Running virtual PC on iMac G3

Hello forum. I'm new at this, so please forgive me if I do something stupid! I have taken over running an annual seminar which has a database that runs in ACT (a PC program). I've been successfully running the database under Virtual PC/OSX on my PowerBook G4, but I want to hand over the running of it to my wife who is running my old iMac G3. I've just discovered I can run Virtual PC under System 9.2 on my old iMac G3 and want to know the best way to do it. My RAM is currently 640MB. I can upgrade this to 1gig can I? My hard drive is only 6GB so I have bought a 160GB Firewire external hard drive from a friend for a song. Instead of installing everything on my poor little internal hard drive, can I install Virtual PC, Windows Software, ACT and my database on the external hard drive and run everything off there? Will it be quick enough to do database updates, emailing, etc. Also my hard drive seems to run slow and I'm wondering if I should copy it across to the external hard drive, erase the internal hard disk and reinstall everything. I have all the original system disks etc. What's the best way to do this if I do? I guess I'm looking for the optimal solution so that I can get the best performance out of Virtual PC on my iMac.
Many thanks for any help in advance!

markafarrelly, Welcome to the discussion area!

Yes
...can I install Virtual PC, Windows Software, ACT and my database on the external hard drive and run everything off there?
Yes

It will be at least as fast as doing the same thing from the internal drive.

I would either (a) install everything (OS X and everything else) on the external drive and use that as the boot drive, or (b) replace the internal drive with a larger capacity (up to 120 GB) drive and install everything on that.

I fear that you are trying to download OLDER Software on a newer Operating Sysytem Meaning that you need to Install the Latest Version of Adobe on the Newer Operating System for it to work Properly. Be sure to always check the minimum System Requirements.

Slow to open and in force quit "Photoshop not responding" At this point should I uninstall and start over.

Suddenly the computer stoped reading DVDs and the only time I can read a CD is if I restart.  Quite often when I insert a CD it gets stuck and I cannot get it out until I restart and it shows up on the desktop where I can then eject it.
I have checked and double checked the finder prefs and all looks normal showing a check mark on CDs,DVDs etc. (the ones I want to show up on the desktop)
I have reset the PEAM, repaired permissions with both the disk utility on the computer and the disk utility when I start up in the Recovery Disk.  I did notice that sometimes the permission repeat the same correction several times before it moves on, and sometimes it doesn’t. I have Windows installed on a partition but I keep it unmounted until it is needed for my wife’s work.  The dock seems to be just fine and all the apps seems to run just fine.  When I insert a photo CD iPhoto does not open but when I insert a music CD iTunes does open.
Also, most every time I open iPhoto it takes a long time(sometimes as long as 2 minutes) for it to load.
Sometimes my Mail (Mail 5.3) does not post new mail but most of the time it does.
Once and a while it seems like the computer slows way down but then it seems ok ten minutes later.
All  of these ‘things’ seemed to have happen suddenly and I have not downloaded anything from the internet in some time.
Of course the warranty and extended warranty are both no longer in effect having had this computer for more than three years.
I am running Java and Adobe Player because some of the sites I go to a lot require both.

I believe that insufficient RAM may be the source of some of your problems. If you have a RAM of somewhere 4 to 8GB, you will experience smoother computing. 3GB doesn't seem right, so you might want to learn more by going to this site:
    http://www.crucial.com/store/drammemory.aspx
I don't know what know what's happening with your optical drive, but it seems you use your drive quite a bit. In that case, look into a lens cleaner for your machine. It's inexpensive, works quite well.
I hope you'll post here with your results!

    Morning All
I am currently investigating an issue with APP-V 5.0 SP2 and our internet explorer plugins, until recently we were running our internet explorer plugins via the run virtual key on our windows 7 X64 environment, however when running the run virtual we
did notice a side effect of this when trying to open office documents, where a document would take anywhere between 60-300 seconds to open with the run virtual key in place, once removed documents would open between 1-5 seconds.

When you try to run what?  The Windows program?
There are several virtualization options available... Parallels, VMware's Fusion, and VirtualBox.  Each of these will require that you have a copy of Windows to install.  VirtualBox is free and fully functional.  It's not as polished as the other for-pay options, but it's the only one I use.  Any one of these utilites creates an environment in which you can install Windows within OS X.

  • JInitiator 1.3 Fatal Error  Attachment to a running Virtual Machine failed

We are running forms 9i from 9ias R2. We have an outside client trying to access the application from a machine with Windows XP. They receive the following errror after downloading the Jinitiator 1.3.1.9: JInitiator 1.3 Fatal Error - Attachment to a running Virtual Machine failed. As we are using Windows 2000, we have not come across this before and I find nothing on Metalink.
Has anyone else had this problem? If so, do you have a solution?

