RV220W - Connecting to TiVo mothership w/ ProtectLink

I'm using ProtectLink on my RV220W, and since activating, my TiVos are unable to connect to the mothership to get program data (fails at negotiation). I've tried to isolate it to a given setting, but if any single ProtectLink option is enabled, be it URL filtering, or web reputation, it will fail. I have to completely disable all features in order for it to successfully connect (effectively shutting ProtectLink off completely).
I've tried white listing both the TiVo IP addresses in "Approved Clients" as well as white listing tivo.com in URL/Keywords, but to no avail. I've even tried creating firewall rules specifically allowing these connections, but it seems to have something to do with how ProtectLink is implemented on the RV220W gateway (can't say I fully understand yet how ProtectLink does its blocking [unless it uses the ProtectLink servers as a proxy or something]).
Anyway, any help is appreciated. I'd like to be able to use ProtectLink if it's effective, but none of my attempts to get TiVo going is working!

I had the same issue you are describing. For some reason, none of my TiVos would connect to the Internet through the RV220W.
I found the cause of this issue. This is due to Content Filtering being active. When you turn on the Content Filtering, it automatically blocks some ports, preventing TiVo from connecting to the services. The Content Filtering also creates another issue, which prevents you from being able to apply Firewall rules to allow the TiVo to communicate with the services.
The issue with Content Filtering, is how it disables the Firewall. For some reason, upon activating the Content Filtering, all Firewall rules are unknowningly disabled. Any rules, either Allowing or Blocking anything are automatically bypassed as if they don't exist. I found this to happen in both 1.0.0.26 and 1.0.1.0 firmwares.
Hopefully Cisco will be able to recreate the issue of Content Filtering bypassing Firewall rules, and a resolution will be presented. Meanwhile, in order to use TiVo you need to keep Content Filtering disabled, and define with Firewall all websites (by IP address) that you'd like to block.

Getting my router set up was quick and easy, but now I have a problem that has me stumped. I am not a router expert, so need help.

Interestingly enough, as soon as I plugged in our old trusted ActionTec, my Tivo connected without a problem, and I got my Motorola NIM100 to stop blinking. Go figure. On the phone now with Verizon (on hold) to figure this out. If not, it's going back.

RV220W - Connect to SSL VPN using Win7 Built-In SSTP

I'm relatively new to establishing VPN connections and I'm having one heck of a time getting everything configured.
I'm setting up a RV220W at the office and trying to get VPN steup. I've have gotten Quick VPN connections working using the QuickVPN software. I've given up for now on IPsec VPN connactions and will come back to these later.
What I'd like to get setup is the SSL VPN connections using the Win7 built in VPN client. Is this even possible? I initially tried to connect to the VPN via the SSL Web access but I cannot get the software/divers to install on any of the 3+ Win7 64 bit machines I tried.
So can the SSL VPN on the RV220W be setup to connect to with the Win7 VPN Client using SSTP?
Any links or guidance on how to setup the cerificates on the server and where to install them on the Client PCs? I think this is my major issue right now as the error I get when I try to connect is either: "The certificate's CN name does not match the passed value" (Error Code: 0x800B010F) or " A certificate chain processed, but terminated in a root certificate which is not trusted by the trust provider" (Error Code: 0x800B0109). I'm trying to use self signed certifcates and I'm not sure if that is the issue (self signed vs genuine) but I really am not getting anywhere with this.
Also, the VPN does not have a FQDN just a static IP if this matters.
While I'm at it, I'd also gladly take any good links for IPsec on the RV220W but I wont be tackling that until SSL & the certificates are setup.

OK. Sorry to reply to myself but I got a few steps further. I figured I'd post how in case anyone needs to references this in the future or correct something I've done wrong.
So I've decided to use a Self Signed Certificate.
First I went to the Certificate page on the RV220W Config
Select Generate Certificate and fill in the info. As I'm not using a FQDN but a static IP, I set the Name, Subject & IP address all to the same, static IP.
I generated that and then hit view to copy the CSR
From there you need to generate a certificate.
I used Getacert (http://www.getacert.com/signacert.html)
I pasted the CSR into the text box and hit SubmitCSR
Make sure you save the getacert public certificate and your own signed certificate
Back in the RV220W Certificate page, upload the getacert.cer to the Trusted Certificate section and your own self certificate to Active Self Certificates Table
This should generate a new Cert for the router and you will have to reaccept it to get back to the web config
Back in the Cert page again, Download the routers certificate.
Back on your client, import both the getacert.cer as well as the routers certificate to the "Trusted Root Certification Authorities"
These steps got me closer.
Now when I try to connect using the Win7 VPN Client with SSTP I get a new error: Error Description: 0x800704D4: The network connection was aborted by the local system.
Any idea how to resolve this on the RV220W?

