S10 ideapad - fails to accept 4-port usb hub

I got an external usb keyboard, and a 4-port iogear usb hub
to connect both a mouse & the keyboard.
The keyboard lights go on, briefly, during boot = = but at the login screen,
neither mouse nor keykboard will work.
Any ideas - ?

I have the same issue with my Thinkpad. It all depends on what all is plugged into the USB. If they are all used then you don't have enough power to power the hub completely. Only a powered hub will work.
Does one work if only one of them is plugged into the hub?

  • My new Logitech 4 port USB hub worked for 5 minutes.

After I had the message that a USB was drawing too much power and the hub from the hard drive would be de activated I bought a Logitech 4 port USB hub.
This worked for 5 minutes and now I get either the same message or nothing at all
Could someone please tell me what to do?

Click on the Link supplied above and follow the Steps...
Before doing that...  and this is not a patronising question... but I have to ask... you have checked that the Wall Outlet you are using for the Hub is working...
Also, when you did the Restart did you Disconnect the Hub...

  • Time Machine and 4 Port USB Hub

I am trying to use a 1Tb external drive with Time Machine. I have connected the external drive via a 4 port, externally powered USB hub. The hub is then connected to my Airport Extreme.
The problem is the drive will not mount using the hub. Yet, when I plug the drive directly into my MacBook Pro, it shows up just fine in Disk Utilities, and Time Machine wants to know if I would like to use it as a backup disk.
I'd really like to use this drive wirelessly to back up multiple Macs via my Airport Extreme. The odd thing is that I have a printer connected to the same hub and I share it using the Airport Extreme and it works just fine. I just don't understand why the hub is making a difference.
    - Do I need a different hub?
    - Are hubs a problem with this kind of set up?
And I'd like to sneak in a follow-up question if I may:
    - Can I use the same hard drive with Time Machine to back up 2 or 3 Macs?
    Thanks in advance!

My thanks to you and Tesserax for the quick and helpful responses! You were right about the 1Tb drive not being supported wirelessly through my Airport Extreme. The drive showed up under "disk" in Time Machines preferences, but the drive would not mount. The minute I put the printer directly into the Extreme and connected the drive to the MacBook Pro via the hub, it showed up in Disk Utilities and was ready to format. And, now Time Machine is asking me if I want to use it as my Backup Disk. Cool! Now the only question is if I can share the disk so that my other Macs can also take advantage of this new Backup Disk. We'll see..
    Thanks again so much!!

  • I have a HDD attached to my AirPort Express through a 7-port USB

I have a HDD attached to my AirPort Express through a 7-port USB hub. How come it doesn't show in my iMac?

The USB port on the Express only supports a USB printer. You will need to connect the hub to your iMac.

  • Multiple Printers on USB Hub with Airport Express

I have been testing all day and I think my question is already answered. However, I would like to confirm with the gurus in here: Can AE be hooked up to a powered 4 port USB hub to which three printers are connected?
In the hardwired situation, there seems to be no problem. All three individual printers are recognized by Printer Setup Utility on the computer to which the USB hub is attached. When I attach the USB hub to the AE and restart the hub, only the first (closest to the USB out cable) is recognized, no matter which one I place in that first socket. And only that first one is seen over the wireless network.
I was looking for a way to allow other computers in the house to be able to utilize these three different speciality printers (labelmaker, DVD printer and LaserWriter), without having to have the connected computer always on as host.
Any suggestions would be appreciated-short of buying two more Airport Express units.

Sorry, but no. The USB port on the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) can only accept a single USB printer. (ref: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107857)

  • USB hub printers

Is there a problem with printing with Bonjour when you have a couple printers hooked up via USB hub? I have 2 printers attached to Airport Extreme Base Station via USB hub and they don't work very well (if at all) until I unplug from Station and then replug in DIRECTLY to computer.

  • IPOD SHUFFLE PLUGGED INTO USB HUB BUT NOT BEING READ

I recently got a 4 port USB hub because I needed extra usb ports. I mainly use the hub to connect my flash drive, external hard drive and my IPOD shuffle, but the only thing that isn't getting read by the computer is the shuffle. Everything else that is conncected to the hub is being read by windows. The shuffle just sits there, when plugged into the hub, blinking a green light (which doesn't look normal). The hub itself is a 2.0 hub. HELP!

I had the same problem. FIRST, I had to remove the software that came with the original ipod shuffle. 2005/06/26, and replace it with the older version 2005/01/11 that I found on this site: http://www.opendrivers.com/driver/220012/apple-ipod-ipod-mini-ipod-photo-ipod-sh uffle-software-updater-2005-01-11-windows-2000-xp-free-download.html
Once in a while it still doesn't recognize the ipod, but I think that's a usb port problem. Unplug it and plug it in again and it should be fine. Just make sure you remove the original software first in the add/remove programs section!
Also, if Mac is so good (according to some people on this site), why did Mac start using the Windows XP software and not vice-versa!!! haha
    Good Luck!!!

  • Power USB Hub shutting down iMac while in sleep

    Hello,
First time using the forums here and I do apologized if this has been discussed before. I recently purchased a power 7 port USB hub (Newer Technology) from OWC. I plugged it in and everything seems to work great. However, when my iMac goes to sleep, it completely shuts off my iMac? I've verified that this is the issue and tested several times to confirm. I did a SMC reset and that did not work.
I was hoping if anyone who may have input in this matter or experience what I'm experiencing? I could return the usb hub and find a replacement but I was wondering if there is a solution for this. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you.

If you installed Mac OS X 10.6.6 using Software Update then I would try installing the 10.6.6 Combo manually. Occasionally the Combo can install any missing pieces in your OS.

