Running virtual box on different monitors

I have virtual box which I can full screen to create 3 separate desktops. I also have 3 old monitors. What do I need to do in order to get the 3 different desktops on the 3 separate monitors where I can move between them?

Oracle VM is more of an enterprise offering. Not saying that Virtualbox isn't used in the enterprise. It is. Oracle's VDI offering uses Virtualbox. I personally prefer Virutalbox over any of the free host based virtualization offerings out there. Its less intrusive to the host.
Oracle VM supports greater resource allocation and is built to provide enterprise level HA. Yet it requires a greater "footprint" to run. I'd say that Virtualbox is better at the "little things" and Oracle VM is better at the "big things". I have noticed that Virtualbox is a little flacky with 2012 Server virtualization. I've even played around with the new 2012 free Hypervisor offering on Virtualbox and its hit and miss. Crashes more times than not. Not to mention that the new Microsoft 2012 Hypervisor is the biggest convoluted mess I've ever seen. It works okay in a Domain environment but working in a workgroup environment... its about useless. You even have to have a Windows 8 client or a windows 2012 server to load and run the management tools for 2012 Hypervisor. Even when you get them working.... (which like to have drove me crazy)... they really are simplistic to say the least.

Did you have the screen open on your MBP when you connected the external monitor?  If so, then it probably defaulted to use it to extend your existing desktop.  If you close teh screen and work in "clamshell" mode, then it should see the external monitor as the only onitor and display everything there.  You would need an external keyboard & mouse attached for that to work properly though.

    For reference..
pacman -Ql packageName shows what files a package contains.
You might add | grep bin or something of the sort after it to find the binaries quickly (sometimes.. some files contain 'bin' in the title or a folder name, obviously)
that question has been asked many times before. please learn to use Pacman, the Forum (and corresponding Search functions), and the Wiki before asking questions, and edit your first post to append [SOLVED] to the title when you find an appropriate answer to your questions.. it will save those of us looking to help time and frustration if you do all of that. thanks.

  • Sizing a build for different monitors

    Hi,
After making a build and running the .exe on different monitors in our lab I'm finding the window isn't sizing for the different monitor resolutions. What I tried to do was using the file->VI Properties->Window Size.
In this section I tried to check the "Maintain proportions...."  and redo the build. Now, the window opens and fits in every monitor I'm trying to run the .exe in. However, everything within that window is still the same size, and on smaller monitors goes off the screen edge. Really, this just buys not having to resize the window to fit manually.
I then tried to use the "Scale all object of front panel...." In this case it DOES NOT scale everything on the panel proportionately!  Therefore, a whole bunch of the items in the panel (texts, LEDs, etc) are now overlapping. How do I overcome this obstacle?
    Thanks!

Use splitter bar to saperate the front panel into panes.  ONE control per pane.
Right click the splitter bar to set pane sizing properties.
Set controls to Scale Object with pane.
That's some good advice.  I'd add that you don't need one control per pane if they are things that don't change size, and the pane doesn't change size.  Say I have a horizontal splitter with a table on top and buttons on the bottom.  When my window resizes the table grows but not the area on the bottom pane with buttons.  Down there I can have all the controls I want because that pane doesn't change size and there isn't a need to they only have buttons.
You'll likely end up with lots of splitters and lots of panes but when you invest time into getting it right it will work on any monitor, as a full screen application or not.
Oh and remember you can set the minimum windows size, and pane size for each pane if you want to help keep the UI not get too small.
Another alternative I've seen used is to have multiple UI VIs, and have them developed for a specific resolution, and then not allow the user to resize it.  So maybe have a VI for 800 by 600, and one for 1024 by 768.  The problem with this is there are so many "standard" resolutions this isn't really a good method.  Besides users like to be able to resize their windows like all normal programs can.

  • Can't run Solaris OVF on Virtual Box 3.2

I just installed Virtual Box 3.2 on Windows 7 64-bit and I wanted to use the Solaris OVF (downloaded from the site). I imported the ovf file to the VB, using the default setting except the memory (changed from 768 to 1024). After it's done, it just wont start. it boots up then it gives an error:
syncing file system 1 done (sometimes it's 2 done, or 1 1 done)
then it dumps the kernel, then reboots. it does this over and over. i can boot it up in single-user mode.
are they just not compatible or something?

