Running Ubuntu via Parallels

Hi everyone,
I know most people are able to run Windows 7 via Parallels Desktop 6. However, I wanted to be able to run Ubuntu 10.04 via Parallels. I am unsure about how to do this as it does not recognize my partition. I am able to load natively fine, but not via Parallels. I also posted this question on the Ubuntu and Parallels forums, but there are no responses so far. Does anyone know?

I run ubuntu on the free VirtualBox with no problems and I think there are easy instructions on the web, in case that option is of interest.

  • Connecting Macs to PC running Ubuntu via Airport Express

I've been puzzling over this one for a while, and have tried various combinations of configurations through Airport Admin Utility, but still can't get this to work.
We have 2 apple computers, an iMac Dual Core and a Powerbook G4 both running OS 10.4.8, and an old Dell which is running Ubuntu 6.06.
The Macs connect to the internet via a usb modem connected to the Powerbook G4, the iMac connecting via Airport.
I would like to be able to connect the old Dell PC running Ubuntu to this internet connection, and ultimately the 2 Macs, via the ethernet port on an Airport Express box.
    Can this be done?

    Yes.
The Ubuntu would act as a gateway or router.
The Airport Express should be configured to not distribute IP addresses.
To be honest an easier solution would be to get a wireless router with ethernet ports instead.
    Are you using ADSL.
    Check out the following website.
    Reviews of equipment
    http://www.adslguide.org.uk/reviews/
I would recommend replacing your USB modem with an ethernet ADSL Modem Router
As most ADSL Modem Routers are setup through a web browser you should be fine with a Mac.
I would also check out ADSL Nation's X-Modem M3 http://www.adslnation.com/products/xmodem-m3.php It is also now available from the UK Apple store and retail stores.
    http://store.apple.com/Apple/WebObjects/ukstore?productLearnMore=TJ151
which can also be used in conjunction with an AEBS or AX.

  • Can you run a USB mini projector from a Macbook via Parallels

I recently purchased one of those cheap Tiawanese mini projectors on ebay (Model MUSB100). It features a mini b plug on one end of its cable and two USB plugs on the other. It's designed for PC use and works fine running XP on a Windows PC with the addition of some very cheap and nasty driver software that comes with it called UVTool.
What I was hoping to do was run it via Parallels and XP on my Macbook. I installed the software on Parallels and I could get a picture fine but no sound. I have had a little trouble with USB devices plugged into Parallels before, so I thought I'd download the latest version of Parallels hoping to correct the audio bug. Not a good idea. The cheap and nasty driver software causes Parallels to crash and freeze every time and I have to shut down Parallels and restart. So now that driver software is useless.
I've also tried plugging the two USB leads straight into my Powerbook, but without some sort of Mac driver that can send video out via the USB ports, it won't work.
    So here are my options.
Find some other video driver software for XP that will run safely in Parallels and send video out via the USB ports. Or,
Use my mini display port to VGA adapter and somehow find a piece of hardware that will connect the two USB cables from the projector into the VGA adapter on my Macbook. The Projection Resolution is 640 x 480 pixels (VGA).
Any suggestions? Or even another way of doing it?

Your best bet is probably to install XP via Boot Camp and then install the driver. Since that gives Windows complete control of the computer, the driver would probably work fine.

  • Installing Win version on Mac via Parallels

I'm currently running Photoshop CS2 and the trial version of Illustrator CS4 on my Mac. I'm going to be purchasing Creative Suite for Windows and installing/running this via Parallel, which allows you to run a Windows OS and it's programs on a Mac.
My question is...will I have any problems in installing or running CS4 for Win seeing as how I have other Mac versions of the same programs on the same hard drive? I plan on uninstalling these to make room for the new ones, but of course Adobe leaves behind difficult to locate files.
Any help or insight is much appreciated. Thanks!

CS 4 will install under Parallels with no issue. Just make sure you have
a large disk image set aside.

