RV082 PPTP

Hello All,
I have been having ongoing problems with my RV082 router. For a while now at random times the router just locks up. It does not give out DHCP addresses, you can not access the web interface internally or externally when this happens, no internet, no nothing when this happens- even with a static IP. This router was replaced by Cisco and was doing great for months and now the problem has started again.
This started a few days ago on version 4.1.1.01 and I upgraded to 4.2.1.02 with no luck. I did a factory restore and did not configure anything. It worked great. I did not have anything connected to the router except Wan1 and my laptop. All other switches and devices were disconnected. Then one by one I started to configure the router. I started with PPTP and then that is when the problem started again. It seems like once I enabled PPTP and the remote computer connected the router began to freeze. I restarted and it worked fine for a few minutes (probably until the remote computer reconnected) and then it went crazy again. The only way I could get the router to work and to get back on the web interface was to disconnect the Wan, restart the router and then I had access to the web interface in order to disable PPTP. It has been working fine ever since I disabled PPTP.
Gateway to Gateway between sites A and B (problem router) seems to be fine. Remote computer can connect to site A fine, when it or any computer connects to site B- the problems begin.
Site A uses 192.168.2.0 range
Site B uses 192.168.3.0 range
Remote Computer is on 192.168.111.0 range
Any ideas on what might be happening here? I really need remote access and I can never get the quickvpn or other third party vpn clients to work.
Thanks in advance for any help or insight you can provide!
CJ

I just tried to go in reverse- instead of going from a computer on the 192.168.111.0 network to the 192.168.3.0 site, I went from 192.168.3.0 to the PPTP on the 192.168.111.0 network and the router is dead again with the PPTP passing through it this time.
Any thoughts?
Thanks again,
CJ

  • Why is RV082 PPTP no longer working with Windows 7 clients?

I have successfully used the built-in Windows 7 VPN (PPTP) to connection to an RV082 (Firmware 2.0.2.01-tm) many times in the past. The Windows 7 client stopped working recently, now producing "error 691: the remote connection was denied because the user name and password combination is not recognized." I have the same problem from two different Windows 7 clients and Windows XP clients still work.

    Hi Tad,

    Hello,
I am working with vpn setups for the first time, so I have some questions I would really appriciate some help with. I would like to be able to connect to a computer on a home network through a linksys E2500 router. I have found alot of documentation on connecting to an external vpn from a computer on the lan side of the router, but nothing on connecting from the outside in. The router does have a static ip address with my internet provider, so I can contact the router from the outside. But makeing the connection to the computer on the other side of the router is where I am missing something or I dont realize that it is not possible. On the lan side I am using DHCP to assign the address to the computer I want to connect to. Perhaps I need to make it have a static address also? I realize that when I configure the connection from the outside that I need to direct the connection to the remote computer in some way, unless vpn connections are fully passed through the router and the connection issue I am haveing is with the "inside" computer.

  • PPTP Problems with RV320

I just bought a new RV320 to replace my older RV082 in my local office network. I was able to get the RV320 set up and running, but had a problem with the PPTP settings. On the RV082 I have three gateway-to-gateway VPNs set up and when a user logs in using a PPTP VPN they are able to access resources on any of the gateway-togateway VPNs. I set up the RV320 the same way and had all of the gateway-to-gateway tunnels up and running and verified from my internal network that I can reach the servers on each tunnel. I set up a PPTP user and verified that I can reach the network from a remote computer, but when I try to reach a resource on one of the gateway-to-gateway tunnels it crashes the RV320 and I have to reconnect all of my gateway-to-gateway VPNs. I ensured that all of the pass throughs are enabled and haven't found any other settings that seem out of place. Can anyone think of anything else that I may need to set up to get this to work?
I know a lot of people wouldn't use the PPTP with the other options available, but this is the best option to connect my Surface RT tablet to the network while I'm on the road since a client isn't availble for it.
    Thanks,
    Clinton

    Clinton,
just found your post and it sounds similar to an issue I am experiencing with a client.
Two sites, RV320 with latest firmware in the main office and a satellite office with a Netgear unit.  Both connected via a gateway to gateway IPSec vpn.   The link is very stable.  The satellite office initiates the connection.  The main office RV320 also has a number of users setup for PPTP remote access to company resources such as rdp/rdc.
Our issue is when I vpn in with pptp to the main office, the RV320, the moment I try to access the satellite office subnet it triggers the IPSec gateway to gateway vpn to crash.  I then have to remote into the satellite office and manual restart the link.... then all is fine again.  Now, if I am physically at the main office, and ping or access the satellite office subnet, all is fine.
My thought has been that either I do not have the gateway to gateway vpn setup properly or there is some access rule I am missing.  I need to do some more research and experiment with the connection.  It very well could be my setup as this was the first time I have setup IPSec...  Just as a note, the RV320 itself never crashes ... it just shows the IPSec vpn is down ... I need to isolate the issue to either the Netgear or Cisco side...
I will follow this thread and see if you find out anything.
    cheers

