RX3870-T2D512E-OC v102 and v803

Hi,
I've got a pair of RX3870-T2D512E-OC, one is a v803, the ohter is v120
- On the v803, I have to edit the BIOS with "Radeon BIOS Editor" (http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/1016/TechPowerUp_Radeon_Bios_Editor_v1.08.html)
and change the threshold from 73°C to 35°C , because temperature increase up to 80°C (without over clocking)
Results : going back to original BIOS because it's not stable (crash / black screen => reset)
Card still very hot : waiting for fireman
- On the v120, I flashed the bios with this one (TV120MS.zip) :
https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=114637.0
Reason : the fan allways at 80% like a vacuum cleaner : after flasing it's OK.
I bought this cards not at the same time, but when I saw the price decrease, I bought a second one to make crossfire.
But no chance : I run VISTA, the crossfire is detected, but NOT working : I have same performance with one or two cards with windows indice (maybe it is wrong ?), and bridge is connected, dual VGA activated in the motherboard BIOS.
I have patch with SP1, trying to patch with Microsoft SLI and CrossFire HotFIX (KB936710), but still not working.... no difference.
I will test in the next days with Windows XP, to see if the problem comes from VISTA.
Be carreful with bios flasing..... v120 and v803 are NOT the same card and BIOS are different : allways make backup before.
Tool for flashing :
http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/855/ATIFlash_3.49.html
Make a bootable floppy disk (without autoexec.bat / config.sys)
Get info about VGA cards : "atiflash -ai"           -> give the <adapater number> if you have more than one VGA card
Save BIOS : "atiflash -s <adaptater number> <file name>"
Flash BIOS : "atiflash -f -p <adaptater number> <BIOS file>"          ex:  "atiflash -f -p 1 TV120MS.102"
...at your own risks...

"I've installed Windows XP SP2 from a formated hard disk, I did all the update from Microsoft, installed last DirectX9.0c (march08), Catalyst 8.3 and I've the result you see on the Windows Peripherals : Windows didn't see the same card
You must know that I have 2 RX3870-T2D512E-OC but different version...."
Yes i've noticed that, but they still have to use the same driver. It can happend that catalyst update driver for the one of the cards only.
"I will try to manually force install of the same driver. I'll give you the result."
Yes
Results :
I decided to patch catalys 8.3 as BOSSKILLER said :
http://support.ati.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=894&task=knowledge&questionID=33033
During the patch install, juste before continuing with Control Center install, I forced driver "Radeon HD 3870" (driver v8.471.1.1000) instead of "Radeon HD 3800 series" which is automaticaly installed by catalyst for one VGA card : now drivers are the same for both cards.
But allways one card in catalyst.
I tried to shutdown tne PC and change the monitor plug to the 2nd VGA card : The VGA n°2 appears in catalyst (replace the n° 1).
So the card present in catayst list depends on the VGA pluged to the monitor.
Confirmation : when a 2nd monitor is pluged (both cards are connected to a monitor), and Windows desktop is extended to the 2nd monitor, then two cards are present in catalyst.
Crossfire could work, but I think that the bottleneck is my motherboard (when dual card => PCI-e at 2x 8X due to chipset limitation).
Now "Crysis Demo SP" in 1280x1024 (high) without AA is correct.
For people who want to look into 3870 bios settings, TechPowerUp has released the "Radeon Bios Editor v1.09"
When editing your bios, you can see how fan and thermal regulation works.
http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/1026/TechPowerUp_Radeon_Bios_Editor_v1.09.html
Then, you can verify that regulation isn't the same for v120 and v803
As a result :
v803 is more stable with original BIOS (modify = hang)
I've flashed it with this bios revision from ATI (VER010.075.000.002.000000) and it's in test now :
http://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/7131/ATI.HD3870.512.071226_1.html
v120 works well with "tv120ms.102"
https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=114637.0
And allways SAVE YOUR ORIGINAL BIOS BEFORE !
I am very careful about overclocking, and I prefer stable system.

Do it with software or RMA the VGA if its proved that's VGA fault.

  • HD 3870 BIOS REQUEST - RX3870-T2D512E-OC

Hi, i recently bought this MSI Video card HD3870 OC: 800MHZ GPU 1226MHZ RAM (RX3870-T2D512E-OC).
The problem is that it comes with ATI Bios Rev01: 10.67 which is buggy.
I would like to have the ATI Bios Rev02: 10.71 for my video card model.
Is it possible to make the bios and post it?
Ps: We can find a lot of HD3870 Rev02 bios for most of manufacturers but the problem is that they don't have the right clocks.
And as far as i know there is not a proper bios utility working for the moment.
I would be grateful to msi if they can make this bios.
    Best regards.

