Hello I just bought a macbook pro with retina display and this is my first mac..
I honestly didn't know any of the functions and barely learned all the basic keys in these couple days I had it for
My biggest concern right now is running windows on mac
I need to run windows to basically run all the things that I ran in my pc that I can't do right now
does anyone know how to do this? I'm pretty sure there's quite a few who knows how to because all my friends run windows on mac but they don't tell me -_-

Windows on Intel Macs
There are presently several alternatives for running Windows on Intel Macs.
Install the Apple Boot Camp software. Purchase Windows XP w/Service Pak2, Vista, or Windows 7. Follow instructions in the Boot Camp documentation on installation of Boot Camp, creating Driver CD, and installing Windows. Boot Camp enables you to boot the computer into OS X or Windows.
Parallels Desktop for Mac and Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7. Parallels is software virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
VM Fusionand Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7. VM Fusion is software virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
CrossOver which enables running many Windows applications without having to install Windows. The Windows applications can run concurrently with OS X.
VirtualBox is a new Open Source freeware virtual machine such as VM Fusion and Parallels that was developed by Solaris. It is not as fully developed for the Mac as Parallels and VM Fusion.
Note that Parallels and VM Fusion can also run other operating systems such as Linux, Unix, OS/2, Solaris, etc. There are performance differences between dual-boot systems and virtualization. The latter tend to be a little slower (not much) and do not provide the video performance of the dual-boot system. See MacTech.com's Virtualization Benchmarking for comparisons of Boot Camp, Parallels, and VM Fusion. Boot Camp is only available with Leopard or Snow Leopard. Except for Crossover and a couple of similar alternatives like DarWine you must have a valid installer disc for Windows.
You must also have an internal optical drive for installing Windows. Windows cannot be installed from an external optical drive.

Effect of running windows on mac book pro retina

I was thinking to get the macbook pro retina 13" but i will need to run windows on it as there are some programs that can only be run under windows.
I read on the internet that running windows on the macbook air considerably affect performance and battery life. so i was wondering is the same expected on the MBP retina?

If you've only a 'few' Windows apps that you'll need to run, I would suggest using Parallels Desktop to run Windows as a virtual machine on a 13" rMBP. It does consume some CPU/GPU time and won't run as fast as on a 15" model, but it would be sufficient for your needs. You could also run Windows 7 using Apple's Boot Camp if you want to boot to another OS from time to time.
The machine won't be affected negatively using either method.

I am looking to purchase windows for my mac just for gaming and i was wondering how installing works.
When i run boot camp will it format my entire hard drive (ie delete all my mac stuff) or just partition part or my hard drive?
Ive read to install windows i need an 8GB memory stick, is this true? can it be an external hd?
After boot camp is installed and windows is running, what partition are games installed on? is it the windows partition? if so will it need a larger partition or can i download and run games on an external hard drive?
also can i access my mac files (mp3's, videos ect) in windows?

To install Windows with Boot Camp, you will have to open Boot Camp Assistant, in /Applications/Utilities. This application will guide you through the process of downloading the Windows support software, creating a USB drive with Windows (if you need it and your Mac didn't come with optical drive) and partitioning the hard disk to install Windows.
Boot Camp creates a second partition to install Windows, so it won't format the hard disk. However, you must be very careful during the installation, because if you do something wrong, you will lose everything. Make a backup of your files.
You can install Windows through a USB drive (you need a ISO image with Windows, that you can get if you have purchased Windows as a download) or a DVD (the copy you can buy at any shop).
After having installed Windows, Windows games will be installed in the Windows volume because Windows won't be able to write in your Mac OS X volume. Some games may let you install them in an external drive.
After installing the Windows support software, you will be able to access to your Mac OS X volume, so you can read your files but you can't write into the Mac OS X volume.

You'd need to install a virtualization product, such as VMware Fusion or Parallels Desktop for Mac. This way, you'd be running Windows alongside Mac OS X. I use VMware Fusion and recommend it. For resource-intensive applications, I boot natively into Windows, but I generally use the virtual machine for convenience sake.

VirtualBox is just one solution, in the "virtualization" category. With virtualization, you continue to run OS X and its programs, and Windows runs like another application as a "virtualized" PC. This is nice because you can use Windows and Mac programs at the same time. Ars Technica just did a review of Parallels and Fusion, two other non-free applications you can use other than VirtualBox which people use for more serious work. You should read that review because it will give you good background on how people run Windows on Macs under virtualization. I use VirtualBox and Parallels, on different Macs.
The other way to run Windows is to create a separate partition on your disk, load Windows on it, and reboot the entire Mac into Windows. Apple allows this through Boot Camp software. This basically turns the entire computer into a Windows PC, which is best for compatibility, performance, and resource use, but you can't run Mac programs while you're using Windows in Boot Camp.

