RV042 portforwarding question

Hi everybody,
I have simple question:
I plan to buy RV042, cause I want to manage 2 WAN (PPPoE, cable) in load balancing mode and I have recently bought similar devices, they doesn't work correctly. So, I want to ensure with some experienced owner of this router: does portforwarding work OK with 2 WAN?
Some of similar routers, the allow only <WAN1>:22 => <sshserver>:22 or <WAN2>..., but not both at the same time.
Additional question: can I configure outgoing services, by port definition, handled by concrette WAN? (and the rest in load balancing model)
I have tried fingout these information in user guide, but these screenshots are tiny to read something usefull from theme.
Thanks a lot.
J.C.

"Hi Aaron,
To  clarify, the 172 subnet of the Vendor is located at the same site as  the Main office?  Or is there another VPN tunnel between the Main Office  and the Vendor?
If  there is another physical location for the Vendor, is configuring  another IPSec VPN tunnel from the Remote Office and the Vendor?  Or is  what your trying to accomplish to go through the Remote Office to Main  Office VPN, then through the Main Office to Vendor Office VPN?
If you could provide a diagram, that would be great.
Thanks!
Dave"
-The vendor's subnet is at their location (not sure where they are located).  We have two VPN connections on that RV04: the one to the remote location and the one for the vendor.  I thought about configuring another connection to just connect the remote location up to the vendor, but they are trying to get us off of that and go to a t1 line (which may solve my problem).
But yes, what I was trying to accomplish was:
Remote-> (VPN) -> Main Office -> (VPN) -> Vendor
I talked to a friend of mine and he said I would have to setup hair pinning on that and he didnt think that it was possible on the RV042.  I did a little checking on it and I don't think that it's possible either (but I could be wrong).  I checked into connecting up the second WAN interface on the RV042 but we are out of public addresses.  What I thought about doing is setting the vpn connection from the remote site to the main office to use WAN2 so that it wouldn't be hair pinning, but there are no more addresses.

  • RV042 portforwarding overrule firewall rule?

We have a setup where our e-mail server is hosted in-house.
Our network is connected through a RV042 gateway.
Port 25 is forwarded to our internal e-mail server.
Our smtp service should be limited to receiving incomming connections only from 4 specific ip ranges which I set up in the firewall rules.
The reason is that all smtp is managed and protected by an external anti-spam/vires provider.
However it looks like any computer is able to connect to our port 25 and be forwarded to our e-mail server.
Does portforwarding overrule firewall rules - ie. you can not limit access with the firewall if you decide to port forward?
Is this a "fixable" situation - or is the RV042 not built for handling this setup?

The above link did not really help.
The default rules seems not to be honored when adding portforwarding.
We have from IP ranges (from our SMTP anti-spam/anti-virus provider) that should be allowed to access our SMTP server.
What I did (that did not work) was :
    1. Added port forwarding on WAN1 port 25 to LAN SMTP server port 25
    2. Added 4 rules to allow for the 4 IP ranges to accept connection
    3. Tested from the 4 ip ranges if connection was accepted and mail delivery was possible - checked OK
    4. Tested from outside the 4 ip ranges if connection was accepted and mail delivery was possible... IT WAS POSSIBLE TO CONNECT
The fix was to add a rule after the 4 smtp accept rules to deny all access to port 25.
What this indicates to me is that the default deny rule that deny all traffic on WAN1 was not honored on port forwarding.

