?'s About Transitioning from Bridge to LR

I have a couple of questions before installing LR and importing work already done through Bridge. I searched the archives but didn't see exactly what I'm looking for - apologies in advance if I missed it.
1) I have been reading about using stacks, "virtual" copies, etc. so that I don't have to have actual duplicate images. Awesome paradigm shift for future work. BUT, I'm wondering how to deal with a related scenario for previous work. I shoot raw, and I often setup a directory structure like this:
2007-03-17_soccer/ (where Raw files sit)
2007-03-17_soccer/Converted (where files converted to jpg, psd, etc. sit)
2007-03-17_soccer/Converted/5x7 (where 5x7 cropped print file sit)
My file name for a given image is the same in each of multiple directories. For example, an image might be named "img-123.jpg" in the Converted directory, the 5x7 directory, the 8x10 directory, and so on. I have tended to distinguish images based on crops, etc. via the directory structure, opting to keep file names concise so they don't get truncated when uploading to my lab.
How will LR handle this when I import? And if I use keywords for Metadata to find images under this scenario, how do I keep LR from giving me all of the duplicates. Without renaming all of my older files, is there a good way of handling this in LR when I import and set things up?
2) All of my Raw files already have XMP's in the same folders as the images. I love XMP's because they maintain my Raw conversion settings, and when I backup to CD/DVD and am ready to delete files from my hard drive, I can backup the XMP's with the files and always have my conversion settings.
When I import these existing files that already have XMP's, what will happen? Will LR recognize these existing XMP's and their ACR related settings? And what if I make additional changes to one of these Raw files via Lightroom - how would Bridge deal with this if I were to view the file in Bridge at a later date?
Thanks!
Mark

Thanks guys, appreciate the feedback.
CHRIS - you are exactly right about my FUTURE workflow. What I'm trying to figure out now is how to best handle images already processed. My import should be OK based on the way I have duplicates in separate directories, BUT I'm wondering how to avoid seeing all of these duplicates in LR when I search by keyword, etc.? I guess I can somehow flag the RAW files and only get them in my results.
One question though - Stacks, etc. sounds great for the LR processed images. But what about variations based on processing in Photoshop after the LR Develop stage? I guess in this case I will just have to keep duplicate images if I have multiple versions from my PS work?
ISAAC - Thanks for clarifying that LR will recognize my XMP files from Bridge. What about the opposite direction . . . if I edit something in LR and capture this via XMP, it won't prohibit Bridge from recognizing XMP info if I access a file via Bridge, will it?
ALSO - Do you know where I can find info about tracking via XMP vs. the central database? You mentioned a couple of valid points, but I'm not sure I have a full handle on the pros/cons of these options.
Thanks!
Mark

  • Confused about transition from MobileMe

Up until now I actually have been happy with MobileMe.  But I wanted to transition to iCloud since MobileMe will shut down at the end of June.
So today, I started the transition to iCloud.  However, I am confused about how to set up all the devices we used to use on MobileMe.  Before our family shared five computers, three iPhones, one iPod Touch and 2 iPads.  Under MobileMe, we were able to all share the calendars and contacts.  Now I have no idea how to have multiple devices share calendars and contacts.  Each person in my family has their own separate Apple ID.  Is there a way that multiple Apple ID's can share on iCloud account?  If so, how do we set that up?  I have no idea how to get one machine to see the general iCloud account.
Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

Actually, that was changed in the iOS 5.1.1 update. You can now stop the phone from defaulting to CDMA by going into Settings>General>Roaming>International CDMA and making sure it's set to "off". While it doesn't sound as if there's any harm in setting Data Roaming to off, I don't think it matters in this circumstance.

  • Transitioning from Bridge to Lightroom

I have been using Bridge and Photoshop for years, but yesterday installed Lightroom through CC.  I would like to maintain my existing naming convention and file structure for my images.  Does this involve anything other than importing my existing files into the Lightroom catalog?  Thereafter, can I continue to import images from my memory card into my existing file structure with them appearing both in Lightroom and Bridge correctly named and filed?  Does it matter whether I use Bridge or Lightroom to import my images from a memory card?  Thanks.

