  • HELP: S10-3 Audio Problem - Dolby Headphone

I have recently purchased a Lenovo S10-3 laptop.
One of the features that I noticed is virtual headphone surround sound by Dolby.
The problem that I have is that when I enable it, the volume becomes unbalanced. The left headphone speaker plays twice as loud as the right one. The sound quality is much better with it on and I really want to use it, but I cannot because of this problem. I tried individually adjusting speaker volume, but there is a significant loss of audio quality and surround effect if i do so, not to mention that the sound then becomes unbalanced again if I use the volume control.
I am using Windows 7 and the Win7 Drivers supplied with the laptop.
TL;DR: Left Speaker Louder than Right with Dolby Headphone Surround enabled.

This happens with any and all headphones.
My Realtek Control Panel looks different from that picture.
My one looks like this. (for both versions of the windows 7 driver)
The driver from the website is version 6.0.1.5989
The driver supplied with the laptop is version 6.0.1.6113
I am not sure whether this feature exists in earlier drivers and whether the problem exists in Windows XP.
My ancient PC sound card only works properly in XP, but I would not expect a new PC to have problems with windows 7 drivers.
Below is the closest matching image that I could find online. While mine looks slightly different, this is the feature that I am having problems with.
    Link to picture
The feature works similarly to Creative's CMSS 3D, but in addition to expanding the sound, the centre channel (L+R : Vocals and bass) seem to be panned to the left, and that is the problem.
The driver from the website does not have this feature. It seems it was included in the newer version, but not coded properly.

  • Dolby headphones icon , Belle FP1 - WHEN IS IT ON/...

After updating to Feature pack 1 , there is an option to turn dolby digital plus . It comes in the form of an icon when listening to something with headphone connected.
The icon is bright and when clicked it turns darker, but I dont seem to understand which of those 2 situations means off and which means on.
Is it on when the icon is bright (meaning, the bright color means "it's curreny on")
    OR
Is it on when the icon is dark (meaning, the bright color means "if you click it, it will be on")
it's very unclear to me and for no good reason. Symbian is a good OS, unlike other phones, in Nokia Belle, holding on an icon brings up the icon description - what it's supposed to do and solve these kind of misunderstandings. But in this case, holding the Dolby Headphones icon just brings up the words "Dolby Headphone", in both cases: Holding the icon when it's bright, and also after clicking icon, meaning, when holding icon when it's dark.
Do you understand my intention? There is a dilemma here, on a broader scale it's because it's unclead if the shape of a button (for example, being bright) means it's what the status is currently now, or if the shape of a button is the action, meaning what the status WILL BE after clicking.
For example, the PAUSE button is an icon that shows what WILL BE after clicking . So I want to assume that it's the same with dolby, bright color means "click me and i will turn on." But it could also mean " I am on, click me to turn off ".
Hope Nokia would be smart to update that icon's description to be "Turn Dolby Headphone on" and "Turn Dolby Headphone off". This would clear confusion.
    Thanks for you help .

ok thank you very much, if a mod sees this and approves this answer - please lock it. (So if  you're a curious reader from google and this thread is locked, the answer is above my post )

  • Creative Labs HQ-2300D Dolby headphones connections

Hi I would be extremely grateful if you can hep me with the following question. I am currently setting up my ASUS laptop for a home cinema setup and in the interest of good neighbourly relations I am hoping to use your Creative Labs HQ-2300D Dolby headphones. However my laptop has an inbuilt soundcard with the standard headphone connection (no optical connector). Will I need external soundcard with an optical connection to hear Dolby digital sound on DVD Movies through your headphones? If I do can you recommend an external soundcard with the appropriate connectors, I was hoping to purchase the Creative Audigy 2 ZS Notebook PCMCIA Sound Card but does this have the right connectors for the HQ-2300D headphones to get dolby digital?
    Many Thanks

    Can anyone help?
Would an optical cable be the correct way to get a signal from the gamer card?

  • Any hardware with app to watch DVDs using Dolby Headphone?

