Runtime,waitFor and exitValue() methods:child programm never return

Sorry,my english is really bad!
i do a programm with tests all the night different java programms.
I have to compile and after run it.
My problem is that even if the output and error streams are displayed,each time i have a big programm,the child process always stay blocked.
I decided to use the dos command ....>>Results.txt to store the datas.
But the problem is that the wait for and exitvalue methods never returns.

Hi,
you must provide a way to read not only the error stream (>>) but also the output stream (>). You can make it from java too. Something like this:
Runtime rt = java.lang.Runtime.getRuntime();
Process proc = rt.exec(cmd, null, workdir);
int inp;
while ((inp = proc.getInputStream().read()) != -1) {
  System.out.write(inp);
int err;
while ((err = proc.getErrorStream().read()) != -1) {
  System.out.write(err);
proc.waitFor();Best regards,
Martin

  • Runtime.exec and exitValue

    hi all,
    i know about the miolion of topics about this object, but i've a question a little bit more specific.
    I have a part of my code that needs to launch external command . I want to save the output of these commands, but i have to minimize the number of thread spawned. In addtion, i cannot know the number of command launched, so the thread number will became an important factor to bound.
    At the same time i need to write something at the end of the output file, so i need to know when the process launched has terminated.
    What i did:
    //  main
    //  here create a thread for process control
    //   procControlThread
    public void launchCommand(String cmd, String file, long ID){
      Process p  = Runtime.exec(cmd+" 1 >> "+file);
       procControlThread.addObj(p,file).
    // in the procControlThread
    public void addObj(Process p, String file){
         synchronized(struct){
              storeSomeWhere(p,file);
    public void run(){
       Iterator i;
      while(boolean){
         synchronized(struct){
            i=struct.iterator();
             while(i.hasNext()){
                MyObj o = (MyObj)i.next();
                 int exitCode;
                  try{
                    exitCode=o.getProcess().exitValue()
                   }catch(IllegalThreadStateException e){
                          // process has not yet finished
                         continue;
                    // process has finished
                    // print in the file where is logged
                   //  the stdout fo the command
                    printSomething(o.getFile(),exitCode);
                     remove(o);
           Thread.sleep(10*1000);
    // where printSomething
    // create  a Printwriter using a FileOutputStream.well, sometimes i get FileNotFoundException in the printSomething where is mentioned that the file is currently owned by another process.
    do I miss something in the exit code?
    I should using Process.WaitFor()? [ in this case I have to create one thread for controlling one process!]
    -- jdk 1.3.1
    Really thanks in advance.
    T.

    Seems like it should work. Obviously the code you posted is not the same as what you're running though (as it can't compile e.g. while (boolean)), so I'd wonder about what you're really doing.

  • Dynamic creation of class and calling methods

    I've got and interface called Transformation and then two implementations called TxA and TxB, where TxA and TxB have their own attribtues and setter and getters for these attributes.
    The question is, I need to create instances of TxA and TxB and called the setter and getters where I at runtime I only know the attribute to set, how can I create and instance and call the right getters and setters methods?
    Thanks in advance

    Smart money says your design sucks and needs to be rethought entirely. Can we get specifics?

  • HashSet get() and contains() methods, by value or reference?

    All the tutorials I've seen on HashSets use Strings as the object type. With Strings, it seems the get() and contains() methods work by value, not by reference.
    <CODE>
    String s1 = "dog";
    String s2 = "cat";
    String s3 = "dog";
    HashSet<String> set = new HashSet<String>();
    set.add(s1);
    System.out.println(set.contains(s1)); //true;
    System.out.println(set.contains(s2)); //false
    System.out.println(set.contains(s3)); //true
    </CODE>
    But when I use a custom object, it works by reference:
    <CODE>
    MyClass c1 = new MyClass("dog", 1);
    MyClass c2 = new MyClass("cat", 1);
    MyClass c3 = new MyClass("dog", 2);
    MyClass c4 = new MyClass("dog", 1);
    HashSet<MyClass> myClassSet = new HashSet<MyClass>();
    myClassSet.add(c1);
    System.out.println(myClassSet.contains(c1)); //true
    System.out.println(myClassSet.contains(c2)); //false
    System.out.println(myClassSet.contains(c3)); //false
    System.out.println(myClassSet.contains(c4)); //false
    </CODE>
    ("MyClass" is a simple class that holds a String and an int).
    Is there any way I can get the set to select by value rather than reference for objects that aren't String?
    If so, is it possible that the value test could be customised, so that, for example, the above will return true if the String in MyClass is the same, regardless of the int value?

