Running Windows updates on a mirrored database
I have two SQL 2008 servers running server 2008 r2 that have two different databases mirrored. I need to install the windows updates on both servers. What is the best way to install updates and keep the databases mirrored?? I assume I need
to break the mirror, install the updates on the secondary mirror server then reboot. Then reconnect the mirror, fail over to secondary mirror server, then update the primary db server. Then reboot primary, then fail back over to the primary db
server. I'm just confused as to the exact steps for completing this. What commands need to be run when breaking or reconnecting the mirroring? Can someone point me to any specific instructions for this? Everything I find seems to leave
out specifics.
Thanks,
brockstar

As Prashanth has suggested your steps going to be to:
1. Disable witness
ALTER
DATABASE
[your database] SET
WITNESS OFF
2. Patch current mirror
3. Reboot current mirror if necessary
4. Failover from principal to newly patching mirror
--RUN on THE COMMAND ON THE CURRENT PRINCIPAL TO MOVE TO OTHER SERVER
ALTER
DATABASE
[your database] SET
PARTNER FAILOVER
5. Short outage whilst the new principal comes online
6. Start patching the current mirror (original principal)
7. reboot current mirror 8. failback to original principal server
9. add back the witness
ALTER
DATABASE
[your database] SET
WITNESS = 'TCP://[your FQDN]:[your port]'
10. Good to go

Blue Screen Crash Running Windows Update on Reboot
I installed Windows 7 and Boot Camp Support Software. Installation went smoothly and no problems. When I run Windows Update, it requires a system reboot; however, each time I boot into the Windows partition, I get the dreaded blue screen of death. Then on reboot, Windows runs startup repair and restores the last installation. I think the problem might be that I am installing too many updates at a single time but not sure if it's something to do with the Boot Camp partition. I deleted the Windows partition and reinstalled Boot Camp but the problem persists. Windows 7 works fine, but can't seem to install updates.
Did you get the Apple drivers installed off your OS X DVD?
Is that what you mean by "reinstalled Boot Camp" ?
Did you get Apple Software Update (in Windows of course) up to Boot Camp 3.2?
Try getting those installed before Windows updates more.
No need to 'delete' Windows partition, just do a custom clean format and install what you meant?
No need to deal with Boot Camp Assistant again, all that does is set aside and create a partition to begin with. -
Hi everyone,
I have been using my thinkpad x201s for more than one year by now. And recently I change a new and larger hard drive for my laptop. When I tried the thinkpad rescue and recovery disc on the new hard drive, everything works fine except that I cannot run Windows Updates after the installation was finished. The recovery DVDs were burned directly from the original image stored in the computer when the first I received my laptop last year.
Every time when I try to run the Windows Update, it shows the following: "Windows Update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running, you may need to restart your computer."
I restarted my computer later but nothing changed. Can't run Windows Updates and can't even install IE9.
I then moved back to my old hard drive and everything is normal, no problem with Windows Updates. I also tried to create a back-up image by running win 7 Backups and Restore. Later when I changed back to the new drive and followed the instructions to restore my system from the image I created earlier in a USB drive, it worked except that still the system can't run Windows Updates program.
I'm now getting very confused and upset, is it something to do with the software copyright? It's been a week now and I tried to Google the similar problem but no solutions work here. All I want to do is moving my current system to the new hard drive so that I can continue to use my laptop but it just failed updating every time.
Could anyone kindly tell me what to do when changing hard drive in order to avoid the problem I'm dealing with? Sorry I'm not a pro type user and just want my laptop to work appropriately.
My warranty has already expired so I guess the Lenovo Technical Hotline wouldn't answer my questions anymore. Please help!! Much appreciated.
Thanks so much in advance!!I'm not sure this is the issue, but from your description, it seems as though all you have to do is activate the windows update service. If I were you, I'd search for "Services" in the start menu, open it and look for "Windows Update". Check in its properties that it is set to "Automatic (Delayed)", if it isn't, set it, and start the service, you should then be able to check for updates, be careful though that none of your other programs aren't stopping the service, usually these programs are there to "optimize your performance" or "boost your system",...
Hope this helps. -
Replaced NIC and cannot run Windows update
Greetings - I disabled the onboard NIC and installed a Intel Gigabit CT PCI-E Network Adapter EXPI9301CTBLK. On reboot, Win7 found the NIC and everything appeared to function normally.
However, when I try to run Windows Update or update Windows Defender, which worked the previous day, I get the error code: 0x80248007.
I updated the NIC driver to Driver_Version: Driver ver 12.7.27.0 date: 5/15/2013 - No help.
I ran the fixit tool from - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/958046/en-us - No help.
I renamed the folder SoftwareDistribution/Download folder to Download.old - No help.
I asked Intel Support if they were aware of this - They suggested contacting Microsoft.
OS: Win7 Pro 64bit
I suspect the NIC is causing the the problem obviously and hate to remove the NIC. Anyone have a suggestion on how to resolve this?
Thank youHi,
According to the error code, this problem occurs when some files in the Windows Update are missing, or when the Microsoft Software License Terms cannot be located by Windows Update.
Microsoft already provide a fixit tool to fix this problem and you can refer to the link below to download and intall it to fix this problem for test.

