Running vmware server on laptop issues

Hey Forum.
I'm using my laptop also as Vmware server for beeing able to have a windows machine.
But I have both and wired connection and wireless.
I can get a bridged connection on the wired LAN. But would also wan on the wireless network.
But I cannot get it to work.
I got iwl3945 up and running with great problems. But cannot get it to run.
I've set the wmnet0 bridged to eth0
wnet1 --> Host-only
vmnet3 bridged to wlan0
vmnet8 NAT
But how I do I cannot get the IP from the wireless, no matter what! So how can I fix this ?
Running Kernel 2.6.24.2TP on a IBM X60s.
Is there anything special I need to do to get it rigth - or can someone just explain it to me.
Thanks.

might be off topic but for problems with vmware I moved to virtualbox (from repo) and I forgot about problems
but running vmware I used host only networking - this seems to be easier than bridged

  • Running VMware Server 2 services as a non-root user

    Hello,
I have switched from VirtualBox to VMware Server 2 on my Arch64 server and the transition has been relatively painless. I am at the point now where I want to run VMware's services as a non-root user account (I have a service account called "svc-vmadmin" that I'd like to use). I'm generally not comfortable running services as root, but at the same time I'm conscious of the time and effort required vs. overall benefits.
I've done the usual Google searches and even checked the VMware Server 2 user guide and the VMware community, but I can't find specific details on how to achieve this.
Is this even plausible in a Linux environment? I used to run VMware Server 1 under the SYSTEM account on Windows Server, so I'm hopinga similar thing can be done on Arch.
I would greatly appreciate any information or personal experience that fellow Archers can share.
    Thanks,
    Thom

System services are handled by launchd.
If you look in /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/ you'll see a plist file for each service including org.isc.named.plist, the plist for named.
If you edit this file you'll see it's an XML document that describes the service and how the OS should handle it, including the part:
    <key>ProgramArguments</key>
    <array>
    <string>/usr/sbin/named</string>
    <string>-f</string>
    </array>
Just append another entry in the array that says <string>-u nobody</string> (or whatever username you want to run as.

  • New dedicated Server, incompatiblew with VMware Server 1.0

    Hi
my old root running vmware server 1.0 is more than outdated and needs to be replaced, as the downtimes cause of hardware issues get bigger and bigger
Now I need to find a solution to run the virtual windows machines on debian 7.5 (wheezy)
vmware server 2 seems to be not the solution, as its also only working with patches and an outdated kernel in debian squeeze
i need to start some windows server virtual machines, i can do this manually, but i need several running parallel
    any ideas?

    Hi,
You can successfully run the old VMware Server 1.0.10 on a Debian Wheezy. I'm actually doing it.
Please find all relevant patches at VMware Server 1.0.10 and linux kenel 3.1.0.

I have faced a similar problem, but I was testing a lot of things simultaneously (not very smart obviously), of which was adding SCSI and IDE disks.
    Anyway:
I am running VMware server 1.0.4 on Windows XP.
    I have a Solaris 10 8/07 virtual machine installed.
The VM is NATing through the host os's network.
I have two network adapters (physically on my laptop), one wireless and one wired, I can have any combination of them being enabled or disabled according to where I am working, and sometimes I start the virtual machine with neither of them enabled.
When I installed the Solaris VM, the network interface was configured as pcn0. At some point (don't know exactly what i was testing then) pcn0 was no longer available and pcn1 suddenly appeared. Later on this happened again and pnc1 disappeared and I got pcn2.
As far as I can tell this happens when I start the VM with a different combination of NIC's enabled / disable , i.e. for some reason, having a different physical interface enabled causes Solaris in the VM to configure a different instance of the pcn interface.
I am not sure yet if this is really what is going on, but for now I am focusing on testing what is running on the vm rather than giving in to my technical cravings to get to the roots of this problem, so for a quick fix, just grep for pcn in /etc/path_to_inst, and try plumbing the instances you find there. The one that does not return an error is the one that is currently working.
Just change your hostname.pcnx or pcnx.dhcp file to reflect the correct instance number and do an "svcadm clear physical" this will get your network started and start all the dependent services.
    Hope this helps.