  • RV082 - QuickVPN Client causes Windows 7 Bluescreen

    Hi,
I have a Cisco RV082 and can successfully connect with the Cisco QuickVPN Client, 1.4.2.1. However, after 1 to 5 minutes I see the Windows 7 bluescreen indicating that the system has halted due to a problem with a driver. I have installed the latest Windows updates and reinstalled the client.
The bluescreen only occurs if I use the Cisco QuickVPN Client.
    Can anyone assist?
    Thanks
    Michael

Hi Michael, Cisco does not have another supported VPN client for this model. You may use a 3rd party IPsec client such as shrewsoft or ipsecuritas or you may use the built-in PPTP feature.
It would be rather peculiar if the Windows error is generated because of the use of QVPN. Can you provide any additional troubleshooting information you have done?
-What is the firmware of the router?
-Have you uninstalled the QVPN software and reinstalled?
-Is it a particular file type or any file?
-Can you recreate this on multiple different computers and or operating systems?
-Can you provide an exact recreation scenario such as what file (or type), what server, any kind of particular transfer protocol, does this happen on different server platforms such as 2003, 2003R2, 2008, etc?
-When moving the same file from a non-server machine, such as a workstation with a map drive, does this persist?

  • RV082 speed limit to WAN

    Hi all,
I have been working for years with RV042 and RV082 routers wihout any problem.
Now, I have set up a RV082 connected to a router (cisco) from my Internet provider (Fiber)  that provides 30Mb. I am unable to download more than 10Mb/s. I can upload almost 30Mb/s.
If I connect my Airport Express directly to the Cisco router I can reach almost 30 Mb/s downloading and uploading with no problem.
I have played with MTU (auto, 1500, 1492,...) with no success. I have used Load balancing, backup or just one cable connecting Wan but no result.
    Can anyone help me?
    Thanks a lot!
    Alberto

    Hi all,
Today I do not have access to the router so I'll test all your suggestions tomorrow.
Samir, thanks. I'll test it and share results. For sure configuration is "auto" and I imagune this can explain the problem... let's see!
Nagaraja, thanks. Some comments about your suggestions:
First time I noticed the problem was with my old RV042, reseted and with upgraded firmware. Then I bought new out of the box RV082 thinking was a "muscle" problem as I 've never had more than 10Mb with the RV042. The  result was exactly the same. So the problem appeared with both models.
I can not have access to the Cisco Router from my provider. But remember that if I use an Airport instead the RV042 (I tested Extreme and Express versions) I get almost 30Mb uploading & downloading from wireless and wired connections. So I think problem is related to RV0xx or at least interaction between RV0xx and the Cisco Router.
In former companies I have been using Load Balancing & Smart Link Backup configurations with no problem with RV042 and RV082 models. Also Tunneling and PPTP access. I think I have tested all possible configurations. Althoug that, I'll review all settings again and test Load Balancing and Smart Link Backup to see if this affects.
Before last Samir comment I decided to buy a different router, I need to solve this ASAP. I have acquired a AllNet router ( http://goo.gl/qMWoCn ). So I'll test everything you suggested and the new Router.
    Thanks to all!

  • RV082 Remote Clients not Able To Access Server

I have a RV082 and several of my remote laptops cannot access my server using its domain name. It can be accessed using its internal ip address. The issue is that you can log onto the server using remote access and the ip however you cannot use any shortcuts using the domain name. You can see the server with the domin name however no access path is available. This is only on a few remote user laptops. Others work perfectly. Does anyone have any advise?

    Evans,
Please be details as possible when posting next.
You say some of your remote laptops can't access server via name and some can. How are the computers than can connect to servers name different from the ones that can't?
what connection type are the remote user using to connect to your network?
They using vpn software located on RV082?
    IPsec / PPTP  both ?
What's the subnet's that the remote computers are remote from ?
whats the local subnet of RV082?
Is the subnet's the same on remote computer as the RV082 ?
What's the WAN type (public) (private ) ip address ?
What's the topology of your network ?

  • Unable to connect client to vpn on rv082

    Hello all,
We currently have an RV082 and an RV180W at our remote site. Our VPN tunnel is up gateway to gateway but whenever I try to use quick connect I can't connect and get failed to establish connection message. I've created a user in client to gateway. I've also tried various WAN IP addresses from our ISP. Any help you have would be useful, thanks!