Yes it will work, but I strongly recommend keeping a copy on a clone of the Mac operating system, in addition to the original 10.6 installer disc that came with the computer. If you are missing that disc, call AppleCare now before they don't have stock of it since starting in October 2011, Apple no longer supplied prebundled installer discs with MacBook Pros and relied totally on the internet for software installation. Carbon Copy Cloner or Superduper both do the job to an external hard drive and make it bootable. You can also run Windows and Mac OS X without rebooting between one and the other using other virtualization options here:

About to move from Windows to Mac. Considering purchasing retina display MBP 15" with dual boot system as I need some of my programs. How is the display in windows for photoshop?

Has anyone got any thoughts or have you yourself purchased the MBP with Retina display and added the dual boot system with windows?
I desperately need to update my gear and want a MBP.
I'm a full time photographer at my local paper and freelance photographer - use computers A LOT, and only use windows. I've experienced mac and know I prefer it, the way it runs pleases me a whole lot more and for the amount i'm processing/working I need something that will keep up.
With 12 years of photoshop gear loaded up for all my photo processing etc, I'm wanting to add Windows and have use of both. Windows would run photoshop that I had already purchased some time ago - question is, how will it run? what will the display be like running Windows on Mac with the retina display?
I use CS4 at the moment and can't afford to upgrade to CS6 just yet, plus i'd waste a lot of what I already have by starting again on Mac. I'd use Mac for everything else, need the use of Windows for portions of what I do.

There are some drawbacks, running Windows 7 (only) on a Mac via Bootcamp yields less than stellar results, especially with the Retina display.
And of your traveling, the Mac's high power needs (especially the Retina display) and lack of removable battery are going to be a serious issue. The Retina display is glossy, not ideal for viewing on the road and in varied environments.
CS4 won't run on the OS X version that comes with a Mac, so your looking at purchasing CS6.
Support for Windows is more widespread than for Mac's, also if you ever need to redownload OS X to fix a issue, requires a fast reliable Internet connection of the broadband kind.
If your running Windows on your Mac, you can expect to be on your own and not get support as easily as if you were running it on a regular PC.
If you can't afford to keep up with CS upgrades, then you shouldn't be considering a Mac because there are more paid upgrades on that than on Windows 7, it's like a annual nightmare.
IMMO your still better off on a decent, 1920 x 1080 res, matte screen, removable battery (with extras), Win 7 Pro i7 machine (Pro+ runs XP programs) which will stay like it is and get security updates until 2020.
OS X changes every year and if you don't upgrade, + all your third party software, then about 3 years later your left behind for updates.
Also you will have to buy Win 7 to run on your Mac, the OEM disks won't work.
If your trying to budget, then a Mac is certainly not for you.

Hi, I just got a MacBook Pro and I have a few questions to ask.
First of all, I had windows for YEARS, I am a pro with Windows, I know almost everything you can know about it. I switched because I was sick of viruses and money, and mac ran so much smoother and was much easier to use, however I still wanted to do games on it, run Windows Applications, etc.
So silly me, when I bought my mac, I thought it already had windows on it because they were like "Mac does Windows too. Now you can run windows on mac!" so I fell for that one.
So here's my problem. I can't find my Windows XP installation CD's to install Windows, I've looked everywhere, and I'm pretty sure at this point I don't have it.
So I checked a few websites and there were two versions of Windows XP Home Edition with Service Pack 2. One that was the UPGRADE which was $100 and the other that was the FULL version which was $200. Which one is the correct one? I don't wanna be spending $200 either if I do need to get the $200 one, so what other options do I have; because I really want Windows on my mac but I don't want to spend that much money on it.
Oh and one last thing... Which is better, Parallels or VMware Fusion (or are they pretty much the same)? I won't be using Boot Camp so I need to know which to use.
If someone could help me I would highly appreciate it.

OEM, when used to describe software, is used to differentiate that version of the software which is bundled with other hardware or software from that same software package sold on its own as a retail package. The packaging and legal rights that come with the OEM versions of a software package generally differ from what is provided with the retail versions. The functionality of the software is sometimes the same, but it is quite common for the OEM version to be a version with reduced functionality. (For instance the OEM version of Cyberlink PowerDVD supports two-channel audio but not multi-channel sound systems. A customer who wishes to play DVDs with multi-channel sound is required to pay to upgrade to the full version). The OEM version of a software package may also be limited to be usable only with the hardware it came with. For instance the Nero burning ROM OEM software only functions with the same brand burner it is bundled with.
Typically OEM software licenses require the installer to agree to additional terms to have a valid license. Microsoft requires certain conditions of distribution and support for its System Builders, which is how it describes the installers with privileges to use OEM licenses. Personally I have always used the OEM or System Builder versions of Windows without any kind of problem (at least here in Germany).
There are however some OEM versions (mostly coming together with Notebooks from certain Manufacturers, like Dell) that are indeed that much tied to the hardware, that they won't work on other computers.
But the 'free sold' System Builder versions don't have that kind of limitation.

Can not get mac to run Windows Virtual PC

I tried to download VM 7 but I cannot get it to load. It says that I have downloaded it earlier today. I tried but was unsuccessful at downloading it. Is there any way of finding it with Finder so I can uninstall it?