  • VMware Server Web Access Console interface Q

    Hi,
Running VMware Server 2.0.2 with VMware Remote Console Plug-in (vmware-vmrc-win32-x86.exe). How do get the VMware machine to appear in the cosole area instread of a seperate pop-up window. Also if I open multiple windows how to get them to appear under as tabs in the console window instead of seperate windows.
New at this so details would be appreciated so I can do it. By the way is there 64bit versions of the Console exe? what about VMware server 2.0.2?
    Thanks

I managed to install Windows 7 in Vmware Server yesterday. And it worked fine, except that my whole system became very unresponive together with the Windows 7 installation. But it did work. I rebooted my computer today and started up the vmware deamon, and no luck in connecting to the server. I only get an 'Unable to connect' error in Firefox. To fix this, I will have to remove /etc/vmware and install vmware-server over again.
So at the moment, Virtualbox is winning hands down. It don't slow down my hole system, and Windows feels as fast as it was running not in a VM. And it works. The only issue is very slow IO.
Vmware Workstation 6 was alot faster than the Server version. Maybe I shuld try it instead. Just have to find a PGKBUILD for it.

  • Standard Upgrade Path from VMWare Server?

I've been using VMWare Server for years to test my software. Specifically I have 2 "beige box" PCs running CentOS running VMWare Server running various versions of Windows Server as domain controllers and file servers as well as numerous workstations. I have a complete mini multi-domain Windows network. When I run the tests for my software it really pushes the 2-3 vms involved with a lot of network communication and some disk activity.
With care and some brute force this has worked well. At least I don't need a stack of PCs. And it's free so it's hard to complain. But unfortunately it's not terribly reliable. The web interface stops working - sometimes only after a day. Clocks drift causing authentication issues. Generally bad things happen if I try to run more than 2 images on the same server. I've gotten to be pretty good at combating these problems but I'm hoping to find something a little more reliable.
So now I'm willing to actually pay for something (gah!) and I would like to upgrade. But VMWare has so many products I just have no idea what I should be looking for.
What is the standard upgrade path from VMWare Server?
    Mike

Ok. Two people say use ESXi so I guess I'll just try to burn an ESXi DVD and see what it's like. But ...
Is performance really good enough to compile large projects and do backups over and so on?
VMware Server has worked well enough for me over the years but performance was not like real hardware. But the real problem was reliability. If I ran more than 2 VMs at a time, eventually they would just get their tentacles in a tangle and I would have to kill them and delete lock files and bah! I'm going to assume by your endorsement that ESXi doesn't have any of these problems.
Also, the machine I'm using is a lowly DELL i660 i3-3240 with 8GB of memory. I paid $429 USD for it at a local consumer electronics store! This is no server. Will it even work?

Here's the errors I get after running vmware-config.pl
The correct version of one or more libraries needed to run VMware Server may be

  • VMware-server: Any way to get this to work? Kernel issues! SOLVED

    Hi all,
I am trying to get VMware server installed, but am having a lot of difficulty.
According to multiple sources of information, I am told I need to install vmware-server-modules first.
When I try to install, yaourt gives the following error: error: target not found: kernel26>=2.6.32.
When I try to install vmware-server, yaourt gives the error error: target not found: kernel26>=2.6.29.
    FYI:
    $ uname -r
    3.2.5-1-ARCH
The Wiki deals with VMware Player and Workstation, but not Server. There is a forum/aur information relating to installing Server which is quite old (mostly 2010, some 2011), however given I am running an up-to-date kernel I seem to be hitting a dead end. Is there anyone who knows how to get this working?
    I have seen:
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=101982
    https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=6182
I have tried VirtualBox in the past but have had issues getting the networking properly configured, so VMware remains my preference. If there are other decent virtualisation options I am willing to listen.
Your assistance would be much appreciated!

Thank you for your posts. My own research and your comments has convinced me that VMware Server is not the right way forward nowadays.
    EXSi:
I have an unused  box (Dell GX620 usff) which seems like it would be suitable to run EXSi and 2-3 VMs, but no more due to RAM limits of 4GB on the mobo. I THINK its 64-bit, but not 100% sure - knowing this is an EXSi requirement for recent versions is somewhat annoying. Also, from what I understand, there is no native Linux control application (vSphere is Windows only, right?), which makes VMware feel entirely like the wrong choice for me.
    Citrix XenServer:
This looks promising - does anyone use this?
    VirtualBox:
I hear your comments ... maybe its time to do some reading on this. Seems like I'll only get it to work if I take the time to do it right. As usual, so no suprises there Given that it will be easier to experiment on my usual system than have to spend time on a new box, I think I'll investigate this first.
Please feel free to leave further comments on this subject - I'm still interested in your experiences. It will however, be marked as SOLVED, as VMware-server is out.