    Hi,
whatever browser you are running, during installation of the Browser (Netscape 7.x) or IE (postinstall) you decided to make teh Java Plugin 1.4 your default JVM. This means the VM is started when JInitiator loads which then leads to this collision. Disable Java Plugin as a default VM and it shoudl work fine.

== Some time back, beggining with Firefox updates, at least three, or more updates ago.

Thanks for the tip. I took the following steps:
    1) Backed up the existing profile (presumably corrupted somewhere);
    2) Deleted the existing profile;
    3) Moved the existing Firefox to the Trash and downloaded a fresh copy;
    4) Started Firefox (thus allowing it to create its default profile)
    5) Copied the following files from the backup copy of the previous profile: places.sqlite, key3.db, signons.sqlite, permissions.sqlite, persdict.dat, cert8.db ---
I'm posting this from a Firefox browser, so I guess I'm OK now.

  • I just dont get it....battlefield 2 runs AWFUL on my imac 17"

I cant understand how everyone is saying how well battlefield 2 is running when on my imac its totaly unplayable. How can that be?
Im experiencing poor framerate and very very often the games just pausing as i turn around as if it cant process the information...when it does this the sound even pauses, its awful! To be honest even if I put graphics on full just to see what the senery looks like its still really poor.
Sorry I dont have much infor to give you but i think i installed it all right so I dont know what to say really!..anyone got any ideas as to why maybe it would run sooo badly on my imac when theres countless others reporting how good it is on their imacs?

I think that maybe the problem is with your windows and game software installation rather than the performance of the Mac. I have a 20" mac and I run Battlefield 2 on it without a problem with graphics features on full. I have now even tweaked the performance of the ATI X1600 from 400/400 mhz to 475/475 mhz for an extra 25% performance boost with no problems. Taking into account that Sim City 4 for the Mac is not universal binary then yes the performance will not be good but if a patch comes out that makes it universal then it should be okay. You are aware of the issues of performance for gaming with regard to the software being PPC or Universal ? This is due to the switch to Intel Chips and the fact that non intel universal coded games have to work in PPC emulation (Rossetta) hence the performance hit. Look for Universal binaries when running games as thats where you will get the best performance. As far as Battlefield 2 then thats a bonus to play that game in the first place as its running on Windows XP and its a Apple Mac after all!!! plus the fact that Bootcamp is BETA The current iMac's I feel represent the best value for money that apple has produced in a long long time.

  • HT3606 can i run icloud on a Imac G5 running Leopard 10.5.8

    can i run icloud on a imac g5 running 10.5.8 ?

I have a 2004 imac g5 and I have been able to use iCloud.com on it. I have used it with Safari, WebKit, Tenfourfox and stainless browsers.  I had the best experience in Tenfourfox, followed by WebKit.  In Tenfourfox, I was able to use all iCloud apps including the beta versions of keynote, numbers and pages.  Try it, you have nothing to loose but possibly making your old Mac more usable and relevant.

  • Attachment to a running virtual machine failed

I get the error message "Attachment to a running virtual machine failed" when trying to instantiate my active x bundled java bean.
The steps I took to create it are:
    javac Person.java
    jar -cvfm PersonBean.jar person_manifest Person.class
    set JRE=D:\Applications\JavaSoft\JRE\1.3.1_01
    set classpath=%JRE%\lib\rt.jar;%JRE%\lib\jaws.jar
    java sun.beans.ole.Packager
Then I answered the questions on the packager.
When I try to create the bean from inside my application, I get an error dialog with the title "Java(TM) Plug-in 1.4 Fatal Error".
When I try to create MSCal.Calendar in my application, all is well.
    Anyone know what is happening?

If you run the packager, try not to register the
newly created type library (*.TLB) immediately,
but let the packager create the registry instructions
    (a *.REG file).
Look at the *.REG file and check all references to
virtual machines. Since you are using the packager
from 1.3.1, probably the virtual machine (path for beans.ocx etc) points to the 1.3.1 JRE instead of the
    1.4 plugin.
Make sure, all references to the virtual machine are
linked correctly to 1.4 and reregister your TLB.
Hope that helps and please let us know if you were
successful, as this would indicate that indeed, beans
packaged with the packager from 1.3.1 can run in the
    1.4 plugin. Sylvia

I just had an afterthought, Peter, if I could bother you further; if the downstairs iMac that I want to access it from is in my wife's name and not mine (even though I'll be the one using it on her computer) does that affect anything or can I simply load the software straight into her computer without any complications?

The "RC" version of Parallels is a Release Candidate that while not a release version it is very near.
As the name implies it is a candidate for release to the public. Many larger developers have mutliple versions of their products and will have often 1 through to about 5 release candidates from which they will select one to release as the final product.
    You can find it here…
