Running windows on Retina MBP - HOT LAPTOP. Running games on bootcamp HOTTER! Any tips?

I own one of the new retina MBPs is there a way to minimize the heat? While running windows I feel that it's slightly hotter, when I run games on windows it almost hurts my fingers.
I'm pretty sure this isn't good for my laptop.

Guess what, there is a good long discussion we had on MBPR last week with all the things we learned.

  • HDMI Audio Output doesn't work in Windows on Retina MBP

When I'm using Windows 7 (with BootCamp) on my Retina MacBook Pro, I like to connect it to my TV using the HDMI out to watch movies. However, when in Windows, it doesn't seem to output the audio to the TV. Instead, it plays through the MacBook's internal speakers. I don't know how to change it, and there doesn't seem to be in option in the Volume Controls in Windows.
Anyone have any success having both video and audio outputted to a TV in Windows 7 on their rMBP? If so, how?

Try downloading and installing bootcamp 3.1 it fixed my sound for me.

  • Dear All, I have bought a MacAir with Protection Plan. Does any body know if any AntiVirus included in the package? if not, could you recommend me some professional AntiVirus for protecting my laptop? Thanks to anybody for any tips. Luca

    Dear All,
I have bought a MacAir last December, together with Protection Plan.
Does anybody know if the Protection Plan is including any AntiVirus (maybe to be downloeaded for free)?
If not, any suggested (certified) AntiVirus I could buy?
    Thanks

There are many forms of ‘Malware’ that can affect a computer system, of which ‘a virus’ is but one type, ‘trojans’ another. Using the strict definition of a computer virus, no viruses that can attack OS X have so far been detected 'in the wild', i.e. in anything other than laboratory conditions. The same is not true of other forms of malware, such as Trojans. Whilst it is a fairly safe bet that your Mac will NOT be infected by a virus, it may have other security-related problem, but more likely a technical problem unrelated to any malware threat.
You may find this User Tip on Viruses, Trojan Detection and Removal, as well as general Internet Security and Privacy, useful: The User Tip seeks to offer guidance on the main security threats and how to avoid them.

Not without using a VM. XP is no longer supported in Boot Camp or on newer Apple computers.

  • What are the pros and cons of running iTunes from an SD card with a Retina MBP?

    Hello,
I'm thinking about getting a Retina MBP, but I think the default storage of 256GB is way to small to be used as a main computer and the upgrade to 512GB is very expensive. I was thinking of ways to reduce bulky files and was considering running iTunes from an SD card. Does anybody have any experience with doing this, what pros and cons did you discover?

I wouldn't even try storing multiple iTunes libraries on SD cards. Better idea - what I do - is store the majority of my music on an external hard drive and just my 'must have' tunes on my internal SSD. I have a 512GB SSD and use around 170GB for iTunes. On my external drive, I had about 440GB in tunes (last time I checked).
You can 'switch' libraries by holding down the option key when you launch iTunes. It's the best of both worlds - storage for on-the-go, must-haves, and an entire library of "all" of my music.
256GB should be plenty of space - I just store so much music on my internal SSD because I can!

With those symptoms, I'd try the following document:

(If there's a SpeedBit LSP showing up in Autoruns, it's usually best to just uninstall your SpeedBit Video Accelerator.)

  • New Retina MBP + Windows 7 boot camp = no nVidia GPU

I'm hoping someone will correct me wrong on this...
    I have a brand new 15" Retina MBP 2.6GHz 16GB RAM 500 SSD.
After finally getting Windows 7 SP1 installed (along with countless updates ) and boot camp 4.0, I have noticed some display problems.  My only reslution options are: 1600x1200 (which looks stretched), 1280x1024 (reallly stretched), and  lesser resolutions with which I didn't bother.  This didn't seem to make sense given the nVidia 650M.
Also, NONE of the external video ports are working (Thunderbolt to DisplayPort, HDMI to HDMI, HDMI to DVI) -- they're simply not getting a signal at all.
So I went into device manager, and the 650M is not even showing up as being installed!  All I see is "Standard VGA Graphics Adapter", which tells me Windows is only acknowledging the integrated Intel graphics.
I can't simply install an nVidia driver, as it can't see the device onto which that driver would be applicable.
I assumed this was an issue of the "automatic graphics switching."  Apple confirmed this, telling me that Windows doesn't have an option to choose between displays.  I couldn't find a way to trigger it with any third party app, either (including Adobe After Effects).
Further, Apple claims 64-bit drivers aren't yet available for this GPU, so even if I could switch it over, I'd have to step down to a 32-bit install.
So, basically, my boot camp side looks like a netbook.
I cannot be the only one experiencing this!
    Thanks in advance,
    Andrew

