  • S12 Nvidia ION Denmark

So. Now available in at least UK and Germany. Any timer for Denmark yet? Dealers say mid december, which kinda sucks. Any feedback appreciated

Many reviewers over the last 6 months have mentioned this.
I'd hope Lenovo has been picking up on this feedback most of the year and tweaking the specifications for a snug fit.

  • New S12 NVIDIA Ion loose battery

I've had my Lenovo IdeaPad S12 (29595DU) for a couple of weeks now.  It works really well, but I notice the battery seems a little loose. Doesn't lose contact or come off, just wiggles.  Is this normal for an S12?
Will it get worse with age?  Other than that I'm pleased with it.
    Thanks

  • S12 with nVidia Ion

    Good day,
Having ordered one of the S12's with Ion I have a few questions while I wait for my unit to arrive. What are the upgrade limits for the ram (currently 2gb) will this model support a higher amount of ram? Please advise.
Additionally, where can one find an online manual for this model in particular, I pored over the S12 (plain Atom) user manual but would really be interested in the manual for the nVidia equipped model. Any help you could give with this would be splendid.
    Thanks

Alright I thought it might be helpful if I posted up a followup to my post in regards to my S12 with Ion. I received my netbook on Friday, first impressions are as follows:
It sure is shiny on the top (and yes a fingerprint magnet) so yes I would say keep something handy to clean it if you are somewhat of a neat freak.
The video display is very VERY crisp, a bit too bright (I toned down the brightness on it right away to be honest)
It comes loaded with bloat, be prepared to trim the hell out of it or just re-install Win7 (which I would recommend)
The C partition is roughly 180gb and the rest of the HD space I'm assuming is the recovery sectors.
After cleaning off the bloat ware and veriface (which I find rather annoying) it runs very smooth.
Performance wise I would recommend maxing out the ram which I intend to do here this week and re-install.
Heatwise it never get's above slightly warm after hours of use (and playing some WoW )
Battery life is just under 4hrs which honestly for the graphics capability is really not that bad.
Since the spec sheet really isn't all that useful, here's the port configuration:
    1x HDMI Port
    1x VGA Port
    3x USB
    1x Headphone/Microphone jacks
    1x LAN Port
And a MMC/MS/MSpro/SD Memory card reader (very handy to have.)
Initial thoughts, I am very impressed with the build quality, fit and finish of this product it's very well designed and thought out and it shows. My friend that ordered two of these picked up an external USB dvd drive (which I would recommend but haven't done myself yet) he installed Red Alert for his kids and reports that it runs very smooth and nice.
I have hooked up a ATI Tv Wonder 600 (USB) to this and for the part was very impressed with it's performance when used in conjuction with Media Center. The only downside I noticed was it get's a bit stuttery it's almost like the Atom just doesn't have enough oomph to keep it smooth (it could be that I was watching HD channels?) but other than that I have to say I'm quite happy with my purchase thus far and do not have any complaints. This replaced a 15" Acer Ferarri for me that was getting very long in the tooth (radeon 9600 mobility graphics, AMD 64 [non-x2] and some other goodies) and honestly is doing what I've asked of it.
So there's my take at a glance, hope this helps a bit for you.

  • S12 - Why no NVIDIA ION option?

If you search google for Ideapad s12, you will get nothing BUT reports about the S12 and how it is the first Lenovo netbook to offer the NVIDIA ION platform for graphics.
But when I go to purchase one, there is no option for ION.
Can anyone shed some light on this?

The  SU4100 I believe has no place in the S12.
I think that low Ghz processors, despite it being Core 2 Duo, will ultimately fall short.
I do Multitask a lot. I run AIM / mIRC / Several tabs in Chrome / Type in Word / Use Excel / Listen to Music / Stream or Download webcontent at the same time.
I'm running on a 2.5 Ghz Single P4 (which is a lot like the Atom platform) and 1Gb DDR Memory.
It runs GREAT, but give it a lower Core speed and I lose a lot of the benefits that the processor has to offer.
The Core 2 has NONE of the benefits that the Atom has, and can do at a higher clock.
So simple being Dual Core doesn't imply it will perform better.
Yes Intel / AMD are different, but the technology used in Netbooks was developed for a reason: Ultra low power computing with high output. This saves on battery, but enables mobility without significant sacrifice to performance for every day tasks. Pair it with the ION graphics platform and you have a sure thing.
    Windows XP
    512MB System RAM
2 Ghz Intel Pentium 4 or equivalent processor
    128MB Direct3D compatible video card and DirectX 9.0 compatible driver;
    8x DVD-ROM drive
4.6 GB free hard disk space
    DirectX 9.0c (included)
    DirectX 8.1 compatible sound card
    Keyboard, Mouse
    Oblivion specs ^
Windows 7 will cut down of performance hinderence.
2GB DDR2 RAM would enable smooth compatability between graphics and task holding
2.0Ghz ATOM fits the profile perfectly
The ION blows this requirement away in theory
The rest is negligible, BUT the processor you suggest would actually CRIPPLE the system.

