Russian Roulette with Computer programs

Not sure where the best place is to post this. The trouble started when I upgraded to Tiger from Panther several months ago. I do not remember which method I used to upgrade it.
I noticed it with Firefox and Thunderbird the most, but also Extensis Suitcase X1, Adobe Photoshop CS2 and iPhoto 4. they would crash randomly. it has slowly gotten worse, and is not limited to those programs. I performed all the updates my software had to offer, and it never fixed it.
It is a form of russian roulette, it is not a matter of if a program will quit, it is a matter of which one. It just tells me the program has quit, do I want to restart it. Sometimes, it takes out Tiger.
I had initially thought it was Tiger's fault, now I'm not so sure. I reinstalled the OS, full wipe and reinstall. The computer crashed while reinstalling adobe CS2. I ran a hardware check (the one that came on the panther disks with the computer). it said there was nothing wrong with my hardware.
If I turn the computer off for the night, it will have issues. It gives me the startup noise, then nothing. just black. If I leave it there for 5-10 minutes and restart the computer will, otherwise, any attempts to restart end futilely.
It sounds like it might be an issue with my hardware, but???
I'd prefer any methods that do not involve transporting this thing initially. I will if I have to, but I do not own a car.

Try using Disk Utility to repair your startup disk (hard drive) as shown in Dr.Smokes repair thread. Then Repair Permissions just in case.
If that does'nt do it, check out his Unexpectedly Quiting link. Try the repair first though.

Playing Russian Roulette with Firewire 400 drives and Final Cut Pro

oh boy! this has been a fun week!
I would love to ask the advice of the group about checking the firwire
ports on my computer, and also on the separate external drives.
Here is what has been going on.
Final Cut Pro 5 starts up and then starts to pinwheel.
but in short here is the result, I have recently lost 2 external
FIREWIRE 400 drives, one by LaCie that is my newest drive of the
group, it is 160gb 2 port FW400, and another by ProMax which also has
2 FW400 ports. the lacie was the first to go and is just not mounting
and does not show up using any of my Disk Utility software (even the
heavy duty stuff like DATA RESCUE II or Disk Warrior), I am thinking
that both ports are bad(maybe fried by another bad port on my tower?)I
can hear it when i boot it up and it sounds normal with the same
routine sounds, but it just doesn't mount, nor show up, so is this the
ports?fried?
Now, on my tower I have the following setup - 2 FW400 ports that are
STOCK that came with the TOWER G4 when I bought it. There is also a
FIREWIRE 400 card which has 3 ports. In the past I have used all the
ports for drives, and for a printer and a scanner in my studio.
Everything mounted and worked properly. Then,recently I moved the
drives and the tower to another location(in the room and no I didn't
drop or shake anything) and replugged everything in again, probably in
different slots but upon boot the external firewire drives didn't mount.
I had to UN PLUG them and then RE INSERT them by trial and error(which
I thought normal as I have done this when using these drives with my
laptop, until I got them to mount. they all did mount. However, once
up an running I started Final Cut Pro 5, and it started to get a
PINWHEEL for more than reasonable and if forced me to RESTART the
computer.
The next time, one of the HARDDRIVES (the LaCie 160gb) was no longer
mounting, and I tried to change firewire ports and on the stock and
also on the card for fear that the 3rd party card might be faulty.
I even ran APPLEs HARDWARE Utility and it gave no results as to
anything faulty on the firewire ports. It just said they were there.
Both stock and the PCI firewire card.
Next, I tried to mount this LaCie 160gb onto another computer, with no
results.....it now acts as if both ports are faulty, again, I hear the
drive spinning and going through its initial startup, which sounds
exactly like the other drive, but it never mounts. which is odd...what
is your idea about this drive? and how to save it?
is there a way to take the drive out of the casing and test it in my
other LaCie160gb that is currently working?
2nd, this is where it gets funky, then upon starting Final Cut Pro,
the pinwheel reappeared now with another firewire drive a PROMAX 160gb
that was plugged into the STOCK FW 400 port (on the tower) starting to
show a RED light(not good), however, after restart, I didn't see the
PROMAX drive mount, but I was able to load it up with DATA RESCUE II,
and it is doing a QUICK SCAN to save the DATA on that disk......
now I have backed up most of this data, but the problem now is not the
data, it is whether or not to even plug any of my other drives into
any of these FW ports until I can test them for faultiness.
A friend told me of another friend having a problem where a firewire
port was frying drives as soon as they plugged them into the certain
port. How can you figure this out without re-acting like 'Deerhunter?'
This feels like playing Russian Roulette......if you get my drift?
How do you check any ports for such foul play?

