then 2 more for the Database server in a RAID 1 configuration.
please feel free to poke holes in this and tell me of a better way to do it.
I am assuming that having the host running on a slow USB drive that is internal has no effect on the virtual servers after it is booted up, and the virtual servers are booted up?

There are two issues about RAID0:
    1) It's not as fast as people think. So with a general purpose file system like NTFS or ReFS (choice for Windows is limited) you're not going to have any great benefits as there are very low chances whole RAID stripe would be updated @ the same time (I/Os
need to touch all SSDs in a set so 256KB+ in a real life). Web server workload is quite far away from sequential reads or writes so RAID0 is not going to shine here. Log-structures file system (or at least some FS with logging capabilities, think about ZFS
and ZIL enabled) *will* benefit from SSDs in RAID0 properly assigned.
    2) RAID0 is dangerous. One lost SSD would render whole RAID set useless. So unless you build a network RAID1-over-RAID0 (mirror RAID sets between multiple hosts with a virtual SAN like or synchronous replication solutions) - you'll be sitting on a time bomb.
    Not good :)