  • RV042 VPN Connection Questions

    Hello,
I have successfully connected two RV042s to establish a VPN gateway to VPN gateway connection. I have the follow questions, please comment:
    1. I would like to keep the VPN tunnel connection time indefinite. Is it sufficient by checking the "Keep-Alive" box on the VPN -> Gateway To Gateway -> Advance page? Or, I have to ping the RV042 periodically?
    2. Do the "Phase 1/Phase 2 SA Life Time" (on VPN -> Gateway To Gateway page) settings have any impact on keeping the VPN connection time indefinite? What are the optimal values for them?
    3. Is there an API, command, or script to replace a manual clicking on the "CONNECT" button to establish the VPN tunnel from the VPN -> Summary page? Or, is there a way to accomplish this at power up?
    4. Is there a way to establish a VPN tunnel without going through login and clicking the "CONNECT" button? (Auto connect at power up?)
Thank you in advance for the comments.
    Steve

    Hi, Mike,
I did not do any extensive testings on the RV042s, but I did the following things to my RV042s:
    1. Enabled the "Keep-Alive" feature  (see Administration Guide, page 128),
    2. Enabled the "Dead Peer Detection" feature and set the interval to 10 seconds. (see Administration Guide, page 129).
Make sure you save the changes.
These features are available below the "Advanced" button under the VPN selection. I hope this help.
You can power down the router or disconnect the network to verify the result. The VPN tunnel should be re-established and stay connected.

  • RV042 questions

    Hi
I have a client in a single location with around 30 employees. They currently have Covad full T1 and VOIP running through a couple of Cisco managed switches. Right now I have them using a Netgear FVS114, which is pretty stable. I connect through an IPSec tunnel for admin purposes.
Their T1 seems to have occasional outages, and at 1.5Mb is often saturated. I'd like to get them on a dual-WAN system with a DSL supplier (probably AT&T), and wanted to know if the RV042 would be a good fit for their situation. I have a couple of questions for anyone who has experience with this setup.
    1) Will it work happily with the VOIP service I have on one of the connections? Can I do any kind of QOS/bandwidth management with this unit, or should I in fact leave the VOIP QOS to Cisco's management?
    2) I understand I can set the unit up in load-balance or failover mode. I'd love to have it working most of the time as a load-balancer between the two connections, to get higher throughput for the office. If it's in load-balance mode, and one of the connections fails (eg, the T1), will it switch over to the second connection automatically?
    3) My preferred method of VPN through the FVS114 is an IPSec configuration with IPSecuritas on Mac. It's likely that we'll increase the use of VPN at the office, with potentially up to 5 people creating a connection to the office from their home location. What's the throughput for the RV042 for each IPSec connection?
    3) Are there any catches I should watch out for when setting up a dual WAN? I understand that some websites which track IP addresses may not work correctly, since a particular user may connect to a site from both WAN ports in succession. Can anyone add detail to this issue, and what kinds of sites may not work with this configuration? Is there any way to maintain sessions through one port or the other?
I think that's all for now - very grateful for any help provided.
    Matt

    >1) Can I do any kind of QOS/bandwidth management with this unit
SR: I recall there is an appendix in the user guide that provides instructions on using the Bandwidth Management feature for VoIP services.
SR: In load balance mode, if a WAN goes down (as detected by the NSD mechanism), all traffic will be redirected to the other WAN automatically. There might be a couple of minutes before the redirection happens.
SR: RV042 can handle about 50Mbps of IPSec traffic at a maximum. This capacity will be shared by all IPsec connections.
SR: RV042 will direct all packets within a TCP connection to the same WAN port. If a site requires 2 TCP connections coming from the same ip address during the login process, users may experience login failure. An easy workaround is to bind the https service to a dedicated WAN port. In case the dedicated WAN port goes down, the router will still redirect the https traffic to the other WAN port.

  • RV042 Static Routing Question

I am currently using RV042 in the two-WAN backup mode. However, I tried the redundant option and am finding it to give me more bandwidth and better performance than only one of the WANs.
My problem is that in the redundant mode, I am unable to use a few websites that I use on a regular basis. One of the sites is our internet hosted time sheet service and their site just goes crazy when I try to access it through the router set up in redundant mode. I am not even able to login to their site, and it is important for my daily work.
My question is - can I set up static routes for certain sites so that the router knows to access them through only one of my WANs? For example, if my timesheet software site is 123.123.123.123, and my prefered WAN gateway is 68.68.68.68, can I tell the router to only access this site through the given gateway, even if the router is configured to use either WAN?
I have tried static routes and it does not seem to work at all.
    For example:
    Site: 123.123.123.123
    SM: 255.255.255.0
    Gateway 68.68.68.68
When I save this and run the tracert to 123.123.123.123, it goes through the other gateway, and not the one I specified here.
    Any hints are appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Alex P.