  • ISight to run in MSN (Windows Vista Business via Parallels)

    Hi guys !
I'm a MAC newbee and as I need to run some Windows applications I have installed Windows Vista Business via Parallels.
Everything works just fine - except for the iSight web-cam when running MSN. I have installed the AppleiSight drivers from the Leopard DVD into the Windows Vista and I did get it running once. But since then the iSight won't start if running MSN. The iSight works perfectly in PhotoBoot, iChat and so on, so there's no problem with the actual HW.
If I try ro re-install the drivers it seems they're already installed, still my MSN doesn't find any cam connected.
I read somewhere that I might need to make the iSight camera "available" to Windows, but I haven't been able to figure out where that might be - if that is really the case... ??!! So if anyone can point me in the right direction here it would be just awesome...
    THANKS !!!

I am having trouble getting the isight to work with aMSN messenger. When the video comes up, I can see myself in the screen viewing box, but the person I am messaging cannot. I am aware that MSN is a microsoft program and therefore might not work with apple. aMSN says that my isight is firewalled or blocked by a router and that I need port forwarding. I was wondering if there is any way around this or if anyone knows the numbers involved for the port forwarding?
"If you are unable to view a webcam in aMSN after a contact has send you an invite, or after you have issued the command to receive/send webcam, and you are behind a router, you may need to follow these steps:
If you receive: IP-Restrict-NAT and you receive false in webcam wizard, that means your connection is firewalled. (does not send the IP)
If this is the case, you will need to open some ports for the webcam to use because they are currently blocked.
To do this, open your router web-based configuration (check router manual for details on this). Once you have the web-based configuration open, browse for a setting called "port forwarding" or "port range forwarding" or something similar to that. (This might be found under the advanced features for your router).
Now that you have the port forwarding page open, you will want to set the port forwarding range so that aMSN will be able to accept and send the webcam stream.
Here's an example of how you will set up your port forwarding:
    Application: aMSN
    Start: 6890
    End: 6900
    Protocol: Both(TCP & UDP)
    IP: xxx.xxx.x.xxx
    Enabled: X (Yes/True)
Note: xxx.xxx.x.xxx is the IP of your machine that you are trying to send / receive webcam
If you have a web server open on your port 80, you can try to disable it too, sometimes it helps."

  • RH 8 running on W7 via Parallels on Mac

Have a new MacBook Pro (i7 - 4GB RAM) and have W7 working as a virtual machine via Parallels with 1GB RAM assigned to the VM. I've had no issues with this, until I needed to look at a RoboHelp project.
Adding books or pages to the TOC, changing any of the SSL output settings, editing the HTML is so slow as to make RH impossible to use. All other members of TCS 2 work ok.
I know someone else who has had the same issues. Is there any way around this?

I am no hardware expert but if that means RoboHelp only has access to 1gb of memory, I'm not surprised it is running slowly. Whilst it is the minimum spec, minimum is just that.

  • Sending out a signal via Parallel port in interrupt mode?

I am trying to send out a 5KHz TTL signal via parallel port. the CPU should be disturbed at most time. so we can't use loop structure. I guess I have to use interrupt mode to do this job.
In other languages, we might be able to programm 8253, which is a timer and counter chip on mother board. can we generate a 5KHz siganl via parallel port without disturbing CPU?
or can we call another labview program in our main labview program.by doing so, two programs are running at the same time, we may be able to solve my problem
    Thanks

    Hi Sean-
This functionality is theoretically possible, but this might not be the best option if you are concerned about latency in operation. A few references for using the parallel port in LabVIEW are linked in this thread.
If you are concerned about precise timing and operating system latency issues, you may want to consider a hardware-timed PCI counter/timer board instead. This utility is a good starting point for selecting such a card.

  • Running FMLE via command line without installation?