I love (and sometimes by no other choice) to watch DVDs on my laptop (in this case my new MacBook Pro). I've good set of Bose headphones but I really miss the 'surround sound experience. Googling, I found a small hardware device - http://www.audiotrak.net/optoplay.htm - from Audiotrak that plugs into a USB port and seems to offer Dolby Headphone technology... however, although the specs say that it will work on a Mac it looks as if the only included app for playback is a Windows app called "WinDVD Player" and the product seems somewhat dated: it's USB 1.1 and it says that it works with "Mac OS 10.1 or later".
Does anyone know anything of this product - or other similar products - that are small and portable, have licensed Dolby Headphone technology, and would work on a MBP?
Watching a movie on a small screen (in 'normal' size - full screen, to me, looks pretty bad. But the worst thing is the sound I'd just like for it be be more realistic... it's fine for "South Park: Season Seven" but rather blows when watching a flick in which the sound is supposed to be part of the experience...

Yes, I do wish someone who knew about how DVD Player and Macs with digital output function would jump in here and clarify things! If you go to DVD Player Help there's one section - "Selecting the audio output for a DVD movie" that tells you how to set up DVD Player Preferences with the optical out jack... my GUESS is that the actual decoding is accomplished via the home theater system, although the jack could be connected to the "Logitech Z-5500 5.1 THX Speaker System" and accomplish he same ). And there are likely dozens - if not hundeds - of digital speaker systems out there that do the same.
Oh - and just as an interesting side note, I found an old reference disk and DVD Player played Dolby Digital (through analog headphones and MacBook Pro speakers) just fine... and also played DTS although the warning sign that came up on screen said "In order to playback the DTS Digital Surround Sountrack, you will need a DTS ready DVD player with DTS digital output connected to a DTS decoder." OK, fine, I have that in my living room... and although neither Dolby or DTS sounded anything like the Dolby Headphone surround sound that I get when I jack in to my Denon AVR-4806 receiver, the sound differences left and right channels was obvious and there was a 'center channel' effect. Odd. I'm going to have to find one of my newer disks and see how newer audio formats are handled.
I really DO wish an Apple Sound engineer would jump in here! Maybe one of the folks responsible for DVD Player (yes, we take it for granted... but thanks for the new audio and video controls in Tiger! Sure would be nice to have Dolby Headphone available - particularly on laptops - on we who are always on the road!)

  • HQ-2300D Dolby Headphone Deco

    Hi there,
I'm really excited about the Creative HQ-2300D Dolby Headphone decoder, as I have been searching for a PORTABLE hardware decoder for a long time and without much luck. I'm not sure how the two compare technically, but well done to creative for designing a product that at least looks far more refined than Thrustmaster's recently released alternati've.
Anyway, as stated above, it seems that technical details about the decoder itself have not been made readily available. Of course, it decodes dolby digital and DTS and produces a Dolby Headphone output, which is all excellent, but what is the quality of the output like? This is half addressed to those who have used the system (what are your subjecti've impressions?) and half addressed to Creative. In particular, the marketing materials state that the decoder incorporates a 'high-quality headphone amplifier'. Could someone please give me the technical specs of this amplifier. In particular:
    - What is the power rating?
    - What is the quoted distortion?
    - What is the S/N Ratio of the output?
    - What is the output impedence?
The final point would be of particular interest - would the decoder be capable of driving a pair of Senheiser HD580's with their impedence rating of 300R, for example? I understand that for the price at which these things are being sold at, I shouldn't expect magic, but what is the quality of the inbuilt A-D convertors like? Can they be directly compared to those in any of the Audigy cards?
Thanks in advance for your help,
    Regards,
    Ken.

    Can anyone help?
Would an optical cable be the correct way to get a signal from the gamer card?

  • Problems with HQ-2300D headphones. Lack of surround sound and other minor probs.

