S-Video or BNC

Hi all -
I have a rack set up with a router for:
-my FCP setup with DSR-40 deck
-SVHS deck
-my old school Avid setup
-my MPEG encoding computer
The "router" I have now is a dinky, 4x4 Ocean Matrix OMX-9057. This is an S-Video switcher.
I've come to a point where I need more than a 4x4 switcher. I'm having a hard time finding anything more than 4x4 in S video format.
So my question to you all is, what do you think about going to BNC? Or do you have anything else you recommend? And, probably the larger question here, when I'm editing in FCP, would I REALLY notice a difference using BNC or S-Video if I captured something through my rack into FCP (say VHS or something)
Thanks for your thoughts...
Carl

Svideo is more of a consumer connection. Although we all use it, most larger switchers will do much more than SVideo.
Svideo is nothing more than two BNCs - combined into one cute connection.
One set of the pins in an SVideo connector is the Chroma information - the other is the luminance.
You can buy breakout cables (usually called YC) to break the SVideo into both separate cables.
So, you could use a RGBHV switcher and just use two of the connections for SVideo. Or, you could use a RGB switcher and use two for svideo.
Composite is the combination of both of the separate signals in Svideo - combined into one connection.
Will you notice a difference - most people do on anything except VHS. You will notice that most VHS decks do not have an SVideo connection. Once we stepped into SuperVHS (SVHS) the technology allows the separation of the chroma and luminance - hence the Svideo connection.
We use the JVC SVHS deck - that has firewire i/o. This contains audio and video - without needing any additional analog to digital interface. You can also print back out to VHS/SVHS over firewire.
http://pro.jvc.com/prof/attributes/features.jsp?featureid=01&tree=&itempath=null&modelid=MDL101333
It's not the best editing deck - but it does work well with firewire device control.
The benefit of using an RGBHV or RGB switcher is that you might use if for switching other - higher quality sources.

  • S-video or BNC for external monitor connection?

Just picked up an NTSC monitor (not a great one, but better than nothing - Sony PVM-14L1)
And I'm wondering what the best way to hook it up would be. Here's a description:
"The monitor is equipped with 2 composite and Y/C inputs and an integrated speaker that enables users to monitor audio."
So, it's got S-Video inputs (y/c), and BNC inputs (for composite?). As of now, I'm going to have to go through my capture camera, which has the composite out.
Do I get a composite to S-Video, or composite to BNC adapter? I'm guessing S-video would be better...
    -brown

You'll gain nothing going from composite to S-Video. If your camera doesn't have an s-video out, just use the composite input.

  • Can any NI/Labview DAQ hardware be used to input video? BNC, S-Video, RCA, etc?

    Hello,
I am trying to manipulate digital video captured from security-type cameras and other devices.  I am just beginning on this adventure and would like to know if the National Instruments Suite has some possible solution.
    Thanks!
    M. Logan

Sure!  NI has a series of image acquisition products just for this.  Check out this link and I think the best one is the NI-1411.

  • Connecting a Video Monitor to a G5- how?

I need your some help to understand how to CONNECT the following components of my DV system:
    1) a Macintosh G5 (the video card has both ADC and DVI connectors) with Final Cut Studio software and a 23" Studio Display (DVI);
    2) a Sony Digital Video Cassette Recorder (GV-D1000E PAL);
    3) a Canopus Analog-to-Digital Converter (ADVC-110);
    4) a Trinitron video monitor (PVM-14N1E).
I have posted a web page which shows the various connectors on items #2, 3, and 4 (above):
    http://www.johnhlincoln.com/PVM/
The problem is really with the video monitor, which has both S-video and BNC connectors. Please look at the web page, and give me your advice about how to connect it to the G5.
I may need a particular video card and/or cable, to connect the video monitor.
    Thanks In Advance.

    simplest configuration:
use a 6pin to 4 pin firewire cable to connect the GV-D1000E DV port to one of your G5's firewire ports
use a S-Video cable to connect the GV-D1000E's PAL "S-Video Out" to the PVM's Line A "Y/C IN"
monitor the audio through the GV-D1000E's speakers and/or use a dual phono to single phono jack (2 jacks one end, 1 jack the other) and connect the GV-D1000E's L&R audio outs to the PVM's Line A "AUDIO IN"
you don't need the canopus converter, the GV-D1000E already does that through its A/V and S-Video inputs

  • Capture Edirol V-8 into FCP - help please!

