S-Video vs VGA on external display

Just wanted to get yall's opinon on running S-Video vs VGA on a ViewSonic 26" LCD HDTV. Im looking at picking one of these up. My guess is that VGA would be better, but wanted to get opinonson people whom have used external displays. I thought about going this way instead of a 20 inc LCD with DVI input. So any suggestions would be helpful.
Thanks
Steve

Are you certain it's really "VGA"? It's not a "composite" connection? The "yellow" connection that looks just like the red & white audio connections? A TV with a VGA connection would be a kind of odd thing. But any one that has s-video would probably also have composite connections. S-video would be better than composite, if you have a choice between the two, but VGA would be even better.
You will also need an to go from your MBP's headphone port to the audio-in on the TV. Unless you want to listen to the audio from your laptop.

  • Fullscreen 4:3 video on 16:9 external display off center...

    Hello.
I have a Powerbook 12" connected to an HDTV via mini-DVI-to-VGA. When I view 4:3 video on the 16:9 external display (HDTV), the 4:3 video is flush right with a big black bar to the left (rather than the video being centered with smaller black bars on left and right).
After quitting and restarting Quicktime about 7-10 times, it eventually centers, but then the next video I play, same things happens. Quite annoying and hoping there's a fix?
I have the latest Quicktime and OS X (10.5.6).
    Thanks,
    k.

Switched to a different cable, works fine.

  • My Macbook Pro (Mid-2012) won't connect to an external display using my MiniDP to VGA Cable.

I'm on a Macbook Pro (Mid-2012) on Mac OS X 10.8.3 (currently downloading the update to 8.4). When I plug in my Mini Displayport to VGA adapter to my Mac, the screen flickers blue for a second and the Display Settings window detects the other monitor and allows me to rearrange the screen, but it does not project anything onto the other monitor. However, I tried connecting an Apple Thunderbolt Monitor to this computer today, and it worked. This wasn't a problem before, as I was able to connect this Mac to other LCD projects before. Furthermore, I don't think it's an issue with the adapter either because it's relatively new. I also tried plugging in the adapter of another Mac (which was working fine) into my Mac, but it didn't work either.
    Here's what I've tried:
    1. Restarting the computer with everything plugged in
    2. Pressing Command + F1 when it's plugged
    Any advice would be helpful!

  • When i connect my mac book pro to an external display using a VGA cable and adaptor, the external display splits into several different columns of the same screen overlapping one another. Does anybody have any ideas as to why this happens?

I have used different VGA to mini port adaptors, different VGA cables and connected them to different external monitors and prjectors but the same thing happens. I am starting to think there may be a problem with the macbook itself however, when i have used a HDMI lead and adaptor to external monitors the external display is fine.

  • Video out to external display

Hello, Is there a way to get video out to an external display? I currently have a T5, but am getting a TX. Should be the same for each, though. Rregards, Karl
    Post relates to: Palm TX

Just a quick FYI...T5 and TX both have a "normal" 3.5mm audio jack.
Video will be a problem though.  It's a shame my cheap little Insignia media player can output Audio and Video via a simple cable.

  • MacBook Air can't connect to external display

2 months ago I bought a Thunderbolt to VGA adapter and its working normally, then after 2 weeks its stopped working. I plugged the adapter in and the VGA cable then the built-in display fades to black (nothing is happening on my external display at all) and it fades back to normal, so it knows that I'm connecting something. I've tried this with all my TVs in the house, no luck. And the screen always does that when I'm trying to connect it and disconnect it.
So today I bought an HDMI and a Thunderbolt to HDMI adapter, it doesn't work, it acts the same!
It fades to black when I connect the HDMI cable, then it fades back to normal! even when I disconnect the cable
I tried resetting SMC & NVRAM/PRAM, the mac is on, it isn't sleeping, i already tried pressing Detect displays in the Displays settings and it doesn't fix anything.

  • External display blinking on Macbook Pro Late 2008.

    Hello,
    Firstly, computer specs:
    Macbook Pro, 15-inch, Late 2008
    GPU: GeForce 9400M / 9600M GT
    8 GB RAM
    320 GB Hard Drive
    On Mavericks v10.9.3
I want to connect my computer to my TV via a mini displayport to HDMI adapter, for gaming purposes. As such, I want to use the 9600M GT as my GPU. However, when I am in High Performance mode (which uses that GPU), the TV screen blinks on and off every couple of seconds. I have tried resetting my PRAM, which failed. I know it is not the adapter, because it functions when used on another laptop. I know it isn't my port because it works when in Battery Saving (using 9400M GPU). Can anyone help?
    In short:
    Late 2008 15-inch Macbook Pro, GeForce 9400M / 9600M GT
Mini displayport to HDMI functions when on Battery Saving (GPU = GeForce 9400M)
However, external display blinks on and off when on High Performance (GPU = GeForce 9600M GT)

    Hi mjbecker2,
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities!
The article linked below has some tips that  may help you resolve the flickering issue that you are seeing on your TV.
Apple computers: Troubleshooting issues with video on internal or external displays
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1573
No video or no signal, image distortion, "snow," or flickering
    Check connections
When using an external display be sure to check the following:
If you're using an Apple notebook, confirm the AC power cable or adapter is securely connected to the computer and the cable providing power to the display is also secure. It is always good to have your notebook connected to AC power when an external display is in use.
Confirm display adapters are fully seated in their respective connections and that they are supported models and for the computer and display. Refer to these articles to assist you with adapter compatibility and further configuration information:
    Monitor and Display Adapter Table
About Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapters
Apple Mini DisplayPort adapters: Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
Thunderbolt ports and displays: Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
Remove all display cable extenders, KVM switches, or other like devices and retest to determine if the issue is resolved.
Try unplugging the video adapter or cable and then plug it back in.
If more than one video adapter is in use (or "daisy-chained"), troubleshoot by using only one adapter.
Example: A mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter connected to a DVI to HDMI adapter is an unsupported configuration because there is a series of adapters in use.
If available, try using a different display and or adapter (or use a different connector by using DVI instead of VGA, for instance).
    Cheers!