We can't tell you. This is a user to user forum.
    How to contact MSI.
Well you can close the topic if you want to, i have almost solved everthing concerning my videocard.
I have replied to wht1986 concerning is fan problem, we all have the same bad cooling system.
I changed the cooling solution for a Zalman VF1000 (kept genuine rams rads), and put gecube bios (faster and less bugs v 10.73 instead of v 10.67 for msi card).
Thanks for your help on the forum but really disappointed by msi.
I asked them for a new bios.. and the replies were astonishing..
They didn't want to send me a bios, they asked me to use their program live update, a crap which does not work on vista 64 bit.
So ask a friend with xp sp2.
In fact, i think they don't have the new bios for the moment.
Ps: I still have artefacts sometimes playing Test Drive Unlimited, maybe it's a game bug.
Playing with NFS Pro Street no problems at all.
And the card runs faster, with no noise and really low temps!

    Hello..
I have the RX3870-T2D512E OC MSI 626 913 0828 and the advertised clock speed is 2250 but the ATI OC tool as with Rivatuner say it is 1150 (I think).  The slider for memory speed slider on both tools don't even go up to 2000, so what is up?
Any info would be greatly appreciated.

There is nothing wrong, you are looking real clock speed, while the effective clock speed is double.
"The slider for memory speed slider on both tools don't even go up to 2000, so what is up?"
Don't do such experiment you can permanently damage the VGA.
1150MHz real memory clock speed = 2300 effective clock speed

Not sure but the Seagate drive I have has made a couple of noises I don't like.
I have another which is identical so going to clone this one onto that and see if it fixes the issue
You have just changed the video card, and you had the rest of your config working before?
I mean the ram is a lot of times involved in bsod (or psu).
I don't like to see the RC SP1 are you sure it is not the source of problems?
Personnaly i prefer to put the patches and wait for the final SP1.
The last Catalyst is the 8.1 + the hotfix (v 8.451.4.0).
You can try the previous one: 7.12, to see if it corrects the issue.
I am running the same video card with an X38 mobo + core2duo + vista 64 and no bsod.
You won't get a lot more from PCI-E 1.0 to 2.0, perhaps nothing more.
The PCI-E 1.0 is not fully used by actual videocards.
    i.e the the Radeon HD3870 X2 is PCI-E 1.0.
PCI-E 2.0 is pure marketing for the moment.
The X38 is the best chipset for the moment if you want a crossfire both PCI-E at x16 and the best memmory management, and also if you want a 45 nm processor.
But a lot of people prefer P35 mobo's cheaper and doing almost the same thing (with one video card).
    If you buy a core 2 duo i hope you will take a E8xxx (6Mo L2 cache... ).
    Waiting for my E8500..

  • Difference between MSI R6970-2PM2D2GD5 (V247-012R) and (V803-690R)

    Hello,
I propose to buy a MSI R6970. In the vastness of the Internet I found two types of this video card. V247-012R and V803-690R.
But I cannot find out what the difference is. Can anybody help me. Thanks for your answers.

    Difference hard can be noted..
It's down to place where's manufactured and accessories that comes with the card.

  • MSI RX3870-T2D512E-OC v803 bios

hey guys i was wondering if anyone can help me find a bios for my msi 3870-OC v803.  the reason that i am looking for this is b/c i am not satisfied with the standard bios that was released with this card.  The temps of this card are too high IMO.  I have 2 of these cards on is the v120 which has a great fan control setup and i would like one for the v803 that is similar.
the v120 has a fan table in bios that looks like this::
    Threshold temp | 0 | 50 | 70 | 80 | 85 | 90 | 95 | 100 |
    Fan speed        |52| 70| 80 | 100| 100|100 |100| 100 |
but the v803 has a fan table of::
    threshold temp | 60 | 65 | 70 | 75 | 80 | 85 | 90 | 98 |
    fan speed        | 30 | 41 | 50 | 61 | 70 | 81 | 90 | 100|
so with that being said i am wondering if there has been a bios made for the v803 with a similar table and based on the .073 bios instead of the .067 bios.  the difference in temps is huge  v120 runs 33c idle and ~45c load but the v803 runs 45c idle and ~65c-70c load.  now i know that they are well within the safe range as far as temp goes but it is my experience that the cooler something runs the longer it lasts.  I also know that the v120 is MSI's card design and the v803 is ATi's design but they use the same fan and H/S setup so one would think that they would cool the same if the fans are set the same. I have tried editing the v803 bios with RBE 109 and it doesnt seem to be accepting the new table.  so what it all boils down to is that i want to know if there is a v803 bios that have a better fan table to it.  any ideas would be great.  thank you, Von

the other option is save the bios of the v120 and apply it to the other card, if the 2 cards are based on the reference model by ATI i don't think that causes any problem at all.
You should not.... I've ever tried, but as it is not really same cards, it does not work well.
I'll test your solution with RivaTuner.
The best would be that MSI really work on VGA BIOS.... and have the possibility to download it directly as we do for motherboard, without using Live Update.
I had bad experience in the past with MSI products (several motherboard chipsets burned, capacitors, stability... without overclocking) and it's confirmed again.