If your using this in load balance mode, go to system management and scroll down to protocol binding.  Chances are your going to a secure site with both wans working and the site sees one connection with two ip addresses coming at it and breaks the connection.  You can do a protocol bind for all your https traffic to go out one wan for all the ip addresses in your network and this should fix the issue.  You can do this for mail and other protocols that would get messed up by the dual wan.  Hope this helps.

  • RV042 remote admin question

I'm hoping this question has a simple answer that i'm overlooking.  One of our customers has to abide with some regulations and a security company has ran a scan on their network and reported vulnerabilities.  One of those vulnerabilities is in regards to port 443.  When going to their address remotely (i.e. https://dynamicname.dyndns.com), you are prompted for a login even though we specifically defined a port for remote admin (i.e. https://dynamicname.dyndns.com:XXXX).  I would think since we defined the port for remote admin then 443 wouldn't be able to access the router.  Is there a way to fix this?  We tried blocking just port 443 but that locked us out of the router for some reason.  Any feedback is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

If port 443 is not used, you could consider forwarding port 443 to a LAN IP that is not used as a workaround to pass the security scan.
Which firmware are you using on RV042?

  • RV042 - Load Balancing question

Hi, I have the RV042 (firmware 1.3.13.02-tm) in Load Balancing mode. When I do a speedtest, the result is the total bandwidth available on my 2 connections, i.e. 8-9,000 Kbit/Sec (each line is approx 4,500 Kbit/Sec). When I stream from Netflix, the bandwidth throughput is about 4-4,5000 Kbit/Sec. Should not the RV042 stream Netflix as the combined speed between WAN 1 and 2, i.e. at 8-9,000?

Load balance permits more available bandwidth. It may effective double the speed because the requests have more pipe available to utilize but not because it increases the over all speed of your connection. If your connections are 5 mbit they remain 5 mbit.

  • Questions about RV042

    Hi all,
I tried to configure two RV042 working together.
    Host1: 192.168.11.100/24     Gateway: 192.168.11.1
    Host2: 192.168.13.100/24     Gateway: 192.168.13.1
    Router1:
    LAN: 192.168.12.1/24
    WAN: 192.168.11.1     Gateway : 0.0.0.0
    Router2:
    LAN: 192.168.13.1/24
    WAN: 192.168.12.3     Gateway: 192.168.12.1
I 've added static routing into:
    Router 1
    dest: 192.168.13.0     Mask: 255.255.255.0     GW: 192.168.12.3     Interface:LAN    Hop:1
    Host1 <->WAN1
                         |
                   Router1
                         |
                      LAN       <->       WAN1
                                                      |
                                                 Router2
                                                       |
                                                    LAN        <->  Host2
WAN2 of both Router1 and Router2 are unused (unplugged).
However, the Host2 can never ping to Host1. So as to Host1.
What 's wrong with my setting?
Should I need to configure the protocol binding for all the traffic to the WAN1?
    Thanks

    Hi Jasbryan,
Thanks for your suggestion. I 've solved this problem by some workarounds.
I find a very curious situation:
If there is a Host3 which is located between the router2 WAN and the Router1 LAN (it is actually being plugged to the router2 LAN), Host3 itself can ping to Host 1 and Host 2. However, Host1 and Host2 can never ping to each other. This phenomenon is only under the situation that the Router 2 WAN ip is 192.168.12.5. If I change the IP to others such as 12.1, 12.2, 12.3... , the setting then works.
I don't why this will happen but I am sure the ip 192.168.12.5 is an unique address in my setting and it causes no conflict.
    Thanks,
    Gregory