    OK, here's my setup:
    2 - Panasonic DVX100B's
    1- MacPro (Quad)
    1- Edirol V-8 (http://www.edirol.net/products/en/V-8/index.html)
    FCP software
Here is my dilemma. I just bought the Edirol V-8 video mixer but have not gotten it yet. It does everything that I need it to do in a video mixer, but it does not have a Firewire output.
I do a 2-camera shoot (1 side, 1 overhead). I am trying to mix these signals on-the-fly thus avoiding a lot of FCP editing in post.
My question(s): What is the best way to capture the signal directly into FCP (using capture now) from the V-8? It has BNC and S-Video outputs but I've heard that these signals are of a low quality. I need this to be SD, DVD quality.
Do I need a card like a Aja Kona LS SD to capture the S-Video or BNC signal to FCP?
    (http://www.usedvideogear.com/catalog/aja-kona-ls-sd-10bit-digital-and-12bit-anal og-capture-and-outp-p-748.html)
Should I return the V-8 and get something else that is in the $2K price range?
Should I get a miniDV deck, hook up the cameras to the V-8, then the V-8 to the miniDV deck and then go firewire into FCP?
I am "learning as I go" here, so ANY help is greatly appreciated!

Before you buy...make sure FCP will recognize the unit as a DV device...DON't take a salespersons advice on this factor.
We have the Videonics (now Focusinfo) MXProDV 4 channel switcher...4 analog in/2 out - 2DV in / 1 out.
We have two issues...FCP won't recognize it as a FW device, so can't directly do 'Capture Now' with it.
Secondly, our cameras are anywhere from 25 to 100 ft from the unit. FW cable length is best when under 12 ft or so. There are some FW repeater/boosters available (search this forum or google), which might help, but we've not tried them. (Besides we're limited to 2 FW inputs and work w/4 cameras)
I have been partially successful getting the switcher to recognize DV cameras on 25' FW cables, but not consistently.
If you purchase the unit, make sure it's from a reputable dealer (who will take the unit back if necessary) and save your receipts...run some tests to make sure it's solid before committing to it.
Hope it works for you. If it does, post back and let us know.

  • Dual 2.5, Video Out to NTSC, JVC Monitor using BNC connection?

I have a JVC NTSC Monitor that has only BNC Video In. I am running FCP5 and want to priview my videos in this monitor. Is there a connection cable or adapter I can purchase to make this singnal handling work?
    I have a ATI Radeo 9600 card and a 23" Cinema Display.
Any help will be highly appreciated.
    Thank you,
    Roman

What video format are you working with? For SD DV/DVCam, the proper way to monitor the video output is to connect a Firewire capable DV device (camcorder, VTR or converter) to you Mac via Firewire. Then connect the DV device's analog output to your TV monitor. The connection set up is explained fairly well in the FCP user's manual.
Most consumer DV devices will have RCA jacks but you can purchase a BNC/RCA adapter or cable at just about any electronics store, including your local Radio Shack. NOTE: make sure the DV device you choose is compatible with FCP 5.
If you're working with other formats (BetaSP, DigiBeta, VariCam HD, etc), you may need a specialized capture card for your Mac. If you're working with HDV in FCP, I may be wrong, but I don't think there's an option available yet for viewing on an external TV monitor in RT.

  • Looking to connect an external video monitor with BNC cable

I have purchased a DVI to Video adapter..and it is not being recognized by the MacPro or by FCP...what should I do to rectify this?