I've bought Creative HQ-2300D, and I am disappointed so far.
My first problem was instructions. I am not trying to insult anyone, but the booklet didn't instruct anything. It merely explained what the buttons did and what did the pictures mean (as if I can't recognize a notebook when I see one). The diagram did not include PCs, either.
Regardless, it wasn't useless as finally I've made the headphones & the decoder work. I was surprised that the cable connecting my machine and the decoder was short and thin. Very thin. Here's what I had in my bundle, aside from the decoder, headphones, and cheap Energizer AA batteries:
    http://img293.imageshack.us/my.php?image=img0020qh6.jpg
"A" is used for connecting the headphones to video game consoles, I gathered, so I put it aside, since I needed to connect the headphones and decoder to my PC. I tried using "B", but couldn't fit the black thing anywhere. "C" worked. Did I get it right?
I tried music first. Horrid. Bass sounded blurred out and what closely followed could only be described as hands clapping with bass at zero. After messing around with settings, I've managed to reduce that effect to a minimum. Then I've tried watching a movie, and the sound quality was actually very good. Although I've been watching a DVD, I didn't notice surround sound.
Then I've tried games. Half-Life 2 and then Doom 3 with EAX patch. The sound quality is admirable, but I didn't notice surround sound. Is there anything I need to tweak? Also, there's faint noise after low sounds.
Are the headphones defected, or what?
EDIT: Forgot to mention my soundcard is X-Fi Platinum.
Message Edited by Flawless on 07-07-2007 08:31 AM

I'm really sorry for the double post, but after thoroughly reading the instructions again, I've managed to eliminate that faint static by pressing Dolby Pro Logic II and Dolby Headphones buttons simultaneously and holding them for 2 seconds.
But the surround sound is still absent. I thoroughly tested with the helicopter sound circling you, with both CMSS-3D on and off, I fired up Half-Life 2 and Doom 3 and tested if there's any difference between front and back, with both CMSS-3D on and off. I closed my eyes, and I couldn't tell where the sound was coming from.

  • Does the digital optical input recognise Dolby Digital?

    Hey guys,
I was wondering if you could help clarify something for me. I have an Astro Gaming A30 Audio System that I use when playing my PS3. It's a gaming headset with pinpoint-accurate 7.1 Dolby and Dolby Headphone surround sound. Here's a link to the web page if you want to know more about it - http://www.astrogaming.com/products/detail/80/A30-Audio-System/.
Now, at the moment I have the PS3 connected directly to the A30 Audio System with a digital optical cable. In the PS3 settings, I have it set to output Dolby Digital 5.1 as this is the format that the A30 Audio System uses. This setting is important because it's what gives me the surround sound in my headphones. Ok, we're almost at my question...
Recently, I've been thinking of buying a capture card so I can record my game plays and upload them to YouTube. The capture card that I'm thinking of getting is the Blackmagic Design Intensity Pro. Here's a link to the web page - http://www.blackmagic-design.com/products/intensity/.
My question is - since there is no output on the A30 Audio System, and therefore no way to route the sound into my Mac from it, I need to first send the sound from the PS3 into the Mac (for recording) and then re-send the sound from the Mac into the Astro A30s (for listening). If I do this, will I lose the Dolby Digital format that was originally output from the PS3? I don't mind recording the audio in stereo, but it's essential that the Dolby Digital sound goes to the Astro A30s. Otherwise I won't have proper surround sound. And if you went to the website, you would have noticed that they're pretty expensive. So playing in surround sound is very important to me, as I paid top dollar for them.
Anyway, if you can clarify that for me it would be much appreciated. Thanks for your time.
    Regards,
    Daniel

Sure there's a difference it depends completely on the original sample rate of the audio recorded otherwise the best built in audio can do is 48/24, so trying to go out at 96 will force resampling[without a capable app running]. But in terms of resampling, if you use the card then you should be able to use 96/32.
Have you properly adjusted AMS settings; so that the card is in Properties at 96? Still the only governing factor there is whatever software governs the PCI card. I don't get the problem you're having here, what is the connection to the machine, optical?

  • Optimal headphone settings for Xfi XtremeMu

I've just bought myself some nice new Sennheiser HD595 headphones and I'd like to do most of my music listening through my computer (CDs and DVD-As played through the dri've in the computer), but I'd like some advice on how to set my Xfi XtremeMusic card to the right settings.
I've fiddled around and found that the Crystaliser does make the sound sharper, but I'm worried that it might be obscuring other sounds or distorting the noise somehow to achieve this effect (I'm fairly fanatical about getting the best possible sound out of my music - "the way the musician intended it to be heard" or something like that).
I've also swapped between the 2. speaker setting and the headphone setting and can't really decide which one sounds better - although at higher volume the 2. speaker setting has a constant fuzz in the background. However, some of the other posts on this board suggest that 5. is the best setting for headphones.
I also tried the CMSS-3D headphone setting and it definitely sounds worse, like the sound is wrongly positioned around my head.
Basically, I'm just a little overwhelmed by the sheer number of permutations and combinations in the sound settings, and would like some advise on how to tweak it to the best music-listening effect.