  • Twin unpowered USB hub for connecting external HDD and iphone

I have a MBA and a powered Kensington 7 port USB hub which works great when I am either at home/in the office.
Is there an unpowered twin port USB hub that would allow me to connect both my WD myv passport 320gb external HDD and 3g iphone to my MBA when i am truly on the move?
    thanks in advance

Because those are both drawing power from the macbook air, it might be questionable, but any should do, but I haven't seen any 2 port hubs, only four port ones, and I tend to like Logiix, as their support is good and their products are good also, and they are fairly low profile.

  • USB Hub

I purchased a targus 7-port USB hub for my powerbook, but in about 30 minutes of it being plugged in, I get increasing background noise from the fan that then gradually becomes even more increasing to annoying limits and prevents any work from being done.
Can you suggest a powerbook friendly hub?
    Thanks

USB 2.0 hubs and devices increase the PB's fan activity. For connecting low speed devices, use a 1.1 hub. If you need an external hard disk, better choose a Firewire or a Combo drive.

  • Problem with USB hub on network

I recently added a USB hub to my mac mini server, which has the harddrives plugged in. Its a powered hub and within the confines of the mini is perfect.
However on the network I can see my mini, home folder and public folder, but cannot see the harddrives connected to the hub.
    Is this a 'feature?'

    HI,
I knew you were going to ask that...
The only Information on the Hub is Logitech Premium 4 Port USB Hub  (2.0)
And of course I no longer have the packaging...
Picked it up last year at a Local Electronics Store for about $30...

  • USB hub kills laptop

I have a Belkin 4-port USB hub that I plug my external harddrive, ipod, and printer into, which I then connect to my powerbook, all via USB. But, whenever I leave the hub plugged into my laptop and then shut my computer's monitor, putting it to sleep, later, when I open it, it won't wake up. The screen stays black and, though the computer IS on, the monitor won't light up and the only way I can fix this is by rebooting the computer.
I've ascertained that the USB hub has to be the issue because this problem never occurs when I eject all the devices and unplug the hub. Though I know the powerbook has problems with hubs that mix USB 2.0 and 1.1 - that's buried deep in the manual - I have made sure to have only 2.0 devices plugged into the hub, so I know that isn't the issue.
The hub was bought new, as was everything connected to it, so I really doubt that the issue is defective hardware on that end. I would assume that Apple makes their computers so they actually work when USB devices are plugged into them and left there - I use my laptop as my home computer, so it's often in this state - so what's the deal? Apple won't help because it's a third party device that is triggering the problem. The USB hub is the one that Apple sells on their website, so I know it's supported! Any ideas?

Ian, I am not sure if this will help explain about USB connections or not.
USB connections are temperamental and can sometimes cause several different disruptions.
I will give you a few of the anomalies that I am sure USB connections to peripherals can cause. This includes just about any including Camera's Scanners, Printers, and External Zip Drives.
More often than not You need to have the devices plugged in before you start your computer before it can be recognized. This is not always true but it happens, so this is a contradiction, It can work either way but this is the reason they recommend not to disconnect a USB devise while your devise is plugged in. There seems to be a disruption in the connection and if you do unplug it and then plug it back in it will not remount unless you, re- boot, or restart your computer before it will work again and recognize the devise.
It appears that USB devices are normally good in there operation when plugged in directly to your computer, rather then a HUB.
After reading the different posts in these forums on the inconsistency, and from personal experience in there use.
It is know wonder that there is such poor performance in the use of USB Modems, and everyone recommends Ethernet or Firewire connections over USB.
USB is and can be functional, if you remember the simple rules to follow on connection and disconnection of the devises, and special care is taken.
Yes I know we as users feel that we should be able to just plug and play but this is not always the case.

  • Please Recommend reliable USB Hub?

RE: Please recommend reliable USB Hub?
It seems not all "Hi-Speed-give-me-a-break-where-are-my-firewire-ports-Steve-dangit" USB devices ports are linking up so easily as advertised these days, at least not for me.
1.0_I Am Looking for a reliable USB hub to expand the port set on a Mac Book Aluminum 2.0 13" Recommendations?
Specifically a USB hub that can connect Little disk drives via the USB extractable cable.
Tried a BELKIN Hi-Speed USB 2.0 Mini Hub (Grey zippo sized case with flip-up section reveals extractable USB cable plus extension) no such luck.
    Thanks to all who reply

Indeed Apple recommends you rfirst option, which seems best. the 7 port model is just "wild"
The USB spec says that there can't be greater than 4 ports per USB hub, as well as a limit of five hub extension. There's a reason why it's typically 7 (and not 8) ports. It would be possible by making an 8-port USB hub, with one internal hub using two ports for two four port hubs for a total of 8 ports. A typical 7-port model would internally be considered two 4 port USB hubs, with the second hub connected to one port of the first hub. It could make a difference if more downstream hubs are connected (running into the limit of five consecutive), and there might be some differences in the host granting requests depending on which devices are connected to which ports.
As for recommendations - I can't fine it right now, but I remember using an unpowered hub sold by Targus. It was 4 port, but I liked that it had three side-by-side ports along with a single port at the end. The single one was ideal for non-standard sized USB devices like some really wide USB flash drives. I never really assume that the label corresponds to the manufacturer, since there are a host of lookalike hubs which are made by one company and relabelled by others.
One thing that irks me about all MacBook designs is because of the 13" screen they've placed the USB ports really close to each other. It makes it impossible to use a standard sized plug along with something like a USB flash drive. My older iBook had the USB ports spaced maybe 3 mm further apart, which was enough room to insert a SanDisk Cruzer micro.
