RV320 slow DHCP

We have a RV320 router. To our knowledge, we use it with out-of-the-box setings, all clients get the LAN ip-address via DHCP from the RV320.
The problem is the time it takes for the RV320 to hand out an ip-adress, it takes between 1-2 minutes, both in the case when a new client is connected and in the case when a client is re-booting and initates a new request.
We are usung the latest firmware v1.1.1.06.

I Martin,
We have same problem with RV320. There are only about 20 APs requiring an IP. Most of the times, the APs reboots.
Tried also with RV180. Analysed with wireshark, the clients lauched DHCP requests 5 times before RV started to answer. If the client (APs in this case) have a timeout for getting IP, then reboot themselfs most of the times before the RV routers started to respond.
Thanks in advance,
Raúl.

  • Slow dhcp with ESW 520

    Hi ,
it's probably a setting to do on ESW 520 but all my DHCP is slow when I use ESW 520.
With an other switch, I haev no problem.
    Any Idea?
    Thanks

    Hi Thomas,
I have already define the Profile type (Desktop, Switch,...) with the VLAN for all the port.
But before make something wrong with the spanning tree configuration, I have one question, I learn that port fast negotiation shouln't be use with Switch Port Role but Only with Desktop Port Role. Can you say me if it's right?
    Thanks for your answer.

  • Open DNS and internet sharing

I am seeing strange behavior, and wondering if anyone has a thought about what is going on.
I am at a hotel with fast internet service over ethernet, but, for whatever reason, DNS seems very slow if I use DHCP to connect (timeouts of 5-10 secs to get to a new site). If I switch to DHCP with fixed DNS, and use the Open DNS servers (208.67.222.222, 208.67.220.220) the latency issues go away.
The interesting thing is that I am sharing the internet connection over Airport to my wife's computer (she connecting thru DHCP). If I use a fixed DNS for MY computer, then her computer cannot connect thru internet sharing. But if I use the (slow) DHCP connection, then she can connect through mine. I have not tried setting up her computer with a fixed DNS, as she really doesn't like me to change settings on her computer
Is this a known limitation of internet sharing, or is there something I should know?
    TIA

In more detail, if my ethernet (the computer that is doing the sharing), is set up with Configure: Using DHCP, and DNS Server: 208.67.222.222, 208.67.220.220 (in Network Panel for Ethernet), then the computer connecting thru Internet Sharing in Sharing Panel is not able to access some or all resources thru http (ie, pages fail to load, or do not fully load).
However, if I clear the DNS Server part in the Network Panel, thereby using the the DNS Servers supplied by the hotel, then my computer's connection to the internet is slower, with long waits (presumably due to a slow DNS server), but computers accessing the internet via Airport thru my shared connection are able to browse the internet successfully.
I suspect that when I have a fixed DNS server in my computer, that fact is not broadcast to computers using the shared connection. But I am not an expert in TCP/IP, and may well be confused about how DHCP, DNS, and Apple's Internet Sharing work together.
Thanks for any ideas you have

  • Network startup

At home I have my laptop with arch linux connected to my computer downstairs and the network is configured using dhcp. When I take my laptop with me to work it is not connected however and it sits there trying to connect to a computer that isn't there because it is not hooked up to anything. After a while it decides the network is down and gives me a login prompt.
Is there a way to reduce the time it waits before it gives me a prompt?
I have looked in the /etc/rc.d/network script but that doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me.
Anyone have any ideas on this? (perhaps reducing the time it waits is a bad idea...I dunno)
    Thanks!
    HC