- DHCP request are not always answered
- ping's in a network take part between 200-500 ms
- Is after the router a switch, devices are behind the switch do not work sometimes. No DHCP is working.
On the router is the actual firmware.

If you already are running the correct firmware you could check the MTU size, in this case I advise you to decrease or increase in order to find the correct size for your device.
If the issue continues you can perform a factory reset and configure the device manually just the basic configuration, because it looks like a low performance issue. I hope you find this answer useful

RV220W - Content Filtering and Tivo

After using an RV220W in the Office fdr some time I decided to upgrade my old WRVS4400N V1 with one - in line with Cisco recommendations. I am using the latest firmware 1.0.4.17.
One problem I have is that a Tivo device will not connect to its contect servers in the outside world when any Content Filtering is active. I have tried setting up a firewall rule to give complete outbound access for the device for all services but that did not help. The only thing that allows the Tivo to connect properly is to either turn off Content filtering completely - in which case some of the router protection is lost, or to select some other port in the HTTP port selection box (I tried port 79) - in which case content protection functionality on port 80 is also lost. I have also tried turning off (deselecting) all the other content filtering options but the device can still cannot connect if Content Filtering is enabled.
It seems to me that setting a firewall rule to allow ALL outbound from the device should be enough to allow connection. What is Content Filtering doing that prevents this device from connecting? And why can't I override it with the firewall rules? This seems to be the same as an old thread many releases of firmware ago: RV220W - Connecting to TiVo mothership w/ ProtectLink
Why is this the only router that seems to have this problem? Will it cause other issues?
If this is because of some internal behaviour of the ruleset then Content Filtering needs to be able to be excluded for a "trusted" internal IP address.

I've opened case # 621056469. The support engineer told me that he'll try to reproduce the problem on his side, and contact me back for remote testing on my own router. If the issue is already known, does it have some kind of ref number so that I can inform him ? Is a fix already planned for a future firmware release ?

Connecting Tivo To Time capsule

I am trying to set up a network so that I can look photos and listen to music on my new home a/v system.
I have an iBook as my primary computer.
It backs up to the time capsule.
I have a Tivo and the TIvo desktop software.
Can anyone give advice or point me to a "how to" article to accomplish this?
Is it possible to connect the time capsule and tivo via ethernet and have access to the iphoto and itunes libraries-or will the Tivo need to connect to the imac?

Possible Solution to the Problem of Connecting TiVo to AirPort Wirelessly

I recently bought an AirPort Extreme and was having problems getting my two TiVos to connect wirelessly. At first everything was fine but after a few days when either of my TiVos tried to connect automatically to download information they could not find the gateway. In researching it on the Apple Support Communities I found that others have had the same problem. I think I have found the solution.
The TiVo N-adapter connects to the WiFi in a different way than other products. For most devices you look at the networks that are available, pick yours, and then enter the password. The TiVo N-adapter, by contrast, shows two different network names for your network, one for the 2.4 Ghz and the other for 5 Ghz. For each of the two netwoks it also shows the channel being broadcast by the Apple Extreme. When I first connected my Tivos to the AirPort WiFi I chose the network name associated with the 2.4 Ghz/ Channel 1 option. At first there was no problem. Then The TiVos could not connect. I went to the AirPort Utility App on my iPad and found that the 2.4 Ghz had changed from channel 1 to channel 6 (click on the base station and then select edit, Advanced, WiFi, Radio Channels). I then manually changed it back to channel 1 and turned off the automatic feature. I have had no problem since then.

Second day and no freeze from sleep.

How do I connect a Windows 2000 PC desktop to my home network (laptop mac)

Sorry to be such a novice. I have created a wireless network with an airport express. My Macintosh laptop can connect to it without a problem and can access the internet. Next step is I want to connect my desktop PC (running Windows 2000) so that it can also connect to the internet using the wireless connection.
Do I need special equipment so the desktop can find the airport express network? How do I set it up on the PC?
Also - does anyone know the easiest way to connect a TIVO to the home network as well?