Is it possible to run windows update from a specific wsus server using

ThanksIs it possible to run windows update from a specific wsus server using cmdline or powershell? Eventually I am trying to do something with powershell but without using the WSUS API for versions 4 and above.
Perhaps you could elaborate on the actual problem you're trying to solve and we can suggest appropriate and viable solutions for that problem?

MSI X79A-GD45: I can't run windows update
Hi Guys.,
I just finished setting-up a new PC for my friend..,
with the following specs:
CPU: Intel Core i7 3820 w/ Hydro Series H80
Mobo: MSI X79A-GD45
RaM: 4 x 4GB G.Skill Ripjaws Z DDR3 2133 CL9Q
GPU: MSI R7850 Twin Frozr 2GD5/OC
PSU: Corsair HX 850
Case: Thermaltake Level 10 GT
HDD: 1TB Seagate Barracuda
SSD: >>> Can't decide yet on what brand & model to purchase :D
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64
Everything is okay from the first boot up.., browsing the bios (since i just used the optimal default or standard setting), windows 7 installation, drivers installation and installing and playing BF3 for a while.
But every time I tried to run windows update., it always fail and saying ....restart the system etc (sorry I forgot the exact words )
How can I fix this?
Also I want to ask regarding the memory (ram) information it only register 1600 instead of the expected 2133 (on bios and speccy)
And 15.9GB is registering in speccy instead of 16GB (I know its just .1 :D) I'm just curious or anxious that there might be a problem
ThanksThank you Sir. I think I got the problem causing this., but I can't find the answer yet.
Here's how I find it: :D
After spending almost a day trying to make it work., I finally gave up and decided to clean install the OS. (win 7 ultimate 64)
After I re-installed the new OS there is no internet connection yet because I still have to install the LAN drivers of the motherboard.
So I downloaded the latest drivers from another another pc, saved it on a flash drive and installed it one at a time.
So I installed the LAN driver.. okay.. windows update now working.
I installed all the other motherboard (except for the Intel IRST) and ATI drivers. windows update still working.
Installed the latest Intel IRST... windows update stopped working again..., :(
so I uninstalled it.. but still windows update not working. Luckily I found the system restore and restored it to the time when I haven't installed the Intel IRST.. and its working again... :D
NOW.... I downloaded and installed the latest Intel IRST for my motherboard from Intel's website this time but the problem is still the same! the windows update stopped working again!!!!
Finally.., I just use system restore again until windows update is working.. and never installed any Intel IRST.
If you have a solution for this., please help me... -
How to run Windows update for Win XP SP3 using Firefox
My desktop PC is running windows XP with SP3. My spouse uses IE 8 for her browser. I use Firefox Version 24. for my browser. Previously, whenever we ran MS or Windows update it starts IE and runs fine. IE 8 has blown up and no longer works (Runtime Errors). I tried to go to the Windows update website using Firefox and it came back and told me that I had to use IE to run Win update on an XP system. Is this true? I don't want to use IE at all. Is there a way to use Firefox to run Windows or MS update on my Win XP system? Thank you.
Thanks for your help. That is not what I wanted to hear so I will have to try to get IE 8 working again. How do other folks do updates? Does this mean that IE is absolutely necessary to maintain your windows system? Is this true for the newer versions of Windows, 7 or 8?

While running windows updates KB2971850 and KB3000850, error 80070002 appears.
Original post
here. Was told to post in this forum.
Both KB2971850 and KB3000850 fail.
Running Windows 8.1 Enterprise 64 bit.
Steps tried:
- Log on as Administrator
- Stop Windows Update Service and clear SoftwareDistribution\Download and DataStore.
- Perform clean boot by disabling all startup and all non-MS services
- Download and run WindowsUpdateDiagnostic.diagcab
- Download standalone installers for each KB update
Absolutely nothing works. Looks like other people have had the same error however one of the above steps always seemed to fix it.
Can anyone help?Hi Gardnerp2,
You can follow these steps to troubleshoot this kind of issue:
You can't install updates in Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008, or Windows Server 2008 R2