  • Why does the RX3870-T2D512E-OC detect as 3800 series and not 3870?

I am wondering why does my video card detect as a 3800 series and not specifically the HD 3870?  I heard this was fixed with a bios update with Sapphire does MSI need to do the same thing with their card?

Has been for all the ATI Catalyst drivers.. what other driver is there?  The MSI Drivers are always so far behind so I don't use them of course.

  • RX3870 - T2d512e SERIOUS PROBLEM!!!

    Hi,
I bought a new 3870 last week. I installed it properly (have done it about 5 years) and turned up the system.
It only runs resolution of 800x600 (in my 22" monitor) with 4BIT COLOR DEPTH!!!!
...and the screen looks messy and about half of the pixels are missing.
After 2 hours of trying to open mozilla-firefox, i've managed to download the drivers....
BUT NOTHING HAPPEND, CATALYST JUST SAYS: "CANNOT DETECT ATIGRAPHICS CARD... BLA BLA BLA"
Is my card broken? Or do i need some bios stuff? Or do i need more powerful powersupply (i have 400W)
Other stuff you need to know:
    Intel Q9300
    Asus P5K motherboard
    2gt 800mhz DDR2

Thanks, and sorry my english :D

    OK thanks.
I think this whole thing is full of crap. When i bought the 3870, there was no mention about this. And now when i look at the 3870 box, i can find a tiny txt saying that: "This card requires at least 450W PSU" (and no mention about the amp things you guys explained).
    Why is it like this?
I think MSI should inform resellers better to avoid this kind of things happening.
...but thank you guys, you were real helpful!
Its a strange tradition but AMD/ATI always decided to leave out the Amps in their card's power requirements. If in any doubt you can always go here to find out about the PSUs recommended by AMD/ATI http://ati.amd.com/online/certifiedpsu/index.html
More Amps or watts on the PSU will not go into waste. Because if the current trend is to be followed, future generations of cards (and other components as well) is going to become more and more power hungry. And remember that the watts or amps stated on a PSU is often overrated and considering that running efficiency is only 70-80% (in good quality PSU) you are not going to get the exact watts or amps as advertised by its manufacturer.
And I strongly agree that you should atleast test out that card with a stronger PSU.

  • RX3870-T2D512E-OC warranty

Hi, I just got this card and noticed the fan was going full speed constantly, so I went to the control panel to see the temperature and all the over clocking options on the overdrive screen came unlocked, even though I haven't clicked the unlock button, does this mean my warranty is void now? I haven't touched the clock speeds at all.

It's normal for the fan to go full speed all the time.

How do I flash the bios?
I downloaded that Atiflash program and the bios but when I run the program it just comes up with a command prompt with a list of commands or something but it it says press any key to continue and when I press any key it cycles through some more commands and then closes.
Is there a readme or something for this tool?
If you don't know what you're doing I would highly advise you don't do it. You need to run atiflash via command prompt with switches.
    Here's a little how to:
Extract both .zip files to say C:\ATI, make sure the BIOS file "tv120ms.102" is in there along with the flash utility.
Open command prompt, via run. Type "cmd" in run, a new window will pop up.
You need to flash from pure DOS (I thought it was ATI winflash).
    Type: cd
Then: cd "ATI" (without speeches, and/or whatever you called the directory).
Type atiflash –0 –p tv120ms.102 (spaces are required!) and let it complete the flashing process. If it fails, DO NOT RESTART YOUR COMPUTER. Try again...

    Hi,
I have this issue... on 3 GPUs. Only one is working.  2 x 3870x2 in crossfire / Vista x64 SP1
I tried everything possible : uninstall all ATI software before, clean registry, delete files, temporary files, many uninstall and reboots, trying different settings in BIOS . Same issue.
This time I choose to install 9.2 drivers only (without Control Center), but the result is the same.
The problem appears since v8.11, but I was able to install at the end by cleaning / reinstalling many times.
v8.12, v9.1, v9.2 are impossible to install correctly on my system. I'm very disapointed.
I've been waiting about 6 month for 8.10 to have stable drivers...
Maybe installing ATI drivers should be proposed to Olympic Games category...
I asked to ATI if they have a tool to clean all previous drivers, and they suggested this link :

    Look at the utility cat-uninstaller.exe date : 10/08/2003 !!!
It's possible that the problem comes from old drivers, but I refuse to format / reinstall the system each time ATI release a new driver. I did that for 8.12 and I had the same issue.