Your PC needs to have the ability to join a 802.11b/g compatible network. If it doesn't have that hardware ability, you will need to add a wireless card or wireless adapter.

Bought New Extreme, works great with Macs but can't get PC to connect

I just bought a new Airport Extreme this weekend. As promised it was a breeze to set up and things were working well until I tried to connect my TIVO and my work laptop (Windows) to the network I set up. I can't get either to connect to either the base network or the guest network with any level of security set on it. My only success has been to configure the Guest Network without security on it (but I don't like that idea).
Please help.

I don't see "Equivalent Network Password" as a selection on the Base Network screen (or any of them for that matter).
Isn't this the password for my base station and not the wireless network? Maybe that is my problem. I am trying to connect to the network and not the Base Station? I am getting confused. What I really need to do is connect my work laptop (Windows based machine) and my TIVO to the wireless network I've created (Radio Mode selected to Automatic, Channel Selection to Automatic, Security set to WPA/WPA2 Personal).

TV and TiVo - Please Help!

Okay, I have a problem that may force me to return my TV. We have 2 TV's in our house. Only one is an HDTV and BOTH have TiVo. Getting rid of TiVo is NOT an option because I love it and can't imagine life without it since having it. Also, we are obligated to keep them for the 2 year agreement or face major penalty fees. We also have DVD recorders hooked up to each tv. HOW do I add the TV to this setup. Apple has said that they have no info on how to set it up with TiVo which I find ridiculous since TiVo has so many subscribers. Can anyone help? Do you have TV and TiVo and have it working? Well, you have a few options.
If your HDTV has both HDMI and component inputs, then connect the Tivo to the component and the Apple TV to the HDMI, then use the HDTV remote to change the "source".
Or, buy a received with both HDMI and component input (and a single output to the HDTV) and use the receiver remote to change the "source".

Want to bridge two wired ethernet connections

I have a Core Duo based Mini that was just replaced with a new aluminum MacBook. I am going to re-purpose the mini as a media center device. I already have a TiVo HD unit hooked up to the same TV. The TiVo is hooked up through a wired ethernet connection, to better support streaming and the transfer large video files. Due to the visibility of the location, I would prefer not to place a hub there, and I would prefer to avoid having an extra power cord around for a hub.
I'm considering getting a USB ethernet device. Then I can connect the TiVo box to the internal ethernet port (en0) and connect the usb ethernet port (en1?) to the remainder of the network. I would then bridge the connections. Note that routing is probably not sufficient, because the other TiVo units would not detect the one on the different network. I need a bridge, which would allow all the TiVo units, including the one behind the Mini, to be on the same network and discover each other via broadcasts.
This is normally a fairly trivial thing to set up within a unix environment. I can find tons on information on how to do it in Linux. But I cannot find any info on doing this within Mac OS X.
Also, where can I find information on USB ethernet devices supported within OS X?

Even though you don't mention it, I am assuming that somewhere in this gordian mix you have a router. Beyond that, I cannot fathom what it is you are trying to do here. You may be making things way more complicated than they need be.
I think I get that you want to connect the Mini to the network (what network, though, and created by what device??? How many "networks" are there, and what are their purposes?), then connect the one and only TiVo unit you mention to the Mini, using the Mini as a "bridge."
OK, let's just start this whole thing over. You need a router. Full Stop. One router. Full Stop. That router will be connected, no doubt, to some type of modem (cable or DSL) of course, and everything else will connect to it, either wirelessly or via ethernet. One router, one network.
Now, one way to avoid having to route cables all over the place in order to connect devices via ethernet is to create a wireless network and use additional wireless devices as "bridges." THese devices would be configured to connect to the wireless network, then provide a wired ethernet connection to that wireless network. In other words, they "bridge" the two. Older Airport Express units could bridge ethernet to wireless, but no the other way around. I'm not sure if the current AEs can bridge wireless to ethernet (they might, but I'm not sure).