... adding a "-t 12" to the ifup() /etc/rc.d/network was the first thing i changed after installing arch on my laptop and booting offline the first time waiting 1min ... it is a nice workaround (you have to use on some distros with simmilar startup-scripts) but it leads to some not nice things:
-> if you connect again to a LAN, you have to start the network manually (# /etc/rc.d/network start)
-> in shutdown-sequence, it will complain about network not running
=> it works, of course, but as i'm a semi-perfectionist, i was thinking about another way to solve the 1min-waiting:
i wanted to actually background "dhcpcd" imediately after start, so that the bootprocess can go on and the "dhcpcd" waits in the background for an answer the whole 60s
(at the UNI, we have a really slow dhcp-server, that if i had the -t to less than 28 i dont get an ip :-( but on the other side, i dont want to wait 29s to know that there is no LAN connected to my laptop)
unfortunately the dhcpcd has no option to go to background
-> anybody to know how to say the dhcpcd to go to background (without rewriting the whole startup-scripts!)?
then i got an idea about another way to handle this: what about changing the /etc/rc.multi to offer to press a key (e.g. "n" == "This Daemon? [N]o thanx!") while a daemon is starting to stop the starting of this daemon
the advantage of a such solution: you dont need to set an timeout-value which may hinder you to connect to a LAN that responds slowly or have to wait for nothing
:::: the problem is: i have no idea how you can do this () --- gurus, please help ... the part that has to be changed looks now like this:
    # Start daemons
    for daemon in "${DAEMONS[@]}"; do
    if [[ `echo $daemon | grep '^[^!]' | wc -l` -eq 1 ]]; then
    /etc/rc.d/$daemon start
    fi
    done
-> shortly said: i want to be able to kill "/etc/rc.d/$daemon start" while it is running by pressing only one key on my keyboard

  • RV220W Beta Firmware 1.0.4.17

Is anyone else using the Beta firmware?
    There are some improvements.
One can now view alerts and notifications within the software.
Also it appears as if the Protect Link Block Page was reworked to allow direct acces to Trand Micro Website for checking out Blocked URLS.
I also think CPU and memory usage is much improved.
Small Business Support can provide the firmware.

I agree with the thought of Cisco needing to take the SMB market seriously.
I suppose some of the issue, like you alluded to is the division of the products between
Enterprise, Enterprise for Small Business, & Small Business.
Enterprise Grade products are Configurable,Complex & not Plug & Play. Their small business counterparts on the contrary need to be easy to use & easy to setup, but instead they retain some of the complexity of their big brothers.
I was advised to buy an SA520, but chose the RV220W because of price.
That said I do like my RV220W over the Sonic Wall TZ100. As far as ZYXEL their product lijne is somewhat limited.
With Cisco I know they have a full line-up of compatible products for the majority of my needs. The products are well built & generally work well with one another.
I do really like the QOS per VLAN on the RV220W as well as the Protect Link Filter. Also the SSL VPN Portal is a really neat idea -it just doesn't work in Windows 7.
Hopefully we see some of the issues addressed in the next firmware update like slow DHCP assignment, lack of clear logs for Protect Link, & an Easy VPN setup wizard. Actually setup Wizards for everything would be great.
    Feature Requests:
    Port Forwarding Wizard
    Protect Link Wizard
    VPN Setup Wizard
QOS Setup Wizard (with AUTO VOIP setting?)
Live logs from all systems including Protect Link.
    IPS (in a simplified form)
Connect Protect link & Firwall Conten Filtering.
Allow SSLVPN Portal to work with Windows 7, Windows 8, IE9, Firefox, & Chrome.

  • I want to use Back to my mac. When I try to turn it on, it says "Back to My Mac may be slow because more than one device on your network is providing network services.   Turn off NAT and DHCP on one of the devices and try again." How do I fix this?

Not sure if I am doing this right. This is my first time in the support community.
I imagine what I put in my heading was supposed to go in here.
I want to use Back to my mac. When I try to turn it on, it says "Back to my mac may be slow because more than one device on your network is providing network services. Turn off NAT and DHCP on one of the devices and try again. See the documentation that came with your device for information about turning off network services"
Does anyone know how I do this? I contacted my ISP (Telus in Canada) and they did not know anything (not that they usually do).

Why do ISPs insist upon making things so difficult for their customers?
If you cannot get them to understand that you would prefer to use your own router over their piece of cheap junk, perhaps the information in the following will be useful:
    http://keithbalomben.wordpress.com/2012/03/29/telus-actiontec-v1000h-hacks-and-i nformation/
    Scroll down to DHCP Settings
You will need to log in with proper "technician" credentials. They are provided in the above link as
    Username: tech
    Password: t3lu5tv
... but these may or may not work. Try it, and if you cannot get anywhere at least now you know what to ask Telus to do in return for your business.