    This one? http://store.apple.com/us/product/M9267G/A?fnode=MTY1NDA3Ng
From the info on that page: The Apple DVI to Video Adapter is designed to work with the DVI port on the Mac Pro (with ATI X1900 XT) MacBook Pro, Mac mini and Power Mac G5 systems only.
This: http://www.blackmagic-design.com/products/decklink/ would hve been a more appropriate choice if your monitor has a BNC connector.

    Merci beaucoup

  • Video feed from Bnc

I have a video camera that has a BNC video output and I was wondering if there was anyway that I could stream the video on labview and process the video data. Thanks!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Its possible that you could.  You should check this page Firewire Camera Support Page and the Industrial Camera Advisor.
Those page should help you find your answer.  I noticed there are links on those pages that address related subjects.  That's probably the best place to start.

  • Video not in sync on external monitor

    Hi-
I have Final Cut Pro 4, with the computer hooked to a DVCAM deck via firewire. The deck is hooked up to an external Sony NTSC monitor via BNC cables. When logging and capturing, I can see the video on the external monitor and it looks fine. However, when I playback video from the timeline, the video on the external monitor is out of sync- it looks like there are rainbow colored bars moving across the screen from left to right, and the picture is all swirly (not a great technical description I know). I checked the suggested settings in FCP and they seem ok, except that I could not find the option to View- Refresh A/V Devices in the menu list. If anyone has any ideas on what I should be looking for, don't know if it's the deck or the monotor or FCP, I'd appreciate any input. Thanks!!

Well... your sync issue is likely that you do not have powered external speakers and some sort of mixer attached to the dvcam deck.
    The other stuff? Dunno.

  • Help, HD Video Out From Timeline? How?

    Hi
What is the Solution for play out footage from the timeline in Final Cut Pro HD-Video out to a HD LCD Monitor? Canopus has no solution, and I was looking at the Aja hardware also. I need HDMI out I think ? Your thoughts on what works? Thanks, Tim C.
What Card is reasonable? or What converter needed? Blackmagic Card possibly?

most of the cards are HD SDI out on BNC connectors. blackmagic makes a box called HD link that allows an HD SDI signal to be mapped 1:1 pixel wise to either DVI-D or HDMI. Your monitor will need to be 1920 x 1080+ for it to work. It Appears you will need both the card and the adapter. I'm using a Kona2 and the hdlink for the client monitor and it works fine. I use a real HD mon for critical evaluation. the info re this adapter and recommended monitors is here http://www.blackmagic-design.com/products/hdlink/

  • Capturing video straight from a switcher to hard drive???

I am shooting a seminar this weekend and want to go "tapeless". I will be using a Datavideo SE500 switcher withthese outputs:
    Video Out:
Composite Video x2, 1 Vpp @ 75 ohms, on BNC connectors
    S-Video, on 4-Pin Connectors
Component Video, derived from Composite and Y/C using a breakout cable
I will have with me, my Macbook pro with Firewire 400/800 inputs, USB, etc.
I have been told that maybe the DVI for an external monitor can be used ad an "in"?
I did a little expirament I went from my Panasonic DVX100B to a Sony palmcorder via RCA to DV cord that came with palmcorder, then with palmcorder in VCR mode, I went from palmcorder to Mac Pro with Firewire and captured with iMovie.
Is there a way to capture this video right into my project in FCP, and how should i do it?
    Thanks
    Rob
p.s.- i have access to a DSR45 deck if it might have the connections i need.

