Running Windows & other software

I had posted similar questions in a previous thread, but a couple of trolls came along and highjacked that thread; so now I'm posting a revised set of questions in this new thread.
I have several questions to ask about using Microsoft Windows, Parallels (or VMware Fusion), and/or other similar products on either a late-2012 Core i5 iMac, and/or a late-2013 Core i5 MacBook Pro with Retina Display. In addition, I have some other MacOS compatibility concerns.
Here's what I want to do:
I want to configure one or both computers with Parallels (or Fusion) to be able to run MacOS 10.9 "Mavericks" alongside a recent flavor of Windows (probably Win 7) so I can run Windows software (most notably MS Access and DeLorme GPS software, but other apps as well). I would also like to use Parallels (or Fusion) to run a "virtual machine" so that I could run an earlier version of MacOS X that are incompatible with this current hardware. The most important (and possibly easiest) goal would be to run some version of MacOS 10.6.8 (server or client, I am not sure), which would be the last version of the MacOS to be compatible with some non-Apple peripheral equipment I have in my office.
Are these things possible, and what would I have to do to make it happen?
Thanks in advance.

Your going to have to try this.  Virtualization software would have to pass thru the data to device. Virtualization software will do this, but you never know how it will work until you try.

  • Running Windows / PC Software on my new Mac

I've recently converted to Mac - delighted to be here - but sadly need to be able to run specialist mathematical modelling software only written for PC's. I'm very reluctant to purchase a PC just for this purpose, so wondered what experience people have of using the various software such as Bootcamp, etc for running less mainstream PC applications on a Mac (some of the software I use is very processor hungry). I understand some of these products create virtual environments and others are coded to work more closely with the Mac Hardware (Bootcamp)? Can anybody give me some pointers / advice? Many thanks in advance!

If your application is a heavy resource user, install Windows using Bootcamp Assistant. This method of installation creates a Windows partition that natively uses all your computer's hardware when running Windows. It is as though you have changed your Mac into a PC. The disadvantage of this method of installation is that if you want to change to OSx you have to reboot your computer.
In a virtualized Windows installation (Fusion, Parallels, Virtual Box) Windows shares your computer's resources with OSx. So Windows does not have full use of all the computer's RAM for example. The advantage of a virtualized installation is that you don't have to reboot to start using the other OS.
My advice given the heavy resource usage of your application is to install Windows using Bootcamp Assistant then install Fusion or Parallels and use the Bootcamp installation as the virtual target OS. This way you have the best of both types of installations without the disadvantages of either. So if you want to run your resource heavy app you boot into Windows, otherwise you access your Windows installation through Fusion or Parallels.

  • Running Windows based software

More questions from a Mac rookie.
I just switched to a MacBook yesterday from a PC and I have one piece of software that I really need but the company does not support Mac. I've been told about VW Fusion and Windows Parallel.
Do I have to purchase and load Windows OS to run this?

If you still have your old computer and don't use it anymore, you can just take the serial number for your copy of Windows from that machine, and install Windows on Mac with Parallels or Fusion and then you don't have to buy a copy of windows.
Fusion and Parallels do not come with a copy of Windows, they just allow the means to run Mac and Windows simultaneously, however, you can always just use boot camp(Mac's ability to have Windows run in a separate partition on a Mac computer) if you don't mind running them separately. (i.e. Use Windows when you need to work, and use Mac when you're at home and don't need that Windows work program)
If you don't have a copy of Windows for either Bootcamp or Parallels, you're going to have to buy one, or cough*"find"*cough a serial number.

  • Trying to run windows compatible software on mac

Love my new mac. Have no desire to go back to windows or microsoft ever again. That said my daughter has one drawing program that software is listed as compatible with windows only (from fisher price) that she loved before our last computer died. Is there any hope or downloads I can use in order to get this up on my mac? It's really the only windows related thing I need, I don't want to have to purchase XP and get it on this as well for one thing, was hoping by now there was some sort of download that would allow software to be played on apple.

