RV042 - WAN Routing Assistance

I have my RV042 set up in Dual WAN mode and both WANs are working properly.  I would like to configure WAN1 to handle all traffic, unless it fails and then have everything to go to WAN2.  Pretty much what Smart Link Backup does, however with that enabled only 1 of the WANs is live at any given time.  I'd like both WANs to always be live as I'm going to see the second one as a back-door into the network.  Is this possible to do with routing?  I tried setting a routing rule to have everything to go WAN1, but when WAN1 goes down, nothing is rounted via WAN2.
Thanks.

Hello,
I understand what you were trying to accomplish but this is not something you can do through static routing.
Your route technically says to get to the 192.168.1.0 subnet go to 192.168.1.1, and since the subnet mask is 255.255.255.0 your destination is being changed to the network ID.
There is however a way to setup Dual WAN so that certain clients use a certain WAN.
Go ahead and delete the static route you have created as it won't do what you are looking for.
Then go to System Management >> Dual WAN and click the configuration for one of the WANs.
At the bottom of that page you will see the protocol binding section.
For the service you should select all traffic, the source IP will be whatever clients you want to send out a certain WAN, and for the destination just use 0.0.0.0.  Then select the WAN port you want that client to use.  This will setup a rule to send traffic from that host out the WAN you specified.  You may need to create several to cover all of your clients.
There is also a Small Business Knowledge base article with some screenshots to help illustrate what I am talking about.  That is available here about halfway down the page.
Setup Dual WAN on RV042
Hope that helps, if you do have any problems with it go ahead and give us a call at the SBSC and we can assist you in getting this configured.

  • Help with RV042 Static Routing

I just purchased an RV042 Dual WAN Router. Both WAN's are connected from different ISP's. I have a PBX phone server connected to this router and want all traffic to and from this phone server going out strictly on one WAN and all the computers and the rest of the traffic on the other WAN. If I understand correctly, this needs to be set up in static routes? If that's the case, how would I do that? If not, the question still stands. Please help.

    Hello Vitaly,
What you are looking for is Protocol Binding. By setting this up you will be able to control what traffic goes out which WAN port. Protocol Binding can be done for certain traffic types or for certain IP addressess.

  • RV042 set route priority

We are using two RV042s at site with a remote office, and each has a normal internet connection on WAN1. The remote site also has a dedicated wireless link to the Main site so those users can access the server, but the RV042 is routing normal outbound traffic over BOTH WANs instead of just WAN1 (Load Balance).
How does one set WAN1 as the prinary outbound link? Dual Wan only has "Load Balance" and "Smart Link", .. and there appears to be no way to set the route priority.
        Thanks1
        Lee

    L.V,
Use Protocol Binding to bind outbound traffic to one WAN port or the other. As an example you can bind all http traffic to WAN 1 so anyone browsing the web will connect over that WAN port only. If WAN 1 goes down, then the traffic will route to WAN 2.

  • VPN and a Dual Wan router confusion

I am running a Border Manager 3.9 server with a Dual Wan router supplying the 2 ISPs load balancing to a single NIC on the Border Manager Server. I want to try setting up a VPN.
Whats the easiest most pain free way of doing this?

Hah! Well, inbound traffic in general can be problematical on a
    dual-wan system.
Here you have two issues, if the router is like ones I've worked on.
First, load balancing. You can't (probably - this is based on my
experience) set up a static NAT of one of the public IP addresses to
the BM 'public' address and still load balance. My experience is that
as soon as you do that, it forces both inbound and outbound traffic
onto that particular WAN link, so it kills load balancing/failover.
Which means you need to do port forwarding on the router for all the
VPN ports. You will need TCP and UPD 353, and UPD 500 and 4500 inbound
(and replies outbound). If using a site-site VPN, you also need TCP
    213 inbound.
You will have to configure the VPN address in BMgr to use one of the
WAN public IP's. The VPN will only work on that one WAN link.

  • RV325 Dual WAN Router - Use only one IP

I have a rv325 dual wan router. I have setup load balancing on the router, but I don't want one of the servers here being load balanced. How do i set it to only use a specific WAN while everything else is load balanced?

    Michael,
I like to share link that will has a step by step screenshots on how to configure protocol binding. Your source ip will be server and Destination is whichever WAN you are shaping that traffic. Hope this helps

  • OS X Server as a Dual WAN Router

    Hello.
I am studying a way to use a Mac Mini with Snow Leopard Server as a Gateway for our network (about 20-30 clients). I know I can use a USB NIC as a 2nd interface to the internet. I wonder if I could use 2 USB NICs to simulate a 2 WAN router. Could it work for load balance? I have 2 ISPs and my router (Hotbrick) has just died.
So my config would be: 2 USB NICs to handle the 2 ISPs connections and the integrated NIC to connect to my internal network.
As I have very little experience on MAC OS X server, I ask if I could this way have NAT, Firewall, Load Balance and VPN services.
    Thanks in advance.

