Running slow: Finder hogging CPU?
My machine has been running slower with many spinning beach balls even with only a couple apps. open. In Activity Monitor Finder is always in the top 2 of the CPU column. Is this normal or how can I fix?

What % of CPU is Finder using? You might try trashing the file com.apple.finder.plist from the ~/Library/Preferences folder, then rebooting.

Itunes 7.6.2 running really slow and hogging CPU
Hi, every time I use itunes and skip to the next song it will begin to lag and then the color wheel will show. In the activity monitor itunes will use about 100%+ CPU and another process called Kernel_task will go berserk and use 500%. I have about 20,000 songs (150 GB) but this should not be a problem because I am using a Mac Pro 2x2.8 GHZ quad-core with 2 GB of RAM. This issue has only been recent and if anyone knows a solution that would great. thanks. I am also running coversutra and Last.FM if that makes a difference.
I'm also having the same problem. 100% CPU usage, and unresponsive. I thought it was the result of a hard drive migration I just did, but seeing that the same problem has come up for others so recently makes me think it's something else.
Right now I really can't use itunes. Changing songs causes it to hang, as well as any other operation. Was working perfectly yesterday. I really don't get this. I''ve done permission checks, disk checks, uninstalled last.fm...Nothing helps. -
Javaw running SLOW / consuming inordinate CPU time and space
I recently got a new IBM thinkpad and have installed the latest version of Java on it. Applets run fine in the browser, but any Java application I run, for example opening the control panel for java, takes several minutes to open, and while this is happening, my CPU is running the javaw process at 97-100% capacity and consuming about 16-20MB of space.
Running other apps can take 5-10 minutes to launch. Once running, performance is faster, but still intolerably slow.
I have tried downgrading to a previous version of java and find the same performance issue.
Does anyone have any ideas as to what might be causing this performance issue?I have a Thinkpad which is a couple of years old. It runs 1.4 fine.
My OS is win 98, and I had extra memory put in it to bring it up to a massive 98megs of ram.
I think the CPU is something like 4-600mhz. (as I said, ancient).
Something is wrong with your Thinkpad, either hardware, or software configuration.
Oh wait! It's IBM! Of course it is farked!
My story:
13 months after purchase: harddrive completely fails.
IBM's response -> "you had a 12 month warranty only... sux to be you"
(Nb: I don't travel with the laptop... 99.9% of the time it sits there in one place and pretends to be a desktop, it gets considerably less wear and tear than a normal laptop would)
So I replace the harddrive and soldier on.
Eventually I upgrade to the latest version of Netbeans.
Which promptly stops working, and futzes with the OS so that the previous
versions of Netbeans won't work either (oh wait, this rant is supposed to
be about IBM) (point was, I don't have enough ram to run Netbeans, but
every other Java program runs fine - including some which factorise
large near primes.... 60 bits is a challenge, 40 bits is near instantaneous)
Towards the end of last year the side of my laptop screen chipped... and then
the chip became a crack, and now it is a gaping crack. (Before it got too bad)
I took it to an IBM repair place and they said 'oh yes, that's very common'.
Apparently they only reinforce one side of the laptop screen...
The good news is I've upgraded to an eMac, and am currently a happy camper.
Of course, I'm having trouble getting the data off the laptop, because the braindead
version of the windows disk IBM included doesn't let me install new hardware (not
entirely true - I was able to install a USB mouse with it... woohoo.).
I've hooked up a keyboard to the serial port (which was why I needed to move the mouse over to USB)
but... it keeps dropping out because the serial port is loose or badly connected or something.
The one time I tried using a network card in the expansion slot it of course failed to
install properly (see #$%$#^@ windows disk)... after a week of trying different things
it got stuck in the slot, and the slot broke when I pulled it out.
The laptop is nearly completely stuffed, and falling apart...
BUT JAVA STILL RUNS LIKE A GURU ON PRUNE JUICE!!!

Java is in fact the only reason I haven't set up a catapult to send the #$^#%&$ laptop
through the office window of the local head of IBM with a note wrapped around it saying
"warranty this, #@$^$%^head!!!!".

iMac running slow, Finder becomes unresponsive. Over the last 5 years I think I've installed and removed so many programs that I've left OSX a mess. I know enough about computers to confidently make mistakes. The memory and cpu are not maxed out in Activity Monitor, yet I'm getting beach balled.