  • Running Windows Server with Hyper-V on Toshiba Laptop

I will soon be in charge of a Windows server that my company is purchasing to run SQL Server off of. In order to further prepare myself, I want to get some extra practice outside of work with it. However, I'm thinking that my computer's requirements may
not be up to par - and I can't really afford to buy a new computer at the moment.
I have a Toshiba Satellite laptop running Windows 8.1 with an AMD A6-5200, 4 GB RAM and a 600 GB hard drive (HDD, not SSD). I have the book Training Guide: Administering Windows Server 2012 - and it suggests a computer with at least 8GB RAM. Also - the books
examples and exercises use Hyper-V for virtualization.
If my computer couldn't handle doing the exercises and examples - would Windows Server 2008 be a better idea? If so - could you point me in the right direction of guides/books/tutorials for Windows Server 2008 system administration?
    Thanks,
    -Chris

You can try running the VM with only 2GB of Memory. Also, make sure that no other program is running in the same time other than your hypervisor. You might see some slowness on the VM that way but it should be good to do some practices.

I have not noticed any strange VM behavior on my Windows XP installation. But I only use it to test websites with IE and it does not run in full screen mode.
Now I only need to find out why Opera is running at 101% CPU load since the update and I will be all set

I've used the Group Policy Object Editor (gpedit.msc) to create a shutdown script under 'Local Computer Policy/Computer Configuration/Windows Settings/Scripts (Startup/Shutdown)/Shutdown'.
The shutdown script is called Shutdown.bat and contains:
rem adding the first two lines didn't affect anything, so I REMed them
    rem set ORACLE_SID=mysid
    rem set ORACLE_HOME=c:\oracle\product\10.2.0\db_1
C:\oracle\product\10.2.0\db_1\bin\oradim -shutdown -sid mysid -shutmode immediate -log C:\oracle\product\10.2.0\db_1\database\oradim.log
    exit
I get this in the oradim.log:
    Wed Apr 15 13:16:50 2009
C:\oracle\product\10.2.0\db_1\bin\oradim -shutdown -sid mysid -shutmode immediate -log C:\oracle\product\10.2.0\db_1\database\oradim.log

Note: If I open the guest OS console and execute the Shutdown.bat file as myself (I'm in the administrator and ora_dba groups), it works perfectly ... as does opening SQLPlus and issuing 'shutdown immediate'.
    I'm stuck. Any ideas?
    Thanks.

We are also having the same issue. We create a shutdown script via the Group Policy editor which works fine if we do a manual shutdown, but if we do a remote shutdown ex: "shutdown /r /f /m <servername /t 120", it does not work, the Database crash.
As mentionned the script works when we do a manual shutdown but does not work for a remote shutdown. The group policy script contains the following:
    echo Rebooting server START at %DATE% %TIME% >> E:\oracle\product\admin\test\Reboot.log
    net stop <Oracle servicename>
    echo Rebooting server MIDDLE at %DATE% %TIME% >> E:\oracle\product\admin\test\Reboot.log
    net stop <Oracle servicename>
    echo Rebooting server END at %DATE% %TIME% >> E:\oracle\product\admin\test\Reboot.log
After the reboot we see all the echoed line in the "reboot.log" file but the "net stop" doesn't get executed or failed since the database crash and recovers
    Any ideas/feedback ?
    Thanks

Any idea on what I could have done wrong?
btw, I was chrooted when I did the "Preparing the 'vmmon', and 'vmnet' modules for our running 64-bit kernel " steps... Should I have been doing them without being chrooted?
I have to confess that I'm struggling a bit with the chroot concept...
    Thanks for your help.

I had the same or similar issue.
Following the section "VMware and kernel 2.6.29 compile modules problem" from http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Installing_VMware fixed the problem for me.

  • Vmware Server web UI stops working.

I have installed Vmware Server from AUR. It seems like it works fine for a short time. I can access the web interface after the initial configuration is done. But the problem is that is suddenly stops responding after a while. I still have not got to the point where I have installed a virtual OS. I have just created the virtual machine itself.
A couple of times is has worked with restarting the Vmware daemon. But most of the time I just get an "Unable to connect" message when I try to connect to it trough Firefox. Opera gives the same result. But telnet seems to get contact.
I'm trying to get this to work in

Does anyone have an idea on what might be the problem?

  • [solved] vmware server 1.0.4 build 56528 and kernel 2.6.25

    hi,
i updated to kernel 2.6.25 and tried to reinstall vmware server 1.0.4 build 56528 according to the wiki description.
running the vmware-any-any-update-117-very-ALPHA.tgz patch failed, because vmware-2.6.25.sh tries to patch vmblock.tar, which does not exist. instead of this there is vmppuser.tar in the sources directory.
    any ideas?
    thx & rgds

with vmware server 1.0.5 the same problem occurs.

Yeah I have this exact same problem with the current stable version of VMware.  I will definitely try the beta 2.0 and see if my laptop can run Autodesk Inventor with it in a virtual Windows environment.
