Sorry about that, early morning CA time and lack of coffee chagrin and annoyance at systems in general.
64 bit operating system
7.89 useable Gigs of RAM
There are perhaps 600-700 pictures installed on the computer in total, but I suspect the point is that the program does not even get around to asking where I wish to locate the photos but preemptively dismisses the suggestion out of hand.

  • Help! Runtime error after Lightroom 1.1 install!

I installed v1.1 on a Win XP machine and now when I try to launch Lightroom I get only a message box:
    "Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library"
    "Runtime error!
    "Program: ...Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 1.1\lightroom.exe
"This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information."
I tried going back to a previous Windows restore point, but Lightroom 1.0 wouldn't run from there either!
    What do I do?

I had LR 1.0 working fine on my XP Pro machine - then I had a HD crash. On installing new & larger HD's (I had backups of all data/photos, etc) I set aside 1 of the new 500GB HD's just for photos and another drive just for my photo software applications.
I installed LR 1.1 this morning and received the runtime error.
A call to tech support and about 15 minutes of excellent Adobe support service solved the problem.
I had my .LRCAT file on the Photo HD and not in the My Pictures folder on my C:\ where it was looking for it.
The solution involved starting LR 1.1 and holding the Ctrl key down (I did mention it's a windows machine) This brought up a prompt panel that let me direct LR 1.1 to where the .LRCAT was located.
Problem Solved! Adobe support (I think the technicians name was Dave) worked just the way you would expect it to and my day became a lot brighter.

  • Runtime error in starting Lightroom

I receive the following message when I try to start Lightroom:

This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.

Lightroom ran well for several days and then failed to open with the above message.
I have tried everything I know to do (uninstalled and reinstalled the application, restored the computer to a restore point before Lightroom was originally installed, etc.) and do not know were to go from here. Suggestions would be appreciated.
I am using Windows XP sp2 and have 4 GB of ram and 250 GB of hard disk space.

  • Runtime Error when starting Lightroom

I'm currently on day 12 or so of my trial with Lightroom. I've spent quite a few hours getting to know LR by retouching and cataloging over 8 years of photos. So far, aside from a few in-program bugs that I found a way to work around, I've been super-happy with it (especially the powerful keywording/metatagging system: amazing!) and have been really seriously coughing up the huge wad of $$ when the trial's done. But....
For no reason, LR started giving me a Runtime Error when I tried to start it. Something along the lines of "This application requested Runtime to terminate it unusually."
So off to Google I went, where I knew I could probably search that error and fix it like I've done with countless other programs. Unfortunately nothing is working.
    Here are the facts:
--I'm running a fully patched Vista machine.
--LR worked fine earlier this morning. I had 1.4 and didn't perform any upgrades or maintenance to it (that I know of) when it just gave me the error out of the blue today when I tried to start it.
--I tried holding CTRL when I start it, and it still gives the error.
--I tried deleting a .lock file (which did exist) but it still wouldn't start.
--I tried running the "repair" tool in the install...no good.
--I uninstalled LR, d/led it again, and re-installed it. IT WORKED!....one time. I was able to run it, checked to make sure my cataloging was still intact (it was - phew!) and even deleted a folder I didn't want in it. Then I closed it. I tried re-opening it a few hours later and I got the SAME ERROR!
I sure hope someone can help because I'm at my wit's end.

This is disgusting. I've pounded away for over 4 hours and I finally found a workaround. Here's the original post that had my answer:

The short of the story: if I put lightroom.exe into Windows XP compatibility mode" it will work. (To do that, for anyone else who comes across this, you just right-click your lightroom icon, click PROPERTIES, and go to the Compatibility tab and check the box next to "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" and select "Windows XP (Service Pack 2)")
I've loaded it up half a dozen times and it's still working perfectly as far as I can tell. Hopefully it won't hurt anything keeping it in that mode.
I'm glad this happened early enough into my trial that I'll have ample opportunity to see if it repeats itself. I'm not keen on sinking $300 into software that will give me ulcers as I troubleshoot problems like this.