Try Crossover before you buy it. They have a great idea. The problem is there aren't a lot of programs it works with easily. I usually use VMWare Fusion and windows xp pro. That works good for most things.
If your daughter wants a nice drawing program there are some good ones for Macs. Try SeaShore or PaintBrush. They are both good and fairly simple to use. The price is right also:->

  • Is there a free way to run Windows Programs on a MacBook Pro?

    Hi
I am getting my first MacBook Pro tomorrow, and i am just curious as to how i could run Windows only software on it. It will only be a couple of games and music software, but i dont have the OSX version, and i dont really want to buy a new version. I'd rather get a free program that does the same thing as Paralells, but if there is any other paid software that is reliable id like to know.
    Thanks

Problem is virtual machine software is about 1/5th the performance of booting directly into Windows via Bootcamp, this doesn't matter that much of your games are 2D, OpenGl driven and light weight, but 3D games you either want to direct install Windows via Bootcamp...

or better yet, get a Windows 7 64 bit tower with 4GB of RAM expandable to 8GB at least, this way you can upgrade your own video card.
3D video games advance, require video card upgrades, with the Mac platform there are either no video card upgrade ability or options. You can 3D game for a short time on a powerful Mac, but once the game gets updated your slow again and become fragbait.

If you are going both Bootcamp and virtual machine software, then I recommend VMFusion or Parallels Desktop, they have the ability to copy the installed Bootcamp Windows and use it as a another virtual machine Windows, also they have more options, ease of use and abilities than VirtualBox.
Edit: Wine is a opton, however you must check to see if the software your using will work with Wine, not a lot will or if it does it's glitchy.

  • Running windows softwear

    Hello
I want to buy a softwear disc which operates on Windows 2000 / XP / Vista / Windows 7.
    1. Can I run this softwear on my new Macbook Pro and on my Intel Core duo desk top
    2. If so how do I install it.
    Mike

The real answer is Yes, No, Maybe. You can not run Windows based software on a Mac natively. What you would need to do is either install a Virtual Machine software package like VMware Fusion, Oricle virtual Box or Parallels or you could use Boot Camp to partition the hard drive, and install a version of Windows (actually with OS X Lion's version of Boot Camp you can only install Windows 7) on that other partition or in a virtual machine and then install that software.

  • Is there a way to run Windows XP or other MS software on a MAC

    Hi All,
Is there a way to format a partications HD to run Windows XP of other MS software. I specifically need to run Qick Books. Quick Books for MAC does not support multiple currencies. I have to have this feature.
    Thanks
    Paul

I've got a 2.4MHz Macbook 7.1 & I've been using Fusion to run Windows 7 Ultimate for quite a while now. I've got Win7 all updated, it shares my Macbook's network connection just like it had its very own, shares Mac folders so that those Mac folders (or even the entire Mac file structure, if I wanted to) are accessible inside Win7, & I can Copy [Cmnd-C] & Paste [Cmnd-V] info back & forth between the two OS's by just Cmnd-Tab switching back & forth between the two. Nearly seamless integration between the two.
My Windows 7 actually works better & more problem-free on my Mac, in fact, than any Windows I've ever had running on any PC machine. Believe it or not. Just as fast too, if not faster. And I don't think I have EVER seen one of those mean nasty little Windows popup messages with text and a "So whatya wanna do, bucko?" question in 'em that only a Redmond software engineer could understand.
    A couple of caveats though......
Hard drive space: Lots of it. Not knowing how much it'd take, I initially set the space my Win7 would take up on my Mac at 60GB, though Windows 7 itself is now taking up only 37GBs inside that initial 60GB allotment. I haven't yet discovered how to make that allotment size smaller, to 40GBs for example, without maybe messing something up, & I don't have the harddrive space to duplicate the 60GB file as backup. Gotta break out my external drives I guess.
And in addition to the 60Gigs of static, unchangeable space it takes up on my Mac's SSD, it uses another quarter Gig or so of my SSD's free space for its virtual memory requirements (see the Activity Monitor screenshot below).
RAM: Lots & lots of that, too. Right around 2.25GBs of Real RAM Memory it uses. I outfitted my Macbook with 8GBs though, so running Win7 along with 6 to 10 other Mac apps, including Photoshop, is usually not a problem. Close with that many other apps, but usually not a problem.
If VMWare Fusion looks like a good way to you for you to get Windows 7 running on your Mac (personally, I think it's SO cool), I'd use Craigslist to find a good deal on a copy of Fusion. And Windows 7.
Here's a Google hitlist showing a nationwide Craigslist search result for people selling VMWare Fusion disks last month & this month. Looks like $25 or so bucks is all it'd take, on average:
site:craigslist.org mac OR macintosh AND "vmware fusion" AND "intext:2012-09" OR "intext:2012-10" -macbook
    Happy Mac'in!