    My signal path is this:
Analog out of switcher to JVC DV deck (recording to DV tape) - (I actually feed the signal through a chyron, then through a VDA and then into two matching DV decks so I can swap tapes without interruption).
FireWire out of (one) JVC deck to Mac (capturing in real time to HDD using 'Non-Controllable Device' setting
I have the 500GB external drive on FW800, while the video is coming in on the FW400. I do this on both my MacPro tower and MacBookPro (but you can NOT do this on the new MBPs, see below).
But even then, if I remember correctly, a single FW pipe can handle two-way DV streams (in from device AND out to HDD).
    (ASIDE TO AUDIENCE:
This is exactly why I'll not be buying a new MacBookPro, because they removed every single feature that made it a Professional machine:
    No full-size DVI out
    No FW400
Glare-only screen (although I see that the 17" does have a non-glare option)
Disk drive on side instead of front
If I wanted a non-pro computer I would have bought a MacBook! In my line of work (Film, Video, Audio, Theater production, and projection using Catalyst) I MUST have a full size DVI; I still use many FW400 devices and I still need 2 FW ports anyway; I simply will never use a glare (glossy) screen; and on my cramped and crowded workspaces, I don't have room for side-loading optical disk drives (the front is always clear because I need the room for my hands).
It is NOT professional to have to carry around a DVI adapter and several PCI Express cards to get my computer to do what I need it to do.)

  • Old digital video camera connection to iMac????

I have an old Panasonic digital color CCTV camera (model WV-CL320) which I have used for years with a microscope attachment in my classroom connected to a television. I would like to be able to connect to the computer to capture images, either single frame or short video clips, on my iMac G-4. Does anyone have knowledge or experience about connections of this type? I tried connecting via the video port by way of the Apple composite or S-video adapter to no avail. Nothing shows up and system profiler doesn't indicate anything. iMovie does not sense a camera. So what must I do or is this asking the impossible? Does this kind of capture require additional software, a composite video to fire wire or something altogether not apparent to my unsavvy mind? The camera has no storage capacity; it simply delivers an output of 1.0 Vp-p NTSC composite video signal. The output on the camera is a BNC connector which further connects to an RCA cable to the television. I have connected the camera to my LCD projector through a composite video- phone jack port on the back of the HP xb21. So if anyone can help it would be appreciated. Thanks

by way of the Apple composite or S-video adapter to no avail.
These ports are OUT from the Mac, not IN to the Mac.
The output on the camera is a BNC connector which further connects to an RCA cable to the television.
The camera is really no different than a VHS VCR (in this context).

  • Premiere Pro 1.5: Best analog to digital converter for BNC?

Recently I've been looking for an external analog to digital converter (that connects via firewire)that will work with Premiere Pro 1.5 for capturing uncompressed digital video from any source, whether it be BNC composite from a U-Matic to S-VHS via S-Video (either DIN or Y/C BNC) to Betacam SP BNC Component.  It would also be nice if it could import digital sources (i.e. DVCPRO 50/Digital Betacam) as well by SDI.
I've looked at a few by AJA or Blackmagic, but I'm not sure if they would work with Premiere Pro 1.5 on Windows XP SP3.
Does anyone know of a good converter?

I have NO IDEA if it will work with everything you list, but do some reading at http://www.grassvalley.com/products/converters

  • Live Video Streaming from Remote Location?

    Hey guys,
I have a semi-off topic question. I have a mac book pro and final cut studio. I need to stream a live video and audio feed from a live event in a few months. This feed has to get to another location in a format so they can stream it live over the internet. I will be receiving a composite video connection to stream. My job is to take the video and get it to the server room for streaming. Here are my three questions:
    1) What kind of connection should I request at the event location?
    2) How is the best way to get the video into my computer and then stream it?
    3) What format is the best and what's the best way to encode it on the fly? Hardware I guess?
Thanks in advance for any help you can give me!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    1. You've already stated they're supplying you with a composite video feed. That would either be BNC (likely) or RCA (not so likely). Since composite video signals are analog, you'll need a DV device (camcorder, VTR or converter) to convert the incoming analog signal to a digital signal.
    2. Here's one method: http://www.apple.com/quicktime/tutorials/delivery.html Also take a look at the Tricaster family of products.
