[S] Latest Xorg crashes on dual head system when web browser is opened

Due to the long Subject line I abbreviated, the issue is solved but I would still like it if someone could answer my question if someone knows why
After updating Xorg and the Radeon drivers on my dual head system opening any kind of web browser causes Xorg to crash.  Any other application: Dolphin, Kopete, Amarok, urxvt open and run just fine with no issues from Xorg (which is baffling me).  I have a bunch of single head systems that use ATI video cards that don't have this issue, like the one I am currently on that has Chrome open with four tabs.
I caused a couple of these crashes and grabbed /var/log/Xorg.0.log, can be viewed from here http://sprunge.us/bNZC, as well as grabbed my /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-monitor.conf file, which is here http://sprunge.us/gbNW.  SLiMs log file has a little bit more in it as far as errors go, http://sprunge.us/UjVK, mostly how it is trying to load VDPAU which if I remember correctly that is a Nvidia thing is it not?  There are also errors how it can't load the RANDR extension.  Anyone have any helpful pointers of solving this?
Package details:
xorg-server: 1.12.0-1
xorg-xinit: 1.3.2
xorg-utils: 7.6-8
xorg-server-utils: 7.6-3
xf86-video-ati: 6.14.3-2
ati-dri: 8.0.1-2
udev: 181-2
kernel: 3.2.9-1

It seams that my 10-monitor.conf file was causing the issue, why I am not sure... and it would be nice to know what the problem with it was, but after moving that file out of /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d directory and restarting X11 and using xrandr to get my screens setup the way I like them to be X11 no longer crashes when a web browser is opened.  I wonder if this will also solve my issue of Awesome randomly crashing after long periods of inactivity...

  • HT202879 I have latest version of Numbers (3.1) but when I try to open a Numbers sp. sheet it says I need a newer version.

Numbers sp sheet is shared. Both user systems on same rev of Numbers.
I have latest version of Numbers (3.1) but when I try to open a Numbers sp. sheet it says I need a newer version. There is no newer version available.
The files get info box says to open it with Numbers 3.1 (default).  Other user has no problem opening the file.
    What to do next?

    Hi mwalk,
    Try this.
    Launchpad (second page) Disk Utility
Or if you can't find it there,
Apple Menu > About This Mac > More Info > Storage > Disc Utility
Select Macintosh HD and Repair Permissions.

  • I just installed Photoshop CC 2014, but Latest version of Bridge will not work when I want to open it from PS

Any idea why is Bridge latest version not working when trying to open it in Photoshop CC 2014 ? (French version) ? When trying, Creative Cloud app will open to ask if I want to download newest version, which I did numerous times now.
    Thank you

    Hi Eric,
Here's how a similar problem was resolved between PS and BR.
The issue was confirmed by ChunXiaYang at Adobe staff and solution put in the forum discussion on June 19 (no. 13). Here's a copy:
I have confirmed that this is a known issue before release. And the workaround is to uninstall and reinstall PS 2014. Then Bridge can be launched by selecting 'Browse in Bridge' in PS2014.
Please try the installation, and let me know whether it works. Thanks!
It woks just fine since I unistalled and reinstalled PS 2014.

I did this with a fresh install of the entire CC package. As soon as the CC packages updated, CC Bridge broke. Unistalled CC PS, reinstalled again, CC Bridge works, but CC PS updates itself again, and breaks CC Bridge.
You know... The whole move to CC has been a massive cluster... I've struggled with the CC packages for my entire subscription year, and now I'm 1.5 month away from needing to throw down another $720 for no reason what-so-ever, just so we can Beta test your really screwed up subscription services.

  • OpenOffice crash with dual-head presentation in Impress

Hi, I have an issue with Impress, I hoped that version 3.2 would fix it but it's not so. Now I think it is a problem of my system.
I have a dual head setup with an ATI card (Catalyst 10.5, xorg-server 1.7.6); I start a slide show with Impress on the secondary display, then when I press esc to return to Impress the program crashes. Starting it from the console I get this error messages:
    $ SAL_SYNCHRONIZE=1 soffice -impress
    ** (soffice:3129): WARNING **: Inhibit method failed
** (soffice:3129): WARNING **: Inhibit problem : The name org.gnome.ScreenSaver was not provided by any .service files
    ** (soffice:3129): WARNING **: UnInhibit method failed
** (soffice:3129): WARNING **: Inhibit problem : The name org.gnome.ScreenSaver was not provided by any .service files
    X-Error: RenderBadPicture (invalid Picture parameter)
    Major opcode: 155
    Minor opcode: 7
    Resource ID: 0x1800911
    Serial No: 40909 (40909)
I think the warnings are harmless, and that X-Error is the problem. I don't know if I should file a bug upstream, I searched OO bug tracker but I didn't find anything.
    Thank you.

Hey, I just discovered the same problem here... I believe it's exclusive with oo, and go-oo doesn't have it.
    EDIT:
According to this, it has to do with gtk, a possibly workaround (at least for me) is running this first:
    export OOO_FORCE_DESKTOP="soffice"
Then openoffice doesn't crash when you close the presentation :). Hope it helps until we find a real solution :).
PS.- The warning still appears though.

No. I using only one monitor now until the problem is solved.
I googled but could not find any solution.

Is there a fix for this?
It keeps happening and is a real pain. I have the latest bversion of itunes.