  • I have an apple macbook pro late 2013 15" retina display crashing on me when i am connected to an external display?

I got the following message after the crash, it happens a few times a day, my system is the base with 16gb ram late 2013 15" macbook pro retina.  it only happens when i am connected to an external display, I do have a converter from vga to displayport.  also, i run 4 different browsers in incognito mode as i do web testing and also have about 30 tabs open and excel and a few other apps open, not sure if this is what makes it happen or if it is the external display?  it is under warranty, so if you see anything below that may relate to the hardware i can bring it in and get it fixed.

    Hey SreeHarsha Vardhan,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
Sounds like you are having trouble with the screen on your Macbook. If you are not getting anything on the screen, take a look at this article.

  • TV as external display?

I'm a sound editor for picture, and I would like to be able to play back QuickTime movies on a TV screen.
I would like to set up a regular old tube TV with RCA or S-video input as an external display for my MacBook Pro. I would ALSO like to run an external Cinema Display at the same time. Is this possible?
I think a cable like this would work, but would my Mac recognize the 2 separate external displays?
    http://www.mountsandmore.com/Comprehensive-ADA-DVI-2-DVIRGBHV-CH1604.html

With that cable your only option would be to mirror, i.e. have the same display on the internal and both external displays, with the resolution on all 3 limited to the lowest one (the TV).
To output to two separate external displays and span the desktop across them all, you need additional hardware (such as the Matrox TripleHead2Go, and then you'd need an adapter to convert the DVI/VGA to RCA or s-video.
(A minor point, the linked cable text states "DVI female connector along with 3 female BNC connectors" but the image shows RCA connectors; I'd seek another vendor, just my 2¢).

  • I have iMac G5.  Need VGA adaptor for display port.

I have an old iMac Power Mac G5 8.2.  I need a VGA adapter for display port so we can use it in our TV studio in my elementary school.  What kind do I need to get?
    Mini-DVI and mini-display don't fit.

    2nd Display Support:
    Mirroring Only*
    2nd Max. Resolution:
    1024x768*
    Details:
Apple reports that this system has a "VGA output port for video mirroring on an external display or projector", and supports output resolutions of "640 x 480 pixels at 60Hz, 800 x 600 pixels at 75Hz and 1024 x 768 pixels at 75Hz". However, the hardware is capable of using an external display in dual or "extended desktop mode", Apple just blocked the capability in firmware to protect sales of more expensive Macs. Unsupported third-party hacks are available.

  • Solution for sleep issues with external display?

I had an Early 2011 Macbook Pro that worked quite well with an external display.  I now have a Mid 2012 Macbook Pro (bought 5 days ago, and running 10.10.3) that will not consistently work with the same external monitor.
I had it working yesterday for a few hours only if I left the MBP with the top open (both the MBP screen and external monitor stayed lit).  But, today it is back to freezing each time the monitor is connected to it.
    I have tried:
    1.  Connecting the external monitor to the MBP with the top open.  Results in the MBP screen now going dark and no signal being passed to the external monitor.  If the external monitor is disconnected, the MBP screens stays dark and the computer is unresponsive requiring a hard restart.
    2.  Connecting the external monitor to the MBP with the top closed.  Results in no signal being sent to the external monitor.  Disconnecting the external monitor and reopening the MBP yields, again, and unresponsive computer which requires a hard restart.
I have tried three different external monitors, all giving the same result.  The MBP is connect to external power, and I am running the latest OS (10.10.3).
Any suggestions before I return this to the Apple store in a rage?  :-)

    Hello there, Gaflin.
I'm sorry to hear you're having so much trouble getting your external display to work the way you are expecting with your new MacBook Pro. The following Knowledge Base article provides a great checklist of steps for troubleshooting the issue you seem to be describing:
Apple computers: Troubleshooting issues with video on internal or external displays - Apple Support
    Reset the system
You can reset the Mac's parameter RAM and SMC.Reset the resolution
Start by resetting the Mac's parameter RAM. If the display does not come up, was previously set to an unsupported resolution, and still results in no video:
    Start up in Safe Mode.
From the Apple () menu, choose System Preferences.
Choose Displays from the View menu to open the preferences pane.
Select any resolution and refresh rate that your display supports.
    Restart your computer.
Using Closed lid, Extended Desktop, or Mirroring display modes
When using multiple displays, information can be presented in a number of ways. For more information and what modes are supported by your Apple product refer to:
Apple Portables: How to use your computer in closed lid (display closed) mode with an external display

  • External display resolution

I have Dell up2414q monitor which is capable of displaying up to 3840 x 2160. But when I connect my 11-inch Macbook Air (the latest 2014 model), which is capable of 2560 x 1600, shows only 1920 x 1080. This is the highest resolution listed in display setting.
I'm using Display Port cable and enabled Display Port 1.2 setting on the monitor. I went to Apple Store and asked, but they had no idea what was wrong. My OS is 10.9.3.

    Hi there gen2014,
You may find the information in the article below helpful.

  • Loss 3D graphics and can't connect to external display with NVIDIA card

I note this morning that the graphics in 3D mode of iWork (version 4.1 with system 10.6.8) no longer appears in all software suite. The 2D graphics are displayed perfectly. I also notice I can't connect an external display when I am on NVIDIA card but work well with Intel card.
The 3D graphics are printed but not displayed on the screen (it also appear inthe thumbnail). It seems to be a worry to display.
I posted two screen images showing the problem of 3D in Pages.