You can't install the windows support software before you partition. 1. Start boot camp in OS X and create the windows support CD; 2. Install windows using boot camp; 3. Install windows support software from the CD that you made.
I followed the boot camp manual exactly and the Nvidia drivers were not installed. I had to go into the Nvidia drivers directory in the windows support CD and manually run the setup.exe file. After that, the drivers were installed.
Note: when you create your windows partition in boot camp, you will select custom, and then format. It is critical that you format your boot camp partition and not your OS X partition. It will not say boot camp, but you can tell it's the right one by its size. For example, if you selected a 40 GB size for boot camp, the size of the drive you select to format should be 40 GB.

That is exactly what I said, are you sure you wanted to reply to me?
FYI, In a normal Bootcamp installation the partition will be named Bootcamp

  • Can I use a retina MBP for windows - MS Office development

    Hi,
I'm a windows user doing a lot of development work in MS Excel-VBA.
Because of the display I really would like to switch to the 13" retina MBP to do my daily work (using Parallels), but my question is whether it's really possible/advisable to work with Windows- MS Office 2010 on a retina machine? Does Excel (charts,forms...) behave well on the retina or would I run into too many formatting/display issues?
I plan to use Parallels 8 and Win 7 or 8.
Does anybody have experience on this?
    Greetings,
    BD

I can't speak to teh display quality of Office for Windows 2010 on a Retina display, but I'm successfully running Parallels 8 with Windows XP and Office 2010 - no problems with VBA at all.
But let's hear from the Retina owners - I wouldn't think that you'd have any problems.

  • Will this laptop run games ok?

Hi, will the asus q200e 11.6"  touchscreen windows 8 laptop with a intel i3 processor run games like call of duty and battlefield, or should I look at the asus K series 15.6" laptop with a AMD 8 processor. I know the AMD is going to be better but I want a touch screen and my budget is $480. so basically I want to know if the q200e will run these game ok on the i3.

The main problem you'll run into with laptops is going to be the GPU. Most laptops have an onboard graphics card due to space limitations, which is fine for normal computer use, but will really struggle when it comes to gaming.
I understand wanting to have a computer that is portable and can cover multiple uses, but gaming is probably the top thing that drastically changes the computers you'll be looking it when it comes to uses for the computer.
My suggestions, if you still want to go with a laptop, would be something online that has dedicated graphics. I'll actually check Best Buy for you and see if there are some reasonably priced gaming laptops. I'll post back later.

My MacBook Pro is running very hot after lion install.  Are there any hardware changes that will help? What can I do to get it back to normal?

I get the impression that most of the users on older hardware experiences similar temperature issues on Lion for a long time now. Awaiting for confirmation from the original poster.
In the meantime I'm just cautious with regards to pushing the machine to such extreme temps, since something tells me such behaviour which includes monitor flickering and the likes is nothing but abnormal for any type of use...
Any clues if 10.7.5 does anything on this? If not I'm afraid i see myself going back to SL for good...

  • Can I stream video to my wifi TV with Windows 8.1 on a Retina MBP

I was able to do it once.  I was able to play video on my Sony HD TV from windows 8.1 in my 15" Retina MBP.  The next day, that option disappeared.
How can I do it again?
What do I need to do?
I know I can do it with my Apple TV with itunes.  But I want to be able to do it outside iTunes.
I know it can be done.  I have done it once.  But I could not figure how to do it again.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.