In the config. consoles I think it's better to leave it as headphones or 2. speakers. Since you have to plug the headphones to the line-out jack if you configure as 5. you'll lose the center, sub and rears when listening to surround content. When you use a 5./7. setup, CMSS "fills" the missing channels with the stereo source. With headphones it makes stereo music more?"upfront" so it doesn't sound "inside the head", but according to some reviews, the HD595s have already?an upfront soundstage. CMSS 3D is nice when you listen to 5. DD/DTS content with headphones, the spatialization is pretty good and I prefer it over the basic stereo?downmix (or even dolby headphone), but you might want to turn it off for stereo content (mostly music) as it changes sligthly the sound (you already noticed that).
CMSS 3D is almost a must for games, it enables MacroFX and elevation filter (in UT2003 let a manta run over you, you'll immediately notice the difference), just enable also bass boost for games, it tends to favor mids and highs.

  • Multi-channel audio? How ? (Dolby Digital, PCM etc.)

    So,
Take 2 now support 5.1 channels audio out, at least for some HD rentals.
I am wondering if anyone has gotten that to work.
I have Apple TV connected via HDMI to my receiver (which can decode both the bitstream as well as linear PCM for multi-channel tracks).
However, I don't seem to get any multichannel, and the Dolby Digital toggle in Apple tunes makes no difference.
Has anyone gotten 5.1 to work, and if so, which which movie/tv show/trailer?
    Thanks,
    Dan

    1. Not a great fan of detaching audio except in multicam clips. Generally I'd suggest using the expand audio components function to access the channels.
    2. Yes. Switch off the auto tracks in the browser and only turn them back on for the clips you need in the project. With expanded audio components, if you turn the channels back on they will reappear in the timeline.
    3. You use roles for this. I know time is tight for news, but taking a few moments to assign roles to the clips in the borwser, which you can do in globally, will allow you to export with separate tracks.

  • HQ 2300D Headphones

I have some questions about these headphones and i hope the knowledgable people here will be able to help.
How long do the batteries last.
Is it possible to use rechargeable batteries instead of alkaline.
Is there an input for mains adapter.
Can these headphones be connected to audigy soundcard.
    Many thanks for any info.

  • HQ-2300D headphones - stuttering sound when used with laptop

    Hi!
I didn't find any headphone forum, but the speaker forum seems close enough...
I've had the HQ-2300D Dolby Headphone headphones for a few months. They work (very!) well with my separate DVD player (a Pioneer model). Now I've bought a Dell XPS M70 laptop, and I've started having problems.
In short: when playing DVDs, the adapter (or converter) switches frequently between Dolby Digital and Stereo mode, creating a very disturbing chopped-up sound. Inbetween it works, but especially quiet scenes are *very* choppy.
Now, I've tried the same scenes with the *exact* same setup - same DVD player software, same settings, but instead connected to my home cinema system (Marantz surround receiver). That sound flawless and does not show the same behaviour.
Again, please note that the headphones work fine when connected to the digital out of my "hardware" DVD player.
So, what can I do? Is there an issue with the decoder? Too sensitive? Is the signal too weak? Please help! This is one of the reasons I wanted these headphones to begin with!
For the record: WinXP, all drivers and BIOS updated, Sigmatel STAC9200 HD Audio, tried both PowerDVD and VLC with the same effect.

  • SPDIF Dolby Setting

I have a speaker, which is just stereo, but I also have a headset which is Dolby 5.1 capable.
I have connected stereo through the 3.5mm and headset through optical with Dolby enabled.
What I want to know is do I have to set the speaker setting to 5.1 to get my headset to work properly at Dolby setting, or is the speaker setting separate from Dolby setting.
Hope the question is not too confusing.
    Thanks for taking interest.

