Running System 7.5.3 files and programs on OS X 10.5.8

Hi all, it seems this might have come up before but I'm getting quite frustrated and I'm not sure how to proceed. I have an old PowerMac 7200 running System 7.5.3. I also have an iMac 7.1 running OS X 10.5.8. I want to be able to copy some of the PowerMac programs and files onto the iMac. I have copied the programs and files I need onto 100MB Iomega Zip disks, and I have an external Zip drive with a USB port that I can connect to the iMac. The problem is that the iMac won't recognise the disks formatted to System 7.5.3. How do get a copy of System 7.5.3 onto my iMac, and will it allow me to access and run the programs and files on these old disks? I've tried downloading emulators such Basilisk II and SheepShaver, but I have to say the process defeated me - I didn't really know what I was doing! I'd be really grateful for any thoughts.

I don't want to get too far into the legal issues. However, I own a license for every mac OS since Apple II which had a command line interface, and I am therefore entitled to use any of the roms from my machines (I believe). I had no difficulty in assembling a package of all the items needed to run SS because there are extremely straightforward wikis available. I never did manage to make it print or join the network, although I did not try very hard because for me it was not useful.
I have just looked at the link provided by Limnos. It appears to be true that Apple are indeed distributing free copies of the ROM and the Classic OS. There remains a minor issue of whether you can yourself distribute what you obtained free, and I believe you can not. It is probably best to let this discussion end at that.

You have to understand the difference between an Update and an Upgrade.
An Update is a free change to add to the base code or as a bug fix within an existing Operating System. Such as the .8 added to 10.5.
An Upgrade is a complete new Operating System that must be purchased. Such as 10.5 Leopard to 10.6 Snow Leopard.
10.5 Leopard was based on Power PC code and was written to be able to run on both Power PC and Intel processors.
10.6 Snow Leopard has completely rewritten code and only runs on Intel Macs.
10.7 Lion used some 32 bit which allows it to run on Late 2006 through Early 2008 MacBooks and a lot of 64 bit code.
10.8 Mountain Lion is pure 64 bit, which excludes more systems than Lion did. It can only run on the Late 2008 through Mid 2010 MacBooks. It's not something you can add memory to, for example, as it involves the base architecture.
If you’re happy with 10.5 there’s no need for you to upgrade. But realize that you can’t update any applications. Companies like Adobe, Google, Firefox, etc.. no longer support anything less than 10.6.

The Mac uses Mac OS X. The iPad uses iOS. These are two different operating systems and the apps written for one will not run on the other. Some Apple and 3rd party apps have been developed in both OSes. These apps can usually share data and files across the two OS platforms.

My 5 year old iMac's hard drive is at the point of failing. I'm trying to save al files on it, but it wont allow backup via Time Machine to an external hard drive. How can I keep from losing all the files and programs if the hard drive fails?

I'm concerned that my iMac, purchased 5 years ago, is about the crash and I can't back up my files and programs to an external hard drive via Time Machine because the computer freezes after only a couple hundred MB and gets nowhere near the required amount.
How can I save these files and programs if the computer hard drive fails or has to be replaced without the backup being able to be done? I need to do something quickly, but I'm not sure what I can or should be doing.

Get an external hard drive, some good ones that I like are the OWC, http://www.macsales.com Mercury Elite Pro drives...they are very good and reasonably priced.
Get the drive, connect via USB or FireWire, then use Disk Utility to format the new drive as Mac OS X Extended (Journaled), and then use Disk Utility to Restore the current drive to the new drive. Restore actually clones the drive so you will have a bootable backup on the external drive.
After you have formatted and named the external drive, click Restore in the main Disk Utility window, drag the name of the old hard drive to the Source box, and drag the name of the new external drive to the Destination box. DU will make an exact clone of the internal drive on the external drive.
That clone will be a complete backup of the operating system and all of your data.
You can test it by restarting the iMac and hold the Option key. That will give you a grey screen showing all bootable drives. Just click the external drive, then click the upward pointing arrow under it and the iMac will boot from that drive.

I want to sell my old macbook air, what is the best way to get my files and programs off of it?

I am going to sell my macbook air (2011) as I am replacing it with a macbook pro retina. I want to remove my files and programs from it before I sell it. What is the best way to go about this?

1) Perform a Time Machine or Cloned image backup of your system.
2) Test the Clone tomake sure it works, by booting to it (using the option key).
3) Boot to the Recovery Partition, then perform an erasure, followed by a reinstallation of the OS.
4) Shut off the Mac, after instllation and before the reboot. This will permit the next user to experience a "fresh out of the box" experience.
5) Use the Time Machine or Cloned image to migrate your apps, users & files to your new system, using SETUP ASSISTANT. Do not use Migration Assistant.

I purchased a new MacBook Pro Retina 15". Since I am using MacBook Pro and I uses Time Machine for backup files and program. Store saleman tell me I can retore my existing program and files from old MacBook Pro to new MacBook Pro computer. After files transfer it seem to be OK. But only Aperture has a problem when every time I open Aperture to edit photos, MacBook Pro ask me to key in the Aperture Serial Number that made me so inconvinent. Did any one have meet this problem and can someone teach me how to fix it, Thanks.

Either the license files were not transferred or it has to be relicensed.
Remove and then re-install aperture. On an rMBP this should take only a couple of minutes.

