S-video to firewire

I have a Samsung camcorder HI-8 with a composit/s-video out. Is there an Apple device that can convert this to input into my firewire port?
I'm aware of some USB devices that do this but I'd like to use firewire.

Hello Q_Ball,
You cannot convert composit/s-video (an analog signal) to digital format on the fly through any cable that I know of.
The same thing applies to VHS tape conversion: analog signal that needs to be converted to a digital format before it can be used in the digital world, such as DVD recording.
So, check out this site for information:
http://www.datavideo.us/products/dac100_mainpage.htm
I use the DAC-100 for converting old VHS (and other sources) into digital format so they can be used in DVD productions.
If this is not what you want to do, let me know. And by all means, post back what you end up doing so all of us can share the wisdom.
Respectfully,

  • Can't output video to Firewire via Canopus..

    Hi all,
All of a sudden today, I am not able to output video via Firewire to my Canopus ADVC-110 with Final Cut Pro 6. I do however have video output when using programs like Logic, so the Canopus appears to be working fine. I checked the Audio/Video settings in FCP and have Firewire as Video playback, but no output is going to my monitor. What settings do I need to be looking at, in FCP. It's clearly something I did, and would like to correct it, so I can monitor video again. Please advise.
Also...one other note, I can't seem to playback video through Firewire in Soundtrack Pro as well. But Logic Pro plays vide through the firewire device just fine. Anyone have any insite on this? Thanx in advance....

Make sure the light is in the DV mode...press the big button a couple times to make sure. Also make sure you didn't switch to PAL mode from NTSC or something. AND...
If for some reason you can't view your timeline on your external monitor, there are a few things to try:
    1) Make sure that the camera/deck is connected and powered on BEFORE you open FCP.
    2) In the Final Cut Pro menu select AUDIO/VIDEO Preferences and make sure your signal is being sent out thru Firewire DV.
    3) Go to the menu and select VIEW>EXTERNAL>ALL FRAMES.
    4) Click in the % box above the image and select FIT TO WINDOW.
    5) Go to VIEW->refresh A/V devices
    6) Make sure the Log & Capture window is closed
If you want it to play in both the canvas and the external monitor you need to go to the FINAL CUT PRO menu and select AUDIO/VIDIO settings and make sure MIRROR ON DESKTOP is selected under the PLAYBACK OUTPUT section

    tyler57,
it would be better to direct that question to Gary Loftis, since my MacBook Pro doesn’t have a Thunderbolt port.

  • Video Cameras/Firewire

I got a Macbook last December that did not include the firewire port (at that time, I didn't bother to check since my old G4 had firewire...stupid mistake). Anyay, I have been trying to find a high quality camera to use to make 1) videos and 2) screen casts.
I like the Canon Vixia HV20 a lot because it shoots high quality video but also allows for screen casts. The only problem I just found out is that it only transfers videos via firewire. So I have two questions:
    1) Is there any workaround if you bought a Macbook without the firewire port (any adapters or the like)?
    2) What are other good camera models for doing what I want to do (high quality video with external mic + being able to plug directly into computer as a webcam to do screen casts)? I'm sorry, I do not know this kind of info - I am not a video person, but would like to make some useful screen casts for my business.
Thank you anyone for your kind help!!!

Thanks a lot for your reply! It's hard for me to find this information.
    Just a couple questions:
    1) Does the HG model have any problems with the mic port and putting a wide angle lens? (I thought I read somewhere that this was an issue)
    2) Does anyone else know if these models can be used as webcams. Basically I will have mostly video on my website, but I will occasionally do screen casts and do not want the quality of video to be lower (i.e., I don't want to use the isight) when I do a screen cast. Is there a list anywhere of camcorders that can be used as webcams (I checked the screen flow website and called them but they do not have a full list).

  • Output iTunes Video via Firewire

Anyone know if it's possible to output video via firewire from iTunes? I have some music videos in my library, and I'd like to route them through my DV deck to my television for viewing in another room.
Is there any way to accomplish this?

I'm aware only of this solution:
CTRL-Click on the file you want to put on firewire: "Show Song File"
A Finder Window will pop up.
Drag that video clip onto an application that can export via FW like iMovie HD

  • Audio monitoring follows video to Firewire Output

I'm a new FCS/Soundtrack Pro user but have been using ProTools LE and HD for some time.
When I select Video Out Firewire to view my video on an external monitor my audio monitoring follows and feeds the firewire device instead of my internal Mac outputs or my DIGI-002R.
I only want to view the vision on the monitor and keep my audio outputs playing through the DIGI002R. Is there any way of achieving this or am I missing something in the setup?