Safari hogging CPU and won't run
Sorry for posting here, but I couldn't find the Safar for windows section.
I run WinXP (fully up to date), with 2Gb RAM, (with one 1Gb on my gfx card), 1.8Ghz processor
Having updated to the latest Safari I'm finding that it hogs CPU so much so that when I select a page from the top sites screen my PC locks up and I have to use the application manager to kill Safari.
The same thing happens when I try to go to a website just by typing into the address bar.
Anyone having similar issues, or able to help me out as to how to fix it?

Finder running slow with SSD and NAS on Mavericks
I'm having serious slowness issues with the Finder in Mavericks. Initially I thought it was because I upgraded from 10.8 to 10.9, but I'm still having the slow finder issue in a clean install of Mavericks.
I thought this was related to my NAS, but it also seems to be the case with my SSD.
Here is what I've done so far:
- Clean install of Mavericks done.
- Tried the following fix from this site: http://osxdaily.com/2013/11/13/fix-finder-slow-high-cpu-use-mac-os-x/
to rebuild the “com.apple.finder.plist” Finder preference file.
rm ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist&&killall Finder

Here is my systems specs:If the crash started right after you added RAM, it could be a bad Ram dimm. You can try this - change the amount of RAM in Photoshop to 4G, this should stop Photoshop from using the higher ram. If it doesn't crash, it's probably the ram. Or run a diagnostic app. You don't say when it crashes, what you're doing when it crashes - it there a pattern? Did it ever work on this computer? Did it work on your previous computer? Without a lot of data, it could be related to the new computer... What OS version? Did you recently update it? Have you updated Photoshop to the most recent update?
Do you have any plug-ins loaded? Try restarting Photoshop, and immediately press & hold the shfit key to turn off plug-ins. -
i recently upgraded to Lion and i find that my computer is running slow and applications are crashing. For example I have Word 2011 for Mac and it crashes all the time I end up losing my work. It often happens when I'm in class using notebook and when I press record my computer starts thinking and it freezes.
Also, I feel that it overheats often and my battery runs out pretty quickly. I had the macbook (black) and this never happened before. I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong or if there is something with my computer.I bought my computer summer 2010, I don't think this should be happening. Please Help......This is exactly what keeps happening to mine too. I was at a conference taking notes, and I was
using the Notebook template, and doing some audio recording simultaneously. About 3 hours into the conference (not consistently recording, but on and off with the sessions) my file wouldn't save anymore, saying something like "File cannot be modified while in use with another program" and "Invalid file name" when I would go back into my folder to look for it). I tried installing some updates from Microsoft, and when I restarted, I was at least able to open my old notes again, and so far it looks like the audio was working. However, today at the conference, the same thing happened again, but I wasn't actively recording any audio (though after I had copy and pasted my second file of notes into the original, I went back to using it after re-naming it).
Does the crash happen to you under similar cirucumstances? The update might help a little, but it is definitely not the solution. Does anyone have any solutions? Lion shouldn't be this buggy... I moved to Mac to get away from the garbage of bugs and compatibility issues... -

Please boot in safe mode and test. Still slow? If you connect to a wireless network, you may have to connect with Ethernet in safe mode.
After testing, reboot as usual (not in safe mode.)

Firefox sometimes freezes up or runs slow and I can't find it on my c drive where it should be at.
I started running slow and some times I freeze up and says non responding.Than when I tried to uninstall it and start over it doesn't appear to be on my program 86 folder at all and I tried in safe mode and still ran slow and stuff.

If you've bought it from iTunes, you should be able to re-download it for free.
Download directly from iPod by going to the iTunes Store-App and find the "Purchased"-menu. From here you should get a complete list of all your bought items and the ability to re-download.
Download from iTunes on PC/Mac by opening iTunes > Go to iTunes Store > Go to the menubar on the left and choose "Purchased". Now, from the appearing window select the proper categori on top of the screen.

Running Slow, Displaying information I can't find...
I have a MacBook Pro and when I run any application it runs slow. At first I thought, 'It is almost full, I should clear it.' I did, about 30 gigs of it but it is still running incredibly slow. I've looked into About This Mac and it says there is 100.27 GB worth of Movies. I have no idea what these movies are but I can't locate them anywhere on my mac. Anything that I did have on my mac I transfered to an external harddrive and had deleted (or so I thought). I've run OmniDiskSweeper but even that can't locate the movies. Aparently there is 56.31 GB worth of Other things on there too! I have it plugged into power but it still runs slow. I've been meaning to take it in to have the battery replaced (or serviced as it has notified me a couple times but just dissapears) as it has done 757 Cycles, which I assume is recharges. Just choosing the Apple logo and then About This Mac takes about 30 seconds per selection. Any gesture takes forever to load as well. Choosing another window take ten to fifteen seconds to swap over. So any selection really takes ten to forty seconds to swap over. I've shut down, and restarted my computer but still no luck. I'm a little confused as the only time I have EVER experienced this - and I don't mean to start any quarrels - was with a Windows computer.
I'll give you an indication of how slow it is. I've opened Safari and have Apple as my home page. Twenty-five minutes have passed by but the loading bar is sitting comfortably with the 'o' in .com. Running pages takes forever to load and so does keynote. As does Word and PowerPoint. I do not know what else to do. I've been cleaning things off and erasing free space, deleting trash and deleting trash securely. I'm at a loss! My MacBook has never run this slow and has been so relaible until this pass couple months. I'm confused. The following is what my Mac is...