    Hi,
I would like to run FMLE via the command line without an installation of FMLE. I would use AIR to deliver FMLE files and call the command line via the NativeProcess API.
    Is that possible?
    Thanks a lot.
    Malte

Ladies and gentlemen.....I have solved my problemo!
The reason why the rest of the reports were getting the 'could not open file.' error was due to the fact that each discoverer instance launched was
trying to access the same standard log file simultaneously.
I modified each cmd file to write logging info to individual files: eg
    /logfile "H:\Projects\DRP Import Modelling\Automation\input2_log.txt"
Now that's there's no contention with logging, the reports are firing off beautifully in parallel :)
I am definitely having a beer this evening!
Thanks for everyone's input...kept me on the righteous path :)

  • I am trying to install Corel Draw x5 on windows xp pro via Parallels 7 and having an issue . it states about 99% through the install that it is missing a file any suggestions?

I am trying to install Corel Draw x5 on my new iMAC. I am trying to install it on windows XP Pro via Parallels 7. I have already installed some other programs without any issues so this has me puzzled. whenever the install reaches about 99% complete it says it can not find 2 files(sorry I cant recall what it was).

The error message I get is that iTunes is trying to incorrectly open Visual C services.
Is there somebody at Apple who actually read these things or are we on our own without any iTunes?

    Hi Jorg ,
Are you trying to reduce the file size with the "Reduced size PDF" in the save as other option.
Give it a try if you haven't done it prior.
Open that PDF>File>Save as Other>Reduced size PDF.
If possible ,please share the snapshot of the error message with us so that we can have a look in order to assist you further.

  • Can't connect to wireless network in vista via parallels

I have sucessfully installed vista on my macBook, but I can't reach the wireless internet connection in my building. No matter what i do i can't get it to work. Am I missing some drivers or what is happening. I can't find my airport...
    Kind regards

You would first need to connect OS X to your wireless network. Then you would need to make sure, via Parallels, that the Vista VM is bound to the wireless NIC.

  • How to backup both my MacBook air files and Windows 7 files via Parallels?

    Hi,
I'm new to apple support........I need to purchase an external drive to backup my files from my MacBook air but I also need to backup two main programs that i use for my business on Win7 via Parallels.
Can I use the same drive and/or time machine for both?
Or do I need to use two different methods?
    Thanks in advance!
    Chef Heather

Any backup utility will backup the pseudo-disk that Parallels uses just like any other file on the drive. But if you are going to do that I recommend not using Time Machine. Time Machine will backup the pseudo-disk every hour even if only one byte changed. In no time at all your backup drive will be full. I suggest you use a different utility that overwrites changed files, only.
    Suggested Backup Software
      1. Carbon Copy Cloner
      2. Get Backup
      3. Deja Vu
      4. SuperDuper!
      5. Synk Pro
      6. Tri-Backup

  • Using an AZERTY keyboard with Windows 7 via parallels

Hi, really hope you can help, its very frustrating! I've got a macbook (10.6) with a french azerty keyboard. Its all fine using applications directly on the mac but when i use windows 7 via parallels, I don't get the correct symbols eg the button to the left of the 1 key is @ (or a # when shift is pressed as well)
I've tried changing the language to all the different french options eg canadian, moroccan etc but none of them have the correct layout
thanks in advance for any replies/advice

You probably need to change the keyboard layout in Windows
From his reference to French Moroccan I suspect he has already tried that. The problem may be that no Windows layout exactly matches the Mac layout, as is the case with several languages. But maybe there is a work-around short of someone having to create a Windows custom keyboard layout.

  • What Configuration for Thinkpad T400 running Ubuntu 8.10 64-bit?