  • Nvidia Ion Display Driver issues for S12

    I downloaded the Nvidia drivers
    195.62_notebook_winvista_win7_32bit_international_whql
    and
    195.81_notebook_winvista_win7_32bit_international_beta
I tried installing the 195.81 first, but it didnt work so i tried 195.62 but it also didnt work.
    The error message says this:
"The NVIDIA Setup program could not locate any drivers that are compatible with your current hardware.  Setup will now exit".
I have a Lenovo Ideapad S12 with Ion.  What is the problem?  I was able to install Nvidia's 191 version of the driver, but these updated ones don't work.
    Help me...
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

If you do a search, you'll find several threads on these forums regarding this issue.
For some reason, as you've found, the current nVidia reference GPU drivers don't work.
Now, thankyou for testing the 195.81 beta drivers - nVidia support actually suggested these as a fix to the issue!
They also suggested trying to install the drivers (either set) from within Safe Mode. You may wish to try that.
However, as has already been stated, the S12 works ok with the shipped drivers.
I recommend installing the nVidia reference chipset driver (I found a marked improvement in performance with them installed) - BUT, only install the SMU component - I found the Storage component causes issues (upto and including a Blue Screen when running a HDD benchmark).
Also, apparently, the desktop GPU drivers from nVidia will work fine.

  • Does the S12 netbook come with nvidia ion chip now?

Dose the current s12 come with nvidia ion chip? or late august? when will it be ready to order? anyone know? thanks!

I've loved my S10, but Lenovo's awaited Nvidia may have already missed this engineering cycle.
Don't want to spend many moments to explain....

  • Solaris 10 x86/x64 on NVidia ION

    Hello guys,
is it possible to install Solaris 10 x86/x64 on the NVidia ION-Platform? Are there any successful installations? For me it is important to know about the Point-of-view ION/330. This board I think is for a little home server a great performance/watt - system under 50W total power consumtion.
I hope anybody can help me.

    Hi,
I was successfully installed Solaris 10 on NVidia, and no troubles yet. But make sure to install latest version of Solaris i.e "Solaris 10 5/09", it'll install all drivers for Nvidia mother board by default. Otherwise you would have to face some problems to get the desktop.
    Thanks

  • Videos quality problem (N510 - nvidia ion)

    Hi,
I'm running arch on my samsung N510, with its nvidia ion (Geforce 9400M). I've some video quality problems. When images changes go quickly, stripes appear at the top. I made a capture (http://yfrog.com/7acapturewep) that shows the problem, it shows the stripes on the whole image It is not to be considered as my actual problem : during playback I see stripes only at the top of image.
I use the nvidia driver, tried with and without vdpau, and with different video players (mplayer, vlc...), with the same problem.
The videos are xvid, or h.264, HD or not.
    Any idea ?

your problem is called tearing and it's a well known issue:
    http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tearing
the nvidia drivers provide a seperate video output for media players that should prevent this, try:
    xvinfo | grep Blitter
i have no tearing with composite enabled on my 6600GT
note that you do have to use the proper vide driver in mplayer. If you use smplayer, it's under options -> video. The nvidia anti-blitter output driver should be listed.

  • NVidia ION Driver

    Hi All,
I am new to Arch but I have installed it a couple of times on other machines fine. I'm now trying to install it on a new build I'm doing that uses nVidia ION for video. The only thing is, I'm not sure what driver I should be using? I did try searching but came up with nothing Could anyone tell me please?
    Thanks,
    Luke

What make/model board?  I have a Zotac IONITX A-U that works using the nvidia driver pacakge.  I suspect this will work for you too.

  • Q150 - New Nvidia ION graphic driver

Did anybody give a try to the newest 266.58 WHQL nvidia ION driver?
Is it solving the now infamous 1080p HD stuttering?
It claims that "Supports GPU-acceleration for smoother online HD videos with Adobe Flash 10.1"!

A couple of people who posted feedback on NewEgg mentioned updating the ION drivers with good results. Click on the feedback tab from the link below, and look for comments from Pluto on 1/18 and SHiZNiLTi on 1/4.