  • Establish IP from DHCP but no Internet or Extremely Slow

Synopsis: Net Macmin, New Ethernet Cat 6 cable (approx. 90 ft), DSL Comtrend Router.  IP Connects, slow to no internet.
Added a 90' cable and ends across store basement from front PC to router in rear of business.  Standard non-crossover Cat 6 cable properly crimped.  Get IP Address from DHCP on front MacMini but internet is extremely slow.  I re-ran the cable away from parallel to power conduit, still extremely slow.  The light on the port which this cable is plugged in flashes at high rate with no pause, unlike three other connected to router.
Front MacMini works fine over wifi, but retail software recommended ethernet connection to ensure reliability should interference occur over wifi.  When I'm testing the Ethernet I do shut off the wifi and have, since started testing, changed the service order so wifi is second chosen to ensure tesitng with ethernet is accurate when wifi is on.
When you try to load a webpage (I used google) through safari it loads 25% of the load bar and stops until it times out a few second later.  Used network utility to verify connection to goolge, it took a few seconds longer than wifi but was able to ping google.  I don't own a ethernet tester and would rather not buy one for one project.
Based on the ability to connect with IP address tells me the cable is able to talk back and forth with the router, correct?  I've read a lot about ethernet port issues, how common is this, what else could be causing the problem?
Internet Source: MyFairPoint DSL for Business
Network Hardware: Comtrend AR-5381u DSL Router
Other Hardware on Router: Second MacMini, Dell Tower, Color HP LaserJet
Thank you to whomever can help and everyone that lends feedback!

My plan is to bring my MBP to the shop later this week to test this out.  I wanted to put this out there to see if any other troubleshooting ideas were brought up.  Thanks for the input!

  • RV320 DHCP and WAN questions

    Hello all,
So far I love the RV320 its super fast and works really good (with 2 WAN connections).
I though have a few questions hoping someone could tell me:
    1) Under DHCP Server it gives the option of to use DNS from ISP or DNS Proxy, what is the main difference between those two options?
Right now I have this set to DNS from ISP.
    2) What are the pros and cons of enabling IPV6 DHCP and what is the best setting for that (Yes both ISPs I have suppor IPV6)?
    3) What is the best option to set as client lease time for DHCP? (its set to 1440 default).
    4) On the System Summary page I see both WAN1 and WAN2 connected (i set it to
Load Balance (Auto Mode) but for WAN2 i always see: Connected (Inactive)
    Why does it say inactive?
    Thank you!

Found answers to most things now except for:
    4) On the System Summary page I see both WAN1 and WAN2 connected (i set it to
Load Balance (Auto Mode) but for WAN2 i always see: Connected (Inactive)
    Why does it say inactive?

  • Using firestarter, dhcp..very slow

    help,
I have one internet connection that I am wanted to share with a second computer. I am now using firestarter to do this.
The second computer connects via dhcp, and it almost works, only, the connection is very slow; it can connect to google, for example, but the google logo does not load completely (or maybe its just so slow to load).
the internet speed is fine on the router computer.
do you have any ideas on solving this?
    thank you so much.

Galdona wrote:(and it is also very slow even when i use the ip address instead of url, eg 216.239.39.99)
when DHCP is slow sounds like packets are getting delayed or not being let through at all. try modifying your firestarter/iptables configuration.