  • RV042 Multiple subnet question

I'd like to set each individual LAN port with different address i.e. LAN 1 192.168.1.1 and LAN 2 10.1.1.1 instead of using the multiple subnet feature and having all ports replying for the addresses created. Is this possible?
    Thanks

    Good afternoon,
    Thanks for using our forum
HiHernandes Sousa Hernandes Sousa, my name is Haider and I am part of the Small Business Support Community. I tried to replicate your network and discovered that there are two ways to set/configure LAN port with different address i.e. LAN 1  192.168.1.1 and LAN 2  10.1.1.1 instead of using the Multiple Subnet  feature and having all ports replying for the addresses created:
through  the help of an access-list because different LANs on a router will ping each other no matter what as they are physically connected by the  router. So, access list could be an option.
through disabling Dynamic Host Control Protocol (DHCP). This will prevent the host to get an IP address and will help to stay in its own different network.
I hope you find this information useful, also please do let me know how this works out.

  • Setting up failover in an RV042 V3

I have a new (about 4 months old) RV042 V3 4.0.0.07 firmware that I am trying to use in failover mode.  I have a SOHO and I normally use cable Internet connection.  It is quite fast (15 megabit), but not super reliable.  I have added DSL (3.3 megabit) which is five nines (supposedly) but not so quick.
I have a Westell 7500 wireless DSL modem located in the basement, where the telephone lines enter the building.  This gives me a wireless link to the second floor server room through  a wireless router that connects to WAN 2 of the RV042.   The cable modem is in the server room and connects directly to the WAN 1 of the RV042.  The cable works, but when it goes down, the DSL link comes up but does not allow Internet traffic.  The RV042 is set up as a Bridge and I have set up port forwarding to get the cable to work and used similar firewall commands to route the traffic if the router switched over.  I suspect that the problem is in the port forwarding (port 80) or the firewall rules(which are pretty simple) because everything looks like it switches over, but it just doesn't work on WAN2.
Can anyone shed any light on this problem, which does not seem like it should exist?
    Thanks, Bob

Default Gateway on WAN2: Initially DHCP value from R1, but I changed it to use a static IP setup as you suggested, but since a PC works on R2  I figured it was OK.  The DHCP numbers were the exact numbers that I assigned as static as suggested in the your next question.  Apparently this change makes WAN2 work.  Not sure if that was the only problem because I also gave R4 a static address of 192.168.10.2, figuring if one static was good, then two statics would be at least twice as good.
Have you tried giving WAN2 a static IP address and gateway that points to R1?
I did as you suggested and put static WAN2 as 192.168.2.2. It makes it cleaner.  Please look at my firewall rules, I know that at least one is not right, and if I look at the SysLog I get lots of questions.  There is a web server at 192.168.10.11, which has always been there but not on the drawing.
Default gateway on WAN1: From DHCP from cable company modem and it works as it is supposed to:
IP Add. xx.xx.xx.71, Default Gate. xx.xx.xx.1, Dyndns enabled
I have added an updated network drawing and some router configurations.  Note the stuff in the SysLog, which I can't get figured out.  The syslog concerns me that my firewall is not set up right.   I added the webserver to the drawing, which I have updated many times this weekend as work proceeded.
    *** Solution Comments ***
As noted in the multiple edited section above, adding static addresses appears to have fixed my failover problem.  I had left the question open because I was seeing firewall log activity.  After several days of digging around I figured out what eth0 and eth1 were.   They are LAN and WAN1 respectively.  Since the system is operating with WAN2 connected and WAN1 blocked this is apparently normal operation since WAN1 is blocked by policy.
Since it appears to fail over after changing to static addresses, I guess this question was answered by mpyhala when he asked me if I was using static addresses.   I have always done that, and I cannot imagine why I didn't do it this time.  Thanks for getting me on the right track.
As for the Log activity, it is to be expected  and the log activity appears to make sense, when you consider the traffic path.
    Thanks, for the help

  • IChat video conference question?