  • Lightroom 2 runtime error when trying to start up *URGENT ERROR*

I updated from 2.0 to 2.1 recently. Now everytime I try to start lightroom it will not, and i get a microsoft visual c++ runtime error and it immediately asks to close LR before it even opening.
I found 3 possible solutions on the adobe knowledge base. none of which work. Deleteing the preference files, deleting the preference folder, and trying to install LR under a different user account. I have Vista sp1 OS running on my computer. I have plenty of room and ram.
I even went as far as uninstalling LR and deleting all references to it in the registry. I just tried to reinstall 2.0 and open it with the same darned error. I am at my wits end as I have over 100 highschool kids composite protraits to churn out, and their adjustments are all stuck in a lightroom catalog that I can't open.
Any other solutions floating around about this that i haven't tried?????

Some more things in random order:
I think you're right about something deeper going on. The bad install for Flash sounds bad.
The C++ error sounds like it could be a missing file from something that didn't get installed right.
You might go buy yourself a new hard-drive, reinstall vista and see if you can get things to work, then, and either use that as your new boot drive or go back to the other one and try again.
Presumably ScanDisk doesn't show any problems?
You might disconnect all your USB drives and use just C and see if things work.
Do you have any permissions issues at all?
Look in event log and see if it says anything leading up to the C++ error.
Have you tried reseating the hard-drive cables and memory chips on your MB although usually these things would cause a blue-screen not a C++ error.
Remove any extra peripherals that you don't need.
Does the error you get indicate a recognizable GUI-related thing? If so perhaps changing the graphics-card acceleration or other settings could affect it.
After you system-restore back, are you then installing LR 2.1?
Why didn't it let you do a Restore and what did you do to finally get it to work?
This thread started pretty late at night, so the Adobe types are probably not reading things at this point and will have some ideas, tomorrow.

  • Lightroom 2 64 bit runtime error

I just got a new computer (its been a nightmare for two days now with VISTA) and installed Lightroom 2 and the updates to 2.3 for the 64 bit.  Now I try to run it and get a runtime error and it will not start at all.  The message says that Runtime has requested it terminate in an unusual way, and therefore it will not even open it.  Any one else with that problem, and able to solve it?

What exactly does the error say? Maybe you have a DLL that isn't registered properly and the error details will point towards a solution. LR 2.3 runs fine on my Vista x64 system.

  • Trying to start Lightroom 3 this morning and I'm receiving a "Runtime Error! This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusal way. Please contact the application's support team for more inforamtion." Has anyone experienced this befo

Didn't mention above but I have tried uninstalling and re-installing the program and I still receive the same error message.

Try looking at the entry " Runtime Error!  after installation of Photoshop a Elements 10..." Under "More like this" on the right of your question. It might help you.

I am using a current edition of Canon ZoomBrowser EX that was working perfectly until I took out the first CF card and inserted another.  I then got a "Runtime Error" message, which extended to "Memory Card Utility has stopped working."
Message also included "C:\Program Files (x86)\Canon\ZoomBrowser EXMCU\MCU.EXE" in case that helps.
I reinstalled a ZB update, tried again, same results.  Turned off the computer, and tried again some hours later -- same results.
Am using a PC, with Windows 7 64-bit professional.  Card reader is a Lexar Multi-card 24-in-one Reader, high speed USB 2.0.
Does anyone have any idea what is going on with this and how I can fix it?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

First, I would completely uninstall Zoom Browser.  You may need a clean-up utility to do this  Reinstall it and try again.
Try a different port.  You know simple little things to eliminate each component.
Another thing that you might try is a different computer to eliminate your computer as the problem.  And I would try a new memory card as they can become corrupted.

  • How to solve dreaded Microsoft Visual C ++  Runtime error?

    Hi,
This is my first post. Grrrrr!
I recently installed 2.5 after having 2.4 and 2.3 and everything has been running along great...until tonight.
When I tried to open 2.5 I get the following message:
"Microsoft Visual C ++  Runtime library
    Program C :/ prog
This application has requested the runtime to terminate in an unusual way. please contact the application's support team for more info"
I have checked out on line for a work around but there doesn't seem anything that makes clear sense....ie looking for a state-.dat file that doesn't seem to exist in my computer (PC vista xp).
I have also seen that holding down the cntrl button when opening Lightroom can overcome the problem, which it does, at least up until it asks me to create a new directory, but I have no idea what I'm supposed to do to create a new directory.
Another thing, I notice that in my program files that I have both 2.4 and 2.5...I don't know if that's behind the conflict.
    Many thanks,
    Adrian

