Runnning repair disc

when i bought this emac, it ran 10.2.1. more recently, i upgraded it to 10.4.6, then did a software update to wake it to 10.4.9. my disc drive has been acting up (spitting discs out sometimes) and not playing DVDs. i ran the java scripts dr. smoke reccomends by running coctail. i have also run repair permissions from the HD.
then, i booted in disc warrior, which found 4% error margin, which i repaired a couple times until it showed no more errors.
then i booted from the hardware test disc and ran the test which found no errors.
then i switched to the original install and restore disc that came with the emac and booted from there so i could run "repair disc" in the first aid function. it found multiple errors which it has repaired with the exception of one which it had not repaired despite my running it four times. the error reads:
invalid leaf record count
(it should be 15 instead of 2273)
then i restarted and ran repair permissions which found a slew of errors i repaired by running it three or four times.
my questions are:
what does that error code mean?
should i keep running repair disc over and over until it fixes that error?
does it even do any good to run repair disc from the original install and reload disc?
any ideas about what's wrong with my dvd drive, why it won't play most dvds and even spits some out?

If you are running 10.4.x, you don't use Disk First Aid repair via Disk Utility when booted from an earlier install disc for 10.2 or 10.3.
If you are running 10.4.x, you run Disk First Aid repair via Disk Utility when booted from your Tiger (10.4.x) install disc.

Corrupt Boot disc - how do I boot from OSX disc to run Repair Disc?

I have just run Verify Disc and it has identified problems which requires me to boot from my OSX disc and run Repair disc.
I think I do this by switching on while holding down C....is that right?
ALSO I can only find my Leopard boot discs and I am currently running Snow Leopard....do I NEED to use the Snow Leopard discs to boot up?

Unfortunate that your HD and Time Capsule are playing up at the same time, to say the least.
Hopefully your data will be salvageable, and there are several software options to try, here's a couple:

I've not used either, but the paid for app may look pricey but it seems highly recommended byt those that have used it.
Have you tried re-booting the Time Capsule - still seems hard to believe that's gone down as well. Good luck.

What is the next step after I repair Disc Utility

I have just finished repairing Disc Utility. I don't know which option to hit next? "Erase" "Raid" "Restore" etc ?

Was Disk Utility able to repair the disk? If so, you can simply quit Disk Utility.

Repair disc permissions always finds files to repair

I've been repeatedly running repair disc permissions via disc utility, as my MacBook Pro has become extremely slow. Every time I run the repair button the program will find 'problem' files to repair.
When I select the verify options it will not find conflicts.
Will there always be conflicts the program finds?
Incidentally, the slowness started when I upgraded to 10.5.x. And my new (aftermarket) battery gets extremely hot and won't hold a charge for long (despite priming numerous times).

New t410 image and repair discs help

First i want to say thanks to everyone for being so helpful. i've a had a few other questions that you guys have helped me on.
i just got my t410 and i am about to make some repair and/or recovery discs. First of all, when i choose "create system image" from control panel, I get 3 drives to backup: System_drv, Window 7 os (C, and Lenovo Recovery (Q. by default, lenovo recovery is NOT selected, should I select it to back that up as well? What effect will it have on the repair discs that I am going to create afterwards? And will it effect me reimaging onto a SSD?
PS. I know some of you guys are on notebookreview, where also posted something similar. if you've already read this bear with me.

Yes. If you battery lasts more than half its advertised life, it is within what Apple considers to be acceptable performance and they may refuse service. Also, if your iPod shows signs of excessive physical damage, Apple may refuse service.
If you're really only getting two hours, I would definately send it in.

You may need to rebuild permissions on your user account. To do this,boot to your Recovery partition (holding down the Command and R keys while booting) and open Terminal from the Utilities menu. In Terminal, type: ‘resetpassword’ (without the ’s), hit return, and select the admin user. You are not going to reset your password. Click on the icon for your Macs hard drive at the top. From the drop down below it select the user account which is having issues. At the bottom of the window, you'll see an area labeled Restore Home Directory Permissions and ACLs. Click the reset button there. The process takes a few minutes. When complete, restart.

An old macbook running 10.6.8 was restored using Time Machine then Snow Leopard was reinstalled and updated to 10.6.8. Now the machine is slow and repair disc permissions results in a cancelled by user message.