Windows 8.1 Professional x64: Windows will not run Windows Update after fresh install
Greetings everyone. I'm having a strange issue that I can't seem to figure out. I'm developing an image with the following specs:
Hardware:
Dell XPS 12 Ultrabook Convertible
Haswell i7
8 GB RAM
256 SSD HD
Software:
Windows 8.1 Professional x64
Problem description:
After formatting and partitioning the hard drive (UEFI) with a corporate copy of Windows 8.1 x64, the laptop is booted up in Audit mode. No OEM drivers or software is installed. Windows is then activated to the KMS server and verified.
I then connect to a hotspot (no proxy required) and open up IE 11. I click tools and select Windows Update. The laptop then searches and searches for updates and never finds any. I've let it search for over 10 hours. The laptop never
returns an error message.
Troubleshooting performed:
1. I've tried different copies of Windows 8.1 - same result.
2. I've tried installing the OS with different types of media (external hd and multiple bootable USB drives) - same result.
3. I've disable the Windows Update service, deleted the contents of the SoftwareDistribution folder, restarted the Windows Update service and rebooted laptop - same result
4. I've installed this copy of Windows 8.1 on different models of laptops with no OEM drivers or software installed - same result.
5. I've installed all of the OEM device drivers in the correct order and ensured that the device manager is clear of bang signs - same result.
6. Date and time is set correctly.
Has anyone else experienced this with Windows 8.1 x64? If I take a copy of Windows 7 x64 or 8 x64 and install it on this laptop, it updates Windows without any issues. The problem seems to be with Windows 8.1.
Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.2014-03-04 13:49:52:826

Should I ever run windows update?
I just bootcamped my early 2011 macbook pro. Went really well, really fast and loving it being able to dual boot and play games and do all my srsbzn on OSX. I was wondering should I install/windows update? Does it conflict with any of the drivers by any chance?
You can and should and you can trust the Windows update.
Just use MS Security Update, too.
you can always uninstall programs, updates, rollback drivers, use restore points. It is a much more flexible OS and probably tested much more heavily.
The only drivers likely to be troble are the ones you have to use from Apple. -
Potential Windows Update database error detected 0x80070490
This is the response I get when I run the Windows update troubleshooter from the Windows 8.1 Action Center. If I click next it reports the errors have been fixed. However if I run it again it reports exactly the same errors.
After searching the Internet I have found that several users have reported having this issue. As result of the aforementioned search I have tried the following:
1) Run the Fixit tool for Windows 8.1 located at:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058/en-us.
2) Run the System Update Readiness commands: DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Scanhealth and DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth located at:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821/en-us.
3) Saved contents of C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 to a temp folder and then deleted contents of C:\Windows\System32\catroot2.
4)Renamed C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution to C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution.old
5) Restarted Windows 8.1.
6) Verified that C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 and that C:Windows\SoftwareDistribution folders had been rebuilt.
7) I then ran the Windows update troubleshooter from the Window 8.1 Action Center again and got the same response as listed above. The errors still exist and are not fixed.
8) Finally, I downloaded Windows 8.1 Enterprise Evaluation and I did a completely new clean install of Windows 8.1 and without installing anything else (no updates, no software, no antivirus) the above errors appeared within minutes after connecting
to the internet. I checked using the Windows update troubleshooter several times before connecting to the Internet and each time no problems were found, but shortly after I connected the above errors are shown to exists.
Any suggestions that will help fix this issue will be of great help.Did anyone ever find an actual fix for this problem? I have a very similar problem. I have gone through the same steps for fixing my issues with getting a message of problems found every time I run the Windows Update troubleshooter. It
continually finds what it says are Potential Windows Update Database error detected 0x800700D and says they are fixed, along with another message saying Windows Update components must be repaired and it says they are fixed as well. However, each time
I run the troubleshooter it finds the same issues. I have no problems running Windows Update under Windows 8.1 and them all installing without issue, yet I can't download or update ANY apps within the MS store and like the problem above, when it looks
for my apps it says it's having problems finding them and to try later. If I try to download even a free app, I get an error message that something happened and your purchase can't be completed. Error code: 0x80096004.
I have dug through everything I can find on this error message and tried changing my sign in on my laptop to a local account, created a new MS account to access the store and continue to get the same error message. I have tried it with my Kaspersky
Internet Security 2015 turned completely off. I've also ran SFC scannow and there are no errors and have ran DISM which found a problem but says it was fixed. After running it again, there were no errors. I have no other problems with anything
else (that I know of on my machine). It is an Asus Q400A and came with Windows 8.0. I ran all the updates and then upgraded to 8.1 through the MS store without issue. I have installed all updates since upgrading to 8.1 and have absolutely
no problem running ANY updates, but can't seem to access the store no matter what I try.
If anyone has found a solution to this I'd appreciate your input. Hard to believe MS would put out a product that has such a basic problem that has affected so many users and can't seem to come up with some resolution that doesn't require registry
editing, running commands from elevated command prompts, and a CS degree to resolve--there are soooo many issues online regarding this kind of error and others related to running SFC and DISM...most ending up in their ultimate default answer....renew or reinstall
Windows and all the updates....which still doesn't resolve the problem for many! I've always been a PC guy, but I'm starting to like the MacBook Pro I picked for work related reasons with great hesitation. I've wasted more time chasing this issue
down than I all the time I've spent actually using the Mac without even a hitch!
Thx in advance for any feedback....please no MAC blasting....at this point, it would be not well received!! -
Windows update cannot run because service is not working.
Thinkpad E545, Windows 7 (64 bit) Professional. When I attempt to run Windows Update I get the message "Windows update cannot currently check for updates because the service is not working." Microsoft Fix-It does not help. I found a YouTube posted by Richard Lloyd and followed the steps: the Windows Update service is running, the Background service is running. Several web sources including Microsoft point to an Intel RST driver. I downloaded this driver g1io15ww.exe and ran the file, but still no joy. A solution would be welcome, and Happy Thanksgiving. -- Alan
Hello and welcome,
Your laptop is AMD-based (IIRC) so an Intel driver isn't going to help.
If the update issue is caused by the AHCI driver incorrectly reporting physical sector size (that's what those IRST reports are about) it might be fixed by installing the correct AHCI driver for your laptop:
http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-edge-laptops/thinkpad-edge-e5...
There are other reasons for Win update failures, so this isn't a sure thing. Worth a try, maybe. I've personally only seen this issue with Intel hardware.

