Running two copies of iTunes on one MAC

I have a couple of different user sign-ons on my MAC, I need to be able to access iTunes on both, but I want them both to share the same library. Is this possible?
I tried setting up iTunes for the second user and it had no songs, so I tried to reroute the access back to the original users library. Well after changing the access to the original user, I was able to get the songs in the second iTunes.
However, now the iTunes from the original user ID can't find most of the songs even though I did not change their locations!
So I have 2 questions.
1) Can you even run two iTunes under different User IDs that can access the same iTunes library? If so, how?
2) If you can't, how do I get my original iTunes to see all my songs again without having to go through them one at a time? I have over 17,000 songs!
Thanks!

iTunes: How to share music between different accounts on a single computer
Note that when it says "publicly accessible location", it needs to be a place where everyone has read and write access. The most common such place is the Shared folder in the Users folder, but you can place the music elsewhere if you change the access permissions manually (don't start tinkering with permissions unless you're confident you know what you're doing and can reverse things if they get messed up).

  • Two copies of iTunes on one computer?

A pretty stupid problem, but I can't figure it out. It appears that there are two copies of iTunes on one of our computers--or at least, iTunes somehow displaying two different profiles. If I have "start iTunes automatically" checked, when I connect the iPod, iTunes opens, and it shows the location of the Library file as on the workstation's local HD. Conversely, if I use the shortcut icon on the desktop to open iTunes, it points to a Library location on a network shared drive (which is where I want it to be).
I cannot for the life of me figure out where the two copies, if they exist, of the iTunes.exe file are located. The Properties for the shortcut iTunes icon is grayed out in the "find Target" box. I can find one copy of iTunes in the local c:\Programs\iTunes folder. Control Panel Add/Remove Programs list shows only one iTunes program. Is there any way to figure this out?

  • Running two copies of iTunes

I am probably an intermediate user. The best way to pose my question is, is possable to run two seperate iTunes programs one running native from my laptop and one running native off my time capsul? Each of which would have it's own library. I was at a bandmates house and he put a copy of iTunes on his time capsul (I didn't want to use the shared option from my iTunes program on my laptop). When i clicked on the software icon it opened up my iTunes software with my library. If this is not an option, is there a setting so that we can edit each others library using the shared library function in iTunes. It seems I can only stream from his library using this. We want to be able to add, delete, and edit each others librarys from within our own software. We are musicians and house everything on the timecapsul. I don't want that library native on my iTunes, just the ability to use my iTunes (or a seperate copy of iTunes)to co-manage the library. Sorry for the lenght but I wanted to be specific on what I wanted to do.

Well I confess my unconcerned and expreimental operation. Also I'm sorry for misusing an existing thread for another topic.
Actually I did what you explained: I backed up an older version of iTunes with its library.itl file and installed the new version (11.2.2). Then I made two folders in the app folder, put each version in its specific one and replaced the new library.itl with the old one. I started iTunes 11 in another user account (but did not update the library) and iTunes 10 with the regular account. When I start iT10 I get an "unknown error (-42408)" message but can click it away.
It actually works. I did this operation because of this article about downgrading from 11 back to 10: How to downgrade iTunes 11 to previous version 10.7
it says: just replace iT 11 with 10 and the new library with the old one and it worked for me earlier. My conclusion is that if you have separated libraries it also might work with two different iTunes versions if you do not run them together...

  • Several  iTunes in one Mac

An iTunes question but related to one Mac computer's common application in two or more operating systems.
If, when assigning an iTunes account, the unique computer and person identity is known I wonder why logic counts 1 for Leopard, 1 for Vista and 1 for Windows 7 iTunes.
All I want to do is listen to and/or watch my purchased media in my computer without worrying that I'll lose ability if I forget to deactivate say Windows 7 or maybe Leopard going to Snow Leopard or through having to reinstall an OS from scratch due to some failure beyond any other means of recovery.
Having lost my account in the past for ~8 to 12 months I really do not want that to happen again.

I've had my eye on an HP EX485 MediaSmart Home Server (NAS)

  • How do i set up two different ID accounts to one Mac

I have a Mac book pro and was wondering how you set up two different user ID's to one Mac.
I have logged out of itunes and set up two different libaries, when I log into one libary and log into Itunes all of my origional music is shown but when I log into the additional user ID and again into Itunes none of my purchases are shown.
If i go onto my account i have authorised the Mac but in my account it says only one computer is authorised to play / download purchases.
Any ideas on how to download my origional purchases?