well, now I am finding out that the culprit is I think the POWER MAC g4 itself.
For it has been blowing the firewire ports over time by frying them with power.
Has anyone had this happen?
My Power Mac g4 will not shut down.
It powers itself back up.
I end up having to press the POWER button and holding it, but this sends power to the firewire ports and I can hear them turning on.
so all this time I had just dealt with the issue
Apple had seemed to blame it on a 3rd party MATROX card in the PCI slot.
But, now that has long been taken out of the equation.
The only thing left is that the 17inch MONITOR is plugged into the POWER MAC and for some reason it is keeping a charge?
Can anyone help me in this matter?
As this has haunted me for 5 years with this machine, and I have probably fried more drives than I care to mention.
I just want my computer to SHUT DOWN when I tell it to.
is that too much to ask?
Might the POWER SUPPLY be at fault?
What in God's name could keep this ******* of a computer from shutting down?
I have no USB hubs or keyboards hookedup
the only thing is the MONITOR itself....that you can press its button to shut down etc.
I would be honored to know what this is as APPLE CARE never could figure it out
I didn't want to go through the hassle of taking out the RT MAC card, and just either left the machine on, or Unplugged the thing....
that is a nasty way to shut down a computer is it not?

Streaming video display in v.5 and v.6 is monochrome and distored while Ffox help indicates need to update Nvidia driver that is NOT supported by HP; so is there a Ffox fix or do I play Russian roulette with unapproved Nvidia driver updates?

For reference, this is HP PC laptop with AMD Turion64 running Windows 7 Home Premium 32 bit with 2G memory and Nvidia Go 6500 series chip. Streaming videos from sites like Comedy Network work in basic format (showing color etc.) but when made full screen are monochrome and distorted (i.e. fill 2/3 page). Current driver number from Nvidia is in the 1.8x range while Ffox and Nvidia show a newer driver that is in the 2.x range but Nvidia warns that drivers should be approved by notebook manufacturer. Since Ffox 4 and previous worked fine, why the problem with Ffox 5 and 6?

Possibly there is another reason why the notebook crashes.
First of all you should check if new OS installation would help you on many cases the OS hangs or does not response due to damage registry entries or system files
If the notebook will still crash after new OS installation then you should check if it could be related to a higher temperature inside the notebook
Higher temperature could be one of the main reasons for such problems.
Usually you could avoid a higher temperature by cleaning the cooling fans and grilles You could use a compressed air spray in order to remove the dust and debris
Otherwise the notebook should be checked by an ASP technician I mean the G50 is one of the newest notebooks series and the warranty should be still valid so everything should be done for free!!

Mavericks seems to play Russian Roulette with my ext. monitor

When it wakes up from sleep, it often reconfigures the settings to my external monitor. It forces me to restart in order to get the configuration right. Very frustrating. Using a MacBook and Dell monitor. This problem is only in Mavericks. Never had a problem before. It is so annoying that I once went back to my old Mountain Lion. But in doing so, I lose what I need Mavericks to do.
Any solutions?

This is not a hardware or connector problem. It is something that only happens since installing Mavericks. I have been using the same monitor, standard connector, and MB for more than three years without a hitch. It has something to do with the way Mavericks sees the monitor, and only is a problem after sleep. Its and not mine.
But to provide more info: My MB is mostly closed, though occasionally open. There is no correlation with wheter or not it is open or closed. The setting on the Dell 2009W monitor is: 1280 X 800. I use the standard connector that came with my MB.
When I went back to the previous OS, the problem disappeared. But I need Mavericks. Yes, I can live with the annoying condition, but it is annoying.