Running Windows 7 on a Mac: updates and security
I will be purchasing a new MacBook Pro soon and will need to run Windows in order to access some corporate applications and to use Internet Explorer (for Microsoft's Share Point application, Live Meeting, etc.) for my work - fairly limited Windows applications. I have been reading some comparisons of Fusion vs. Parallels and superficially understand the difference between the virtual machine approach and Boot Camp. If I want to enjoy the benefits of doing most of my personal computing on a Mac, it only makes sense for me to have Windows running as an OSX application rather than have to restart to get to Windows via Boot Camp. If I'm going to do the latter, I might as well buy a Windows PC, at least for work.
Despite searching around on the web and talking to various Apple folks on the phone and in stores, I have not been able to find clear answers about 2 issues that seem crucial in running Windows via Parallels or Fusion: (1) how does one install Windows updates, which seem to come out every few days, some of which are major fixes; and (2) what are the security concerns in running Windows as an OSX application - are there any? If there are security issues in running WIndows via Fusion or Parallels, what are the best ways to protect oneself?
A related set of questions is: (3) is it sensible to install Windows in a Boot Camp partition as well as to install it via Fusion or Parallels, or does it work to just install via the virtual machine method, at least for my purposes? If I were to install Windows both ways, would I run into licensing issues with Microsoft, where it might look to them like I was installing Windows on more than one machine? And, if I were to install Windows natively via Boot Camp, what are the best options for security?
Thank you anyone out there who can provide answers or point me to answers.1. Run Windows Update like you would on any other PC.
2. Windows is Windows no matter how it's installed so it's susceptable to the same viruses you could get by running it on any other PC.
3. Both Parallels and Fusion can boot from an installation of Boot Camp. you don't nee to install Windows twice. -
Windows Update Stalls When Running in Windows 7/Windows Virtual PC/Win XP_ Mode
Hi
This is Bob in Tallahassee. Can anyone please help. I installed Win7 Pro on a newly built PC and then Windows Virtual PC/Win XP Mode. When I try running Windows Update in the XP mode window, it keeps cycling "searching for updates"
and never reaches the next step, never stops cycling. I checked msconfig and there is a process "svchost.exe" eating 99% of resources. It is likely related to windows update. When I shut it down, my internet connection is cut
off, but the Windows Update still keeps cycling. I have tried all I know, including optimizing bios for virtualization. Is there another setting that I'm missing? Thanks. BobHi,
I find some error information in your log:

Lync and applying Windows Updates to Mirrored SQL Servers 2012
Hi
I would like to apply windows updates to our mirrored sql servers 2012 for Lync. A consultant installed Lync 2013 and the mirrored environment. According to him he states, 'Lync is actively managing that mirror opposed to standard mirror configuration'.
Can anyone give me insight into what this means when I would like to apply windows updates to these sql servers?
Thanks
KathyHi,
Based on my knowledge, if the Windows Update applys to your system, then you are able to install it without issue, you may follow the KB article for the update, there may be some action we need to do to make the update work.
You may open control panel, find Windows Updates to check your Windows update settings.
And this forum focuses on SCOM related issues, you may also post in Windows Server or SQL server forums.
If there is any misunderstanding, please feel free to let me know.
Regards,
Yan Li
