[S]iMac with additional monitor: built-in monitor turns off at startup

Hi,
I'm using an iMac Intel (2007) with an external monitor. I used to have the external one on the left and the iMac on the right.
Everything was fine until today, when I *just* moved external monitor on the right and changed my xrandr script like this:
xrandr --output LVDS --mode 1680x1050 --pos 0x0 --rotate normal --output DIN --off --output DVI-0 --mode 1920x1080 --pos 1680x0 --rotate normal
The thing is that now when I turn on the computer the built in monitor turns off as the startup process reaches the Xorg phase.
Do you have any ideas about why this happens?
I didn't touch the Xorg configuration at all, when I installed the system both monitors were recognized correctly.
Thanks in advance!

Hi karkhaz,
Yes, computer is usable with just the external monitor, as a temporary workaround I'm running a `xset dpms force off` to turn off and on again both monitors.

my iphone came up with that timing circle and just turned off and did not come back on ? even when i charge it now it still wont turn on ,do you know the problem?

If the battery was empty (and it may then take 10 to 15 minutes of charging before it will respond), then have you tried a reset ? Press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds, after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the equivalent of a reboot.

  • After 15 mins  with no activity my airport express turns off how can I make it permanent

After about 15 mins with no activity my airport express turns off. How can I make it stay on permanently ?

Not sure what you mean by "turns off".  Are you saying that the light on the Express goes out after 15 minutes?
Assuming that it is functioning correctly, the AirPort Express is "always on". It has no type of "sleep" setting.
If the power light on the Express remains on, you have some other device on the network that is going into a standby mode or sleep mode. Check the Preference settings on other devices on the network.

  • 24" Intel iMac with Samsung T220 as second monitor

    Hello!
Recently got an iMac with a Radeon 4850 video card which I am generally very pleased with, however..
Before I got it I used a Samsung T220 as my main monitor which provided a crisp and colourful display. When I got the iMac I decided to use it as a second monitor so ordered a miniDisplay port to DVI adaptor.
Now the issue is that while it appears to be allowing the T220 to output to it's maximum resolution (1680 x 1050) the picture still appears to be blurry. On top of this the colours appear washed out and the contrast (20,000:1) seems very low compared to when I used the monitor with my PC.
I've spent hours attempting to calibrate the monitor and playing around with colours and settings. I am using the DVI-D cable supplied with the Samsung.
Any thoughts? Do I need to update any drivers or software or is it something more fundamental.

Some display settings are stored in PRAM, so if you have not done so already, try resetting PRAM
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
If there is a reset button on the display (often a recessed button), or a reset-to-default command in the display's on-screen menu, try using that as well.
There was one firmware update involving that video card

It may already be installed. You can check your current Boot ROM Version by running System Profiler and selecting Hardware in the sidebar.

  • I have Windows 7 main library, iMac with additional library and Apple TV that I want to use home sharing, but windows library doesn't show as a computer on Apple TV.

I have music and movie library on an external drive connected to a Windows 7 machine. I also have home movies and other content on an iMac that I use.  I want to turn on home sharing for both and connect them to Apple TV for display, music and podcast.  They are all on the same wifi home network, but the Windows library doesn't show up on the ATV device.
I turned off all Windows firewall and I tried to configure port forwarding, but that didn't help.
I will say that this did work at some point, so a patch or an update, or some configuration change has caused it to stop workin at some point in the past six months to a year.

  • 24" imac with second display that flickers on and off randomly

Hi, I'm a n00b here, I've read a handful of threads before posting this a I cant seem to find a definitive answer.
I have a 24" 2.4Ghz aluminium iMac and I've recently purchased a HP zr24w 24" IPS panel as a second display, connected with an apple miniDVI - DVI connector.
The screen flickers off, to totaly black every time the mac seems to be having a hard time doing something, be it fast scrolling, flash video, but someimes randomly.
I have boot camp installed with winblows vista (for work) the screen does EXACTLY the same thing, all be it less frequently. This for me rules out the Mac OS, i think it must be something video card/driver related.
Was there ever a fix for this? most of the threads seem to just die with no official answer, it would appear that MBP users were ok until the last 10.6.3 update, when the problem seems to have returned, although i think thats a different issue with the same net effect.
I have spoken to apple care and the very helpful girl I spoke to send me some logging software which I've run and sent the logs back, that may help them out someway.
Any help would be GREAT !!
    many thanks
    Michael

well, some time has passed, here's where I'm at so far.
I tried a friend's samsung 24" screen and all was good with the world, no flickering on and off, no black outs nothing, for days it was all fine. I swapped the HP monitor back on and it went right back to its old ways. I called HP tech support, they decided that the monitor was faulty, i returned it to where I got it from and they have sent me a new one. Which was fine, for about 7 hours!!
So, to recap, the mini-DVI to DVI adapter is fine as it worked on the samsung screen, the HP screen is brand new and exhibiting the exact same issue as the first one (cant be 2 faulty ones surely) The samsung screen was fine.
This leads me to think that there is some compatibility issue between the 24" imac and this particular (hp zr24w) monitor.
I have followed apple support's requests for data logging but they cant find anything wrong there.
I'm out of ideas, any help would be GREATLY appreciated !!!
    thanks
    Michael

  • I am using an alternate monitor. Can I turn off the laptop monitor and still operate normally?