Move them from one library to the other, or click here and follow the instructions.

  • Can I run two copies of FrameMaker at the same time?

I am trying to learn Structured FrameMaker. Is it possible/legal/safe to start two copies of FrameMaker on my PC at the same time?
Specifically I want to have one copy open in Structured FM to experiment and the other copy in Unstructured to take notes on what I am learning. I am trying to see if I understand the concepts by writing up a tutorial but I do not want to be locked into structured mode when do not have a template which covers all of my needs ( I am still figuring them out) and I do not yet really understand what the structured templates do.
Will the documents save by the rules of the window they are in? What other problems will/could I encounter?
    Thanks,
    Marjorie

Marjorie,<p>If your machine has sufficient disk space and memory, yes, you can run multiple copies of FrameMaker at once. To run the different user interfaces at the same time, you'd have to start both copies. Then, change the user interface in one copy. Since the change doesn't take affect until you restart FrameMaker, shut down that copy and start a new one (leaving the first user interface in effect in the other original copy.<p>All that said, I suspect you can do the testing you want in one copy of FrameMaker, using the Structured FrameMaker user interface. The structured user interface simply means you can work with structured documents; you can also work with unstructured documents. Each document is independently structured or unstructured; in fact, each flow is independently structured or unstructured. You might therefore consider using the structured user interface and opening one structured and one unstructured document in a single copy of FrameMaker. Or create a single document with side-by-side flows and put structured content in one and unstructured content in the other.<p>Just remember that some of the dialog boxes are slightly different in the two user interfaces. For example, the marker, anchored frame, insert table, and cross-reference dialog boxes all let you select an element tag. Since there are no element tags in an unstructured flow, the element tag text boxes in these dialog boxes shows <Unstructured>. If you are willing to ignore these differences, I recommend you do your experimentation in a single copy of FrameMaker.<p>--Lynne

  • How to run two instances of WoW on a Mac?

So I am looking to run two windows/instances of WoW on my mac. Basically so I can use my mage on a seperate account to rush my lowbies through instances. It wont let me simply load the game twice like on a PC, does anyone have any ideas how I could do it?

I've never played WOW so I do not know how the settings are setup on a Mac but one way that you might be able to do it is to create a second account and try running it in both accounts. Go to System Preferences/Accounts and click on the plus to create a new account. Next click on Login Options and put a check in the box that says Enable Fast User Switching. Then from your Finder in the top right hand corner you will be able to switch between your 2 accounts.

  • Two copies of iTunes on 1 PC?

Hello, I'm looking to create two discrete copies of iTunes on a PC: one for each account, with their own storage areas. This is for my folks who each have their own local account on a PC, and each have their own iPods and tastes in music.
Initially I though it might be possible to to install iTunes twice and define different installation locations for each account, but a problem surely would arise when it comes to the registry settings where it goes by app name (ie software->apple->location), which might just screw things up.
Is there a known way to make this work smoothly?
They're using XP, though I think the above is true for any version of windows.
    Many thanks in advance.

You don't need to install multiple copies of iTunes, the program itself resides in the Windows program files folder and is available to be used by each of the users that have a Windows user account. Different accounts by definition would give you completely separate libraries. Each account has it's own iTunes folder, Library and iTunes Music folder and you load it with CDs etc just as you did with your original one. The iPod can be set to update however the owner chooses, sync all, manual or sync specific playlists.

  • Can I copy my iTunes from one Mac to another to a distant location?

I have 2 homes one in NYC and the other in upstate NY. I have multiple Macs at both locations all using Snow Leopard and the latest version of iTunes(9). I only have 1 iTunes library I maintain at the upstate location and have to bring my iPod to the NYC location to play my music. Can I not copy my iTunes library to the NYC location using Home Sharing or using some other method? I often forget to bring my iPod and am left without my music.

I would like to know if there's a way to copy my settings from one mac to another? Is there a specific folder for all apps or do I have to find out each and every single file for each app?
    I need the settings for
    System (view, font, color,)
    Finder (view, etc)
iTunes (that include all library, playlists, etc),
    Firefox (Bookmarks, settings & plug-ins),
    Safari (Bookmarks, settings & plug-ins),
    Address Book (contacts)
Thuderbird (emails accounts, contacts, passwords, etc)
Stickies (stickies on the dock - i have info on there unsaved)
    Filezilla (FTP infos)
    Would appreciate.
    Thnx.
All that info is found in your user/library folder, I just did a 60 machine rollout and copied all those settings from user/library, just be forewarned that if you upgrade software those setting will not take on the machine, for example Adobe CS 3,4 will not usable by CS5.  let us know if you need more help.  Also make sure you copy most of your preferences in the user/library/prefences folder.
Note: If you are using an identical backup with all apps and user settings, you can just copy all folders from user to your new home folder.  Remember that only if the image or backup is identical to your production OS.