Lost my LAN connections, still have wi-fi

I was gone for a week on vacation, and I know the power went out during some storms. I thought everything was ok because my wireless connection to my MacBookPro and iPhones was working fine. But then I noticed that my TiVo and other stuff that I had connected to the LAN ports weren't connected.
I have my cable modem (Arris) from Time Warner Cable that has my digital phone and internet connected to the Airport Extreme, then the 3 LAN ports are connected to TiVo and a Control4 home automation controller.
I've reset the AEX a couple of times, unplugged it, unplugged the cable modem, etc...When the AEX comes on, all the LAN green lights flash on and then go off. I was able to plug the MacBookPro into one of the LAN ports and get it working through LAN for a minute by fiddling with the Airport settings, but I'm not even sure what I did and I haven't been able to get all 3 working. But the wireless works just fine.
I'm fairly sure that nothing's broken, just not doing something in the correct order to get those other ports working. Any ideas?

A couple of years ago, a brownout (and power surge) damaged an Airport Extreme and two Airport Expresses on our network. Without notice, they started failing some of the time, but not all of the time (randomly dropping connections). This issue was very difficult to trouble shoot (it took a couple of months to do this, and one of the units went out of warranty during this time period). When connected to an Apple Store network at the local Genius Bar, they didn't work at all, and so Apple replaced all three, even though one was out of warranty. Kudos to a great company for taking care of the problem, but it's important to note that I also had called tech support just before the warranty expired and documented this problem.
Unfortunately, when I reinstalled the replacements on the home office network, they still didn't work. with more help from AppleCare telephone tech support out, we determined that all three 10/100 switches on the network also had been damaged in the surge, though not the cable modem. I took the opportunity to upgrade the switches to gigabit ethernet models and later to "n" Airports.
Troubleshooting network problems can be a challenge, and it requires thorough, organized testing. Good luck.

TIVO to TIVO and Express

My two Series II TIVOs can see my AP Snow base station, the Internet (connected to my cable router via ethernet), can be see with TIVO Desktop on my iMac and Dell Win XP, but they cannot see each other. I've done all the TIVO things but no joy (used to work in another house and I don't want to move things around in this house).
My AP Express profile works fine for my wireless speakers in the back yard.
I want to setup another profile where the TIVOs will use Express when it is placed next to them. SO far that configuration eludes me.
1. I think I want to set up Express as a remote base station extending the signal so the TIVO's USB adapters get the strongest signal possible. How is this done? Speaker and USB ports will not be used on the Express.
2. I want the TIVO to TIVO transfers to either:
- go through Express wirelessly, if fast enough; or
- use an Ethernet hub attached to the Express and connect the TIVOs to the hub for "a direct hard wire transfer". The TIVOs still need to get to the internet via the AP main base station for their updates.
I'm not sure WDS will work:
- there are two non-Apple) Linksys USB 802.11b and one Dell Mini WiFi 11b adapters) in play.
- can separate WDS and Itunes speaker profiles co-exist?
If WDs will work, how do I set up up? It sounds like a pain to correct if I get it wrong.
Before upgrading to 802.11g, I'm holding out for 11n and mixed adapter support from Apple.

All I can tell you is how I set it up. I have 2 Macs, a Xbox 360, 2 dual tuner series II TiVos, and a single tuner series II TiVo, all running on a wireless 802.11g network created with a AirPort Extreme and an AirPort Express. I live in a townhouse, so we run 128 bit WEP (since the TiVos won't recognize WPA security) with a 13 digit password (dictated by the Xbox). All TiVos use official TiVo brand 11g USB adapters, and the Xbox uses it's 360 brand adapter. The Express is wirelessly slaved to the Extreme using the AirPort Utility, so I can play my iTunes downstairs on the iMac right next to the Extreme and direct it through the speakers plugged into the Express upstairs. Works like a charm, all the while allowing the transfer of programs recorded on 1 TiVo wirelessly to any other TiVo. The only problem is that the TiVos tend to restart every once and a while. It happens if you leave it alone for a few hours, and then attempt to watch something. If you unplug the wireless adapter it won't restart. TiVo support recognizes the problem and are supposedly working on a fix. They only know it is a problem with wireless adapters so they haven't promised when they will fix it. Any way, I hope this helps.
Oh yeah, I forgot that my wife is also on the network with her piece of crap Dell laptop and a T-Mobile wireless card.

Get a simple ethernet Hub or Switch and connect that to the LAN port and then connect the PC and the Tivo to the Hub.