    Hi,
It looks like you did not create the client to gateway VPN in either the RV082 and the RV180W. In order to use the VPN user that you created in that router, you must create the client to gateway VPN inside that router. For example, you will have to configure PPTP VPN which is a client to gateway VPN and create a user in the RV180W. After that, you would set up the Windows default VPN set up. Please make sure that you use the WAN IP address of the RV180W that the client to gateway VPN was created in and use the VPN user that was created in that router as well. One last thing is that our Cisco Small Business routers do not support "Cisco Quick Connect."
I hope that made sense and please keep me posted or feel free to give us a call at 1-866-606-1866.

  • How to redirect Internet traffic from RV082 to RV042 through a VPN Tunnel??

    Fellows,
We have offices in USA and Venezuela.
In our USA office we have a RV042 router and in Venezuela we have a RV082 router.
We have connected a VPN tunnel (gateway-to-gateway) between both offices.
    The point is:
How   could we redirect the internet traffic from our Venezuela office   (RV082) to the USA Office (RV042) to navigate using USA public IP's?
The   reason for this is that we need to use online streaming services which   are only available for IP's from USA and we can't use them from the   Venezuelan IP's.
We  can not use the PPTP option since the  equipment which will use the  streaming services (like hulu, crackle,  etc.) in Venezuela is a Google  TV device which doesn't allow the  configuration of proxy navegation or  PPTP VPN connections itself. That's  the reason why we need to do that  through the routers.
We will really appreciate your support on this matter.
    Daniel

Hi Daniel, this is called ESP wildcard forwarding which the router does support.

  • RV082 and iPhone issues

    Hi,
This is a 3 part question.
    1. Is there a way to configure an iphone to connect using its native cisco IPSEC client to a RV082 router. If so, any configuration details would be very much appreciated.
    2. If #1 is not possible, is there an iPhone IPSEC app that can be purchased and used to connect to a RV082 router?
    3. Currently, I use PPTP to connect my iphone to my RV082 router, but it has 2 annoying problems.
             A.   Every single time that I try to connect my iPhone to my RV082 via PPTP, it takes 2 trys.  They 1st try always fails (and takes about 45 seconds to do so), and then the 2nd try (only if I try again immediately after the failure of the 1st try) always connects.
              B.  Once connected, it will not stay connected.  The disconnect time varies, but it it usually 2 to 4 minutes.
Does anyone out there have a solution for this time out problem?
Other than 1, 2, and 3 above, my RV082 works great.  It has an IPSEC tunnel to another location that works great, is up 24/7 and very rarely disconnects.  I also have 3 users at remote locations that access the servers behind the RV082 every day, all day long, via PPTP with no major issues.  If I could get iPhone connectivity working reliably via either IPSEC or PPTP, I would be totally satisfied with my router!
If anyone out there has any suggestions, I would be very grateful!

  • VPN (PPTP) and Password

I have configured a PPTP connection to my mail server and it works fine. But when I go into Settings > General > Network > VPN and set the password, I notice that it says "Ask every time". I enter the correct password for my user and it connects just fine.
But when I try to go in later and start the VPN connection, it asks me for a password. But it only gives me the number pad (like a phone number pad). So I can't enter the special characters that I have set for my password for the user. It will only allow the entry of numbers and some symbols.
Is there a way to not have to enter a password every time?

Made some progress, created a third userid (already had 2 created for myself) and it worked! Will investigate password length and complexity later.
Am now having an issue where the Remote Gateway is not responding, however I can happily ping the router WAN address, and have enabled ICMP echo response, even created a new rule to this effect, still the same issue.
Seriously, why is this utility so poor in it's error messages? They mean very little and leave you clueless. It seems that there are many problems with this QuickVPN s/w - if it works you are lucky, if problematic then you have issues.
I have attempted the Safe mode option - same result, disabled anti-virus, created custom rule for invbound ICMP, disabled firewall(makes no difference)
I have tried suggestions from other posts by adding the Path variable c:\windows\system32 but still get the same error - "remote gateway not responding". At this stage the RV082 is goiung back to the supplier as it is not fit for purpose - so much wasted time already spent on such a simple connection!
    What other options exist?
Question: is there any other method of connecting to this routers "VPN Client Access" without using the Cisco QuickVPN s/w?
Many thanks and good luck if you have a problem.
    Regards
    Duncan

Someone tries to connect to the PPTP server on 86.121.209.115 but the RV blocks it. They don't pass through your router. It's blocked.
If 86.121.209.115 really is not your IP address then your ISP would have a serious routing issue. You should never see any traffic not indented for your router. Thus better doublecheck that 86.121.209.115 really is not your IP address.
How do you connect to the internet? Do you use a PPTP or PPPoE internet connection?