    Problems with Photoshop CS2
I originally purchased this software several years ago. At time I was running Microsoft Windows XP.
    This computer recently was replaced with a Dell running Windows 8.I reloaded my CS2 on this computer & it ran fine with a few exceptions as follows;
when the software comes up initially I get a message that says “could not complete your request because of program error”. Hitting OK allows me to continue using the software .
When I try to activate a function using CTLR or ALT keys I get this message “required application failed to load and the product cannot continue. Please reinstall the application”. This causes the application to abort.
Reloading my CS2 continues to generate the same messages when I depress the CTLR or ALT keys.

Your original copy is obsolete and Adobe is offering a free replacement you are entitled to. Download and use that and that should clear it up for you.

  • Can I use Remote Desktop to run Windows software from my Mac

Here's what I want to do:
    1) Set up a small office LAN with an Apple Xserve as the file server; clients are mostly iMacs but a few PCs.
    2) There are one or two software apps I need that exist only in the Windows world (such as a good document comparison software like DeltaView).
    3) I want to have one dedicated PC for my one or two essential Windows apps and then run Remote Desktop Connection on my Mac client to launch the Windows app on the PC client and use it to edit or otherwise manipulate a data file stored on the server.
    Is this possible?

    Thanks for your prompt reply.
OK, maybe I'm missing something basic but then why would I ever want to run Windows network in my office? The bugbear about Macs is that there is certain Windows software for which there is no good Mac equivalent. But you are telling me that as long as I have a couple of Windows boxes, I can run my Windows software on them through my Mac, even though the data files are stored on an separate box (an Xserve).
Now, for the $64 question -- is it possible to set up a network in such a way that I could use RDC on my PowerBook in, say, Chicago to run the software installed on the Windows box and in turn to open and manipulate the files stored on the Xserve in my office, halfway across the world in Abu Dhabi? Would this be a particularly difficult configuration?
    Thanks,

Hello cor-el, thanks for your reply. I changed my settings for downloads to desktop and it has appeared on there. When I double click I am asked which program I want to open file. I click firefox and another box "opening install" says I have chosen to open the file which is an application and do I want to save it. This is the only real option so I press save file. I get a box saying this is an executable file which may contain viruses - do you want to run. I press ok and the final box showing C drive file name and desktop appears stating application not found.
This happens the same whenever I try to install.
To my untrained eye the application is not being recognised as an application and I cannot work out how to get it to do that.
My plugin is still showing as out of date.
Is there anything you could suggest. Thanks for your time.

I am trying to install windows 7 on my macbook pro 13", when i run bootcamp it tells me that there is not a windows support software available for my computer. Where can i get the windows support software for my macbook?