I am using an alternate monitor with my MacBook Pro. Is there a way to disable the laptop monitor so that the laptop can be closed?

Here is how it works, if you wnat to use it:
Apple Portables: How to use your computer in closed clamshell (display closed) mode with an external display
My son put his big monitor up on 4 inch blocks, then opened the MacBook on the desk below. Once he turned off Mirroring, he used the laptop display as an extension of the big display, and left the MacBook open.

  • External Monitor causes MBP to turn off

I got my MBP back in April. I also got a Dell 2005FPW external monitor that I hook up to my MBP when I am at my desk. My MacBook Pro gets really, really hot, just like others and apparently that is ok. I guess it is no longer a "laptop" because it is too hot for a lap. Anyway, aside from being uncomfortable, the heat usually does not cause problems. However, I have found that when I plug in my external monitor and have both screens going and have my processors maxed with some video applications my MBP will just turn off. Not sleep, or anything else, it will simply turn off. This is while it is plugged into the power so it is not a battery problem. How can I get my MBP to stop turning off, aside from not plugging it into my external monitor and running intense applications?
    Thanks,
    Jonathan

Do the random shutdowns happen when you don't have your MBP
    connected to the external display?
I have tried to duplicate the random shutdowns without the monitor attached, but to my touch, it feels as though the MBP does not get nearly as hot as it does with the external display attached.
Do the shutdowns happen with less intensive processor
    tasks?
No, it is usually when I have multiple programs open and both cpu's are near their peak.
Are you using the display cable that came with the Dell
display? Is the cable firmly seated in the display and the
    MBP?
Yes, I am using the cable that came with the Dell display. Yes, firmly seated.
Have you installed any third party software that uses
kernel extensions (like a temperature monitoring program)?
No, but I have downloaded TechToolDeluxe, I have just not run it yet. Should I?
Do you hear the fans come on at any time before it shuts
    down?
Not that I noticed but I was not really paying attention.
A little more background information. I originally found this problem because I would have my MBP at my desk at home, hooked up to the power supply, external keyboard/speakers/monitor. I would start a video processing application running on a long task and go to bed. I would come back and the MBP would be off. I would turn it back on and the task I had it working on would be only partially completed.
So I took it to work where I sit in an air conditioned office and have it on a glass-top desk. I tried to hammer it with tons of programs being open and video processing applications. The CPU's would run on max for hours and the MBP would get plenty hot but would not shut donw.
It is only recently that I realized that the shutdowns happened only when connected to the external monitor. So I thought that perhaps the video card for the external port was producing just enough extra heat to get the MBP to shut down. To test this I ran the same video processing application that I usually run over night, only this time I left the external monitor detached. No shut down.
Does the TechToolDeluxe program measure heat? That would help to quantify the heat levels.

I checked and found that the router did not have the latest firmware.   It does now.   The issue is still there.   I did a little research and found that the model number of my Apple TV (MC572LL/A) shows that it is a 2G version which uses the A4 chip.   The latest version uses the A5 chip and is 1080 capable.  Both are supposed to be capable of using type "N" routers.   I don't think that should be an issue but I wonder if later updates may have introduced some issues in the 2G version.
I am going to try changing the "N" channel also- just to see if that makes any difference.  The istumbler app does not show any "N" networks in my area so it is defaulting to 149.   I will note that even 1 foot away from the router I only get 75-85% for signal.   I would expect it to be 100% since it is so close.   I am also seeing noise go up from typically 13% to 21% when it is on channel 3 and that close.       I will play change locations and channels and see if there is any improvement.

  • My IMac  version 10.6.8 with Intel core duo beeps and turns off unexpectedly in both Mac and Windows mode. How do I fix this?

My IMac turns off unexpectedly in both Mac & Windows mode.  I've repaired disc and permissions using the Snow Leopard install disk and cleared the cache without help.  Any ideas how to prevent this?

The HAT test detected no problems.  Perhaps one of the peripherals, e.g., the backup disk, is causing the problem.  I'll try to run the MAC without peripherals for a few days and see what happens, unless you have other suggestions.
    Thanks