  • When will LT have "View ext. video through Firewire"?

Just installed the FCS upgrade and was dissapointed the I can't yet see using firewire to the monitor in LiveType. I do see that Soundtrack Pro has this now, which delights me but I would think that being text and all, that we would see this in LT as well. We need this!

(I'm answering in the off chance that you're asking the question seriously, David...)
Provided you have a video clip in your multitrack project, Soundtrack Pro will feed that video (via FireWire or PCI Capture Card) to an external monitor. (This needs to be setup in your Preferences first, of course). STP even uses the same shortcut as FCP to toggle External Video On/Off - Command-F12.
As for the question posted originally, LiveType does not have external monitoring because it works with Animation codec files - files which are way too beefy to play both on your computer monitor and send externally unless there is some type of GPU (or other hardware) acceleration, like there is with Motion. (and, of course, there is no hardware acceleration for LiveType currently)
Though I agree, it would be awesome to have external monitoring for LiveType.

  • Problems Capturing Video via FireWire

I have had problems capturing video via firewire on my MacBook Pro. It is an early 2008 model. I have tried capturing video using multiple programs, cables and cameras. In both Final Cut Express and iMovie ('08 and '09) I loose the connection mysteriously. It just stops sensing my camera mid capture. I can shut the computer down, programs down and cameras down but nothing seems to work consistently in getting it to work. The weird part is that it does work some times. Recently I tried an auto capture of a whole miniDV tape through a sony handicam via iMovie '09. It got 20mins of the tape then stopped and rewound the tape. When trying it again it read "connection error". I could not get it to work. I put the computer to sleep and came back later. It worked but only captured about 10 minutes then shut down the whole camera and import completely. I switched to manual import and it will now only let me capture about 20 seconds at a time. What is going on? To me it seems like the port itself is malfunctioning and disconnecting the signal randomly. Has anyone else experienced this? What is the cause and what can I do about it?

I've been reading the forums and it seems that there is an issue with the Firewire port in general. I have an external firewire 800 HD and when copying large files or a large number of files the HD gets dismounted unexpectedly. Your case seems similar in that we are both transferring large files via Firewire. Anyone have any fixes for this?

  • Simultaneous import of video via firewire and audio via in-line audio port

I have a converter that takes the S-video and audio input from my DVR then converts both to DV format, and then outputs via firewire. I hook the firewire up to my G5, open iMovieHD, and the application recognizes that as a camera and imports wonderfully.
Well, the audio comes through with a MAJOR buzz or hum. It's probably the converter, but the buzz/hum is not enjoyable.
So, I removed the audio from the converter, and the video converts wonderfully in iMovie without the audio. I have the audio coming in through my audio line-in.
I start to import my video, and iMovie starts recording the video. But I want to record the line-in audio at the same time. But when I switch to audio to turn on the input from the line-in, the video stops capturing.
When I start to capture audio first, then switch to capture video, then the audio stops capturing.
Is there any way that I can capture the video via firewire for one "track", and my line-in audio for the other "track", and have them play simultaneously in iMovie during capture??
Any help would be appreciated. thanks Adam

    hey there badkitty 42,
i don't think you can do that. it sounds like your issue is electrical. try turning the plug around on each piece of gear in the chain & listen for the buzz. if it's not heard you've found the cause of your ground loop. you can also pick up some of the 3-prong orange or grey electrical adapters from Lowe's or Home Depot to see if you can "lift the ground" to get rid of the buzz. i'd try one on the convertor 1st. one last thing, do you have any flourescent lights in use on the same circuit or in proximity to where you're doing your transcoding? these are notorious for inducing 60Hz hum in audio & video gear.
    good luck.