If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. For situations Disk Utility cannot handle the best third-party utility is Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible.
Note: Alsoft ships DW on a bootable DVD that will startup Macs running Snow Leopard or earlier. It cannot start Macs that came with Lion or later pre-installed, however, DW will work on those models.
Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep. Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts was significantly reduced since Tiger. These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard or later and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive.

About file quarantine in OS X
If you require anti-virus protection I recommend using VirusBarrier Express 1.1.6 or Dr.Web Light both from the App Store. They're both free, and since they're from the App Store, they won't destabilize the system. (Thank you to Thomas Reed for these recommendations.)
Troubleshooting Applications
I recommend downloading a utility such as TinkerTool System, OnyX, Mavericks Cache Cleaner, or Cocktail that you can use for removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc. Corrupted cache, log, or temporary files can cause application or OS X crashes as well as kernel panics.
If you have Snow Leopard or Leopard, then for similar repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the command line. Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. Applejack does not work with Lion and later.
Basic Backup
For some people Time Machine will be more than adequate. Time Machine is part of OS X. There are two components:
1. A Time Machine preferences panel as part of System Preferences;
2. A Time Machine application located in the Applications folder. It is
used to manage backups and to restore backups. Time Machine
requires a backup drive that is at least twice the capacity of the
drive being backed up.
Alternatively, get an external drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
1. Carbon Copy Cloner
2. Get Backup
3. Deja Vu
4. SuperDuper!
5. Synk Pro
6. Tri-Backup

Additional Hints
Be sure you have an adequate amount of RAM installed for the number of applications you run concurrently. Be sure you leave a minimum of 10% of the hard drive's capacity as free space.
Add more RAM. If your computer has less than 2 GBs of RAM and you are using OS X Leopard or later, then you can do with more RAM. Snow Leopard and Lion work much better with 4 GBs of RAM than their system minimums. The more concurrent applications you tend to use the more RAM you should have.
Always maintain at least 15 GBs or 10% of your hard drive's capacity as free space, whichever is greater. OS X is frequently accessing your hard drive, so providing adequate free space will keep things from slowing down.
Check for applications that may be hogging the CPU:
Pre-Mavericks
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder. Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu. Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order. If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time (>=70,) then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar. Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process. See if that helps. Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
Mavericks and later

For situations Disk Utility cannot handle the best third-party utility is Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible.
Note: Alsoft ships DW on a bootable DVD that will startup Macs running Snow Leopard or earlier. It cannot start Macs that came with Lion or later pre-installed, however, DW will work on those models.

About file quarantine in OS X
If you require anti-virus protection I recommend using VirusBarrier Express 1.1.6 or Dr.Web Light both from the App Store. They're both free, and since they're from the App Store, they won't destabilize the system. (Thank you to Thomas Reed for these recommendations.)
Troubleshooting Applications
I recommend downloading a utility such as TinkerTool System, OnyX, Mavericks Cache Cleaner, or Cocktail that you can use for removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc. Corrupted cache, log, or temporary files can cause application or OS X crashes as well as kernel panics.
If you have Snow Leopard or Leopard, then for similar repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the command line. Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. Applejack does not work with Lion and later.
Basic Backup
For some people Time Machine will be more than adequate. Time Machine is part of OS X. There are two components:
1. A Time Machine preferences panel as part of System Preferences;
2. A Time Machine application located in the Applications folder. It is
used to manage backups and to restore backups. Time Machine
requires a backup drive that is at least twice the capacity of the
drive being backed up.
Alternatively, get an external drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
1. Carbon Copy Cloner
2. Get Backup
3. Deja Vu
4. SuperDuper!
5. Synk Pro
6. Tri-Backup

Mac Book Pro Running Slow since installing Mountain Lion
Since I downloaded Mountain lion this summer my MAc Bok has been running slow and running hot. I am not sure what to do. I checked my hard drive is only 4GB and I may need to upgrade it. But waht else can I do?