    Is there any way I can get the set to select by value rather than reference for objects that aren't String?Warning: Never use the term "by reference" around Java geeks. It makes 'em go all green at the gills and they start muttering about 'bloody C++ crossovers'.
    However, as DrClap pointed out, you've mis-diagnosed the problem:
    System.out.println(s1 == s1);
    System.out.println(s1 == s2);
    System.out.println(s1 == s3));would print out the exact same results.
    For an explanation why, Google "Java String pool" or try [url http://stackoverflow.com/questions/3297867/difference-between-string-object-and-string-literal]here.
    If so, is it possible that the value test could be customised, so that, for example, the above will return true if the String in MyClass is the same, regardless of the int value?Absolutely. But, as others have said, you'd need to override equals() and hashCode().

  • Code for replacing 'get' and 'set' method

    Hi,
    I was a struts programmer but now i am a jsf programmer :-)
    I was able to do the following with struts but no with jsf...
    The following code in struts allowed me to have no 'get' and 'set' method in the javabean for a property (for example, the property 'name'):
    ValueStack valueStack =ActionContext.getContext().getValueStack();
    valueStack.set("name", "John");
    ActionContext.getContext().setValueStack(valueStack);In the jsp, using the corresponding label to retrieve the 'name' property, returned value 'John'.
    Is there something equivalent in jsf?

  • What is the diffreence between call transaction and session method

    hi gurus
    can any one suggest me
    what is the difference between call transaction and session methods
    in which cases we have to use teh call transaction and
    in which cases we have to use session method.
    thank you
    regards
    kals.

    CLASSICAL BATCH INPUT (Session Method)
    CALL TRANSACTION
    BATCH INPUT METHOD:
    This method is also called as &#8216;CLASSICAL METHOD&#8217;.
    Features:
    Asynchronous processing.
    Synchronous Processing in database update.
    Transfer data for more than one transaction.
    Batch input processing log will be generated.
    During processing, no transaction is started until the previous transaction has been written to the database.
    CALL TRANSACTION METHOD :
    This is another method to transfer data from the legacy system.
    Features:
    Synchronous processing. The system performs a database commit immediately before and after the CALL TRANSACTION USING statement.
    Updating the database can be either synchronous or asynchronous. The program specifies the update type.
    Transfer data for a single transaction.
    Transfers data for a sequence of dialog screens.
    No batch input processing log is generated.
    http://www.sap-img.com/abap/difference-between-batch-input-and-call-transaction-in-bdc.htm
    Among the two methods call transaction is better compared to session bcoz data transfer is faster in it.
    Differences between call transaction and session.
    Session Method:
    1) Data is not updated in the database table until the session is processed.
    2) No sy-subrc is returned.
    3) Error log is created for error records.
    4) Updation is always synchronous.
    Call Transaction Method:
    1) Immediate updation in the database table.
    2) sy-subrc is returned.
    3)Error need to be handled explicitly.
    4) updation can be synchronous as well as asynchronous.
    2) ya u can use using the N mode no screen.
    3)u can't handle multiple transaction in call transaction.
    4) u can handle multiple transaction in session using the BDC_INSERT fm.
    5)When u go to SM35 u can able to see the error records.
    Which is best?
    That depends on your requirement. Both of them have there advantages.
    According to the situation u can choose any one of these.
    difference between batch input and call transaction in BDC Session method.
    1) synchronous processing.
    2) can tranfer large amount of data.
    3) processing is slower.
    4) error log is created
    5) data is not updated until session is processed.
    Call transaction.
    1) asynchronous processing
    2) can transfer small amount of data
    3) processing is faster.
    4) errors need to be handled explicitly
    5) data is updated automatically
    For session method,these are the function modules to b used.
    BDC_OPEN_GROUP
    BDC_INSERT
    BDC_CLOSE_GROUP
    For call transaction,this is the syntax.
    CALL TRANSACTION TCODE USING BDCDATA
    MODE A or E or N
    UPDATE A or S
    MESSAGES INTO MESSTAB.
    Take a scenario where we need to post documents in FB01 and the input file has say 2000 records (2000 documents, not line items in FB01 but 2000 records)
    In the BDC call transaction method
    We call the transaction FB01 2000 times (once for each record posting) and if the processing fails in record no 3 it can be captured and start with reocord 4.
    Eg: Loop at itab.
    call transaction FB01
    capture errors
    endloop.
    In the session method.
    We do not explicity call the transaction 2000 times, but all the records are appeneded into a session and this session is stored. The processinf of the session is done wwhenever the user wants it to be done. Hence the errors cannot be captured in the program itself