  • Need to run multiple copies of portal on one machine

This is a little involved to explain so I'll try to be clear.
Right now we have multiple developers working on our single copy of our portal
running on one machine at another location. No good can come of this and much
    bad has already happened.
What we need is to be able to run different copies of our portal on different
ports on that same machine. Making a copy of the domain, changing the port and
java.io.tmpdir just confuses the first server started when the second one goes
RUNNING. Changing the Web Application name doesn't help either.
It looks like it's only our stuff that gets cornfused when I set up multiple servers
    (user_projects/someDomain, user_projects/someDomain2) or multiple Web Apps (someDomain/beaApps/portalApp/webApp1,
someDomain/beaApps/portalApp/webApp2) since I can log into the console just fine.
The Big Idea is that we need each developer to have their own sandbox to play
in along with a demo/test copy of our software.
I've dug through the BEA docs and these news groups and have not found anything
that directly pertains to our situation. The BEA docs are particularly thin on
information pertaining to dealing with more than one developer or deploying to
    remote machines.
Here are some of the particulars and constraints of our setup.
We are running WebLogic Platform 7.0.0.0 on a Solaris box at another physical
location. All access is via network. We have no root access for a variety of
    reasons.
Oracle is used for our JDBC. No Pointbase.
Our WebApp has a servlet as the starting point.
We deploy an exploded version of our servlet and JSPs for convenience.
We edit and compile our java source on Windows boxes and FTP the .class and .jsp
files up to their proper places on the server.
Naturally, the ideal solution would be to have more than one machine for a server.
Right now we don't have that option.
Thanks for any help that you can give,
    Jon Davis

    Travis,
We tried something very similar to that. We're using WebLogic Platform 7.0.
We only have one login on this Solaris box.
I copied our domain (${HOME}/bea/user_projects/somePortal) to another directory
(${HOME}/bea/user_projects/somePortal-devel) and changed the relevant XML files
with regards to ports and installation directories.
Maybe the UID that each server runs as is the difference........
Maybe an earlier version of the products are more tolerant of this and what we're
    experiencing is a "feature".
At least I know that my initial approach wasn't such a bad idea :)
    Thanks,
    Jon

    Jon,
We do this with very little issues. I’ll take a stab at putting this
    into words.
I suggest that you have the developers run their own instance from their
    own Solaris
user home directory. So in /home/travis make a directory bea/app (/home/travis/bea/app)
in the bea/app directory copy the applications, bin, StartPortal.sh,
    StopPortal.sh,
and config directory from your current application, probably /opt/bea/wlportal4.0/.
Then make sure that your scripts (in the developers home directory)
    all reference
jar files in the /opt/bea/{wlportal4.0 and wlserver6.1} directory's.
    Next go
    through the /home/travis/bea/app/config/portalDomain/{config.xml & *.sh},
    /home/travis/bea/app/bin/unix/*.sh,
    and /home/travis/bea/app/application/portalDomain/{applicationDir}/WEB-INF/web.xml
and start and stop scripts to change all “application” directory references
    to
relative pathing from the /home/travis/app/bea directory also change
    all references
of the 7501 and 7502 ports to another port for each developer.
Hope this is readable and helps

    Hi Tigerlily89,
    welcome to Apple Discussions,
I would suggest that you don't have your iPod set to automatically download all your contents of iTunes to your iPod, this way you are free to control what goes onto each of your iPods from the same Library.
When your iPod is connected to your computer and appears in iTunes goto Preferences iTunes and select iPod. You should see a little box at the bottom with words Enable Disk Use.
    Tick this box.
You should see that your iPod's contents in iTunes has now turned black rather than grey. This means that you can now manually drag songs out of your iTunes Library onto your mounted iPod icon on the side of your iTunes.
Eject your iPod via the little eject symbol to the right of your iPod pic in iTunes.
Now connect your Mini to your computer and wait.
Now drag from your main iTune library whatever you wish into the iPod Mini little pic.
You can delete whatever you want to off your iPods by just clicking on the icon then viewing the contents of the iPodusing the top right Browse button.
    Hop this helps you.
    Phil