Experiencing a similar problem with Mac Pro Dual Quad for at least the last 4 or 5 months. iTunes crashes OS with all applications quickly becoming unresponsive and spinning ball displayed. No erratic behavior is seen before the spinning ball appears. Requires a manual power down and restart to clear. Frequently happens when I am managing my Podcasts, seemingly more frequent if the iPod is attached to the system. The computer is used for a wide range of photographic, audio, video and business applications without issues. Only when iTunes is running does the OS hang occur. Typically after restart, several of the last transactions performed in iTunes are not found and have to be done again. Problem occurred with later versions of Leopard and latest Snow Leopard OS. Curiously, no problem report window to report problem to Apple has ever appeared after experiencing the OS crash.

  • I updated to the latest numbers on my iMac but now when I try and open documents it tells me I need the latest version to open?

    Can anyone help?

Please look in the Applications for the most up-to-date version of Numbers. I suspect you got a free upgrade to OS X Mavericks and also updated your iWorks apps. If that is correct you have two versions of number on the computer, you cannot open a new file with the older version of Numbers, this is what I am guessing you are attempting.

Ive tried everything i could think of or what arch wiki could. I came to aurch linux to learn more about linux (fedora holds your hand to much.) but i dont think i can figure this one out on my own.

    serverman,
let me see if I understand your situation.
You are using the nvidia drivers and want to setup a dual screen with independent screens (?).
Without a xorg.conf one screen should work out of the box with one screen.
For the proprietary drivers you will need a minimal xorg.conf:
    Section "Device"
    Identifier "Configured Video Device"
    Driver "nvidia"
    EndSection
    Section "Screen"
    Identifier "Default Screen"
    Device "Configured Video Device"
    DefaultDepth 24
    EndSection
This still has only one screen, but can you try it and tell what happens ?

  • Frozen system when booting with dual-head setup (updates)

    Hi guys,
I made a fresh install a couple of weeks ago and I configured my system for a dual-head setup following the wiki. I activated KMS and added radeon to the kernel parameters.
    My xorg.conf looks like this:
    Section "Monitor"
    Identifier "DVI-0"
    Option "PreferredMode" "1920x1080"
    Option "Position" "0 0"
    EndSection
    Section "Monitor"
    Identifier "HDMI-0"
    Option "PreferredMode" "1920x1080"
    Option "Position" "1920 0"
    EndSection
I was having random freezes for a couple of days, but I didn't pay too much attention to it. I hard rebooted my computer when it froze and it could boot normally that second time.
But after yesterday, last update to the open source drivers xf86-video-ati (1:7.5.0-2) and lib32-mesa-libgl (10.5.2-1), my system doesn't boot unless I disconnect one of the screens. When only one screen it's connected everything is fine. If I plug the second screen, it pops up the KDE service to configurate the second screen but as soon I press 'apply the chages' my system freezes and I had to hard reboot.
I've tried all possible combinations usingt different outputs from the screens, getting the same results. Two of them connected --> freezes after grub loading. One connected --> boot Ok, but as soon as I plug the second one and I apply changes, freezes.
I found one configuration that doesn't freeze my system. When I plug the second screen, as I said, KDE service automatically pops up. Before I was changing the positions of the screen, one beside the other one, and my system freezes when I apply the changes. If I just left the default configuration (one screen in top of the other), it doesn't freeze my system. After that, I can rearrange the screens, as I need them, and it doesn't freeze.

Downgrading catalyst to 14.3 seems to have done the job. Thanks for the suggestion, marking as solved.

Sorry, I don't post often and wasn't aware of the rules on images. I'll keep that in mind next time.

  • System console dual head

I have a machine running dual head off of a nVidia geforce 7900gs, this if fine in X, but when i am in regular system console, it simply mirrors the same terminal on both monitors. Is it possible to run a different VT on each monitor? Is there any other way to make dual head from command line more useful?
    Any Ideas, anyone?

I have also been looking for info concerning this. In my small amount of research I found the fbset utility, it seems to support moving different ttys to different frame buffers. The problem is my /dev only contains one fb device (fb0). It seems my Nvidia 6600 (having two heads, a monitor connected to each) is being detected  as a single frame buffer. I have not had enough time to dig any further into this issue.
Let me know if you figure anything out,

  • [SOLVED]Xorg crash with some applications when using double screen

    Hi,
I have a TV that I often use to watch dvd from my computer, and to do that I've set it up as a second screen in my xorg.conf, but on a daily basis I use a xorg.conf file with only my main screen. Up until last week I was able to use my second screen without problem, but yesterday I tried and it crashed instantly.
So I ran a few tests, amsn and vlc seems to be 2 applications that makes X crash (though there might be other, but I seem to be able to use chromium firefox and ktorrent just fine).
My WM is not to blame, I've launched X without any WM and vlc still makes X crash.
The problem does not happen when using a single screen.
I thought that my xorg.conf might be the problem, so I used nvidia-settings to create a new one, but that didn't change anything.
Here are my xorg.conf used for dual screen, and the logfile from the Xorg crash:

Sorry this doesn't really help with the Xinerama problem, but since you are using the nvidia driver, have you considered using Twinview instead? You could do composite stuff too with Twinview - last I knew, Xinerama had problems with things that want to use compositing. I don't know how your setup is but if you're not set on using Xinerama, it might be an option to consider.
