Running so slow its driving me crazy!!

i finally got my mac up and running with the new 300mb seagate harddrive, but its driving me crazy how slow it is. even if i open up system preferences, it takes almost a minute to pop up.
what can I do? a semi-professional looked at it and was guessing the processor is just slow. it is the dual processor 1mghz. he took out a ram card a couple months ago - i had bought an extra 256mb (i'm hoping these are right - i'm recalling off the top of my head) and left it in a plastic bag. okay to put it back in? what dangers could that cause?
please - any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Generally, 512MB of RAM is a good minimum for OS 10.4.
More is better, depending on how you use it.

I understand why you would think that, but logically it doesn't make sense. I can read and write to the ipod with windows explorer with no problems, so the flash drive seems to be ok. I can also load, read and play songs through Itunes 6 on the computer with no problems. The problems start in Itunes 7 and when the ipod is used as an ipod alone....not a drive. The diagnostic windows tell me the drive is fine and the battery is ok (just a little low on voltage) but hubby says not enough to worry about. If anything was wrong with the hardware I wouldn't be able to use it as a drive would I? Its almost as though the thing is "stuck" on the boot up window of "use Itunes to restore". I even tried to load rockbox. The software all loaded but I still got the itunes restore window on startup and thats as far as I can go. Another thing I noticed recently is I can't seem to turn the ipod off! I can reset it but it just "reboots". After the restore notice about 10 seconds later the whole screen will blank out. Also when I plug the ipod directly to the wall to charge, I also get the apple...then the itunes restore notice...but never a battery charge icon (like my classic 20gb)...is this normal? This nano was given to me - (Also, this is a first generation, but I posted in the second generation thread) Would a repartition work?

You can, open the Photos App, Open the Album you want to upload, and then Tap on the Edit button at the top right corner.
You can then Tap on the pictures to select them. Once you have all of them selected, tap on the Share button on the top left corner, and then tap on the Facebook icon. This will upload them all together.

Wireless internet keeps dropping, its driving me crazy

Ok here is the story many might have heard before. My macbook pro will randomly drop the internet connection. it will still show full bars of service but wont go anywhere. I use the latest version of firefox and the issue pops up with safari also. It happens at home and anywhere i use the internet. I was at a coffee shop and it drops randomly, at my dads house so the same thing. Now if I use my pc in any of these places the internet is flawless never drops. I want to retire my pc but am forced to use it since I can't get the internet to work properly. I have sent out the macbook pro under applecare and they said they found the problem and replaced the airport on it. I got it home worked great for awhile and now the problem is back at its regular frequency. It's driving me crazy as I even have an old macbook in the house and it works great. Does anyone have a solution as I'm ripping my hair out and I don't wanna have to send my macbook pro out again. Please help!

Your personal details show that you are using 10.2.x - is this correct, if not then update your personal details? If you are using 10.5.x then you can try these simple maintenance procedures:
Repair Permissions - /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.app. Start Disk Utility, select your HD and click on Repair Permissions. When finished, quit Disk Utility and then restart your computer.
Reset PRAM - hold down Option-Command-P-R keys when starting until you hear the startup chime a 2nd time.
Safe Mode Startup - hold down the Shift-key at startup until you see the login screen. When logged-in, then go to System Preferences/Network/AirPort
- click on the 'Network Name:' roll-button, select 'Join Other Network...', enter 'Network Name and select the security type you are using, and finally, enter your Password and click 'Join'.
- click on 'Advanced', TCP/IP and confirm that 'Configure IPv4:' is set to 'Using DHCP', click 'OK'.
- click the 'Apply' button and exit System Preferences.
Also, look in System Preferences/Accounts/Login Items. With a clean system you will see AirPort Base Station Agent and iTunesHelper in here. Other users have found RealPlayer Updater in here and removed it (- sign), and this stopped the network drops after restarting.
These Login Items are located at ~/Library/LaunchAgents/. If you don't want to lose your login items then move them to the Desktop and archive them. Then delete the originals - restart and see if it helps.

If no change after restoring with iTunes as a new iPhone or not from your iPhone's backup, more than likely your iPhone has a hardware problem. You can make an appointment at an Apple store if there is one nearby.

If push comes to shove, create a bootable flash drive and completely wipe you hard disk and reinstall os x. But that means starting fresh, so save pictures and important files to a flash drive.

How to auto remember folder view settings in finder. its driving me crazy!

Is there any way i can have finder NOT apply the view settings of the current folder to all folders opened after the current folder. It gets very annoying!

You can't change the overall behavior, but you can customize individual folders so that they will remember to always open in a particular view even if other folders are subsequently opened in a different view.
For each folder you want to "customize," open its Finder window, select the view you want, then type command-J and click the box at the top for "Always open in xxx view". That command refers to "this folder", not "all folders".
Folders that have not been customized in this way will open in the same view that was in effect for the previously opened folder. The box for "Use as defaults" at the bottom of the View Option window does not change this behavior - checking it appears rather to mean: "IF a future new folder is displayed in the same view as this one, THEN that view will have the same internal parameters (text size, etc) as this window does."