Our old macbook was getting a gray screen with flashing ? on bootup. Eventually I restored it using Time Machine then decided to reinstall Snow Leopard since it would not boot. Machine now boots but is slow. Ran repair disc and tried to run repair disc permissions but got a message that it was cancelled by user.
This machine is at least 6 years old and I just want to limp it along until I can afford to replace it in the spring.

You may be smelling it because with the new OS the processor is having to work harder causing it to get hotter then it would with the other OS. I can't say there is nothing wrong, but what could be happening is just that, it's getting hotter so the fan is spinning faster and moving more air so you are getting more of the smell then you would before. I would still continue to back it up, and take it to the Apple Store at a Genius Bar and have them look at it to make sure. Was the computer ever in a smoky environment??

When I go to disc utility, repair disc is not functioning, neither is the verify disc. There is a statement that says,"start up from the mac OS X intallation disc and then choose utilities Disk utility. However there is no option for that

Verify disc and repair disc are not working. They give me the option to install the "installation disc" click on utilities>Disk utility from there. When I try this, there is no option to do this that I can find. Can anyone help me to do this?

You can't run Repair Disk from the Utilities folder. With 10.4, 10.5 or 10.6 put your install DVD into the optical drive (CD/DVD drive) and reboot. Be sure to either use the disc that came with your Mac, or, if you installed a later Mac OS X version from disc, use the newer disc. As soon as you hear the boot chime, hold down the "c" key on your keyboard (or the Option Key until the Install Disk shows up) until the apple shows up. That will force your MacBook to boot from the install DVD in the optical drive.
Or if you are running 10.7 Lion or 10.8 Mountain Lion, boot from the recovery partition (Command +R on boot) and use Disk Utility to repair your OS 10.7 or 10.8 partition.
When it does start up, you'll see a panel asking you to choose your language. Choose your language and press the Return key on your keyboard once. It will then present you with an Installation window. Completely ignore this window and click on Utilities in the top menu and scroll down to Disk Utility and click it. When it comes up is your Hard Drive in the list on the left?
If it is, then click on the Mac OS partition of your hard drive in the left hand list. Then select the First Aid Tab and run Repair Disk. The Repair Disk button won't be available until you've clicked on the Mac OS partition on your hard drive. If that repairs any problems run it again until the green OK appears and then run Repair Permissions. After repairing use Startup Disk from the same menu to choose your hard drive for restarting from your hard drive.

Windows won't start and can't get system repair disc to run

I have a toshiba A505-S6980 and suddenly windows will not load up and start. I did get to safe mode and saw some windows files load up but safe mode doesn't really open up windows where I can do anything. I have a System Repair Disc and the System Recovery discs I can run but I can't get to the Toshiba Recovery Wizard. How can I get the "D" drive to open to try and use the system repair disc?

After you have loaded the repair disc, shut down the computer. Then power it up and press F12 to reach the boot-priority menu. Select the optical drive there.
What are the system recovery options in Windows 7?
If you can't boot from the repair disc, there's something wrong with the hardware, the BIOS, or the disc.

I used a Disk Warrior to rebuild my G4. When loading the program it wouldn't SU with the repair disc so I selected the Disc Warrior as my SU disk and repaired my hard drive but now I can't get the G4 to SU with anything but the repair disc. What do I do?

startup using the disc and the C key so I selected the Warrior as my startup disc, started up, repaired the disc and now I can't get the computer to startup on it's hard drive. It will only startup on the repair disc. What do I do to get back to normal?

I TRIED SEVERAL TIMES AND WASTED QUITE A FEW DVD'S.

Once downloaded the Window7 setup you then want to download the windows free burning app from the same thread.
Also visit the Microsoft website link below as has basic guidance that may help you.

Basically with the Windows free burning app you can make either a USB boot stick media of windows 7 or a good older fashioned DVD boot media. Repair Disc Permissions must run before I can open apps

Hi- I've been having a recurring problem over the last week: that an application suddenly won't open. After I've been to Disc Utility and run Repair Disc Permissions, it opens again....... and then perhaps a few hours later I have exactly the same problem and go through the same procedure !
Something must be wrong .................... but what ?
I've been surfing and looked at various apps for System Maintenenance and then found an extensive article in this forum which explained that normally, no extra maintenance is necessary.
So now I'm confused. And help to clarify matters would be much appreciated !