8dot3 filenames not created for Program Files and Program Files (x86)

Interesting issue we are realizing on Servers deployed from SCCM 2012. 8dot3names are not created for Program Files and Program Files (x86). they are created for other files/folders at the root of C and below Program Files and Program Files (x86). This is
causing issues when programs are installed and the path is then created with 8dot3 filenames for program files and program files (x86)

Arg. we just got bitten by this "feature", and it's affecting our security software stack (name starts with M and ends with ee), and some ancient crud too.
And found this, which suggests a logical reason for 8dot3name to not be present on servers, but, on clients, I think it's a rather gross assumption...

and using thode credentials I am able to login to weblogic server
the users I am talking about is the process users defined in realm.
in realm those users are defined as Default authenticator and OID authenticator.
and I am trying to authenticate one of those users defined in realm using java api so that I an access a process defined In Oracle BPM 11g

Remove odbc system dsn using batch file and odbcconf

I create user system dsn entries by using a batch file and odbcconf call. I've found references here on how to do that, yet cannot seem to find any results on how to remove them using that same call. The library information (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee388579(VS.85).aspx) states add and modify a system dsn for configdsn and configsysdsn and references equivalent to SQLConfgDataSource function. (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms716476(VS.85).aspx) but the config data source function has a a removal and this doesn't seem too.
Apologies for being obtuse, but I can't seem to locate it. Any links to how this is done from a batch file are much appreciated.

John C is basically correct, you can remove a System ODBC data source via the registry, but there is apparently no way via odbcconf.exe. That is of course really stupid and poor programming!
John, however, forgot another important registry entry. That key deletion he mentioned will disable the odbc connection, but not remove it entirely. If you just do that and then open the "ODBC Data Source Administrator", you will find the
connection is still listed, but you can't remove it or modify it. It becomes completely screwed up! There is a value to delete as well which dictates if the connection is listed. Consider it the "header" to the data source.
Also, in Windows 2003 and 2008 at least, the registry key John C listed is not quite the location to modify either. This is where to find them in those OSs:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ODBC\ODBC.INI\%DSN%
or
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\ODBC\ODBC.INI\%DSN%
The "header" I reffered to is a string value in inside a key (not the whole key!)

The string value is the data source name. This entry must be removed to remove the data source listing entirely.
Here are some batch snipets for creating and then removing an odbc data source. I'm leaving out some premiliary chunks, but you can figure it out from here. If you can't, you probably shouldn't be messing with this stuff in the first place!
In these scripts, I create and remove a 32-bit data source in either a 32-bit or 64-bit version of windows. The windows folder variable gets set to either "C:\Windows\System32" or "C:\Windows\SysWOW64" depending on the os. In case you didn't
know, on a 64-bit machine there is are also 2 differrent versions of the "ODBC Data Source Administrator" gui tool and the data source lists differ (32-bit vs 64-bit lists). The 32-bit version on a 64 bit OS is found at "C:\Windows\SysWOW64\odbcad32.exe".
The one in the start menu will load the 64-bit version so you will never find your 32-bit connections there.
Note - for simplicity I use the database name as the user name and and the data source name as well (in case there was any confusion).
Create the connection like so:

Installed OS X Server, lost access to files and programs. Need to regain access but unsure how?

I have just installed OS X Server. I have shut the Computer down overnight and on restart has removed my access, personal settings and access to all my programs and file. I have checked the size of the hard drive, it appears all files are still present? Under settings I am still listed as a administrator, I have accessed 'Applications' and opened OS X Server. My Access is still Administrator but I don't know how to return my profile to have access to all files and restor my desktop and settings.
I someone could help that would be fabulous.

Safe to presume you didn't make a cloned backup of your system prior to installing the software?
At this point it is difficult to tell what original settings are left. Why not do the Time Machine restore?

Can i migrate my files and programs from one mac book to another

I have 2 macbook pros 13.3 april 2010 release
one has a 250gb drive and the other 500gb
both are running lion - after upgrading from snow leopard
I have al my adobe creative suite and mac office on the machine with 250gb hard drive - i want to transfer all my files and applications including adobe and mac office to the 500gb machine - can this be done via migration assistant? are there things i need to check etc before doing this
i am assuming the 250gb will be empty afterwards- i am not expecting to have 2 copies of the files and applications

There are different ways to connect both Macs in order to transfer the files. As both computers have got FireWire, I recommend you to buy a FireWire cable, connect it to both computers and run Migration Assistant. We are running System OS 10.4.11 and we would like to install Firefox. I know the newest version requires 10.5 and above. Is there a way around this without updating our system?

Deleting Files and Programs - Again!

Hi,
I've asked this quesition slightly differently before and the responses have dried up, so I thought I'd try again as I've made some progress...
I cannot drag a program (to uninstall it) or a file (to delete it) directly in to the Trash.
If I drag the file or icon from anywhere other than the desktop, nothing happens, i.e. the file or icon stays where it is and the Trash remains empty.
If I drag a file or program from the desktop, I'm asked for a password and the file is permanently deleted.
If I drag a file or program from an external drive (USB Drive) it works properly (no password and it isn't permanently deleted unless I empty the Trash)
I have set up a different user on my iMac and the problem is not replicated.
Will someone please tell me why this should start happening or, better still, what I can do to revert back to normal.

I would like to change my laptop's HDD to one with a larger capacity. Is there a way for me to transfer all my current content to the new HDD from the old one without having to re-install all programs/ the OS?