  • RV320: DHCP Option 82 + DHCP relay at Ethernet switch

We purchased a RV320 router and want to use the DHCP Option 82 IP Assignment in combination with a ZyXEL GS1910-24 Smart Managed Switch.
The switch is able to insert Option 82 Circuit-IDs into DHCP requests, if they are relayed to a specific DHCP server. So there must be configured exactly one IP address of the DHCP server in the switch configuration (eg 192.168.1.1). The problem is, that the RV320 creates different IP subnets for different Circuit-IDs. So the RV320-router has multiple IPs, one unique IP per subnet (192.168.1.1, 192.168.2.1, 192.168.3.1, ...).
How can I use the Option 82 IP assignment with this configuration?
Is a routing/firewall rule at the RV320 a solution (to forward DHCP requests from subnet specific IP - eg 192.168.3.1 - to exactly one IP, eg 192.168.1.1)?

    mpyhala,
seems not to work as the RV320 is restricted to 6 custom VLANs (+ 1 Management VLAN with ID 1).
Maybe I should describe the whole scenario, which should be implemented:
The configuration is like for a small hotel: each room should be logically seperated from each other (no inter-room traffic for security) and each rooms bandwidth should be managed.
Bandwidth management at the RV320 relies on IP addresses. So I need to achieve somehow, that a room (= port number on switch) is always assigned a specific IP address.
14 rooms should be covered in that way.
The problem is currently the link IP<->Switch Port. I thought DHCP option 82 is the way to go, but VLANs (one VLAN for each room) may be also a solution. Unfortunately none of the two ways work.
What can be a solution? Was the RV320 the wrong decision (not enough flexibility)?
    Thanks.

    RV320 V01
    Dear sir,
I got a issues, I have configure 2 VLAN on RV-320, VLAN 1 i have disable the DHCP, VLAN 25 i have configure DHCP Server enabled, but it seem DHCP bind on VLAN 25 is not working, then i try to config the static IP on device testing the VLAN is working, successful separate broadcast domain. and i can pint the VLAN 25 IP address, on DHCP i have re-enable VLAN 1 DHCP Server, it also working, successful assign the ip address to dynamic host.
    any advise on my issues?
    Thanks,

    echolai@califor,
i had vlan disabled and vlan untagged for my RV320 in the lab, which would not hand out ip address for a different vlan. At this point at your earliest convenience open a support case so an engineer can look at the configuration in your router. If you like i can take a look at your config. Just send config to PM.

  • RV320 DHCP

    Hi,
I have configured LAN port 4 to VLAN 4 and disabled the DHCP for this VLAN, after setting the DNS server to "Use DNS from ISP".
I can't use DHCP relay, as I don't know the DHCP server from the service provider.
The objective is to get the device connected to LAN port 4 an IP address from the service provider (WAN1) while devices on the other LAN ports are served by router's DHCP (which works fine by the way).
Although I have excluded LAN 4 from the default VLAN (1), the device is still getting an IP address from the routers DHCP.
What am I doing wrong ?
    Christophe

    > basically bridging LAN4 to the WAN...
yes, but I am afraid that RV320 doesn't support such thing. simply you have to use switch ( 5-8 ports non managable switch is enough) and connect it between ISP and RV320. And put your TV to that switch so it can reach ISP network directly and receive desired address.
    > I can't use DHCP relay, as I don't know the DHCP server from the service provider.
Even if you know IP of ISP DHCP server, DHCP relay function will not work like you expected and you will not receive any IP address for TV box. The reason is that DHCP relay is adding gateway IP (i.e. it's own IP address of receiving interface) into DHCP request (giaddr field of the DHCP packet) which point DHCP server to look for free IP from correct DHCP IP address pool. And because of that giaddr field, DHCP request did not match any existing IP pool (yes, because DHCP server did not recognize your internal subnet in it's own database) and no any DHCP offer will be provided...

  • RV320 Question about IPv6 DHCP

    Hello everyone,
Been running the RV320 for quite some time but now I also want to use IPv6 support for all clients and to the net. On WAN1 I have a fiber connection to my ISP who gave me a bunch of IPv6 adresses and IPv4 (IPv4 already being configured and working!).
Now all clients for IPv4 locally use 192.168.1.x and ofc i have set some external IPv4 adresses to internal IPv4 adresses by using One-to-One NAT.
I want to setup IPv6 DHCP on our network aswell and went to DHCP setup > IPv6 and then clicked DHCP SERVER.
    I filled in these fields:
    IPv6 adress: fc00::1
    Prefix length: 7
DHCP Server and for DNS the google's:
    2001:4860:4860::8888
Should that be it? Or do i also need to configure the IPv6 Address Pool Table stuff? And if so, how?
I basically want the same as IPv4, so just internal IPv6 adresses which should translate to the outside just like with IPv4.
Also under WAN1 i have WAN Connection Settings:
What shouldb e filled in under: LAN IPv6 Address: ?? i have :: right now there.
    Can anyone help me?