I'm able to run JSF 2.1 on Tomcat 7 without error, so it's something specific to your environment or application. Looking at the stack trace, I see several instances of "java.lang.IncompatibleClassChangeError", which suggests the code is being loaded by a VM with a different Java-compliance level than the VM that compiled the code. You might want to look at your VM settings for the project and the runtime configuration for the server. There may be more issues, but first I would rule that out.

  • Running a Front Pannel and SubVI on different monitors when using a DAQ

I have developed a test rig monitoring system. Since there are a large number of transducers and thermocouples I have had to divide the monitoring system into two parts. An air system Front pannel, which is interactive, alloying me to start stop pause the program, and a fuel system SubVI which is purly for displaying information. When the front pannel is opened I would like the SubVI to be displayed as well. I dont mind waiting for it to be called by data being sent to it, but since data will be constantly sent to it I dont want it continnuously called. Basically I want it there running in the back ground so that I can acess it whenever I need it but I dont want it getting in the way. Does this make sense?
    Thanks

They will be running on different monitors from the same PC. To allow us to view both at the same time. The problem that I am having right now is that the window is being continuously called through the data, so it will appear and disapear. If i select the close if originally closed option, and I open the subVI originally, then it will stay open for awhile then start to open and close again. I think this a labVIEW softwear issue as it happends at a different time each time I run the program. The other issue is that I need the Front Pannel to be the active Window, but not necesiarily on top.
Hopefully this makes more sense, I can attach the program if you like, but it is pretty large and requires a number of subVI's and the keithley 2700 driver package

  • Can the IPad run Oracle's Virtual Box?

There is a programme from my old Windows set up that I can't get for my iMac, so I run Oracle's Virtual Box that allows for a Windows environment to run on my Mac. So, I'm interested in whether an iPad can do the same thing. Can anyone help, please?

You cannot run the virtual machine directly on the iPad but you should be able to connect to the desktop of a virtual machine using one of the remote desktop connection apps.

  • Run solaris 11 on 32 bit oracle VM virtual Box  (windows)

    Hi All,
Is there any way to run Solaris 11 (64bit only), on a 32 bit windows machine using oracle VM virtual Box ?
    Thanks

(This is not much of a limitation since the vast majority of today's 64-bit and multicore CPUs ship with hardware virtualization anyway; the exceptions to this rule are e.g. older Intel Celeron and AMD Opteron CPUs.)

  • ISight Camera on Windows Xp as a virtual machine in Virtual Box

I'm using Virtual Box to run Windows Xp in my MacBook Pro. I have been trying to have a video conference through Messenger but iSight is not being recognized. I've gone through the process of installing the Guest Additions and there I've selected iSight. But when windows try to install the new detected hardware, does not find any driver for iSight. Has anyone been lucky to make iSight Camera work properly under this environment? I've gone to Virtual Box forum and I haven't found any positive answer.
    Message was edited by: RudyGomez

You’re absolutely right. I installed the Skype program in Mac OS X directly and not in any virtual machine. I forgot to say this. I’m using Virtual Box of Sun Microsystems as the virtualization software and not Parallels neither VMware Fusion neither BootCamp. I went to Virtual Box forums and there is not solution for the moment to make it work the iSight Camera because there is not a driver. Anyway I tried to get the driver from the installation disk that you told me but the Windows virtual machine does not catch the DVD by any means, I tried in different ways and not one worked. Besides I read that the drivers that comes with the installation DVD only works for Boot Camp. I’m not at all an expert on this.
In spite that now I can have a videoconference with my Windows’ friends and relatives, I’m still waiting for the proper solution to the iSight driver in Virtual Box.
Thanks a lot for your suggestion.