Anything you do in Bridge before the photos are imported into LR will be read by Lightroom and used properly.
Then, after importing a photo into Lightroom, you go back into Bridge and perform an edit on this same photo, and Lightroom doesn't know about it. The situation is easy to rectify, by again, why are we talking about using both programs? You are only setting up the opportunity for confusion and extra work, and the probability that your edits and metadata will be out of sync, where one program has one set of edits and the other program has a different set of edits!
As far as the disadvantages to automatically writing to xmp, I would say they are minor, but others disagree and I'd probably want to let those individuals speak for themselves. In the Lightroom forum (not the Lightroom for Beginners forum), Rob Cole has spoken many times about why he doesn't like this option. You should probably search for his comments.

  • Advice about transitioning from a Forms developer to Oracle Applications.

    Hi guys,
I need some advice and input about the subject.
I have been an Oracle programmer for 8+ years and worked on various versions
of the database and front end tools upto the lastest versions.
With extensive experience in forms, how smooth would the transition be to
being a technical programmer in Oracle Applications / EBS 11i/12.
Since the applications front end in build on Oracle Forms platform,
what more would I need to get a position as a Technical Consultant?
Do I need a very strong understanding of subject areas like accounting, supply chain etc...
I intent to certify in at least the Financial modules.
I would appreciate any input on this subject.

  • What should I know about transitioning from original iPad to New iPad?

I'm about to set up my new iPad -- I have an old, first generation iPad. What do I need to know?

What sort of thing do you want to know ? If you want the same content on the new iPad as you've got on the old one then copy all purchases off it to your computer's iTunes via File > Transfer Purchases and then do a backup (right-click the iPad device on the left-hand side of iTunes), and then restore that backup onto the new iPad (you will need to enter email, router and other passwords on the new iPad, the restore won't copy them onto it)

  • Adapting workflow from Bridge to Lightroom

Migrating from Bridge to Lightroom and looking for suggestions on organizing RAWs/jpgs to optimize transition? My files are a mess with many duplicates as well as jpgs and RAWs in the same folders.  Thanks!

The best advice I can give you is that Lightroom is different than Bridge. If you followed a sequence of steps in Bridge, do NOT insist on following the same sequence of steps in Lightroom. Lightroom offers you many paths to get to the end result, and often these paths are simpler and more powerful than getting to the same result in Bridge.
looking for suggestions on organizing RAWs/jpgs to optimize transition?
In my opinion, this is extremely simple. Your RAWs and JPGs should stay exactly where they are now. Do not move them even one millimeter, or to another folder. Import into Lightroom using the ADD option.
My files are a mess with many duplicates as well as jpgs and RAWs in the same folders.
Lightroom should be able to weed out the duplicates (if they are true duplicates).
JPGs and RAWs in the same folder????? This is HORRIBLE, I tell you, HORRIBLE. You should be shot!!!!! (This is sarcasm, of course) Leave them alone. Don't worry about it. Lightroom doesn't care. You can achieve organization even if you leave things the way they are now. Everything works fine the way I do it, which is JPGs and RAWs and TIFs and maybe even a PSD and a video in the same folder.
Use Lightroom tools from now on to organize and search. These tools are keywords, captions and other metadata. Put your energy into using these Lightroom tools, and not a single drop of energy into re-arranging and re-organizing your folders. The Lightroom tools are specifically designed for photos, and result in a much more powerful organization than anything you could develop by re-organizing your folders. Folders are no longer an organizing tool, they are simply the place where your photos are stored.

I have .me and .mac email accounts on my iPhone 4. I thought I had successfully transitioned from MobileMe to iCloud, but something must be wrong. iCloud seems to work fine on my computer and, with the exception of two email accounts, seems to be fine on my phone. Can/should I delete the accounts on my phone and start over? It is somewhat of a nuisance to have two email accounts and double the amount of emails. The only thing different about the two iCloud accounts is the email addresses. Thanks.

Well, seems I managed to unscrew this...I deleted my iCloud mail account and reinstalled it on my phone. That got rid of the duplicate .me/.mac email accounts.

  • Why do i keep getting "image is missing preview data" when trying to move files from bridge to PS ??

I am not able to move multiple files to PS...regardless whether I am doing HDR or panorama.....get this "image is missing preview data" with the first file number of the series of files.
    #missingpreviewdata

You don't "move" anything from Bridge "into" Photoshop.  You use Bridge to call on Photoshop to come and open the file(s), and Bridge simply hands the files over to Photoshop.
The problem lies in how the files are being processed and saved.
No one can help you until you provide complete and sensible details.

exact versions of your OS, of Photoshop (not just "CS6", but something like CS6v.13.0.6) and of Bridge,
your settings in Photoshop > Preference > Performance
the type of file you were working on,
machine specs, such as total installed RAM, scratch file HDs, total available HD space, video card specs, including total VRAM installed,

    what error message(s) you receive,
if having issues opening raw files also the exact camera make and model that generated them,
if you're having printing issues, indicate the exact make and model of your printer, paper size, image dimensions in pixels (so many pixels wide by so many pixels high). if going through a RIP, specify that too.
    etc.,
someone may be able to help you (not necessarily this poster, who is not a Windows user).
a screen shot of your settings or of the image could be very helpful too.