    Hello Michiel,
The following link has some useful information about setting up DHCPv6 server on RV320.
    http://sbkb.cisco.com/CiscoSB/ukp.aspx?vw=1&docid=5d6de1bfe4c1488fb51b75cb76dd0ef6_DHCPv6_Configuration_and_Monitoring_on_RV320_Router.xml&pid=2&respid=0&snid=9&dispid=0&cpage=search
Also, the admin guide (Chapter 3, Page 19) provides some good information about IPv6 support on the RV320, especially around DHCP-PD. If the Service provider supports DHCP-PD (prefix delegation), then you can just enable the feature on RV320 and the clients behind the router (including LAN interface on the router) get IP address directly through the ISP.
    Hope this helps.
    Regards,
    Nagaraja

  • RV320 - Buggy, slow performance, unreliable POS

    Hi
This has been a frustrating experience to say the least. I've spent way too much time trying to get this thing to work properly, to no avail...
    1. Performance gets slow (EXTREMELY slow) when the RV320 uptime is more than 24 hours. Reboot it and it runs acceptable. This clearly indicates some kind of errors with the firmware.
    2. Buggy UI (invalid SSL certificate, Chrome won't even let you admin this thing). The source code for the UI is truly horrible, but i'm not surprised. I'm surprised it works at all.
    3. No firmware updates for OVER A YEAR now (but RV320 hasn't been EOLed). Release notes mentions known issues, but Cisco clearly isn't interested in fixing them.
    4. Slow performance (both WAN and LAN) as mentioned above, can't even stream movies over LAN. I'm seeing 30-60 Mbps throughput over local network, when it's supposed to be a gigabit router... (Yes, I've turned off all security features which could slow things down such as SPI, etc). Yes, I've tried MTU sizes in multiples of 28, I've tried everything.
Cisco promises performance, security and reliability for RV320. But in my experience, you can only pick one of the three.
I've heard somewhere on this forum that a alpha firmware is available, please send it to me and I'll try it out.

With reservations, I tried this router.  The reservations came from reading of the obvious resource leak in the firmware.  I bought it anyway.  I get exactly the same behavior.  I have to reboot each morning.  Not a solution.  I have a VoIP phone system also; I cannot afford to lose Internet connectivity.  I updated to the 1.1.1.19 firmware of 2014-12.  Didn't help.
I have had the same DLink gateway for about ten years, but, I need something faster now. It actually has some better features and a better user interface than this Cisco unit.
BTW, I can't connect to it with Chrome; Chrome login just return to the login screen; I have to use Firefox.
It is a shame that Cisco put their name on products such as this.  I have had the same experience with other Cisco SMB products (Did someone say Linksys?).  Their commercial products are very nice.
I decided not to frustrate myself as an engineer trying to make it work; I got an RMA to return it,.  Haven't had it but about a week.
On the upside, I got about 60Mbps throughput on my Cox connection, which is 2x what I could get with my old DLink.

  • Instalation Problem - 10g - DHCP machine - Forms too slow if connected

Just installed the latest release of Oracle Database and Developer Suite (10g) on a machine with cable connection to the Net, with DHCP.
Followed the instructions regarding the installation of the Loopback Adapter. It was not possible to follow all the instructions there since my computer is not on a domain.
In any case, I managed to get the Database and DevSuite to work.
    There is however one problem:
    - when I run a form, the browser is started, the java aplet is loaded, but then, if I am connected to the internet, it takes a very long time to load the form.
    - however, if I am disconnected from the internet, then the form loads very fast.
Does anyone have any suggestion on what the problem may be, or where to start looking?
    Thank you in advance.

Carry out a traceroute to see if you connection to your own machine is first going to the internet.