  • Simple how-to guide to adding windows 7 64-bit to mavericks as a virtual machine (Virtual Box)

Simple how-to guide to adding windows 7 64-bit to mavericks as a virtual machine (Virtual Box)
Why use a Virtual Machine: Sometimes you need to run a windows only program.  A VM lets you do that without rebooting your machine.
How is it different from Mac Boot Camp: Boot camp allows you to run windows but you must reboot your machine. It is faster and smoother than a VM (and with fullscreen details below), but you have to reboot for each use.
Is it possible to have a VM and Boot Camp: Yes, and I do this because sometimes I want to use a VM quickly without shutting down, sometimes I want the advantages of Boot Camp
How do I get Windows in Boot Camp: how-to here:

Download Virtual Box Virtual Machine Player:
    https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads
    Install Win 7 OS:
    Open Virtual Box
Choose “New” (Note: Once you click new it will require you to complete the process of creation, no option for quit.  If you make a mistake or are not ready, just finish it and then remove it and delete all files)
Name: “Windows 7 Virtual” or as you choose
    Type: Microsoft Windows
    Version: Windows 7 64-bit
Memory: I suggest 1GB if you have 4GB available, 512 MB may run slowly.  2GB+ of 4GB may slowdown your MAC OS running while the VM is running.
“Create a Virtual Drive Now” option
File Size: 25 GB should be the minimum selected, I used 25GB because I expect to use the drive to store very little.
    HD type: VirtualBox Disk Image
    Storage: Dynamically Allocated
Locate your new VM and click Start (again you will not be able to quit once you start, if you make a mistake continue until the red quit icon appears then remove the VM)
It will ask you to select the files for the OS.  Select the ISO file, for example: /Users/Christoper/Downloads/X17-58997.iso.download/X17-58997.iso
Proceed to setup Win with your preferences
Type product key from your OS purchase or an existing one that you are moving from another machine
Note: Screen resolution may be very limited on the virtual machine.  I use resolution 800 X 600 so that all of the desktop is visible.
I suggest using a windows gadget to view the CPU and Memory usage > On desktop mac-right-click i.e. separate fingers and click both > Gadgets > CPU Meter
Enjoy having Windows on your Mac!

I have found a solution to the screen being smaller in the windows 7 virtual machine.  First right-click in the desktop region and select screen resolution.  It is probably set to 800 X 600 by default which is much less than the screensize you are using.  To determine your native screensize, go to your mac and finder > applications > utilities > hardware > graphics displays.  Mine is 1440 X 900 for macbook air.  Then go back into the virtual machine and sceen resolution settings.  Choose a screen resolution which is slightly less in all dimensions so that there is no clipping and you do not have to scroll when viewing.  For me this was 1152 X 864.  Then exit saving changes and with the VM in view press command - F (or at the menu bar View > Switch to full screen), which puts you in full screen mode.  Now you should have a screen with minimal gray empty space filling the majority of your screen

  • VDI 3.0 with Patch2 - Virtual Box 2.0.10 - Host Networking

    Hi Guys,
I have got following setup at a customer site:
    Solaris 10 U7 : Sun VDI 3 Server
    NIC0 - 192.168.100.xx network - sun vdi3.0 All-in-one configuration is installed here
NIC1 - 192.168.34.xx network - windows xp template is bound to this NIC (bridged)
NIC2 - 10.10.11.xx network - windows 7 template is bound to this NIC (bridged)
When I boot those template on VBox manually - I do get correct ip from correct NIC.
I have checked the .xml config files for xp and template which does point to NIC1 & NIC2 respectively.
However, when I upload them to VDI and start cloning..the clones come out on 192.168.100.xx network.
Logically - they should have come out on the same network as their respective templates - which is not happening.
I know this feature is there with VDI 3.1 EA - however, this is a production system so cannot really use it !!
Is it even possible with VDI 3.0 to have different pools on different network? Virtual Box 2.0.10 limitation?
    Regards,
    Hardik