  • Importing material from Bridge to AE (beginner)

In a recent AE tutorial I was enjoying, I was prompted to go to animation and browse presets to try them out, which launches Bridge.  When I double clicked the preset I wished to use, AE displayed a message:  After Effects error:  Can't import file, unsupported filetype or extension.  The extension after every effect in Bridge is:  ffx
I tired calling Adobe, but held endlessly...
    Thanks!!!

Animation presets aren't files that you import. They are collections of layer properties that you apply to layers. Applying them from Bridge is (I think) a pain; it's much easier to apply them through the Effects & Presets panel. See this page for information about applying animation presets (and effects). See this page for an overview of what animation presets are and how you work with them.
But, really, since you're new to After Effects, I very strongly recommend that you begin from the beginning and work your way through the getting-started resources here:

This forum is actually about the Cloud, not about using individual programs
Once your program downloads and installs with no errors, you need the program forum
If you start at the Forums Index http://forums.adobe.com/index.jspa
You will be able to select a forum for the specific Adobe product(s) you use

  • From Bridge To PS To Export - EXIF Data Lost

    Hi all,
I'm wondering what happens to my EXIF data when I import a Canon RAW file via ACR from Bridge to PS. When I export the file as a JPG and then right-click the jpg properties, none of the camera data is recorded. Perhaps there is a tick-box I've just not ticked?
Also, if I add keywords in Bridge, should they carry through the export process? I'm interested to know if it's possible to auto complete the keyword field in flickr when uploading an image.
    CS5 with W7 and Canon 5Dii RAW.
    Thanks in advance.

Can you be a little more explicit about the exact steps you're taking?
I just opened an image from Bridge into Photoshop by right-clicking a CR2 file, choosing Open In Camera Raw, then hitting the [Open] button in the Camera Raw dialog.  Then I did File - Save As - JPEG, and all the camera metadata was retained (per Explorer's Properties, Details tab).
When you say "export", exactly how are you saving the file?  With File - Save For Web & Devices, there's a Metadata field that allows you to specify how little or how much to keep.

  • Output workspace missing from Bridge CC

Why has the Output workspace been removed from Bridge CC??????

    Hi Bluebell,
Yes the Output such as web gallery, has been removed.  I am not very happy about it either since I packaged all of my clients "off line" proofs this way. It was fast and simple... Oh wait, fast and simple... That's why Adobe cut it out.
Their solution is to waste clock cycles on your system by using Lightroom 5 which I have utterly no use for. Seeing as there is no real improvement to bridge and they basically just slaped the"CC" designation on it, they could have easily left it in.
It's amazing that they have brilliant software engineers but nobody with brains enough to make logical marketing decisions.

  • Can't Open jpeg files from Bridge CS3 to PhotoShop CS3

This is really weird. I had a trial version of CS3 and bridge worked fine. That ran out, so I tried CS2 to see if I could get by with the older version. CS2's bridge worked just fine.
Then I installed a full version copy of CS3 and removed CS2 (to free up space) and for some bizarre reason, I cannot open any files from bridge into Photoshop. It's the CS3 bridge because I clicked on the Help, About Bridge and it showed CS3.
When I just click "open" under file, it tries to open with Illustrator. When I click, "open with" I get this list: Adobe Illustrator CS3 (default), Firefox 2.0, Internet Explorer 6.00, and Paint 5.1.
I can't figure out a way to change the default to CS3, and it worked fine with the trials.
    Please advise.

It was a nice thought. I just did it, and associated all .jpg type files with photoshop, but no such luck in solving issue. I did figure out a way around it that kinda works, but not nearly as convenient. I drag select a group, then hold-click on the group and toggle into Photoshop, then let go. It pastes the group there. However, if I control click to select a group (or deselect within a group), I can't hold-click. So I have to do smaller groups at a time if I want to bypass certain pictures that get grabbed in a bigger group--does that make any sense at all?