    Hello,
I will soon be assisting in the purchase of a new T400 for a friend of mine to use mainly for finishing up her Masters thesis on and also to use for her work as a teacher.
She will be going from an old Dell latitude x300 (which died of course) that ran Ubuntu 8.10 32-bit. I have finally convinced her that a Thinkpad T series is the way to go and that it is worth it to pay the extra money for durability and quality.
It will be pretty much a base system as she doesn't have a whole lot of money to play with but right now with the pretty huge sale going on I hope we can get a good deal.
My question is what kind of configuration should I go for while customizing the system? I don't want to opt for a wifi card that's going to cause problems etc.
I did look at the thinkwiki.org site and it looks like most things work fine but some things may have issues, though I'm not sure how up to date that information actually is now that Ubuntu 8.10 has had some time to mature a bit.
So what I would like to know is if there are any little things that may not work that I should know about:
Bluetooth - Looks like it works according to thinkwiki.org
    What wifi card to use?
ThinkPad 11b/g Wireless LAN Mini PCI Express Adapter III
Intel WiFi Link 5100 (AGN) with My WiFi Technology [add $20.00]
Intel WiFi Link 5300 (AGN) with My WiFi Technology [add $40.00] [Lenovo recommended]
I'm thinking stick with the base option but maybe having AGN functionality will be worth it for somewhat of a futureproofing idea. Is the Intel 5100 worth the extra 20 dollars? Is it fully functional now? What is better about the 5300 chipset that makes it more expensive than the 5100 chipset? Are either of these worth it? I don't want them if they are going to need some kind of hacking to get to work.
Understand this computer is not for me. It's for an english teacher who is Not a techie at all. But is comfortable using Ubuntu for basic things. I just don't want an update to break wifi everytime like it did on her old dell with the boardcom chipset.
I'm thinking pretty basic for the screen: 14.1 WXGA TFT, w/ CCFL Backlight, Camera
How well does the camera work? Looks like it should work fine but I want confirmation of this. She will be using Skype with it preferably with video conferencing so that her 1 1/2yr old daughter can talk with her father when they move away this summer. So functional video is a must.
For card slot I'm thinking:  Express Card Slot & 7-1 Media Card Reader
How well does the media card reader function? She will be using this to transfer photos off her camera. Regular sd cards work fine?
I appreciate everyone and anyone's input on this especially with this being a somewhat time sensitive purchase as the sale will end this week and she needs a new machine ASAP for her thesis writing.
Also, should would be getting the 6-cell battery instead of the default 4-cell. How much wiggle does a 6-cell have in the new T400's compared to the 9-cell in the T61's?
I purchased a T61 with 9-cell battery for my mother last summer (Running Ubuntu) and I must say the battery wiggle is absolutely horrible! One of the mounting hooks on the battery itself has become damaged and it's not from over abuse. I can't imagine the massive amount of flex/wiggle helped it at all.
I'm thinking a 6-cell on this one would provide decent enough battery life but not protrude as much as the 9-cell and hopefully be a bit more durable as I am not impressed with the 9-cell.
Oh and by the way, the video will just be the base integrated intel video, not switchable graphics as that will be unneccesary.
Sorry for the long winded post but I (we) certainly appreciate any clarity we can get!

I see you have already purchased your T400. But for others reading this, I'd recommend going with the integrated (Intel) graphics rather than the discrete or switchable graphics. As jrsmartyn said, cutting-edge hardware can present a challenge with Linux. But Intel is much more active than ATI/AMD right now with Linux driver development. That doesn't necessarily mean smooth sailing with either choice: you'll need a recent distro for Intel graphics support as well. But the near-term future looks better for Intel than for AMD graphics support.
The switchable graphics is interesting if you require higher performance than integrated graphics can provide. But it's complicated and new and I've seen many complaints that it doesn't work smoothly, especially with Linux. Another disadvantage to switchable graphics is that it seems only the ATI graphics have access to the digital video outputs (integrated DisplayPort and DVI on dock). A better option than switchable graphics may be to use an Advanced Dock with PCI express video card.

  • How to install the new BIOS for Satellite Pro M50 running Ubuntu

I am running Ubuntu on my Pro M50. Could someone advise me what the latest BIOS is and how to install it?
The BIOS upgrade site here seems to havean exe file but I couldn't see the BIOS file within?
    Thanks

Why do you want to update the BIOS?!
Do you have any big troubles with your notebook?!
The Toshiba European driver page provides BIOS for XP and BIOS for Vista.
Both BIOS versions must be executed while the operating system is running!
If you use the Linux on your notebook, you will be not able to update the BIOS!!!
    Do you understand?
Once again; The BIOS update should be done ONLY if its absolutely necessary. In other case dont update it!