    http://www.sap-img.com/abap/question-about-bdc-program.htm
    http://www.itcserver.com/blog/2006/06/30/batch-input-vs-call-transaction/
    http://www.planetsap.com/bdc_main_page.htm
    Batch Input Session method is asynchronous as told by others here. But the advantage of this is that you have all the error messages and the data for each transaction held persistantly. You don't have to code anything for processing them or writing the logs.
    But at the same time, the same feature can be disadvantageous if you need to react to an error or if there are too many errors to manually correct in a session. Since the session are created in the program and its execution is done seperately, you loose the trackability of such transactions.
    With a call transaction, what was a disadvantage above will become an advantage. Call transaction immediately gives you messages back and you can react to it in your program. But the disadvantage is that, if you have several hundreds of transactions to run, running them from within the program can be resource crunching affair. It will hamper the system performance and you cannot really distribute the load. Of course, you have some mechanisms with which you can overcome this, but you will have to code for it. Also, storing the messages and storing the errored transaction data etc will have to be handled by you in the program. Whereas, in batch input session, your program's job is to just create the session, after that everything is standard SAP system's responsibility.
    Ideally, you should do a call transaction if the resources are not a problem and if it fails, put the errored transaction into a session.
    You can decide based on the data volume that your BDC is processing. If data volume is high go for session else call transaction will do.The call transaction updates will be instantaneous where as session needs to be processed explictly after creation.
    Session Method
    1) Session method supports both small amount of data aswell as large amount of data
    2) data processing is asynchronus and data updation is synchronus.
    3) it process multiple apllication while perfomaning validations.
    4) in session method data will be updated in data base only after processing session only.
    5) system provide by default logfile for handling error records.
    6) it supports both foreground aswell as background process
    in bdc we use FM ...
    bdc_open_group " for creating Session
    bdc_insert " adding transaction and bdcdata table for updating database
    bdc_close_group " for closing Session
    Call Transaction
    1) Call transaction exclusively for small amout of data
    2) it supports only one apllication while perfoming validations
    3) there is no default logfile, We can explicitly provide logic for creating logfile for handling error records.
    we can create logfile by using structure....BDCMSGCOLL
    4) it doesn't support background processing.
    5) data processing is synchronous and Data updation is Synchronous( default), in
    this method also supports daya updation in asynchronus process also.
    syntax:
    Call transaction <transaction-name> using BDCDATA
    mode <A/N/E>
    update <L/A/S>
    messages into BDCMSGCOLL.
    BDC:
    Batch Data Communication (BDC) is the process of transferring data from one SAP System to another SAP system or from a non-SAP system to SAP System.
    Features :
    BDC is an automatic procedure.
    This method is used to transfer large amount of data that is available in electronic medium.
    BDC can be used primarily when installing the SAP system and when transferring data from a legacy system (external system).
    BDC uses normal transaction codes to transfer data.
    Types of BDC :

  • JTree cut and paste multiple child and ancestor nodes not function correct

    Hello i'm creating a filebrowser for multimedia files (SDK 1.22) such as .jpg .gif .au .wav. (using Swing, JTree, DefaultMutableTreeNode)
    The problem is I want to cut and paste single and multiple nodes (from current node til the last child "top-down") which partly functions:
    single nodes and multiple nodes with only one folder per hierarchy level;
    Not function:
    - multiple folders in the same level -> the former order gets lost
    - if there is a file (MMed. document) between folders (or after them) in the same level this file is put inside one of those
    I tried much easier functions to cope with this problem but every time I solve one the "steps" the next problem appears...
    The thing I don't want to do, is something like a LinkedList, Hashtable (to store the nodes)... because the MMed. filebrowser would need to much resources while browsing through a media library with (e.g.) thousands of files!
    If someone has any idea to solve this problem I would be very pleased!
    Thank you anyway by reading this ;)

    You need to use a recursive copy method to do this. Here's a simple example of the copy. To do a cut you need to do a copy and then delete the source.

  • Reading InputStream from Runtime.exec() and ffmpeg?