There's no inherent load balancing option within Mac OS X, so using Mac OS X to load balance multiple upstream WAN links is going to be tricky, for sure.
There are ways of doing it, but it's far outside of the box, and I wouldn't recommend it, especially if you're new to using Mac OS X Server.

  • Cannot Port Forward RV042 in "Router" Mode

I use an RV042 exclusively as our VPN host to our main network for branch office connectivity. The RV042 is configured in Router Mode and does not provide Internet / NAT access to the LAN. I would like to add an additional role to this unit by having it Port Forward web requests to an internal Web Server. It appears that the router cannot do Port Forwarding while configured in Router mode; can you confirm this to be true? Is there a work around or an alternate configuration that would allow me to port forward web requests from the Internet to my Internal Web Server and still keep the RV042 in Router only mode?
    Thanks

    Mike,
The port forwarding feature only works in the context of NAT. This is true for all small business routers.

  • WAN Router Connection to Data Center

We have a WAN router that needs to connect to our Data Center network.  The Data Center consists of two N7K core switches, with a pair of N5K switches as aggregation, and each N5K has twelve N2K fabric extenders.  The N2Ks are single-homed to the N5Ks.  The N5Ks are vPC connected to the N7Ks.
We would like to attach the WAN router to both N7K switches in the Data Center.  The N7K switches only have 10G ports in them, so we can't terminate the WAN router directly to the N7Ks.
I was considering creating one dedicated VLAN on each N7K, and assigning an SVI to each VLAN, to correspond to the L3 connections between the N7Ks and the WAN router.  Then, we could trunk these VLANs to each of the N5Ks, and configure one 1G port on each N5K for the VLAN, and connect the WAN router to the N5Ks.
    Two questions regarding this design:
    1) Is there a problem in connecting the L3 WAN router to the N7K via the N5K?
    2) Does vPC connectivity between the N7K and N5K pose a problem for the proposed WAN connectivity?
Thanks in advance for any feedback.

The vPC between N5K and N7K is the catch here. Layer-3 routing over vPC member ports is currently not supported so I will advise you to stay away from this approach.

  • Windows server with dual wan router

Hello, I have a doubtful scenario to be addressed. We had our 2008 server running on a single internet connection, but since its not reliable and has down time we planned to get another one.  We also bought a
DUAL WAN Router so that we get some of the IPs without the group policy applied for testing purposes. So if we run a DHCP
server on the router instead of the Windows 2008 server, will it work? We need one internet connection as the main connection and the other as standby for continous internet access.

    Guys,
This is getting difficult to follow the conversation.  Let me try to clarify,..this is way way simpler than what it is being made (as far as I can interpret the situation).
    1. The dual WAN is completely irrelevant to the situation.  It could easily be a single WAN (single ISP) and it wouldn't make any difference.
    2. The WAN Device is the "Firewall",...meaning it is the NAT device,..and the only NAT Device
    3. There is no VPN,...but if there were the VPN would have to be performed by the WAN Device, meaning that you would have had to purchased one capable of such.
    4. The private LAN, as far as I can tell from what I read, is a single subnet "flat" network. Hence there is no router, none, zero,...and there should not be.
    5. The result of #3 and #4 mean that RRAS should not be enabled on any server on the LAN anywhere.
    6. DHCP needs to be, or at least it is best to be, "Active Directory Aware". Therefore it should be run on the Domain Controller.  The WAN Device should have Client serving DHCP completely disable.
    7. Group Policy is applied to an OU. If a machine account is in such OU then the policy will be applied, if the machine account is not in the OU then it will not be applied.  GPOs should be applied to specific OUs,...not at the "root" of the tree.
The only policies that should be applied at the "root" are the Default Domain Policy and the Default Domain Controller Policy,..and those should never be touched and left at their "default" so that you have a place to return to if GPO things go badly.
Do not leave objects within the Default Containers (Computers, USers, etc). Always create one or more OUs (you can even nest them), move the objects into them, and Link (apply) the GPOs at that level.
    Hope this helps clarify things.

  • VLAN routing on Catalyst plus external WAN router issue......

    Hi,
    Bit of advice if possible.
I've got a project to implement VLAN's on a MAN, which is easy enough, using CAT4506 and a mixture of 3750 and 2950 switches. The Vlan aspect is OK but I'm a bit unsure as to how to integrate the WAN into the design.
I have two core WAN access sites each with 2 * cat4506 switches of which one at each site attach to a WAN router (3725)
The CAT4506 switches will be doing the vlan routing but the 3725 routers (one at each site in a HSRP group) will be routing the WAN. Obviously these need to be attached to the catalysts for WAN access. As I have seperate routers for vlan routing and wan routing, what is the best way to configure this ?????
Is configuring a seperate VLAN for the routers the best idea ? or is it best to use the sub interface option on the router ethernet ports ?
Do I just use a static route of last resort on the Catalyst pointing to the routers ?
    Help :-)

When you arte still in the design-phase, I want to strongly discourage you from designing a network with vlans that span multiple sites.
You will always run int STP issues in one way or another. The following link will give some sensible information on this subject:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/netsol/ns340/ns394/ns147/ns17/networking_solutions_white_paper09186a00800a3e16.shtml
I hope that it will point you to the right (or at leats an optimal) solution for your specific design.