Apple only supports Windows on certain hardware.
    http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp/
Apple provides their framework for Windows to run on a Mac, a piece of software called a Hybrid MBR that bridges the gap between how Windows reads the drive partition table (MBR) and EFI/GUID partition table that Mac's use.
It doesn't mean Windows can't run on your Mac, a third party solution called rEFIt will also bridge the gap and allow booting of more that just Windows, Linux as well for a triple booting computer.
Your hardware has to meet the other requirements the second and third operating system needs as as being able to install drivers that will work for your hardware, especially the fans or they will run loud and fast by default.
    http://refit.sourceforge.net/
This above is a advanced procedure which requires knowledge how computers and various operating systems, drive formats and so forth work.
I even admit I don't know everything myself, but I experiment on a separate piece of Mac hardware (out of warranty/AppleCare) designed for this purpose so in case something screws up I'm not taking down my only machine and can use the other to get online and find solutions.
There is a very high potential for losing your data if your using advanced/non-Apple methods to install Windows on your only Mac where Apple doesn't support it. Also one shouldn't be doing this on Mac hardware that is under AppleCare or warranty as it might be voided. Proceed at your own risk and education.

  • I am now running Windows 7 Ultimate on my Macbook Pro and the through VMware Fusion Software and I have a few questions about the ins and outs.

So far I have a few kinks to work out. While running Internet Explorer 8, I get the error message, " Cannot connect to the internet." In Networks on the control panel, it says that I am connected to a local area public network but there is no internet access. How do I establish a connection to my existing network which works with the mac os? Also, of course, programs like Adobe, Quick Time Player, and uTorrent/bitorrent are already installed on my computer. Do I have to download them again on windows or can I import them or share them somehow?

I am about to run specialized GIS software that may or may not need the full machine resources. I am an attorney who uses QuickBooks for my accounting. The Mac version does not do as much as the Windows version. This is from both Apple and Quick Books professionals. I am using Parallels Desktop version 8 at this time. It does not support QuickBooks Windows version per Parallels. Any other questions? I am a highly competent PC user who is new to Macs. I am entitled to my own configuration choices. That said, I know when I need help which is now.
As to the free space issue I have 665.18 GB free space out of 749.3 GB on the drive. I am not trying to run the 32 bit version. I know that it requires the 64 bit version. Besides, it does not get that far in the process. As I said Boot Camp asssitant terminates unexpectedly as soon as you hit the continue button after setting the partition size. Therefore I conclude that it does not have a chance to see which version of Windows that I am using. I am using Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit version in the virtual engine (to use Parallels speak), but again Boot Camp would not see that since it is not running. It can't run at the momenet because Apple just installed a new hard drive and I have just restored the data from TIme Machine and Parallels needs reactivated, which I have not done yet deliberatley. With all of this addtiional information do you have any further suggestions? Thanks for your time and interest my issue.

  • I run Windows 7 and the newest version (10.6) of iTunes will not install. The installer won't even begin, and when I run the Apple Software update, it tells me that iCloud and iTunes have invalid signature.

When I run the Apple Software update, it tells me that iCloud and iTunes have invalid signature and will not be downloaded. When I DL iTunes64setup.exe, the program will not start (there's a bar that flashes but nothing actually begins). I've done everything short of reinstalling Windows to fix this (system resore, unistalling all Apple products, taking down firewall, running Windows FixIt - which either won't find the problem or gives me an error saying that the troubleshooter cannot be downloaded at this time, going into the security features to allow programs without valid signatures, trying to install earlier versions of iTunes). It all started when I downloaded the Decemberists new album on my iPhone, and it wasn't downloading it properly so I connected it to my Dell, but some songs still wouldn't DL - also, the newest OS for my iPhone still won't install via WiFi - and so I uninstalled iTunes first, but nothing is helping. And I don't have any security issues (Norton has checked). Any ideas? I'm at my wit's end after 3 days of this. Thank you.

Ok, so after like 4 days of going through all these different issues, I figured out that several programs weren't downloading, and it was an issue with my wireless connectivity messing up the digital signatures, so if you plug in your comp to the modem and delete your temp files, it should start to work!