    Ah ok,
So too bad the website doesn't show any information how the inputs should be set up.

And basicaly it's just using some variant of Dolby Pro Logic® II . But the Speakers itself are Stereo only so it's sime kind of virtual surround. Therefore it can be set to 2.0/2.1 or Headphone as the Mixamp should do the upmix. You might want to try combinations with X-Fi CMSS-3D Headphone activated - so what sounds better. And if the Mixamp can even work correct when DDL/DTS is activated.
Concerning your other question: Settings are saved on speaker configuration (i believe also for DDL/DTS) so if you change from Headphone to 2/2.1 and had other settings they are changed too.
Btw. to me that card and headphone is IMHO kinda wasted money, i would simply have bought an ASUS Xonar D(X2)/HDAV (Deluxe) (That all have better hardware components, better drivers and allow all kind of Dolby codecs also hardware support them) and good (remote) Headphones with controll.

  • X-Fi CMSS-3D, Headphone surround, F.E.A.R. and Quak

    Hi there.
I'm trying to use the 'right' audio settings to play F.E.A.R. and Quake 4 using my new X-Fi Xtreme Music.
I'm a bit confused about when / when not to use CMSS-3D. Does it upmix a stereo mix to 'virtual' surround? Or does it enable OpenAL / DirectSound to produce further positional realism?
Should I turn it on when I'm playing with two speakers?
Should I turn it on when I'm playing with four speakers? (depends on how late/loud I can be!)
Most importantly, should I turn it on when I'm playing with headphones?
Or does it depend on the game itself?
    I'm a bit confused!

The easy question first... The surround/stereo settings are only relevant for Doom3/Quake4 when using the original non-OpenAL sound engine. In this mode, it outputs DIRECTLY to 2 channels or 5 channels on the stereo and surround settings respecti'vely. As far as the soundcard is concerned, it looks like you are playing a 2 channel or 5 channel sound file - ie. there is no 3D audio API involved. Now depending on your speaker and CMSS3D settings, you COULD get your X-Fi to "process" this output. For example, if you have 4 or more speakers selected, and you enable CMSS3D-Surround, AND you set Doom3 output to stereo (non-OpenAL mode), the X-Fi will use its upmixing algorithms to deri've 4/5/6/7 channels. Similarly, if you have 4 speakers, 2 speakers, or headphones selected, and you enable CMSS3D-Virtual, AND you set Doom3 output to surround (non-OpenAL mode), the X-Fi will use its HRTF virtualization algorithms to create 5 virtual speakers.
Regarding what exactly CMSS3D is, the best explanation is in the Soundblaster Audio Technologies Glossary (under Audio Playback Technologies) in the Creative Knowledgebase. Unfortunately, they use the same acronym (CMSS) to apply to both upmixing, HRTF based virtualization of multi-channel speakers, AND HRTF based spatialzation of 3D audio (arbitrary 3D coordinates are provided with the sound). The knowledgebase article describes CMSS as it is known in the Li've! and Audigy series. One inaccuracy with the table shown in the article - the one that describes what CMSS does based on the number of source channels and the number of speaker channels - is that 4 speakers mode also uses HRTF to spatialize 3D audio (while 5 or more channels does not).
With the release of the X-Fi, the terminolgy is cleared up a bit. You'll notice that depending on the speakers you have selected, you'll see either CMSS3D-Surround, CMSS3D-Virtual, or CMSS3D-Headphone. CMSS3D-Surround is the upmixing stuff, CMSS3D-Headphone is HRTF virtualization/spatialization, and CMSS3D-Virtual is virtualization/spatialization WITH cross-talk cancellation use for 2 or 4 speaker setu
    ps.
Notice that you get both CMSS3D-Virtual AND CMSS3D-Surround in 4 speaker mode, dependin on what the source material is (stereo or multi-channel). The room acoustics is good for movies and the effect is very similar to Dolby Headphone. In fact, I think the virtual acoustics sounds pretty decent for non-OpenAL/DirectSound3D games that output directly to multiple channels rather than going through 3D audio.