I have a couple of and maybe some dumb questions.
I manage a small office with 3 Dell desktop windows XP Pro computers and 2 Macs (1-iMac 1000GHz & 1-Powerbook G4 1000GHz, both 10.4.8) and one Savin Office scanner/copy machine. The one Windows XP computer works as the server for the Savin copier. All are assigned static IP addresses. I'm presently running a Linksys wireless router WRT54G. We have several other seperate locations associated with the business where we would like to be able to video conference with iChat.
I use to be able to iChat (video & audio) with the office computers for about a year and a half from my office but after changing the Linksys router from an older non-wireless version to the newer wireless version WRT-54G vers. 5, I can no longer Video or Audio iChat with the office on either of the 2 Macs listed above (text chating is no problem). The 2 office computers can no longer Video or Audio iChat with any other locations any where (but they can within the office, machine to machine). After exhaustive research, I'm convinced it is the Router.
I was thinking of getting the new Airport Extreme base station with N, that Apple is now advertising, to see if this works. My first question is, will it work with the Savin Office copier/scanner like the Linksys does? Is it any different in setting up than say the Linksys?
Is this more of a HOME piece of equipment or can I really use it in an office setting that is truely cross platform. (all computers file share with each other, particularly with the one XP machine that is the server for the Savin scanner.)
Will I have any problems at all with iChat.
I know there are a lot of questions but I really don't want to spend the money and disrupt the office if there is any anticipation of problems.
The business is a Day Care Center with 9 locations so the Video & Audio chat is important to the kids and the office personnel.
If this will work flawlessly, I would go ahead and replace the 10 routers for the 10 different centers we have, so everyone can Video & Audio iChat.
    Thanks for your help.
    Jim

Might it be that you just don't have the proper ports opened on the Linksys router to allow for both the audio & video portions of iChat? The following site is a great tool in setting up ports for specific routers, including your Linksys: http://portforward.com/default.htm
I was thinking of getting the new Airport Extreme base station with N, that Apple is now advertising, to see if this works. My first question is, will it work with the Savin Office copier/scanner like the Linksys does? Is it any different in setting up than say the Linksys?
I am assuming that your Savin copier is Ethernet-enabled. Since the new AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) provides three Ethernet LAN ports, it should function similiarly to the Linksys to provide network access to the Savin. Since it a different device, there will be differences on setup. For example, the previous AirPort base station relied on the AirPort utilities for setup...and not a web-based one like the Linksys do. This is expected to be the same for the new model.
Is this more of a HOME piece of equipment or can I really use it in an office setting that is truely cross platform. (all computers file share with each other, particularly with the one XP machine that is the server for the Savin scanner.)
I would treat the AEBS no different than your current Linksys. Would you consider the Linksys a "HOME" piece of equipment? The AEBS should fit in quite well in a business environment as it does in a home one.
Will I have any problems at all with iChat.
As long as you have the proper ports opened on BOTH your hardware AND software firewalls, should shoudn't have any problems with iChat.