I tried that and that is what initially started this. I wanted a new wallpaper for my home screen and it didn't work so I reset it. The wallpaper is now zoomed in, I can't zoom it back out, and I can't change it to the new one I want. Plus, recently I had reset it and it stayed at the Appe logo and didn't move and I got scared that I'd never be able to use it again, I tried random things and it turned on again. I think I was just lucky so I don't want it to happen again. And yes I did look up how to fix it but it was really complicated so I just did what I mentioned.

I tracked down the problem with the download and installation, my windows 7 was missing a file and after reinstalling windows everything worked out. The first 32 bit program in their list was used. I hope this can help others.

Russian roulette to check yahoo mail?

Is it me or is it like playing russian roulette when you want to check your yahoo e mail now a days? Also what about these pop up advertisements in screen it's like I can't even click on a listing on e bay.com anymore. Plus it seems as if all of these pop ups in screen are taking up all of hte CPU usage before the listed items can load up so you have to reload pages at least 2 times in a row. What's up with that? I purchased a Macbook Pro 17inch to avoid unwanted stuff online not to sign up for more junk. My old Windows Vista cpu is doing better than my Apple now! Fore real though, what's up with that?

When I try to zoom the text of an e-mail I received or sent , I can no longer use the keys Command + to enlarge the text, although I can reduce it with Command -.
As I have a problem with my eyes, This is a serious matter for me.
When I write an e-mail, if I select text and press Command +, it just displaces the text to the right.
Now, my husband has a USB keyboard. If he connects it to my computer, his regular Command + does not work either, but he uses the extended keyboard, then it works. Unfortunately, he needs it for a musical application which does not work with a wireless keyboard.

Firefox 3.6.4 and 3.6.6 use a process called, "plugin-container.exe" which was using up most of my CPU when I opened up multiple tabs that contained Adobe Flash files, and caused Firefox to lock up.
My solution was to use Firefox 3.5.10 which you can get from the Mozilla website at [http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html]
I am using Adobe Flash 10.1.53.64 without any problem in this version of Firefox. Check the release notes, I believe it contains all the latest security fixes in "Firefox 3.6.4".
Hopefully, they will fix Firefox 3.6 in the next version (e.g. Firefox 3.6.7), until then you should probably use "Firefox 3.5.10".

Value of New iBook G4 Value with extra programs???

I wanted to know if anyone could tell me how much I could get for my iBook G4 its about 4 months old, the extra programs it has are:
-Microsoft Office 2004
-Adobe Creative Suite 2-Illustrator CS2, In Design CS2, Go Live CS2, Photoshop CS2, Version Cue CS2, and Adobe Bridge.
-plus the regular programs that came with the computer.
I wanted to sell it and put the money toward a new PowerBook G4 Titanium for my school stuff, I paid a lot of money for the Adobe program and I wanted to know the value of the computer with the programs installed on the computer. Would I be able to still install Adobe to my new computer without any problems? If anyone knows please let me know. Thanks.

For the iBook, check on eBay and see what others are going for. You can also check Apple's web page for refurbished equipment and see what they are going for there. Between the two you should be able to figure out what the market for it is.
As for the software. No you can't sell the software installed on the computer and then install it on your new one. You have two choices, delete the software from the computer and keep it for your new PowerBook or provide the buyer with the media, licenses, and documentation when you sell it. You really have to dig through each license agreement to find out what you can and can't do with it. If you got any of the software through educational discounts, there may be additional limitations as to what you can do with it.

I've sold one Macbook and two minis on ebay with no problem. I always use Paypal and only ship to a Paypal verified address. On each sale I got just about what I paid for the macs minus Paypals cut. Selling to a live person for cash may sound good but you're letting someone know you have an expensive laptop at your home and that might bring the wrong person. I have sold on eBay for several years (feedback 300+) and have never been scammed. People try of course, you always get the emails asking where you are and can they come by. Or you get the offer to buy your laptop for $500 more than it's worth IF you send them the laptop via their fedex account and they pay on receipt. NOT! If you sell on eBay use Paypal and ship to verified address sellers are covered too for problems with sales. Good luck in selling your Mac you should get a good price.
