Re-set the phone, will work then will will slow, freeze,not receive text messages
Sluggish performance can mean that your hard disk drive is failing. Are you running Verify Disk while you're booted into you main partition or whilst booting into your Recovery partition. If you're not in Recovery mode, you should be - simply start up whilst holding down the command and R keys and use the Disk Utility app in the mix to Verify and, if necessary, Repair your hard drive.
If your hard drive has failed, you'll know with either Verify or Repair.
Try it and call back.

Snow Leopard running slow, freezing, not responding.
I am running Snow Leopard on Mac 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 3 GB SDRAM.
Over the last few days the machine has gradually become slower and slower, the spinning wheel frequently appears and programs are not responding and the system freezes.
When I restart, on a couple of occasions a white screen with grey pixel blocks has flashed up during start up, other times it has frozen on the blue screen.
I have tried running Disk Warrior, Disk Utility, ClamXav, Onyx and disconnected all hardware, then finally I have reinstalled Snow Leopard but still seem to be having the same problems.
By the way, I am also running VMware Fusion, don't know if this is relevant.
Any suggestion, please?

THE SHORT VERSION:
My OS was running extremely slowly, and computer making strange noises, much higher frequency than usual (hard drive clicking occasionally too). I reinstalled OS X from my installation DVDs using Archive and Install. The system is running much more reasonably, but sometimes freezes up. Normally when your CPU is busy, you hear a steady stream of little ticking noises, but occasionally, the pattern shifts from a steady stream into triplets of short bursts that are emitted periodically (short-long-short...short-long-short). When this occurs, the system freezes/I get a spinning colour wheel.
Has anybody ever experienced this? Can you shed light on what might be going on. Here are more details if you want to read them:
THE LONG VERSION
- I installed Firefox 3...everything was working. I closed my laptop and went to sleep
- When I woke up the next morning, I noticed it wasn't asleep, and may not have been all night
- I shut down the computer, and turned it back on.
- When I logged back into OS X...my system was all messed up. Constant spinning colour wheel, weird noises as described above. System was slow enough as to be unsuable (dock never appeared after login)
- I managed to put in my Tiger installation DVD 1 and boot up from it and run the disk utility -- NO problems were found with my hard drive.
- I called AppleCare...they recommended uninstalling Firefox 3...which I somehow managed to do, although it took a really long time -- no improvement.
- They next recommended an archive and install...so I did it.
- The system was now usable, but still had problems (the short-long-short issue described at the beginning of the post)
- I ran an Apple Hardware Test...no trouble found.
- I called AppleCare--they recommended a technician look at it (ie that I take my computer in for servicing. I haven't yet done so.
-- I have noticed that when I log in using the original Admin account (as opposed to the one I use on a day to day basis), that the system performance is much more free of problems, although even when I am logged in using this seldom-used account, the computer is not totally immune from this peculiar "short-long-short" burst of ticks that seems to accompany a freezing up.System freezing, especially after an Archive & Install points to a couple of further solutions that you may wish to try.
1. Perform an Erase & Install. Although the Archive & Install is typically very good about resolving direct damage or issues with the underlying OS, a clean reinstall will all but eliminate a software issue as the problem. If go the route of an erase and install, just make sure that use the machine for a little while to verify the issue is resolved before you go installing 3rd party applications.
2. It's possible that there's hardware failure, or an early warning indicator of hardware failure. It could be HD-based or MLB-based. Having an Apple technician with the appropriate tools to further triage the issue is more than likely in order. Let them dig through the Console logs, monitor activity monitor during load, etc. -
Macbook is running slow, freezes, pinwheel.