    I've got a lot of things going on here and I'm having trouble debugging. I'm working on a streaming music player, and the platform only handles MP3 natively. Specifically, the method that handles incoming requests has to return an InputStream for further processing upstream (out of my visibility).
    I'm trying to extend the music player to play AAC files with the extension ".m4a". To do this, my plan is to transcode from MP3 to AAC using Runtime.exec() and ffmpeg, and then return an InputStream that contains the MP3. This works fine if I use ffmpeg to transcode to a temp file, and then return a FileInputStream constructed from that temp file. But like I said, this is supposed to be a steaming music player, and the blocking for the ~30 seconds it takes to completely transcode to a file is too much of a delay.
    So what I'm trying to do is have ffmpeg transcode to stdout, and then use Process.getInputStream() to return the InputStream that contains ffmpeg's stdout while the transcoding is still going on. This doesn't work and I'm not sure why. (I'm fairly new to java, and this is the first time I've used Runtime.) My player just hangs there. I know Runtime is picky about exhausting the stdout and stderr streams, so I'm not sure if it's something related to that, or if I somehow need to buffer the stdout before returning it, or if I need to run something in a different thread, or if I'm just completely barking up the wrong tree.
    If anyone has any experience with something like this, or can point me at some code that implements something similar, I'd appreciate the help.
    Below a sample of the code in question. Also, for what it's worth, all of the console messages that I put in there are printing, but the music doesn't play.
       public InputStream getStream(String uri) throws IOException
                 System.out.println("Entering Factory.getStream()");

    I am attempting to pass this textTicket object to a shell script that will send it out the port for printing. I have tried using the Java Comm API however, we have intermittent problems with the API running on an Oracle Appserver. Sometimes, the data never gets sent to the port. So what I am trying to do is just call a shell script that echos the textTicket out the port via redirection. The problem arise when I use the ProcessBuilder or runtime exec and I have to convert the textTicket to a string via textTicket.toString. The textTicket then losing all of its formatting. Any ideas on how to keep the formatting as I am passing the textTicket to the shell script.

    My example did not save into the post very well. For instance, the first line "Cross Plains Quarry" should be center on the paper. The object contains \t\t to get it center.
    For example on the runtime.exec, I am doing the following
    public void printShell(String port, String string){
         String[] params={"/usr/ts/bin/prttick.sh", string, port};
         try {
                   Process p=Runtime.getRuntime().exec(params);
              } catch (IOException e) {
                   // TODO Auto-generated catch block
                   SerialCommunicator.logger.debug("error" + e.getMessage());
    The variable string is textTicket.toString();

  • Runtime.exec and setting environment variables

    Runtime.exec and setting environment variables
    I need a decent example which works on Windows.
    Got any?

    Thank you.
    I was hoping for an example of the use of
    http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.1/docs/api/java/lang/Runti
    e.html#exec(java.lang.String,%20java.lang.String[]) or
    http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.1/docs/api/java/lang/Runti
    e.html#exec(java.lang.String,%20java.lang.String[],%20j
    va.io.File) which take environment variable
    information such as PATH.
    The reason is because there is a library which is
    being loaded via loadLibrary (
    http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.1/docs/api/java/lang/Syste
    .html#loadLibrary(java.lang.String) ). However, for
    the child process to find the library the PATH needs
    to be updated.
    Any example regarding changing the PATH variable via
    Java so that libraries can be loaded and processes
    created? (Perhaps, I should make a new post and
    restate the question with this more explicit
    information?)
    That won't work. LoadLibrary occurs in the JVM environment. As I said you can't change the JVM environment via exec().
    If the shared library needs something in the path then you are going to have to set the path before your application starts up.
    If you just need to load the library from someplace that is not on the path then you should be using System.load().

  • Regarding setter and getter methods

    Hi,
    Can anybody tell me the use of setter and getter methods in webdynpro .
    It is generated when we set the calculate property of value attribute to true .
    Thanks a lot .

    Hi Jain
    <b>setter</b> and <b>getter </b>functions will be created when you set the calculated propertyto true
    Consider the following scenario where in you can get some basic idea
    1) First insert a Child "Image" UI Element
    2) Create a Context in a view in which you are using Image UI Element
    3) Value Node
    Name : Image
    Cardidality : 1..1
    4) create 2 Value Attributes
    4)a ImageAlt (Calculate property - true) //this will create getter and setter methods
    4)b ImageSrc (Calculate property - true) //this will create getter and setter methods
    5)Bind the properties of Image
    alt - Image.ImageAlt
    source - Image.ImageSrc
    6) in getImageSrc()
    retrun "XX.gif"
    7) in getImageAlt()
    return "Image Not Available"
    you can even achieve getter and setter methods by doing the following procedure
    goto <b>implementation</b> tab-> rightclick -> <b>source</b> -> <b>generate Getter and Setter methods...</b>