  • Linkysys RV042 QuickVPN to router issues

    Hi
Any help with this issue is greatly appreciated as I have been stuck on this for acouple of days now, this is my first time posting to a forum... I have setup VPN connections before but only through packages such as openswan & openvpn not through such a device.
My VPN router is connected directly to an ADSL modem, directly behind the RV042 I have placed my test machine on port 1 both Wan1 & port 1 show as Gree (active).
    Modem...
    DHCP enabled
    local IP: 10.1.1.1
    The VPN has...
    Wan1: 10.1.1.2
    Lan1: 10.222.43.1
    Test machine...
    IP address: 10.222.43.100
I have been given two Linksys RV042 devices to setup as VPN end point/connections from one LAN to another.
However before I do this I have been testing the setup of a test machine (Laptop Windows 7 professional & also tried XP professional with exactly the same results) to the VPN router device.I have configured the router with the basic setup as described in the step-by-step guide / pdf and setup a test user & one tunnel I have left every thing as default and only changed what is necessary.
I have generated a certificate for the server and distributed a client certificate to my client machine and installed in the "C:\Program Files (x86)\Linksys\Linksys VPN Client\" directory (as I understand I can simply download to this location and its installed for the client).
The above is a run down of the steps listed in the setup guide provided on the CD, every time I try to connect to the server I get the following error message.
Failed to establish a connection. This could be caused by one of the following:1. Incorrect password.2. No valid IP for the network card.3. Incorrect server address.4. You may need to disable your Windows firewall.5. Local IP address conflicts with the subnet of remote VPN server.
    1. I know my password is correct
    2. I am not sure what "No valid IP for the network card" means though I am able to get access to the internet through the modem on my test laptop and have access to the web interface of the RV042 so I assume that my IP is valid?
    3. I know the server address is correct I have tried both internal address of the RV042 and the wan1 address of the RV042
    4. I get exactly the same error message whether the firewall is turned on or off on either of the XP or 7 machines.
    5. This is the one that I am confused about, there are no machines connected so I am unsure how there could be a conflict. however just to make sure I have changed the IP of the laptop to one outside of the range allocated to the tunnel, and I still get the same error message.
I have checked the log file of the server "system log" and this is what I get it appears that the server actually accepts the connection from what I can make of this series of messages.

The log file on the local machine however shows that there is an error though it just says "Failed to connect" so  I am very confused about where the issue lies.

    Hi SamirDarji
Thank you for your reply to my post. This mostly gives me a solution to work with, however I have now been faced with another issue. I am now supposed to synchronize with a ADSL modem / router / vpn / firewall in another location for which is a different brand. From what I can see is that I have the same settings available on both RV042 and the other device. My question is... now I have setup all vpn devices, I am confused about how to connect / test the devices. The two RV042 devices have a test connection button under vpn summary for the tunnel but neither of them appear to connect (it just cycles through and never connects). Initially I thought that the devices may not be able to see each other as the two RV042 devices are behind a firewall / modem however i have put the vpn RV042 routers on the dmz of the test networks behind their gateway modems. The ADSL modem / router / vpn / firewall device on the live network is the gateway as well, this device has the firewall disabled (the firewall job is passed down the chain to a few special purpose firewall devices before the core switches) would this affect the vpn?
    thanks again

  • Question for the experts... Two ISP's, one home network

OK, I am about to give up on the EA2700... It has been a small nightmare that has cost me time and money.
A bit of background here... We live way off grid, so far that being wired to it is not going to happen in my lifetime. We generate our own power from our own small hydro-electric plant on our creek. We have two internet connections, (three if you include tethering to the phones) and have been manually switching between to two. They are Hughesnet satellite and a line-of-sight ISP.
Here is my question: What is the best router out there for joining the two ISP's?
We had a network guy up to our place last year and he used the "netsh" command in DOS on each computer in the network. It worked for a while but I have a feeling this may have been a contributing factor in the current troubles we're having with the EA2700. We have removed two of the older PC's that had these command lines and have added a new laptop and tower, both of which we attempted to replicate the netsh command on but without success... Yes, a noob at this stuff...
I'm in the city today and am wanting to purchase the right unit before I head back into the hinterland. Thanks!

If you are planning to join two ISP's, you need a dual WAN router. EA2700 can't handle that. You might want to check this RV042 from Cisco.
If everyone needs to believe in something, I believe I'll have another beer..

  • Import VPN admin certificate from RV016 to RV042

    Hello,
I've configured VPN to use quickVPN for RV016. The VPN connection works fine. I'm going to install the second SB router RV042
in the same location in order the users should use RV042 instead of RV016. My Question is, is it possible to export the admin
certificate from RV016 Router and import it on RV042 to avoid sending the client certificate of the RV042 to users? If it works then
I need only to replace the ip address on the clients and they connect to RV042 Router.
    Many Thanks and best regards

    Hi Nevzat,
Thank you for posting. I believe that every router creates a unique certificate and a certificate from one router will not work with another. The whole point of the certificate is to warn the end user (client) that they may be connecting to the wrong router. If the same certificate worked for multiple routers it would defeat the purpose.