    Hi Hardik,
Wai is correct, VDI 3.0 allows you to specify a single NIC for each VirtualBox host in a Desktop Provider, navigate to:
Desktop Providers -> YourVBoxDesktopProvider -> Host -> Host Details (Click VirtualBox host hyperlink)
This page provides a drop-down with each plumbed NIC on this particular host. By default the first NIC is selected. Navigate to each VirtualBox host in your Desktop Provider and ensure you have selected the correct NIC and click [Save].
Now enable Host Networking in your Pool -> Settings.
All desktops registered/started from this point forward will use the specified NICs. Any Desktops already registered/running on a VirtualBox host will need to be either Shutdown or Powered-Off via the VDI UI and restarted.
Can you confirm that you have followed these steps? I have a similar setup working with various NICs for Host Networking.
If these steps still don't work, what does 'ifconfig -a' executed on your VirtulaBox host show? When you launch the VirtualBox UI and navigate to the networking section of a virtual machines settings, what Host Interfaces are listed there?

  • Virtualization of  OMV3 in Virtual Box == HOWTO

    Hi,
I published a solution on my company's blog in order to test OVM3 with virtual box, for example if you don't have servers :
These are the big steps  :_
    1) I get an .xml file information on a physical CM server with the command : ovs-agent-rpc discover_hardware > info.xml OR python /opt/ovs-agent-3.0/do_rpc discover_hardware > info.xml
You will find a working info.xml file at the bottom of my blog's.
    2) Install the OVM manager in a virtual server in Virtual Box
    3) Install the VM servers in a virtual server in Virtual Box
    4) On the virtual servers, modify the following lines in the file /opt/ovs-agent-3.0/OVSDiscoverHardware.py (at the bottom of the file) :
    result = response.replace(whole_marker, scsi_response)
    lock.release()
    f = open('/opt/ovs-agent-3.0/info.xml','r')
    result = f.read()
    f.close()
    return result
    5) On the virtual servers, copy the file info.xml we generated in the /opt/ovs-agent-3.0 directory
    6) On the virtual servers, execute the following commands :
    service ovs-agent stop
    rm OVSDiscoverHardware.pyc
    rm OVSDiscoverHardware.pyo
    service ovs-agent start
    7) now you can discover the VM servers from the VM Manager.
this intent article is pedagogic only. It is obvious we must not use this proceed for production or for performance tests._

This is only required for Oracle VM 3.0 -- also, your process will only work for a single Oracle VM Server. If you wanted to create a pool of servers, there are additional steps that you would need to do in order for the discovery process to see them as unique entities.
Also, the XML file is probably quite invalid for a VirtualBox guest, and may lead to additional issues/problems as you're referencing hardware that might not exist inside the VirtualBox guest, or PCI devices that could be in a different place.

  • Problems with getting internet explorer on my mac with virtual box 4.3.20, who can help?

    This is what I did:
    1) downloaded and installed virtual box 4.3.20
    2) copied
    curl -s https://raw.githubusercontent.com/xdissent/ievms/master/ievms.sh | IEVMS_VERSIONS="11" bash
in the Terminal (for IE 11 only). I got this from the link: Internet Explorer for Mac the Easy Way: Run IE 7, IE8, & IE9 Free in a Virtual Machine
    3) that is where things went wrong, see attached image for the error I get (after a long time) in the Terminal
Tried it twice but every time the same problem.. I hope someone can help me!

The error means that your download session was interrupted. There could be a problem with your Internet connection or a problem with the remote server providing the download. If you otherwise have no trouble with Internet, I suspect the later.
But why would you want to bother downloading someone's virtual machine to run MS Internet Explorer? Not only is there a real security risk since you don't know what the VM or installation script is doing, but if the VM is running MS Windows, then the person providing the software is breaching software distribution and copyrights laws, and so will you, using the software.
Btw, have you read any of the comments? Do you really want to download 20GB? (nonsense)
If you need IE and VirtualBox, simply create a new VM and install MS Windows using a regular copy and enter your license code. There is also no need to install different versions of IE, since IE can be configured to run as a prior version.
However, there is no need to install and run MS Windows to run IE. There are products that provide free Windows API to let you run PC applications as they were Mac applications without installing Windows, e.g. Wineskin, Wine Bottler, or commercial solutions, such as Crossover.
    See http://www.wikihow.com/Install-Internet-Explorer-on-Mac-Using-WineBottler