  • RV082 Failing Credit Card processing security scan

    Hello,
I have an RV082 setup as the home unit for a small business VPN network and the unit is actuall in a town 30 miles from my office. I have the web interface setup so I can manage the VPN as well as open and close ports as required for remote desktop access to the facility. We have started processing credit cards with a new vendor and they do a quarterly security scan on the system. I have 2.0.0.19 firmware loaded on it. They failing my RV082 because it supports less than 128 bit on port 443.
Is there a way I can configure it to only accept 128 or 256 only?
I have never worked with the CLI on this unit just the GUI.
    Thanks in advance

    Hello toddah
It would be very nice if I could access from different locations as I
never lknow where I will be (ip address) when I am needed to provide
assistance. I generally log into the firewall and open a RDT port to a
specific machine for the duration of the support session and then back
out and close the port. I was hoping there was some way configuration
wise I could upgrade or limit the encryption strength so I could pass
the test and keep things secure.
I see. You were using RDP ports to access your network, and this process is no longer perceived as PCI compliant. You are correct in that a VPN connection may work for you. Being that you have an RV082, you have 3 options to establish a VPN connection to your RV082's network:
    1. IPSec Client - to - gateway, 2. Cisco Quick VPN, and 3. PPTP VPN. I am unsure as to which method will satisfy PCI compliance thoroughly.
will anyconnect work withthe RV082 as a VPN client?
I have not tested this, so I cannot state whether this will work. I can say that the RV082 allows IPSec VPN connections and works with clients that are built on Windows IPSec policies. In other words, this may work for you, but I would be unable to say for certain.
You can download the Cisco Quick VPN client from the Cisco.com Website.
    I certainly hope this helps.

  • RV082, intermittent dhcp, Firmware Version: v4.0.0.07

    Hello,
I have an RV082 using firmware version: v4.0.0.07. I do not have a separate dhcp server in my workgroup. I have checked the "Enable DHCP Server" box and been running my workgroup this way for a few years successfully with a group of six or seven Win XP desktops and several iPhones, printers, plotters, etc. I just recently seem to be having intermittent dhcp issues.
Specifically, when users log in on our desktops they get an error regarding the connection being low and no IP address is assigned. I can log in to the configuration utility from a machine that has successfully connected to the network and upon refreshing the DHCP status a few times, I see that the machine in question may only receive an IP address for 36 seconds or 60 seconds. After some time and rebooting of the desktop machine, an IP address will be assigned.
Any help you can provide would be much appreciated.
Thank you in advance for your time,
    Ryan

I too started experiencing this exact problem a few days ago. Some of the clients (the ones that actually receive an IP address from the RV082) only have a DHCP lease time of 60 seconds. None of my DHCP clients are receiving addresses even with the RV082 DHCP server enabled. No other DHCP server exists on the network. It is a small office network with the RV082 connected to a cable modem, all workstations and other devices connect directly to the router or to the switch connected to the router. I have only one gateway to gateway vpn setup to another remote office with the exact same setup. I also have the PPTP server enabled with 2 clients that are getting IP addresses when they connect.
    Any help will be appreciated.
    Thanks,

I’d like to know if Cisco/Linksys would even entertain opening up PPTP to more than 5 connections?  The problem is QuickVPN has been less than reliable for far too long (it might be another 2 years before it works on Win7 once it ships given the time it’s take to solve Vista issues) and users hate using it even when it can be made to work.  The fact is PPTP connections on a Windows machine (I'm betting 95% or more of Cisco-Linksys customers use Windows) are simple and rock solid.  What I'd like to see is the limits for VPNs apply to all connection types meaning if the 082 will allow 100 total connections then it should be able to take 90 PPTP and 10 IPSec or the other way around or any other compbination.  It's a false assumption that PPTP is a MS-only protocol.  It's actually RFC 2637 http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc2637.html and had others involved too.  As it's an RFC there shouldn't be any royalties, though I'm not an attorney.  It's also yet to be breached so it’s trustworthy.  Windows, Mac OS X, and recent builds of Linux all have native PPTP clients.  Exactly none of them include QuickVPN clients and I seriously doubt any ever will.  It only makes sense to make connections as easy as possible.  I do find the 082’s PPTP server very solid so I would like to see it better utilized.
One other thing that needs to be added to the VPN options of all Linksys products is bad logon attempt lockout options.  Right now, unless I’m missing something, there’s no way for me to say ‘if you attempt to login x # of times with the wrong username or pwd your IP or username is blocked for x minutes or until an administrator unlocks your account.’  How are the rest of you handling potential dictionary hack attempts to VPN accounts?

Thank your you feedback  on the RV082, It's always good to hear what our customer says about our product  and how they can be improved
Currently the RV082 is an  old product and we are not planning to add any more features. We will consider  looking at your recommendation in feature products