  • RV042 Static Routing Question

I am currently using RV042 in the two-WAN backup mode. However, I tried the redundant option and am finding it to give me more bandwidth and better performance than only one of the WANs.
My problem is that in the redundant mode, I am unable to use a few websites that I use on a regular basis. One of the sites is our internet hosted time sheet service and their site just goes crazy when I try to access it through the router set up in redundant mode. I am not even able to login to their site, and it is important for my daily work.
My question is - can I set up static routes for certain sites so that the router knows to access them through only one of my WANs? For example, if my timesheet software site is 123.123.123.123, and my prefered WAN gateway is 68.68.68.68, can I tell the router to only access this site through the given gateway, even if the router is configured to use either WAN?
I have tried static routes and it does not seem to work at all.
    For example:
    Site: 123.123.123.123
    SM: 255.255.255.0
    Gateway 68.68.68.68
When I save this and run the tracert to 123.123.123.123, it goes through the other gateway, and not the one I specified here.
    Any hints are appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Alex P.

If your using this in load balance mode, go to system management and scroll down to protocol binding.  Chances are your going to a secure site with both wans working and the site sees one connection with two ip addresses coming at it and breaks the connection.  You can do a protocol bind for all your https traffic to go out one wan for all the ip addresses in your network and this should fix the issue.  You can do this for mail and other protocols that would get messed up by the dual wan.  Hope this helps.

  • RV042 WAN Slow (Yep, another post about this)

    Hi,
I've searched and read other posts on this here and else where (via google) but cannot seem to resolve the situation.
To help save time I've compiled a list of various tests (including bypassing the RV042) and configuration options.
    Tests (via DSL Reports) :
    without RV042 (direct connection to T1) 1410 up / 1410 down
    WITH RV042  1094 up / 763kb down
    Hardware:
    new Cisco RV042
    Firmware Version: 1.3.12.19-tm
    Internet Providers:
WAN 1: Covad T1 via Samsung iBG1000 T1 Router (NAT Disabled, RV042 has been assigned public IP Address)
WAN 2 (Failover): Atlantic BroadBand (via Surf Board Cable Modem)
    RV042 Configuration:
MTU has been set to Auto, 1500, and 1492 (currently set to 1500) - speeds remain slow
SPI Enabled & Disabled - no change
Setting for Internet Port Speeds (also tried 1512 up for WAN 2 in case of GUI related error)
    Interface
    Upstream
    (Kbit/Sec)
    Downstream
    (Kbit/Sec)
    WAN1
    WAN2
I think that about covers it, please let me know if there is any other info you need me to provide and thank you in advance for any help you can give.

  • Configuring Frame-Relay and the Frame-Relay Switch To Participate in WAN Routing

    Hey,
My WAN in my voice lab is currently functional between all of my routers HQ, BR1, and BR1 with full-mesh connectivity.  I am using my PSTN router for the frame-relay switching as is shown in the attached configs.  I have used the connect commands for the PVC routing logic.
    connect HQ-BR1 Serial0/3/0 101 Serial0/2/0 201
    connect HQ-BR2 Serial0/3/0 102 Serial0/2/1 301
    connect BR1-BR2 Serial0/2/0 202 Serial0/2/1 302
My question concerns the possibility of getting the PSTN router to participate in the WAN and the OSPF routing process?  The connect command tells how the PVCs are to be connected and pass through the PSTN router.  Is there anyway to do it so that a PVC connects to the PSTN router itself?
I would specifically like to create a connection between the HQ and PSTN router over the WAN.  If anyone has any insight on this I would really appreciate it.
    Thank you.

    Hello Adam,
you don't need to do FR switching.
You just need to configure a back to back PVC associated to a p2p subinterface under PSTN router interface se0/3/0 and HQ:se0/1/0. the new PVC can be 103 on both sides
    PSTN
    interface ser0/3/0.103 point-to-point
    ip address 10.1.13.1 255.255.255.0
    frame-relay interface-dlci 103
    HQ
    interface ser0/1/0.103 point-to-point
    ip address 10.1.13.1 255.255.255.0
    frame-relay interface-dlci 103
note: I was able to do this using the older syntax frame-relay route under interface configuration on frame relay switch. I would expect to work for you too with newer syntax connect.
    Hope to help

  • WAN router LAN interface Best practice for speed

    Hello
I have an ASR router with a WAN link of 100M.
The LAN connection for this router is Gig capable.
Should I configure the LAN interface on the router for Gig or would this cause problems with potentially 10 times the data
exiting the LAN out to the WAN with only a 100M pipe?

If you set your LAN interface to run at 100Mbps, likely you would just be moving your possible bottleneck one hop deeper into your LAN (often on devices with weak QoS support).
Leave your LAN interface at gig.  If congestion, on WAN egress, becomes an issue, you can then try QoS to mitigate it.  For example, for starters, you might want to place your WAN egress traffic into fair-queue.