  • [Review] Intel Atom 330 / Nvidia Ion based Media Center

I thought some of you may be interested. I've just bought a Point of View Mobii ION Mini PC to build a media center.
There are other Nvidia ION based Mini PCs available, but there are few points that made my choice for the Point of View one:
    - Intel Atom 330 (Dual Core)
    - Mini ITX
    - 2 GB RAM
    - 320 GB HDD
    - 1 Available PCI-Express Slot (hopefully a good DVB-S(2) TV Card with CI will be available soon)
    - SPDIF / Toslink Digital Audio Out
    - 8 USB Ports (6 Back, 2 Front)
    - HDMI Out (Thought that this would be important, but more on this later), DVI, VGA
    - No CPU or Motherboard Fan
Additionally I bought a Keysonic ACK-540BT Bluetooth Keyboard with an integrated touchpad. I added 1 GB DDR2 RAM to the PC for a total of 3 GB.
Arch Linux worked straight out of the box, but there are a few things to note:
    - The Intel Atom 330 does NOT support Intel Speedstep, therefore no frequency scaling is possible
    - I don't want a login manager, just a straight lxde Desktop with an autostarting XBMC, but Blueman (needed for autopairing with the bluetooth keyboard) needed a ck-launch-session to get access to the bluetooth dongle (took me a while to find this out)
    - XBMC supports VDPAU out of the box if you configure it, CPU usage when playing a movie is below 20%
    - I disconnected the hdd and power LED because they are quite bright (the cabinet I use for my equipment has a glass door)
    - The Mini PC is not hearable from 0.5 meters even when hdd is working
    - HDMI Output works flawless but my SONY LCD TV is not a Full HD one but has a native resolution of 1360x768. With HDMI I could only choose between 720p (1280x720) which is too small or 1080i (1920x1080) which would be too large. I now use a standard VGA DSUB cable and get a perfectly sharp 1360x768 resolution. No need for HDMI
    Just if anyone is interested:
    - glxgears: ~2400 fps
    hdparm -Tt /dev/sda
    /dev/sda:
    Timing cached reads: 1304 MB in 2.00 seconds = 651.94 MB/sec
    Timing buffered disk reads: 358 MB in 3.00 seconds = 119.22 MB/sec
This is the perfect media center solution for me, capable of managing more than 15.000 mp3 and m4a, a bunch of divx videos and dvd isos, 10.000 photos and hundreds of shoutcast internet radio stations. All managable with a wireless keyboard and touchpad on my Sony LCD TV. Just the tv card is missing...

i am also working on my zotac-9300 itx. i also have the problem of get the right resolution. my tv was bought three years ago and i attached a hdmi cable to it in case some day (such as today) i will use it. however, the zotac hdmi does not work with the tv. either the tv does not detect the signal or the motherboard does not send the signal out. anyway, i use a dvi->hdmi adapter now. but the resolution is still not right. (will fix it later). the 9300 works great on h264, but somehow has trouble with the HD tv signal. although the cpu usage is low when playing those HD channels, but the frames are not smooth. i am using kaffeine to work tv. i am trying to get the vlc to work with vdpau (or vaapi) but has no luck. anyway, good to share our experience on htpc.
ps. my board is using a internal power supply which give me some noise when the room is quiet, but it is ok when watching moives.

  • Nvidia ION Netbook with Broadcom Crystal HD Accelerator card?

    Hi!
With the new updates on Adobe flash Beta the Nvidia ION laptops/netbooks have gone a step closer running full HD material. There are also Mini PCI-E cards that like Broadcom´s Chrystal HD Accelerator that can do some of the decoding instead of the CPU.
I would like to know what would happen if i put one of these decoder cards into a Nvidia ION based netbooks. Will it be pointless or can the two chips co-operate somehow? Maybe end up chrashing the OS?
    Salv

Question regarding Flash Player beta are best asked in the beta forum.

  • HOW TO: HDMI Audio Output for Zotac Media Box with nVidia ION :)