I think you will find that the older LR folder is almost empty and so you'd have to reinstall 2.4 to get it running again and that wouldn't be the first thing to try.
A message about C++ Runtime error really doesn't indicate a particular problem but there are several possibilities:
    1)  Hard disk error or corruption where running a ScanDisk or ChkDsk or whatever it is called nowadays might help fix the problem.
    2)  Corrupt program files.  Reinstalling might fix that.
    3)  A corrupt catalog, where holding down Ctrl (or Alt) when starting up LR will allow you to create a new catalog or at least open a different one, which might work, and get you past the error.  Then you'd need to go to a backup catalog and redo all your work since then, where if you've been writing changes to XMP files, it would be a lot easier.
    4)  A corrupt preferences file.  Navigate to C:\Users\[yourusername]Steve\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Lightroom\Preferences and at least rename the whatever.agprefs file to whatever.agprefsX or something and then restart LR and see if things work differently.
    5)  An errant plug-in you've recently installed.
Item 4 might be the easiest to try and be the easiest to recover from, where all you'd need to do is re-adjust your settings, again, I think.
Item 3, a corrupt catalog, is also easy to test for, but recovery is more difficult.

  • Ps CS5 - Runtime error - which files need to be deleted ? -  if thats the fix

So I just went thru all this with Adobe Premiere, and now I will have to go thru it with Ps5.   I am getting the run time error in my  Ps CS 5 version 12.0.4  x64 , running on a PC window 7.
The program crashes immediately upon opening. With premier I had to go in and delete a preferences file, and then it worked again (Thanks to A.T. Romano for the fix) but I lost any
projects that were in the works. Anyone know how to fix the photoshop problem? And is it likely I will be going thru this with my Lightroom 3 as well?

    Thanks AC
No you never posted the information about your errors I was just answered your question about preferences. If you want to work on your errors
    Supply pertinent information
The more information you supply about your situation, the better equipped other community members will be to answer. Consider including the following in your question:
    Adobe product and version number
    Operating system and version number
The full text of any error message(s)
What you were doing when the problem occurred
    Screenshots of the problem
Computer hardware, such as CPU; GPU; amount of RAM; etc.

  • Elements 7 Runtime Error

    "Runtime Error!
    Program: ...Adobe\Photoshop Elements 7.0\PhotoshopElementsEditor.exe
This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.
Please contact the application's support team for more information."
It has worked great for a month. Got 2 books on Elements 7 for Christmas and now it crashes as per above, whenever I open a photo. It does not crash until I open a photo.
Running Vista Ultimate SP1. Since I last used the program I updated the PhysiX driver, and installed a game called "Ship Simulator 2008".
I will try rolling back the driver. Not sure what else to do. I uninstalled and reinstalled the software, with no luck. Suggestions? This is so disappointing!
    Thank you!

It's back!!!!!  Both Elements 7.0 and Lightroom 2.4 are crashing.  I have been using them heavily the last couple weeks going through the 1000's of photos I have colleced over the last few years.  Suddenly, "Adobe Photoshop Elements (Editor) has stopped working."  I installed no software, updated no software, installed no drivers.  I went through all the steps I went through last time, including reinstalling with the anti-virus software disabled, without suceess.  I ran the "licensing repair tool" (for CS3?) three times.  I am not running Microsoft Intellimouse.  I really do not want to do an OS re-install as everything else is and always has run very solidly.  Running Vista 32 bit.  I will probably install a new Solid State Drive with Windows 7 when it comes out as a dual boot and slowly migrate everything over to it, but I can use some more suggestions in the mean time!  Is PSE Version 8 around the corner??
Update:  Lightroom 2.4 is working great....
Update #2:  I followed the procedures I saw to do a complete cleaning of Elements.  Well, I did a complete one alright.  Removed PSE 7, Premiere Elements 7, Lightroom 2.4, and Reader.  Went into the Registry and killed any reference to Adobe, then into the Windows Explorer and killed any reference to Adobe in the /applications and /user folders.  Then I emptied the trash and rebooted.  I then used AusLogics Registry Defrag and rebooted.  I just re-installed Elements 7 and it works!!
This is certainly challenging, but I beat the hell out of Elements and Lightroom so it is worth it!

Everything was fine till one day, inexplicably, I got a
    "Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library

To fix the issue, I just navigated to my Lightroom directory where my LR catalog stuff resides and promptly renamed a file (in my case) "Lightroom Catalog.lrc.lock" to some junk value and then restarted LR.
I guess one could simply delete the above lock file one things are up and running again.