I've recently been having some issues with my Macbook. It has been running very slow, even after restarting. I've only been running a few programs (Safari, Word, Finder) and have been watching memory/CPU usage in Activity Monitor, but haven't noticed anything too out of the ordinary
How large is your hard drive & how much space is free?
Hard drive is 206.88GB, with 41.68GB free.
How much RAM in this computer?
2GB 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM
In what way(s) is it slow? Do applications open slowly? Do they lock up?
Applications have been locking up, frequently get a pinwheel when switching between programs (Safari to Word or to Finder). Has been unresponsive/delayed.
This is a recent problem and I just updated my system within the last few days. Is there anyway to restore my computer to before the last update? Seems similar to http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=11335359#11335359

Try working in Safe Mode by holding the Shift key while booting. This may take a few minutes, so be patient! Does the computer work any better in Safe Mode?
If you have your install discs, insert Install Disc 1 and restart the computer with the C key held down. Once the Installer has loaded, choose a language, then click the Utilities menu. Choose *Disk Utility*.
In the left-hand pane of the Disk Utility window, click on *Macintosh HD*. Click the *repair disk* button.
Report any errors that cannot be repaired.

with itunes installed on my computer it freezes/works slowly/it freezes trying to get to itunes store/it freezes working on word or excel....all in all it makes my laptop horrible. when i uninstall it the computer works just fine.......help

My iPhone 3GS is running slow, freezes up and drops calls. This is not a new phone but there is plenty of memory. I've done the holding down the buttons till the apple logo comes up, not effective Can I do anything else?

System freezing/running slower
I've been having some difficulties with my macbook as of late: in the past three days, chrome has frozen about 7 times and force quitting made the entire screen freeze (so all i could do was using the shut-down button). I've also noticed that the bootup is slower than usual. Generally speaking, the whole thing has been running slower and slower for a while now. i get the rainbow wheel of doom on a frequent basis. (also, my fan is quite loud and i can hear a rattling sound sometimes)

i've verified disk permissions, verified disk, did a hardware check (everything normal) and reset NVRAM/PRAM. I didn't even know any of these things existed until a few days ago, so if i'm honest i have no idea what i'm doing.
(also, with disk permissions i got "Permissions differ on “System/Library/PreferencePanes/Displays.prefPane”; should be drwxr-xr-x ; they are lrwxr-xr-x "" and "
should be drwxr-xr-x ; they are -rw-r--r-". I'm not sure whether that is important.)

This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box marked Allow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Enter the following command in the Terminal window in the same way as before (triple-click, copy, and paste):

The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.

Boot into Recovery. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select

I upgraded to Yosemite recently. Now my computer acts like it has a virus although my virus checker says it is clean. It is slow, freezes all the time, I have to turn off my computer to get it to work again. I don’t like the new Yosemite.

Macbook Pro running slow and freezing...please help?
Hi there everyone. I have a Macbook Pro that's a few years old and it started to experience some slowdown and freezing recently, which was even worse after installing Yosemite. It's mostly running slow on Safari but it seems that programs are freezing and taking way longer to open and close too. I'm not all that familiar with diagnosing these sorts of issues on Macs and was hopeful that someone could take a look at this for me? The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

My Fire Fox will only open in xp sp1 but then it will run slow and freeze up when i try to view a link, i have just about given up with this problem as i have tried every thing that might fix this problem.
Try disabling graphics hardware acceleration. Since this feature was added to Firefox, it has gradually improved, but there still are a few glitches.
You might need to restart Firefox in order for this to take effect, so save all work first (e.g., mail you are composing, online documents you're editing, etc.).
Then perform these steps:
*Click the orange Firefox button at the top left, then select the "Options" button, or, if there is no Firefox button at the top, go to Tools > Options.
*In the Firefox options window click the ''Advanced'' tab, then select "General".
*In the settings list, you should find the ''Use hardware acceleration when available'' checkbox. Uncheck this checkbox.
*Now, restart Firefox and see if the problems persist.

HT2353 Macbook Pro running slow and freezing
So it just started yesterday running slow and freezing. I'm starting to get very frustrated. I research to see what could be the problem. I saw people suggesting that it could be the storage. My storage is 464.75 free out of 499.25. I just brought this computer last year on christmas. I thought it could be adblock but it never cause me problems but I paused the app and it still doesn't work. What is wrong? Should I restart the computer? If I do how can I backup my things? Also i'm really not a computer person so if you can describe to me the problem in layman terms that'll be great!

Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
How much RAM & free Disk space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
In the Memory tab of Activity Monitor, are there a lot of Pageouts? -

Dec 15, 2014, 09:48:45 AM Self test - passed1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