I've been fighting with my recently purchased Zotac mini-PC for about 2 months now trying to get the HDMI audio output to work. I tried extensive modifications of /etc/asound.conf, different versions of ALSA, and even OSS without success. I've finally succeeded using ALSA and GNOME.
First I installed ALSA according to the Arch wiki.
Next I verified that ALSA detected my sound card(s):
    cat /proc/asound/cards
    0 [Intel ]: HDA-Intel - HDA Intel
HDA Intel at 0xfe9fc000 irq 28
    1 [NVidia ]: HDA-Intel - HDA NVidia
HDA NVidia at 0xfcf7c000 irq 18
Next I checked which sound card had the HDMI jack:
    aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: ALC888 Analog [ALC888 Analog]
    Subdevices: 1/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 1: ALC888 Digital [ALC888 Digital]
    Subdevices: 1/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 3: NVIDIA HDMI [NVIDIA HDMI]
    Subdevices: 1/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 7: NVIDIA HDMI [NVIDIA HDMI]
    Subdevices: 1/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 8: NVIDIA HDMI [NVIDIA HDMI]
    Subdevices: 1/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 9: NVIDIA HDMI [NVIDIA HDMI]
    Subdevices: 1/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
From these two commands, I concluded that I have 2 sound cards (important later on) and that my HDMI sound card was card 1 (NVidia) and that it had 4 possible devices (3,7,8, and 9). To determine which device must be used, I ran the following command for each device (for example, to test card X and device Y, use' plughw:X,Y'):
    aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav -D plughw:1,7
Playing WAVE '/usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav' : Signed 16 bit Little Endian, Rate 48000 Hz, Mono
I tried each device and got the best sound from device 7 (8 and 9 also worked, device 3 gave static...).
Now, since I had 2 sound cards, I needed to change the default ALSA device. My default ALSA device was card 0 (the Intel card), which wasn't plugged in, so I needed to change the default card to be card 1 (the HDMI card). After reading the ALSA FAQ, I found that modifying /usr/share/alsa.conf should work, though modifying /etc/asound.conf should have also worked. For whatever reason, I couldn't get my modifications to /etc/asound.conf to work, so I edited /usr/share/alsa/alsa.conf. In the  "# defaults" section I replaced the following:
    defaults.ctl.card NVidia
    defaults.pcm.card NVidia
    defaults.pcm.device 7
I opted to use the key NVidia rather than the card number (1) since I've read in numerous places that the card index can change unexpectedly after a reboot/update. The key can be checked with cat /proc/asound/cards as shown above.
After this, I reloaded ALSA (/etc/rc.d/alsa restart) and verified that the sound worked through the default channel:
    aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav -D default
Playing WAVE '/usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav' : Signed 16 bit Little Endian, Rate 48000 Hz, Mono
Finally, I rebooted, chose the HDA NVidia (ALSA Mixer) option from gnome-volume-control, and loaded a movie in gnome-mplayer. I was pleased to hear crystal clear sound with functioning volume control
I Hope this helps someone else, I found it very hard to piece together how to diagnose and resolve this problem. Here are some of the resources I found useful:
    Arch Wiki ALSA Page
ALSA FAQ for how to change default sound card
    ALSA FAQ
    XBMC Troubleshooting for ION HDMI

@sprince09 Can you hear sound through HDMI when you run aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav -D plughw:1,7 ?
(8 and 9 also worked, device 3 gave static...)
    - what does it mean? How do you know that they are working?
What options do you have for snd_hda_intel in /etc/modprobe.d/ ?  Can you play the following:
    mplayer -ao alsa:device=hw=1,7 file.wav
BTW, can you hear sound form video files in xine? If yes, can you post your ~/.xine/config ?

    Hi !
Please don't use xorg.conf, edit the files inside /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ instead.
I also have an ION board and have working HDMI connection with audio at 1920x1080 using the below configuration. Remove your xorg.conf and then edit these files:
    /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-monitor.conf
    Section "Monitor"
    Identifier "Monitor0"
    Option "ExactModeTimingsDVI" "True"

    Monitor "Monitor0"
    Device "Default nvidia Device"
    SubSection "Display"
    Depth 24
    Modes "1920x1080-TV"
    EndSubSection
    EndSection
    /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-nvidia.conf
    Section "Device"
    Identifier "Default nvidia Device"
    Driver "nvidia"
    Option "NoLogo" "True"
    Option "ModeValidation" "NoEdidModes"
    Option "UseEdidDpi" "False"
    Option "DPI" "100 x 100"
    EndSection
Please note that the above Modeline works on my TV (a 22'' low cost brand one) but I cannot guarantee it will work on yours.
Try that first, then if it doesn't work, try to generate one using the cvt command, and replace the Modeline:
    cvt 1920 1080
it should output something like this:
    # 1920x1080 59.96 Hz (CVT 2.07M9) hsync: 67.16 kHz; pclk: 173.00 MHz
    Modeline "1920x1080_60.00" 173.00 1920 2048 2248 2576 1080 1083 1088 1120 -hsync +vsync
If this method doesn't work either, try the method explained here (which is the one I've first used to find the right Modeline). Its tricky method, and requires a bit of work and lot of patience ... just don't give up
Finally, a little bonus . To have working HDMI sound, I have to put these lines in /etc/asound.conf:
    /etc/asound.conf
    pcm.!default {
    type hw
    card 0
    device 3
Again, you may need to change the device index in your case. You can list alsa devices using aplay -l command:
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 0: VT1708S Analog [VT1708S Analog]
    Subdevices: 2/2
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
    Subdevice #1: subdevice #1
card 0: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 1: VT1708S Digital [VT1708S Digital]
    Subdevices: 1/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 3: HDMI 0 [HDMI 0]
    Subdevices: 0/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