Airport extreme keeps dropping connection and its driving me crazy

Alright so I have an airport extreme, and I have been having these "dropping out" problems for a long time now. For about 20 seconds, the internet signal is at maximum strength, then for some reason just completely drops for a few seconds then comes back. So basically if I am doing anything like playing a game online or talking on aim it just drops out for a few seconds then comes back. It's driving me mental.
The airport is not far at all from my computer, and we do have 2.4ghz phones, but over at my other house, we have a linksis wireless setup, and my computer is much farther away and there are also 2.4ghz phones there, and it doesn't drop out at all.
I have tried hard resets, changing the airport channel it's on, downgrading to previous airport versions... I know it's not my computer because it does it with both our macs in the house.
If someone can help me fix this it would be very greatly appreciated.

Well I've got the same issues with an n (WDS Main), two extremes (1 WDS Relay and 1 WDS Remote) and 1 express (WDS Remote). The n keeps logging this (the MAC is of the WDS Relay extreme):

This seems to have begun with a firmware update of the n (7.2.1) and now the n constantly goes from a green status icon in AirPort Utility to an orange one and reports a WDS Error about not finding any other WDS units. Then it switches back to green. At the same time all the base stations disappear from the AirPort Utility and then come back after turning the AirPort on and off on my powerbook menu bar. Cycling the AirPort from the munu bar also restores lost internet connectivity. The actual network connectivity via the WDS network seems to stay up because I have a VOIP box attached to the WDS Remote extreme and don't loose phone service. While I'd like to get the issues reported by the n and the extremes solved at this point I'd settle for finding a way to not loose network connectivity (not the actual AirPort connection) from my PowerBook every 4 or 5 minutes. The syslog on the PowerBook shows:

HT4865 I accidently connected my iphone text to my wifes iphone and its driving her crazy. How do I change that?

So, I downloaded Icloud and somehow I connected my text to my wifes iphone. It's driving her nuts and I cant figure out how to reverse it!!! Help please!

A simple solution can be found at settings> messages> send & receive, uncheck your partners telephone number or email address.
However this has essentially been caused by sharing an apple ID for each of your iCloud accounts, this is not generally recommended and you should consider having your old Apple IDs for iCloud.

My USB ports only work if i unplug them, swap them around and plug them back in. Its driving me crazy! I have done a pram and smc reset, reinstalled lion and spent two hours on the phone to apple. Now what?!!

I have a optical lead coming out of the headphone jack in to a dac that goes in to my amp (which has speakers connected) so i can listen to music. The Dac is powered by usb. Recently the sound stopped working. I called tech support and they suggested the resets (pram and smc) and i reinstalled lion and reinstalled itunes, deleted audio files, blah blah blah.
So now when the computer turns off, or indeed randomly sometimes, I have to uplug the usb cable and put it in a different port, it then works. If I then put it back in to the original port it still works. Totally baffled. Can anyone please help. i have 3 children who are getting very bored at the sight of my growling perplexed face and the sight of my back!

I don't know why that happens, since I don't own products of this type... However, if the sole purpose of the USB connection is to provide power (not a data connection), can you connect it to something that just provides power, such as a USB power adapter (like the one that comes with iPhone)?

Or, if it needs to be connected to a USB port, it might work properly if you get a self-powered USB hub and connect the USB cable to the DAC to the hub. The hub would act like a "buffer" between the DAC and iMac. It needs to be "self-powered" (comes with its own power supply). Here's one such USB hub

Do you have anything else connected to USB (other than standard keyboard and mouse)? If so, have you tried it with ONLY the DAC connected, to see if the problem recurs? USB devices can interfere with each other.

When I have Yahoo mail open the tab shows (6 unread) when there are zero unread emails when I do have a unread email it will read 7 for one, 8 for 2 and so on. How do I get zero to read zero on the tab. I can't figure it out and its driving me crazy.

I think this thing read right before I loaded Yahoo Tool Bar so I could use Yahoo Mail as my default. Since then It hasn't been correct. It did read (4 unread) for a while then for some reason it changed to 6.

If that Toolbar is faulty, reloading it probably isn't going to do anything, just disable it and see if that problem goes away.

If you do not have enough space, then you would have to free up more space.
You can also update via itunes on your computer.

Weird PhoenixNub2.kext Warning (Please Help its driving me crazy)

Ok so this has annoyed me for some time now. one day i restarted my powerbook when it booted up i got a warning message that reads. System extension cannot be used. the system extension"/System/Library/Extensions/PhoenixNub2.kext" was installed improperly and cannot be used. Please try reinstalling it, or contact the product's vendor for an update. and since that day it comes up everytime i restart or wake it from sleep.
Once the the screen stopped working. I had to hook the powerbook into my television and and use mirroring to fix it.
The only thing i get on a google search is two things on the sony CD spyware but they said nothing of how to fix it. does anyone know what this is and how I can MAKE IT STOP.

You are correct. It is the Sony copy protection garbage. These are the two files you'll need to look for:
PhoenixNub1.kext and PhoenixNub2.kext
Now, as far as the removal process goes see below:
Boot up in 'safe-mode' (hold the shift key down while starting your computer). In the main hard drive navigate to System>Library>Extensions. Locate the two extensions (listed above) and delete them. You will have to be logged in under your admin account while doing this.