  • Apple Video Adapter / Firewire Out Thru Camera

    Hello,
Could someone explain in somewhat technical detail the difference between playing your timeline out to a TV, through the Video Adapter as compared to Firewire out thru a camera.
I didn't own a TV - I only watch films on my wall with a projector - but I got a basic TV the other day (I have zero budget) to help with finishing off my film projects.
It will help to see the DVDs I burn on a TV, as I couldn't do that before (without going to a friends house), but I'm forced to use the Video Adapter and I've read that it's of no use; that you need to go firewire out thru a camera.
I don't have an firewire in facility on my camera.
I basically wanted to hear more than what I've read so far. Specifically, what is the difference in technical terms?
Thru the adapter: is it interlaced on the TV, are the colors different, is it a pixel issue; what's the difference?
I edit on my iBook with Final Cut Pro, I've got a 19" Diamond Pro 930SB monitor also, and now this basic little TV. They all look different and I'm going crazy trying to figure out which to finish to.
Buying more kit, or adding something I don't have is not an option; only how to make the best use of what I've got.
Thanks for any answers or guidance.

Second what David said about using the output on the computer - it has little real-world use.
Matt, from looking at your impressive website I'm surprised you aren't more familiar with video technology, or at least have people around you who do. That's actually a complimant.
There are two essential things using a properly converted CRT will give you.
The first - coupled with a decent and calibrated video monitor (rather than a TV) - is a consistent standard by which you can judge your work, especially in comlor correction. FOr anything you consider critical work you should also be using scopes.
The second, assuming you are working in any interlaced format such as PAL or NTSC, is to give you the full temporal and spatial resolution of an interlaced signal. At the least it will allow you to see and correct interlace-related problems which are posted here so often. Your "basic tv" will at least help with this part.
The FCP manual explains both of these fairly well in more detail.
I reiterate that the Mac's video output has no relevance to either of these, no matter what the settings.
If you have shot your own material and brought it into the Mac, didn't you use a camera, a deck, or an analog converter to do that"? If so, you have your converter already.

  • Problem getting video from firewire camera

I've written a small app that gets video from camera and
publishes it through FMS(2). It works well with any USB webcams I
could find, but I have problems with firewire cameras. I can select
the camera in Flash settings, and getCamera() returns the
appropriate Camera object (e.g. it has the correct name, "Microsoft
DV Camera", which is what's its name in Windows), but I get
    no/blank video.
    Code snippet:
    var myCam:Camera = Camera.getCamera();
    Alert.show("Using " + myCam.name);
    videoDisplay.attachCamera(myCam);
The same code and the same camera seems to work on OS X. I've
tried out two different firewire cameras on two different Windows
(XP) machines, and they consistently didn't work. They do work in
Flash Media Encoder (I'm not sure if it was written in Flash
engine), or other programs that do capture in Windows; but my
problem is that I need to inject metadata (stream.send()) into the
stream so i can't just use FME :(
Any ideas why this doesn't work? Do firewire cameras have
issues with flash/flex (for the reference, I'm using Flex2/Flash9)
on Windows XP, or am I doing something wrong here?

    HI -
MPEG Streamclip does not act as a connection device between your camera and Final Cut.
It is a stand-alone application that converts the files from your camera into files that are useable in Final Cut.
The reason Final Cut does not "see" your camera directly is that the files are not usable in Final Cut - as recorded by the camera. Those same files are seen and imported in iMovie because iMovie is designed to support a wide variety of consumer formats, and converts them automatically on import to a format the iMovie can use. FCE does not have this feature for .mpg movie files. But the format the iMovie converts to is one that is not optimal for FCE.
Once you have converted the files that you want to use in MPEG Streamclip, you can store those converted files on your disk drive in a folder. Then open FCE an go to the menu File > Import > Files and navigate to where you have stored your converted files. Select them and the will be imported into FCE.
It is preferable to import using the MPEG Streamclip method, because the files that iMovie makes, are borderline usable in FCE, and if possible, should be avoided.
    Hope this helps.

  • How do I output Audio through computer speakers while outputting video via Firewire to TV

I'm outputting the video and audio streams via a FireWire connected Camcorder to a TV display (used as a third display), but I want the audio to output through the computer speakers and not through the Camcorder speakers as is happening.  If I disconnect the Camcorder, the audio outputs through the computer speakers normally.  This must be an audio out setting issue but I can't remember which settings to adjust.  I used to do this in an earlier version of PRE but I've forgotten the settings.  I'm using PRE 9.0.  If someone can understand what I'm trying to say, I hope that person can help me.  Thanks.

Good thought.  I was thinking the same way, and I tried  adjusting every
setting that's there but without any luck. It must be  a setting within PRE
that would allow the video output stream to be split from  the audio output
stream but I just can't find the setting.  As I mentioned  in the posting, I
used to do this in an earlier version of PRE.
